  • In 2021 a woman was found, terribly injured, at the foot of Arthur's seat in Edinburgh, Scotland. She later died, and a police investigation led to a trial. She was pushed by her husband.
Kashif Anwar, Fawziyah’s husband was convicted and received a minimum sentence of 20 years, although he intends to appeal the ruling.
In an exclusive interview with BBC Newsnight, Yasmin Javed, mother of Fawziyah Javed, reveals details of her daughter's tragic murder.
Yasmin Javed believes one of the motives for her daughter's death was so-called "honour" based - alongside, coercive control, and jealousy.
    Newsnight’s Yasminara Khan reports.

There are sharia courts secretly operating around the country (this has been documented with evidence) and many archaic preaching's that don't always modernise values. So I doubt it is just the family. I imagine there is an echo chamber around his friends that he has grown up with, I know because I hear it around groups where I live. This is a very extreme case, but the country will develop a bit more towards trends of coercion and archaic religious thought, because the natives are just not having enough babies. His family sound horrible as well, but then if you are raised to mistrust women and dress them head to toe because they can't be trusted I imagine you will have a complex about the women involved with your son.

Please explain... Last I checked it was only the Jews who had their own police, ambulance service etc somewhere in Staffordshire.
The Muslims don't have the money power or influence to do that.
But let's for a second day they did.... And they had their own Sharia courts etc.... Why aren singling the Muslims out when other communities have been doing the exact thing and more for decades.

@@Musician7831to be honest I always thought they completely covered their women in black sacks head to toe so the men didn’t lust after them, after all they are seen purely as a possession, a bit like a breading cow, not a human being. @@selvamthiagarajan8152yes in some countries hijabs are mandatory and it is used oppressively and not doing so can cost a woman her life.
In other countries it is not mandatory it is a choice they make out of modesty which is a teaching in their religion.
In the non mandatory countries it is the same as Pentecostal women not wearing pants or jewelry, Amish women dressing in muted colors and giving their hair with bonnets.

I hate to play devil's advocate; but most murderers get between 8 to 25 years, that's quite normal. I know right? I was shocked that a rapist in the US (and I think most western democracies) will only get a Maximum sentence of like 8 years, so they're eligible for parole in 4; but actually they usually only get 4-6 years to begin with and they're out in half that time. Crazy! But I do understand it, there are other circumstances where murder is committed and a 12-25 year sentence makes sense, and the law has to treat everyone the same wither the murder was committed in cold blood or hot. Very sad tale though.

There are always reasons to believe you need to do this or that before leaving but really if you are thinking of leaving you should have left already. Being in an abusive relationship means you’ve already been damaged slowly over time and twisted against yourself by the time you realize things are bad. This is usually the reason women stay in situations they should not. I am surprised given the nature of audio documentation the court did not make this an honor abuse case but perhaps the burden of proof is higher and it being capital murder they just wanted to get him convicted. If only she had just left and understood her 12k wasn’t worth dying for. But she let him get her pregnant and was now even more stuck. Escaping with her life would have at least spared her family and her future. Such a preventable tragedy.

Amazed BBC has left comments on for this one. I live in Edinburgh and have followed this case from the beginning and as far as I can tell a large part of the motivation for this was, yes, jealousy, but also the honour-based codes of Islam, which can so easily be used and abused to feed and justify one man’s need to control. I’m not specifically having a go at Islam here as I’m agnostic and mistrust *all* organised religion, but Hitchens had it right when he said quite simply: “religion poisons everything”.

I as well. Too often "islamophobia" is used as a shield to cover against legitimate criticisms Islam, and as this case has shown, result in real people being harmed and even killed. The fact that this man, who committed double homicide, received a minimum sentence (20 years) only inflames my suspicions of 'special treatment'.

There is no such 'honour code' in islam. Stop spreading nonsense or otherwise present your proof from scripture. Women are to be protected in islam. There is 0 excuse for this man's behaviour and he actually gets the death penalty in islam for what he has done (not a few silly years behind bars he will get in the west). We don't know the reason behind this poor girl's decision to not divorce him the instant he started showing his true abusive colours (maybe similar to most abuse victims who stay), but she had every right to in islam. Spreading this nonsense allows these criminals to get away with this behaviour by pointing at the wrong issue. HE is an abusive murderer and he deserves punishment for it.

Even men face abuse not long ago this white british lady tried to murder her white british partner and he seemed so terrified and under her control he couldn't even leave her even when the police was there! Unfortunately it takes a lot for anything to actually happen and for safety to be provided by someone since often times it only happens because the family or friends are too scared to involve themselves in the relationship...very sad indeed... really hope people will look around them selves and notice the signs! Don't ignore your white colleagues thinking "ah they're white no one can abuse them" or something ridiculous. Probably how the poor man was abused by his partner for so many years.

That poor mother, she knows that vile man, using religion to cover his evil, will get out of prison one day & carry on with his life. Whereas her daughter is gone forever. I wish women in this situation would leave while they can & not always be waiting for the right time, so many of them leave it till it’s too late. But saying that, many do leave only for the evil partner to stalk them & still kill them later. You should always leave a violent partner the very first time they abuse you, it only ever gets worse.

Khashif's family are no better. As far as I'm aware, they haven't shown an ounce of remorse for Fawziya's demise. They need to be fair and honest and return all of Fawziya's possessions. It shows that these are not good people. The marriage should have never happened as they are world's apart and the warning signs of his behaviour were there. She was treated badly from the beginning and then the abuse followed. One question comes to mind, if your daughter was an Angel, perfect in every way, why didn't you do some background checks on Kashif and his family. I totally agree the good what Fawziya was, a totally innocent and beautiful soul inside and out, why did you give your daughter away so easily to a virtually unknown person and I personally would not have accepted Fawziya going to live with his family. They should have arranged a place of their own. At the end of the day, it wasn't a good arranged match and the signs were there in the beginning before the actual marriage. It's always going to be hard for Fawziya's family and it's going to make little difference that this evil monster got a life sentence with minimum 20 years. Hope he has a hard time in prison and that he never ever gets released to experience the air of freedom again.

Not only has he murdered someone (his own wife) but the abuse and coersive bahaviour for clearly a long time warrants a massive sentence.
