  • Ever wonder what it's like to keep Thai micro crabs? This video will show you, step-by-step, how to build an aquascape for Thai micro crabs. Be sure to stick around to the end to see how these crabs interact with each other (it's not always friendly!).
    Also, I'd love to know if you've ever kept Thai micro crabs, let me know in the comments.

    Their movements are similar to jumping spiders and they even kinda resemble them.

      I agree! They are very spider-like in their movements.

    do they get along with tankmates like shrimp or certain fishes?

    May I ask, will Thai micro crab damage the substrate structure? because previously I had a pompom crab, and he damaged the aquascape substrate so I had to rearrange it. therefore I separated it into another tank,

    • @stayzenaquaria

      Great question! In my experience, they like to climb on the hardscape and plants, but do not damage substrate or anything else. They do hide a lot though.

    I have a few Mexican dwarf crayfish in my tank. I also have gold dust shrimp and the crayfish don’t bother them. Will the crayfish bother the crabs ?

      well the crayfish r probably to big for the crabs, it seems the adult would be much larger than crabs and have much better chances at moving away

      Glad you liked the video! My article on this setup has the links to the equipment and materials I used (see below), but let me know if you have any other questions about setting up a tank like this: zenaquaria.com/thai-micro-crab-aquascape/

      @@stayzenaquaria Thank you, this is great! I have a 2 gallon already, but it's not vertical. I think I can still convert it as it's already planted :)

    can you keep the crabs with shrimps? I want to add more to my shrimp tank and these crabs are adorable and seem a good fit

      Great question, it is possible to keep freshwater shrimp, like cherry or amano , with these crabs, but, from what's I've read, the shrimp may outcompete the crabs for food. So, I would keep a very small number of shrimp with a group of crabs to prevent food issues. I've been thinking about adding a few shrimp to this tank so I might have a more nuanced answer for you soon.

      I added 11 crabs to my 5.5 gal neo tank back in November 2022. The scuds may have eaten freshly molted crabs and shrimp, and over the past 4 months I've been sucking out the scuds and rarely see one anymore although I'm sure they are still in the aquarium. I have only seen 1 thai micro crab lately and it lives mostly in a pile of small driftwood chunks. I've never seen it bother shrimp, in fact, I rarely see it at all. I never do anything special to feed it and I add small amount of shrimp food twice a week into the aquarium. The driftwood pile is on the aquarium substrate out in front of where the filter flow falls. I think the crabs like that spot for the water flow as they are filter feeders. They will also eat dead shrimp in the aquarium as I've seen from another thai micro crab keeper, but I"ve never seen one eating a dead shrimp in my aquarium. In fact, I've never seen a dead shrimp in my aquarium. Now that I"m down to just one, I am thinking of getting another 5 to keep that one company.

    why do you use a mesh bag of gravel?

    • @user-nd2mq3pe7e

      He used it to create an elevated substrate in the background of the tank the bag prevents the aquasoil from ending up under the gravel. Otherwise the smaller substrate will inevitably fall to the bottom over time through granular convection

    • @stayzenaquaria

      That's exactly right, the mesh bags of gravel or substrate are ideal for creating hills and they help with preventing substrate from sinking back to the bottom.

    Is it save to put them in a tank with vampire crab?

    • @Charlie-ly9kp

      I doubt it

    • @stayzenaquaria

      Hi teechall, Charlie is correct, it's not a good idea. Vampire crabs would likely make a snack out of the Thai micro crabs. Also, vampire crabs need a land area and Thai micro crabs are fully aquatic, so they really shouldn't be kept together.

    Would it be safe to keep these guys with panda cories? I have a 80 gal tank with 10 panda cories and around 20 red chest endlers, they're heavily planted and i'm looking for something new that's not snails or shrimps

    • @AwesomesMan

      From what I’ve read it’d be safe but you’ll likely never see them in such a big tank

    • @RedCyanPhotos

      To follow up on awesomeman’s answer the way you may have a chance of seeing them, is if you sit and observe your tank quietly under a blue light. It is dark enough for them to think it’s night time and they are likely to then come out.

    • @stayzenaquaria

      That's right, they would likely be fine in an 80 gallon with panda corys and endlers but odds are you will not see them because the surface area of an 80 gallon gives these crabs too many places to hide, and they are insanely good at hiding!
