    One thing about bolt action shotguns and rifles the best safety in my opinion is leaving the bolt open until you're ready to shoot it. Or you could take it to a licensed gunsmith and have the issue fixed

    Hey everyone, please STOP offering kudos here! C’mon, this guy used “Channel Locks” & Squeezed the receiver together, Wow! Who would do that?? I know exactly what caused his hairline crack. If you don’t possess enough expertise to work on your firearm, then Don’t! Let someone with experience do it!! Wow.

    Hello. Great video on this issue. What I find interesting is this model is supposedly NOT what's recalled, the recalled shotguns numbers start a 583.13 and stop at 583.22. I inherited my 583.23 from my father. He had told me awhile back about the bolt issue. There is no screw right now and I am also noticing a safety issue also. I was wondering if you or anyone has taken theirs to a shop to get these issue fixed and if its worth it.

    I am really interested in what the crack looks like at the bolt latch.
    I have a 583.17 model that has not developed cracks (yet?) and does not have the firing pin problem either. But I am curious what I should be looking out for. I dont plan on shooting anything besides birdshot out of this gun.

    • @smileygladhands
      @smileygladhands ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got the same model and have been afraid to fire it for years because of the recall stuff. But I don't physically see any issues with the bolt or receiver, and it feeds smooth. Maybe I'll take it to the outdoor range one day and try to hip fire it so if it does fail I won't lose my face, maybe just a finger.

  • @InvisibleCitizen
    @InvisibleCitizen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just pulled my 583.23 out and disassembled it. I put it back together and my functions properly and well. Maybe you have one with an improperly machined receiver that missed being rejected by quality control. Mine has been shot hundreds of times and as I said, still functions well. Thanks for the heads up though.

    I have a 12 gauge 583.20 which is included in the recall. Just wondering which part failure is the reason for it? It fired ok without taking my face off the last time I tried it, around 1986. I am currently using it as a decoy.

    • @josephguite1580
      @josephguite1580 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As shown in the video, the receiver tubes tend to crack. Additionally, the sear & trigger wear down with use until the sear will no longer hold the firing pin in the cocked position - this causes the gun to “slam-fire” upon closing the bolt.

  • @boedayious4993
    @boedayious4993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Will look at mine. Bolt would fly back and hit you in the eye ball. Also if crack effect tolerances in trigger sear -- EMPTY ROUNDS -- successfully cock gun -- slapp side of gun near trigger or crack and see if gun FIRES
    You need a new receiver or part out gun. Maybe some shot heavy loads or 3 inch shells in your shotgun.
    UNSAFE TO SHIOOT this gun.

    The problem of the crack developed with the 12 gauge only as the receiver OD was the same in the 12, 16 and 20 gauge guns but the diameter of the bolt was the largest in the 12 hence the thin wall at the extractors channels.

  • @bobhatton1593

    In all the years I have worked on guns I have yet to see a cracked one as you state I read the stories of people pulling the bolt out and hitting them in the face that can only happen if the locking screw is missing sears lost the contract with mosberg so it was cheaper to buy back the bolts making the guns useless than having to stock parts or warranty them I have several of them and I'm in my sixties

    • @amerikhan8507
      @amerikhan8507 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yea its sort of an urban legend with these guns. From my research, in terms of recalled models, I could only find about a dozen or so reports of these issues. The guy who sued Sears didn't actually have his gun blow up. The bolt flew out and hit him in the face. Why? Because the retaining screw for the bolt was not properly torqued down. All bolt action guns suffer from this inherent design flaw as opposed to semi autos where the bolt will just slam into the back of the receiver. I currently own a 583.16 and I use it as a slug gun for deer. I always make sure that bolt screw is down and proper. Also, remember that the recall was for the 12 gauge models - not the 16s or 20s. Why? because the 12 gauge model is what the original lawsuit entailed. Sears decided to cover their ass and pay $160 for return of the bolts. Furthermore, remember that both 16 gauge and 20 gauge produce higher chamber pressure than 12 gauge. Long story short: tighten the screw and wear safety glasses.

    I have one of these exactly like the one in the video except in 20 gauge and a modified choke barrel (no adjustable choke). I believe my example was made by High Standard. It was given to me by a friend some years ago and is in excellent condition. I became concerned when I heard there was a recall on this model but I believe the recall was for the 12 gauge models. There is a bolt retaining screw on the left hand side of the receiver which must be fully screwed in and tight. I make sure that screw is in properly and tight before I shoot it. Poor design feature in my opinion on an otherwise good 'utility/knockabout' shotgun after watching this video I'll make sure to keep an eye on the receiver.

  • @trschreck
    @trschreck 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i have a .24 in 16 ga. and i noticed at 21 seconds into the video that the rear of the receiver was belled out. that the channel for the bolt handle was not parallel should have been your first clue that something is amiss. good that you caught this issue but i'd hesitate to assume that it will happen to all of them. that said, it is certainly something to look for when inspecting and cleaning.

    Good video , any time metal is machined , heat treated whatever stress is put in . After welding on this one or restoring one like this one it is a great idea to shot pean or at least glass bead blast the entire inside area . Even glass beading within the proper pressure will have an effect on the outer layers of material and micro deburr the sharp edges , reducing the chance if a stress riser to form or travel near as far . Probably best to just use birdshot in these old glories.

      “If you still have the gun, check the cross pin in the bolt & the sear in the receiver. The points where these meet wear down & then they won’t properly engage (I.e., lock together or “cock”), causing the firing pin to strike upon lowering the bolt handle.”

    To those discussing the recall, what was the magic “fix” that solved the problem? *As far as I can tell* everything on the 23 is identical to the 14-17 12 gauges.

      High Standard didn’t recall them because it wasn’t their problem, they just built them to Sears’ specks. But even if you don’t believe these receivers were machined too thin, there seem to be plenty of people (including me, the guy in the video, & others in the comments here) who have ones prone to misfiring. If yours still works, congrats, but I’d recommend using only low powered ammunition in these things.

    • @ctang5954
      @ctang5954 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would using steel-cased ammo like Winchester white box target loads be a problem for these? I know they're low-powered loads but not sure if that could be riskier than brass

    • @AndrewSanders-n3h

      Never ever use steel shot in these !!!!! The barrels can't expand enough to accommodate steel shot ! Very bad idea and has probably ruined A LOT of early / old shotgun barrels. Most any late model gun it is not a problem.

      The bolt is missing because these things we're recalled. Because they'd crack where pictured and the bolt would come out the back. I have the same gun, it auto fires like this at times. Biggest issue is the bolt coming out under pressure
