What did you do with the slime mold?
no need to cover the bowl? won't he jump out?
Where did you get the light or what is the name of it?
do they get along with tankmates like shrimp or certain fishes?
Plant name 1 Java fern - Leptochilus pteropus 2 Whorled pennywort - Hydrocotyle verticillata 3 Anubias coffeefolia
Temtped to get a Nice Sized Group for my 125 Gallon. But I have 4 Bichirs. 😂
Decors too big. Less water space. 😑😒
I have a few Mexican dwarf crayfish in my tank. I also have gold dust shrimp and the crayfish don’t bother them. Will the crayfish bother the crabs ?
well the crayfish r probably to big for the crabs, it seems the adult would be much larger than crabs and have much better chances at moving away
Finally a bowl that's fish friendly 😊
Love the tank....new sub
I enjoy watching your set ups, I have a 6.5 rimless tank, but I have a hard time keeping the cherry shrimp alive, I'm at the point where I don't want to get anymore, I lost 5 of them only have 1 left, it's a nice natural planted tank, heater, sponge filter, spider wood which I hate because after 4 months it still makes a slight brown color, I test the water everything is good don't know why I am loosing them, I have 2 Mystery snails and 4 Ember Tetra in the tank all doing well, except the Cherry Shrimp.
Very nice, before I started my own I didn't know that Spider wood floats and also leaches out Tannis brown water didn't know I should boil it and it does float so I placed rocks on the edges of the spider wood, it's 4 months although the water is less brown it still has a tea color which I'm not happy about and the spider wood are so nice but they turn black, never again will I use any kind of wood in the tank, the smaller tanks are more work then my larger tank.
For anyone who likes really big bowls but doesnt know where to find them, wholesale glass vases sells them online. Their biggest is 14 gallons
Hey there! Can you please add links to all of your materials? Awesome video.
Glad you liked the video! My article on this setup has the links to the equipment and materials I used (see below), but let me know if you have any other questions about setting up a tank like this: zenaquaria.com/thai-micro-crab-aquascape/
@@stayzenaquaria Thank you, this is great! I have a 2 gallon already, but it's not vertical. I think I can still convert it as it's already planted :)
Ive been wanting to do a 5 gallon tank in my bedroom and ive been leaning toweards a shrimp tank. I have everything but the tank, and theyre 12 bucks at Petco. This just inspired me 🦐
Hi Jesse, glad to hear that. Shrimp tanks are so fun, just make sure you fully cycle the tank (typically around 2 weeks) before adding the shrimp. Enjoy!
@@stayzenaquaria thanks! This is my 5th tank overall, currently cycling right now 🤙
Their movements are similar to jumping spiders and they even kinda resemble them.
I agree! They are very spider-like in their movements.
I thought Java Fern was supposed to be planted on rock or wood since it is a rhizome.
You can place Java Fern almost anywhere (or glue it to wood or rock), just don't bury the rhizome.
Yall, he doesn’t have 4 males and you also shouldn’t keep 4 males together as they can become territorial if they don’t have enough females
Male guppies do well in small groups, if I add females the whole tank will be overrun with baby guppies.
I cannot wait to set up my 5 gallon with shrimp!!! Do I have to add fish? I have several larger tanks with fish; was wanting one with just shrimp 🦐.
This tank would be great for just shrimp, no fish necessary! Another idea is to get some Horned Nerite Snails to keep with the shrimp, they look incredible.
What light is that?
I have an article that lists all the equipment I used, including the light: zenaquaria.com/thai-micro-crab-aquascape/
What is a good temp for these guys.
I keep this tank between 76-78 Fahrenheit (24.4-25.6 Celsius).
thanks bro....... this video was so useful for me.
I'm glad it was useful!
Just adopted a blind betta that can’t keep up in my other tanks so thanks for this!
Glad to hear that! Your betta is lucky to have you.
May I ask, will Thai micro crab damage the substrate structure? because previously I had a pompom crab, and he damaged the aquascape substrate so I had to rearrange it. therefore I separated it into another tank,
Great question! In my experience, they like to climb on the hardscape and plants, but do not damage substrate or anything else. They do hide a lot though.
Which substrate did you use?
I have an article that talks about the equipment and materials used for this bowl aquascape, including substrate: zenaquaria.com/planted-betta-bowl/
Nah 5 guppies in a 5 gallon is abuse
Nah bro I have 12 guppies in a 5 gallon and they been alive since I got them
doesnt mean its not abuse. get a fucking clue @@joseph_k_8565
@@joseph_k_8565its still abuse
Depends on your definition of abuse, these guppies get frequent water changes and have plenty of space to swim.
@@stayzenaquaria thats a classic abuse reply
These fish like big schools and need a 20 gallon tank they will grow big!
I upgraded them a while back; they do enjoy bigger schools so a 20 gallon is more ideal for them, but they stay relatively small.
Guppies look so beautiful!
Thank you! They are so much fun to watch.
Nice but all thst substrate and decos it seems like 1 gallon now 😂😂😂😂🙄
That's a fair point haha, if I were to redo it I would probably add less substrate and rocks,!
this is great i pretty much created the same setup in a 9 gal bowl and I love it
Nice!! A 9 gallon bowl sounds great, happy scaping!
Thanks for the video. I have a 23G tank setup initially for a guppy tank then some months later added about a dozen cherry shrimp. They have bred now which is great. The only thing you may have mentioned is that guppies will eat some of the shrimp fry so if you wanted lots of shrimp, it would need to be a shrimp only tank. Otherwise if you are happy with just some surviving it doesn't matter. Also, letting a tank cycle properly on its own would take a LONG time. Unless you are feeding it with ammonia or something causing ammonia. A seasoned sponge filter is the best bet from another tank. Instant cycle! Done it over and over again and works perfect. Also to mention adding prime or a similar agent that removes the chlorine and chloramine etc.
Nice! Yes, guppies will eat small shrimp fry if they can find them, having lots of plant cover and moss helps. In my experience, small tanks, like a 5 or 10 gallon cycle within a few weeks, but yes a seasoned sponge filter is great to add to a new tank if you have it. Good point on adding prime, especially if the tank is newer.
Beautiful tank!! Just starting Vivarium's & Palladium hobby and this was the PERFECT video to motive me to go with Cherry Shrimp & guppies in my 1st tank. A 10 gl to get me started off. I have two other aquarium tanks but need to grow some plants, grass and moss and will use those for quarantine &?? for now. Thanks for the great video!!!
Glad to hear that! It's a wonderful hobby. Yes, if you have an extra tank or two for quarantining fish that is ideal, just make sure to cycle it properly before adding anything to the tanks. Good luck and happy scaping!
Well if done fight bowls are perfect for a betta. You just gotta do your research about how make the bowl self sufficient. Live plants, bacteria growth, using sand inside of peabbles or rock for the substrate, etc. Bettas in my research dont do so hot in larger tanks to much swim space for their tiny fins to handle. Ive seen a betta that was 10 years old in a 3 gallon fish bowl.
Nice to hear about the 10 year old betta in a 3 gallon bowl! Completely agree about doing the research and having live plants. Lately I've been recommending 5 gallon setups for bettas because beginners often make mistakes with water quality and overfeeding, but, if done right, a 3+ gallon bowl is a great setup.
Would it be safe to keep these guys with panda cories? I have a 80 gal tank with 10 panda cories and around 20 red chest endlers, they're heavily planted and i'm looking for something new that's not snails or shrimps
From what I’ve read it’d be safe but you’ll likely never see them in such a big tank
To follow up on awesomeman’s answer the way you may have a chance of seeing them, is if you sit and observe your tank quietly under a blue light. It is dark enough for them to think it’s night time and they are likely to then come out.
That's right, they would likely be fine in an 80 gallon with panda corys and endlers but odds are you will not see them because the surface area of an 80 gallon gives these crabs too many places to hide, and they are insanely good at hiding!
@@stayzenaquaria you know, after keeping 20 of em there for 3 weeks they seem to start showing up quite often, i dont know if that's normal or not
I’d try to get the least amount of sticks and plant matter as possible. They can decompose and kill the whole evosphere
That's a good tip, I've had to remove some leaves to prevent rapid decomposition.
why do you use a mesh bag of gravel?
He used it to create an elevated substrate in the background of the tank the bag prevents the aquasoil from ending up under the gravel. Otherwise the smaller substrate will inevitably fall to the bottom over time through granular convection
That's exactly right, the mesh bags of gravel or substrate are ideal for creating hills and they help with preventing substrate from sinking back to the bottom.
Fantastic!
Thank you, David! I enjoyed making that cave aquascape.
Glad I came across your videos. I'm thinking of having shrimps in the classroom. The kids would love watching them move and eat. Good news a filter isn't required. I am wondering if we didn't have a heater, would the shrimp be more likely to die? Thanks!
Hi Karen, great question, I love the idea of having a shrimp tank in your classroom! You don't need a filter but remember to perform consistent water changes, especially if the shrimp are being fed commercial foods. Whether you need a heater depends on the temperatures in your area. If temperature swings are severe in your area (above 85 Fahrenheit or below 55 Fahrenheit) you might have some issues with shrimp longevity. If an in-tank heater is not possible, I would consider getting a heat mat (the ones used for reptiles) for under the tank/jar and putting that on a thermostat.
Great footage of the crabs! Keep up with the amazing content! 👍
Thanks!! I appreciate the encouragement!
Is it ok if i use a heating pad instead of that regular heater?
Great question, Irene. Yes! A heating pad is a great alternative to a heater for a bowl aquarium like this one. I recommend putting the heating pad on a thermostat though, so you can regulate the temperature more precisely.
Is it save to put them in a tank with vampire crab?
I doubt it
Hi teechall, Charlie is correct, it's not a good idea. Vampire crabs would likely make a snack out of the Thai micro crabs. Also, vampire crabs need a land area and Thai micro crabs are fully aquatic, so they really shouldn't be kept together.
Hi! Congrats, im having a similar, just .. how many Shrimps you ve got in it??? And is it same the red Cherry as to the Amano? I mean im terms of the quantity i could place in it
Hi Mauricio, great question, I think there are 20+ cherry shrimp in the tank right now but I've lost count because they keep breeding. For Amano shrimp, you could probably keep around that many but it would look kinda crowded, I suggest sticking to 5-10 Amanos for a setup like this, they are typically larger than cherry shrimp. Hope that helps.
Beautiful 😍 question how often do you do a water change as you don't have filters
Hi Jennifer, great question. I generally do 2 water changes a week of about 30-50%. And when I have an algae outbreak, I may perform more than that. It sounds like a lot of work, but removing and refilling 1-3 gallons during each water change is pretty quick.
Do you end up selling these tanks? how much would you sell them for?
Hi FLPnotc, I have not sold a tank like this before, but I do wish they were more widely available. Glass tanks are heavy and tough to ship so the price would likely be kinda high. If you want to see where I got this one check out my article on this betta bowl: zenaquaria.com/planted-betta-bowl/
My little deformed angel fish. It swims sideways and is so sweet and cute! I’m getting ready to create a tank for him/her, to separate him/her from the other baby angels we have (as she’s part of a batch of eggs our adults laid) and I think I’m going to do something very similar to this. 😊 She needs her own little home where she can be happy and free with some calm other fishies so he/she can live a good little life.
Hi Ashley, this would be a great tank for your little angel fish! Very kind of you to be giving him/her a peaceful setup away from the others. I suggest getting a medium/large sponge filter for your setup instead of the hang on back one that I have on this tank. The sponge filter will provide decent filtration without sucking anyone's fins up. Glad this video gave you some ideas!
can you keep the crabs with shrimps? I want to add more to my shrimp tank and these crabs are adorable and seem a good fit
Great question, it is possible to keep freshwater shrimp, like cherry or amano , with these crabs, but, from what's I've read, the shrimp may outcompete the crabs for food. So, I would keep a very small number of shrimp with a group of crabs to prevent food issues. I've been thinking about adding a few shrimp to this tank so I might have a more nuanced answer for you soon.
I added 11 crabs to my 5.5 gal neo tank back in November 2022. The scuds may have eaten freshly molted crabs and shrimp, and over the past 4 months I've been sucking out the scuds and rarely see one anymore although I'm sure they are still in the aquarium. I have only seen 1 thai micro crab lately and it lives mostly in a pile of small driftwood chunks. I've never seen it bother shrimp, in fact, I rarely see it at all. I never do anything special to feed it and I add small amount of shrimp food twice a week into the aquarium. The driftwood pile is on the aquarium substrate out in front of where the filter flow falls. I think the crabs like that spot for the water flow as they are filter feeders. They will also eat dead shrimp in the aquarium as I've seen from another thai micro crab keeper, but I"ve never seen one eating a dead shrimp in my aquarium. In fact, I've never seen a dead shrimp in my aquarium. Now that I"m down to just one, I am thinking of getting another 5 to keep that one company.
Love your content! Your videos are very helpful and entertaining.
Glad to hear that @calw.8527! Thanks for watching 🦀
Zen this scape was very informative, I have a 6 aqueon cube that I also will add endlers or amber tetras. Thanks for sharing.
Hi again Mary, Endler's livebearers or Ember tetras are a great idea for a 6 gallon cube! Glad you enjoyed the video.
hi, if i follow you tutorial, will it be good in my aquarium ? (its an aquatlantis 40x30x24,5) nad you video and tutorials is really helpful ! but i don't wanna havve something bad :c
Hi Calingo, yes this tutorial will help you set up a planted aquarium for guppies and freshwater shrimp! To avoid unpleasant/bad results, make sure your tank is fully cycled before adding any fish or invertebrates, and perform consistent water changes to maintain optimal water parameters. Hope that helps!
Really enjoy the videos! Two questions: one where did you get your red cherry shrimp with the white racing stripe?? So awesome! And two, what did you do about the slime mold? I know I said two lol but is it dangerous?? Never heard nor saw it before! Highly interesting💯
Hi Logan, great questions! I believe the racing stripe shrimp was part of a group that I got from another aquarists in my area, I like the way that shrimp looks too haha. As for the slime mold, it hasn't reappeared and as far as I know they are not dangerous, but they sure are strange. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@stayzenaquaria absolutely, thanks a lot!
