I don't know how to give this man appropriate credit for his reviews. Outlets like cnet and tomsguide/Android authority and the multitude of TH-camrs just seem to copy each other's reviews, yet no one tells me how well the sensors work and certainly not in such a controlled and repeatable/well documented manner. Good job man. I hope you get the visibility your content deserves.
Wow, that seemed almost like a quality investigative journalism. It's actually an outrageous, big news that Samsung try to sell us mostly the same or even (!) a bit downgraded watch and call it "new". Thank you for your research!
A guy in the internet doing 1 test verifies that the new model is less accurate XD interesting, you probably get fooled around pretty easily i suppose. No new tech model downgrades electronic parts ever XD, new tech is always slightly better (very marginal changes but changes nonetheless).
Your videos are fantastic but as others say I can't believe that you're the first person on youtube to actually try and test the specs and not just trust that the measurements are 100% correct from these smart devices. You're doing great work!
Bedankt Rob. Fantastische videos! So far for the promised "improved" sensor unit on watch 5. Can't believe it's also still not possible to automatically track cycling on watch 5.
I am soooo glad I find this video.. I just got the watch 4 a few days ago. I was considering returning the 4 & getting a 5. I'll save my money. THANK YOU‼️
Thank you so much for your review! You're the only TH-camr out there who actually talks facts rather than personal opinions when it comes to wearables and that is much appreciated! I was waiting for the Watch 5 for months and I'm more than disappointed but I'm grateful for your review as you've saved me quite some money! I'll be now waiting for the Pixel watch... hopefully coming in October 2022. Once again, thank you very much for your hard work!
I think there is a need for more software development. As seen the Watch 4 has improved over the time magnificent, it would be good to test the 5 again in 1 year or 1,5 years to see if the software gets better.
I've had the GW4 for about a year and I mostly agree with everything you found. The outlier for me was the GPS accuracy, i noticed that polling rate seems to differ between apps. On strava for example I can actually see instances where I swerved to avoid a pothole and I'd say the accuracy is within 1-2 meters. Also distance tracking while running has a +/-10% difference, Strava looking to be spot on while Samsung health for some reason is losing some info.
Bro this is probably the most amazing channel ever because of how detailed you test these watches. I dont think another channel could beat this! Thank you so much for your work!
I'm thinking software updates will fix it. samsung is known for having issues at launch. the GW4 is much older, and has a bunch of its kinks worked out already. So, im hoping the GW5 will get that same love.
Bought a GW4 Classic less than a month ago (during a special sale), so shortly before the GW5 announcement. Kicked myself initially, but your videos have been great to make me feel I made the right choice after all.
Thank you once again Rob for these amazing reviews! I am not surprised at all with the results. The watch fit of my dad performed better than my previous gw4, but is way more affordable. Samsung makes one of the best smartphones out there but the opposite is true with their smart watches. More on features (including experimental ones) and aesthetics, but with less accuracy.
@@TheQuantifiedScientist you're welcome. Your reviews are of great help especially to those who don't know much about the technical side of these gadgets.
Great video as always! I really hope samsung will not be trying to make the GW4 worse by releasing downgrading updates to push sales of the new watch. Not so unlikely when you think about
I’ve been binge watching some of your videos, they are fantastic. One way I was thinking you could compare the accuracy between two or more plots in the time vs hr of any activity (cycling, running or weightlifting) is by doing some numeric analysis. Subtracting area between of each wearable and the polar and comparing the residual areas can be a way of determining how accurate are they to the reference plot.
@@ThatWanderingNomad The sensor on the back has been changed slightly for more skin contact on the GW5, maybe the software isn't optimized for the new sensor design yet since they both sit slightly differently on the skin. Will be interesting to see where the GW5 sits after some updates (the GW4 also took some time to get more accurate)
With the GPS test did you use the "more accuracy" option on the watches, and also when doing the step test did you update within the app which hand the watch was worn on?
The thing that gets me, is that the GW4 still has major bugs. My watch has the issue where it will periodically remove itself from my Wear App, requiring a full reset to reconnect. I hope that the GW5 doesn't mean they abandon updates for the GW4
Hi Rob, Looking at the differences with the step count, I can't help to ask myself, did you change the watches and also change the setup in the app e.g. from/to dominant hand ? this could account for the difference, it's very odd that both watches are so accurate for the first half of the test and are off for the second..
Hi. First off your tests are awesome. Always watch your reviews before getting a smartwatch. So I was checking out the Huawei watch D and the options look awesome in that watch. The most attractive thing about that watch is the micro pump and air pouch that actualy uses proper method to measure stats. But you haven't checked out the accuracy of that watch, is there some reason why you haven't checked that watch or have you just not gotten around to it?
I'd like to offer a counter point that software improvements for the 4 after launch are an indication that the watch 5 is a long term sure bet. It will get an extra year of improvements, if not more due to the platform change. Now you can only review what's already there, but as a consumer it'd be a worthwhile consideration. Though for me I really don't see the value of these and other two day battery life watches. Seems like a lot of annoyances for little benefit over a Garmin or Huawei. In any case thanks for the video.
There's a saying "buy tech for what it IS, not what it could be, and especially no for what the company said it will be", I can't count how many times companies promised updates, new features, etc..and never delivered, or delivered less than promised, or 3 years late, or paywalled the update The most glaring example is Tesla Full Self driving kit, you choose to pay 10k more, for something that's "right around the corner" since 2016, yet people still choose to pay now 15k more, with absolutely no certainty that their car won't die of old age before it can "drive itself, become an appreciating asset"
