  • Come check out the Herichthys carpintis Rio Hondo. A.k.a. the Pearlscale Cichlid.
This Central American beauty is vibrant with hues of blue and aqua and an intricate pearling pattern that shines in the light. This beast of a fish grows up to a foot long and has the temper to match.
Let's talk about how YOU can keep this fish successfully, and why you SHOULD!

Absolutely gorgeous fish & the colors just pop. What types of food are you feeding him?

I feed him larger pellets from Northfin and Xtreme, as well as occasional frozen shrimp.

Thanks for sharing. I'm considering homing (rescuing) my work fish who looks a WHOLE lot like this guy but in miniature and is kept in a pretty small tank. Trying to figure if it's a Texas or Carpintas cichlid so I can learn more to possibly adopt it for a bigger tank and better quality of life!

Good on you! It can be tough to tell those two apart, but they both have similar care requirements. So even if you can't ID them, you can research either species and be OK. :)

Awesome Carpintis. My young male is actually really personable, I guess it just varies from one individual to the other. I’m actually curious, how is old is this guy?

Thanks! Yea they look very similar to Texas cichlids. I find the H. Carpentis to be more blue and pearlescent, while Texas are greener.

Try to sell me African cichlids if one can. They’re beautiful some of them for sure. But they just seem to swim in groups, eat and make poop. Kind of like having gold fish. For my liking, you might just buy a painting and look at it cause nothing much is happening. What’s the fascination with them? American cichlids is so much more entertaining with personalities and social interactions/complications/challenge.

9' x 4' x 3' exterior dimensions. Interior dimensions are a bit smaller so comes out to a little over 600g.
