  • Wind, Heavy Rain and Clagged In ! FIRST ever UK MOUNTAIN Wild Camp in the NEW Scarp 1 ULTRA
    In this video, I camp for the very first time here in the UK in the new Scarp 1 'Ultra' which is made out of a special fabric called UltraTNT which is made by Challenge Sailcloth. This fabric is more dimensionally stable than DCF or traditional woven fabrics such as nylon.
    I hike up into the mountains of the Lake District National Park in some testing weather, with gusting winds and driving rain throughout the night. Low level clouds scudded across the distant peaks which made for a dramatic and ever changing landscape.
    The tent performed very well, using no additional guylines and only the six pegs which come with the tent. I enjoyed a nice evening meal and some craft beer whilst watching the dramatic skies change.
    The next morning, I awoke to yet more cloud - so had a quick coffee before packing away and heading off the fells.The tent is on loan to me and will be moving across to my friend soon for him to test out.
    Thank you for watching and remember to always leave no trace

      Hi Chris. Great video of the new Scarp. Always been a fan of your videos - you were one of the first people I started following on YT. Question for you about the new scarp…how low to the ground does the fly come? I have a silnylon scarp 1 which I love but just wish the fly didn’t leave such a gap to the ground. Do you know how ultra compares to the silnylon scarp 1 in that respect? Thanks!

    As a Scarp user of several years now, I have to say that adding side guys is essential, as is lengthening the provided guys at the ends. I'll stick with the tried and tested silnylon for now, let's see how this latest Ultra fabric holds up over time.
    "Vortices" (16:04) - new word of the day - impressed with your grammar sir!
    Couldn't agree more about the special feel of cloudier conditions in the hills (dare I say even more special without a radio...)

    Brilliant mate. I must say that your videos help me a lot. I do struggle with my overthinking and anxiety but your videos instantly make me forget about things and I love watching them. They seriously form a big part of my relaxation in the house. I love just to watch them as they're released in the evenings and I've found myself going for more hikes because of it.

      Just a quick question about the tent if I may….
      is the fabric on the pole sleeve made of sturdier stuff?
      I only ask because I’ve seen people mentioning that the pole sleeve fabric on the original scarp 1 was quite delicate and prone to piercing & could of been made more robust.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The arch sleeve is a material called Ultra 100 which is a 100d uhwmpe woven face laminated to a mylar film. Ultra 100 is typically a backpack material and again is far and away stronger than the 70d sil-nylon arch sleeve of a normal Scarp.
      You'd have to ram the pole in pretty hard to pierce 70d nylon on the standard scarp. I've never pierced mine and I've had it in all sorts of conditions.

    Great video mate. Not sure if it’s worth upgrading my 5 year old scarp 1, the weight difference isn’t massive, although being a light sleeper if it’s a quieter tent I might be tempted, although might be louder than silnylon when rain is hitting it.

    Interesting video.Thanks! I have the SCARP 2 in silnylon and like it for two. i shortened my X-ing Poles and ran them UNDER the fly, securing the ends in the original grommets that I sewed inside the fly, just above the Pitch Lok struts for a VERY strong attachment point. This method gives a better support to the fly but requires sewing double sided Velcro straps (shortened electronics cable wraps) sewn and seam sealed under the two lower reinforcement points for the external Xing Pole strap anchors. Two of these for each pole is sufficient to keep them in place in high winds and/or snow load. After doing this I removed the eternal X-ing Pole straps to prevent flapping in the wind and use some for stake loops on my TT NOTCHLi 3 season tent fly.

I’ve previously camped there or should I say nearly camped there, but had to bail because of a drastic change in the weather. This looks like a great tent Chris, how would you rate it space wise versus the Hilleberg Soulo mate? Which would you see yourself being more comfortable in if tent bound on a hill in bad weather fora long stretch of time, if you had to cook etc.? It looks very solid and I'm potentially interested in one but don't fancy splashing out on another "Bentley Tent". Great video, thanks for the upload and sharing the experience.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Space wise, exactly the same as the standard Scarp 1. It's the fabric and some other changes to the design which make this strong than that version. There is MUCH more room in this than Soulo. Bear in mind this is 1.2KG with the carbon pole and is a single hoop tunnel tent. The Soulo is much heavier, is semi geodesic but a true 4 season tent. I would say this is a 3 season tent, maybe just into the 4th. I'm sure further testing will show what it can handle wind wise. Have a look at the standard Scarp 1 too.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cosy aside, I'd stick with my standard Scarp 1 as its more than enough for the camps I do. If I were a serious 'thru hiker' or wanted something even more strong and stable than the standard, I'd invest in the Ultra. This is a lot of tent for the weight (1.2KG using the carbon pole) and offers a huge amount of performance for the weight.

    Love this video! That’s what it’s all about! Great outdoors and a nice camp with some fantastic craft beers! Looks like a great tent. Really cool material! But 13£ for Real Turmat? Are you kidding me?! It’s less than half of that in Sweden! So maybe you can finance a trip to Sweden by just bringing home heaps of Turmat 😂

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, yes - in the UK, Turmat is very expensive. I class it as a bit of a treat! It must be the cost of importing them! But I think they're definitely the nicest meals! You could start an importing business 😂 thanks for watching mate and of course, your great support.

  • @benny_mc
    @benny_mc ปีที่แล้ว

    The weather's been Thomas the Tank hasn't it mate!? Good to get out though and the tent looks strong. Where is it pitching (pun intended) competition and price-wise?👍

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Competition, I'd say it probably stands alone really - the standard Scarp is a reasonably strong tent, it's the carbon uprights in the corners I'd say, they give it more structure. It's not cheap - I couldn't afford one 😂 if you're in the market for a specialist tent with very light materials, that could shrug off the majority of UK weather, then it's a worthy contender.

    What’s your first thoughts ?
    Cheers Graham

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching Graham. I guess the initial standout is the stability and strength of the fabric vs the low weight of 1.2KG. Granted the winds around 20mph didn't ask too much, but the fabric was hardly moving. It's very strange to observe but it has very high dimensional stability - so when pitched tightly, it's very stable. The HH rating is off the chart - it essentially won't let water in and the tear strength of the fabric is such that (when compared to nylon / silnylon counterparts), it gets a rating of 'does not tear'
