Hi guys! We hope you liked this video. What is the biggest culture shock you have ever experienced? Let us know 👇😊
Great video!
The only culture shock I've experienced was hearing/seeing a gasoline-powered leaf blower being used (February 2023) in Switzerland... Lausanne Switzerland 😳 Update... I also seen a leaf blower being used here in Goldswil a few days ago 😵💫
Love it!
@@gr_br huh? what is strange about it? If your property is large you would need a very long cable.
Zurich : somebody comes up to your car telling you that you are not within the lines of your parking place.
Formerly from US, living in Zurich (and part-time in Barcelona) for the past year:
-The contradiction of a sporty culture, but so many smokers/vapers. It's strange to see so many directly poisoning themselves, while exercising and generally eating better quality foods.
-Shopping several times per week, and the number of stores that I have to visit to complete my list. Frozen section at Migros, milk (1.75L 1.5%), bread, and alcohol selection at Coop, Soda (variety in containers smaller than 2L) at Denner.
-The percentage of businesses entirely closed on Sunday is another big adjustment.
-The expense of fresh meat/fish/poultry, drinks at bars/clubs, dining out, (I once had a bill for 97 CHF, at an Indian restaurant, for one entre, some naan and two cocktails) rents (expensive, even by SF Bay area standards, where I rented an entire house with a yard, for what I now rent a 1 bedroom apartment), and (compared to Barcelona, at least) public transportation (An annual Zurich pass is approximately 4x the cost of 12 months worth of T-Casual passes, and adding a zone, in 1 direction is about double the cost).
-Having a dedicated bomb shelter downstairs (two year old apartment building, not WWII era) and receiving Potassium Iodide pills from the government (I live within 50km of a nuclear power plant).
Hey there thanks so much for sharing your insights. Always very interested in what other people are writing! Have a great weekend.
A bomb shelter??? Wow 😮
@@norbertweber3152 It is an obligation to have access to a shelter for every person. If there are no public shelters nearby there must be one built in the cellar. Switzerland has 9 million shelter places so the protection rate is over 100%.

Thanks so much for your support 🧡
Amazing content as always guys! This video is edited so well and the music has been selected very wisely. I love the background music at 4:30, that fits so well haha! Also really funny Claudia in the beginning of the video. So much information in such a short time was conveyed with humor.🤣 Well done! 😂
Wow thanks so much for your kind comment. We appreciate it a lot ⭐️🧡
Amazing video, as always! Keep it up 😁☺️
Thanks so much 🧡
Hi guys. Thank you for the video. It is always interessting to get an outside perspective on your own country. And, you are doing it in a nice and understanding way :-). A few thoughts from me (Swiss):
Referendum on vacation/holiday: Law guarantees us 4 Weeks of paid vacation. The initiative wanted to grand 6 Weeks (not 5). Thats why it failed, I guess. If they had demanded 5 weeks, the Swiss would have said "yes". Because many employers grand 5 weeks. Often a initiative goes "over the top" on purpose in order to put pressure on the Government for them to work out a compromise. My guess is: The initiators thought, the government would create an alternative plan for 5 weeks, but they did not.
Age of Retirement: You said, the Swiss said yes for women to work longer. Important detail: with that, they equalised the age of retirement for men and women. Because men had to work 2 years longer than women before that.
Swiss flag on Coke: it is a way to tell the consumer, that this might be an American product, but people in Switzerland produce it (the labour is done localy).
Opening hours in shops: This is to protect the people working there. There are 1 or 2 days a week, where shops have longer opening hours. Often: Friday until 9 p.m. But shops are usually quite empty then. So if you want to shop calmly, Friday night is a good time. it its not black friday like tomorrow :-).
Keep on going.

Great content, guys! ❤ I’ve experienced most of these culture shocks when I travelled to Switzerland some years ago.😅😅
Thank you very much for watching 💘
Hello from Washington D.C.!!! I really loved today's video. You had a lot of interesting information and you guys were so cute!. I agree, when I first visited Zurich I was amazed to see lots of "older" people hiking up mountains. I think its wonderful.
Thank you very much for your comment!! ⭐️❤️
New sub here! Ive been watching your videos lately. Keep em coming! 🎉
The vote was not for 25 days of vacation but 30. 20 is the legal minimum but most companies give 25. There are negotiations between professions and unions on working conditions so some professions have mandatory 25 days. The swiss are attached to that system of negotiations between corporations and unions that is why they refused the law. If it had been for 25 days it probably would have passed. A lot of people thought 30 was too much for the economy to absorb.
About the retirement age: For men it was already 65 and for women it was 64. The vote was for women to also retire at 65. I personally voted no to that because the law lacked early retirement possibilities for tough jobs. Swiss are aware of the responsibility they have when voting and sometimes vote against their direct interests in order to maintain prosperity and order in the country.
Thanks for your comment! ✨👍
Just subscribed to your channel coz I feel your content is very palatable! Love it! Keep em coming!

I think the Swiss flag is everywhere because it's such a good graphic symbol that goes everywhere. We have the same thing here in Canada, where logos will use a Canadian flag instead of an apostrophe, for example.

I sighted the little boy showing his swag behind the scene 😂

Great job! I really enjoy your videos! Please keep them coming. And your energy and chemistry is something I enjoy very much! I have learned so many random facts about Switzerland which add a lot of perspective to everyday life. Now regarding the trash bags I am a bit hesitant about the fairness of the tax being already integrated in the price. What if a bag has holes? Hahaha
Greatest culture shock so far is Dutch bicycle culture. There is nothing a native Dutch can't do on a bicycle. I do enjoy when people are sporty and I am glad it is the same in Switzerland.

Another one - you hit it right out of the park again - I love the quality of your videos. I have been going to Zurich my whole life visiting family and hope to one day move there for a year or two.
A video idea might be a vlog doing the Zurich Travel Day Pass? Start with going to Rapperswil and get the boat back to Zurich perhaps. Could highlight how easy (but expensive) it is to get around Zurich and the different options.

I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one who sees all these wierd things in Switzerland! 😂 Great Video!!!
Thanks! 😃
Coming from the U.S. I was surprised to see Swiss argue heatedly a couple of times without actually physically fighting at some point. The Swiss seem quite civilized in that way. I was also struck by how fair the Swiss are on the autoroute when construction takes traffic to one lane the Swiss take turns merging into one lane. Again, very civilized. I have lived here for almost 20 years now and I've become a Swiss citizen myself. I have to say that I quite love Switzerland and the Swiss. It's a beautiful country for a very good reason - the Swiss take good care of it.
You should try visit Ticino in the southern and italian speaking part of Switzerland. You'll discover another country within the country :-)
Haha Yes, we need to go and visit Ticino!! ☀️
Btw the airport of Geneva is also located between Switzerland and France. :)

the water in Zurich comes from Lake Zurich. Technically it also comes from the mountains, but people have already put their feet in it. (but is treated and therefore perfectly edible)

Welcome to CH! I am amazed that you have not discovered that you can shop for food until 8 pm almost everywhere. Chanel closing at 6 is mo great loss 🤣
I think you have three exits in Basel: DE, FR, CH
Wow really?? 😮 We didn’t see the third exit
biggest shock, we have to pay for health insurance, and when we go to the doctor or make any OP, we have to pay the bills up to 2500 franks, and fter that the health insurance steps in and pay 90 % of the bills.
Thanks for sharing your insights!
Shops in Zurich are open until 20:00, some until 22:00 and gas station shops are sometimes open 24/7, though. In other cantons they might close earlier.
Hello thanks for your comment. Depends on the shop, but we see many shops that close at 18-19 :-) (not big supermarkets). Have a great Friday.
... And of course in most cities you have train stations that are actually full blown shopping malls and can be open 24/7.
My culture shock #1 in Switzerland, when I entered my sparkling , perfect, no b lemishes apartment. In the notes of the checkin, it noted there was a tiny scratch on the floor, which I sttruuggled osee.
Now I know why the whole country looks so perfect!
I knew you were a Channel number 5 guy! xD
Hahaha thanks for the comment 😅
2:10 - The flags are used as a nice way to make the streets and places more beautiful. In Switzerland, the flag tradition is rather on the side of making something nice to look at than being nationalist or patriotic though historically, flags tend to be linked to communities. You will find many people having a mast where cantonal, communal or even old flamed flags are displayed by people who just don't care about politics, far-left to far-right with the centre in between. The link the Swiss have with their national flag has nothing to do with patriotism. It's just a «common» object of everyday life to make the place «nicer» to look at. It's so not important that, again, national flag can be easily replaced with communal, cantonal, district or even European flag a bit everywhere in the country.
Schön! Diese ist so nett und interessant. Vielen Dank fürs Teilen, Claudia und Jan 🙏

Hahah yes true, Zurich is small 😀
would u prefer denmark, norway over switzerland ?
That is a difficult question and can not be answered in a single comment 👍😃
Thank you very much. I really enjoy your videos. One important and weird thing that I miss is that Switzerland is a Confederation. A bit like the EU. Zürich is in Suisse alémanique (German speaking). I come from Genève and Vaud, Suisse romande (French speaking). This makes a big difference. For example, the votation you very rightly mentioned to add 5 days of vacation was accepted widely in Suisse romande, but rejected by the German speaking part. They are the largest group. Some of them are also the people who want to keep things as they were 50 years ago.
Hey there thanks so much for your comment 🙌⭐️ We are happy to read you and are grateful that you shared your thoughts 😀
In South Africa we have 11 official languages (o_o)

You call those things "Weird" ?
Technically Basel Airport's full name is called Basel Mulhouse Friedberg Airport and the airport is actually in France but because the closest largest city is Basel its called Basel airport.
Ah wow we did not know thanks for sharing 👋🏄♂️
1:36 In France/ Alsace you are not allowed to throw glas bottles in the container on Sundays too ! Or after 20:00h…
2:55 Are you aware the Swiss Coke has a different recipe ?
3:45 18:30 is not 18:00 ! Don’t you remember the hours in Germany? I remember Wednesday afternoon closed by 14:00 some years ago! Go to the train station to shop until 22:00 !
5:00 The European Constitution- voted against in the 1990’s-had the popular vote in it…nobody understood that !
9:33 This fact makes Basel Airport -Euro-Airport- the only one with two assignments ,BAS & MLH, and so the only true “International” Airport worldwide !
09:23 Actually Basel Airport has three exits: France, Switzerland and Germany 😉

Why would you not? Give me one reason why you would not prefer to let a person into your home who you can assess because you are more familiar with the way he speaks, his body language, and possibilities to verify what he tells you about him than a person who speaks a different language, you are not familiar with his body language and find it difficult to find references on him you can easily check?
they mark consumer products with swiss flag to prevent grey imports and show that it was made for switzerland. In Switzerland people do not like "government gifts" because they know that they have to pay fo it and there is no free money.

Switzerland is like one of the paramount of world in terms of quality of people and the system. I think it must be difficult for one to feel special or even compitent while living there. The standarts are so high that anyone not prepared may easily fall from that hight. Intimidating...
that is more a biased view some people have based on the experience in the Zürich expat/money bubble, it's a very diverse society although inequality is low
@@MaurazioAll lies. Switzerland is not diverse but mostly homogenous and there's big inequality between the rich and poor.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your opinion
Everyone is sporty because health insurance is freaking expensive. So that's the reason! 😅
Haha 😂
Swiss Coke bottles have the Swiss Made on it because a few years back Coca Cola Switzerland wanted to raise the prices a big retailors weren't having it, so they inported coke from the EU and made big coke sales instead of raising the prices. To combat this Coca Cola Switzerland started appelling on the Swissness of their products. Swissness is something Swiss people are really proud of. So Coca Cola basically told their costumers that Coke Bottles without the Swiss Made on it are no good. The retailers had to give in since not all retailers were doing it and some even helped Coca Cola Switzetland market their Swissness to compete with their competitors and so Coca Cola Switzerland was able to trick Swiss people into paying more for the same good, just because there is a Swiss Made on the bottle.
Wow, interesting!! Thanks a lot for your comment and explanation!! ⭐️
Another difference is the volume of the bottles. The imported bottles are 500ml and the Swiss Made ones 450ml. CocaCola Switzerland reduced the bottle size and kept the price. Not only for Cola, but for all other sodas they sell.
I refuse to buy the smaller bottles, but many don't seem to notice, remember or care.
Very interesting thanks for sharing 💯✨👍
Technically, the fourth language is a language group ;)
What do you mean?
i think the reason for the swiss coke is not "cool" ;) we have very high prices here, that includes coke. as a swiss grocery store coca cola only allows you to buy coke from their swiss bottling plant for the high price. some discounters tried to get their coke from germany as example to buy and maybe sell it cheaper and only since then those bottles have a swiss flag so consumers and maybe coca cola can see that its not imported... not so cute :P the swiss flag is the symbol that coke rips you off with the price, but thats like this for a lot of brand goods.
Thank you very much for your comment. Very interesting info!!

Wait until Jan learns about British Royal Warrants if he thinks sticking the flag on is weird.
Hello, why do you think that?
@@claudiaandjan Because having a symbol on consumer products to show the royal household regularly uses them is even stranger, especially for someone from Germany. Do Spain do the same?
Zurich Sacks cost so much cause you dont pay taxes for trash separately. So you need to pay less if you dont need much.
Thanks for your comment!
Why did the swiss vote that way? 🤔
We don’t know actually 😃
If you have 30 instead of 20 (and many have 25 guaranteed anyway due to contracts) paid holidays, someone, here all working people, have to pay for it with their additional work or efficiency, the money to finance this has to be generated first. Switzerland doesn’t have natural resources that bring in money easily. Voters are responsible and have the whole picture in mind. Salaries are negotiated between Labour unions and industries on regular base, both need each other and if both sides are reasonable, both do better than if just one side gets too much of the cake. Swiss people are used to compromise for the better of all, which might be one of the key reasons that it works better than other countries.
Bern the capital has the slowest pacing people in the world
Thanks a lot for your comment :-) What experience did you make to say so?
Why?

Switzerland has direct democracy, which means that citizens deal much more with the state, the economy, etc. In switzerland everyone feels like they are a little president and not someone who is being governed. The swiss know that their wealth comes from their work and not from money-making resourcessuch as oil, etc. This automatically leads to the to the question of more holidays: „yes, more free time would be nice, but who will pay for the days off without losing wealth?“
Hello thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Guess what, safety, peace and clean beautiful towns come at a price - it's called following a couple of rules that actually make a lot of sense. I dont want to hear your noise on a Sunday, I don't want random trash littering parks, I don't want pink greek palaces standing next to old Swiss chalets.....in Switzerland the individual does not trump the overall wellbeing of the community .
Not elections. Voitings. It’s a different.
Hello, thanks for your comment.
most of my friends and I in zürich work 80% so we can use the free day to shop haha
Haha Lucky them!! 😊
Prices for lifts to go up the mountains were also a big shock. Especially without half tax.
True!!
It is true that products for different countries may have different ingredients (i.e.: quality). German Coca Cola does have the same ingredients as the Swiss one though, I believe it was cheaper too... The past weeks, my morning train to Zurich airport was "always" a few minutes late. "So annoying", lol. As for opening hours, it causes quite some queues at Chanel on Saturdays indeed, but the Swiss tend to like queues, I have the impression :D
Original taste, bullshit...doesn't taste cocaine anylonger😂😂😂
Haha, thanks for your comment :)
Very interesting video!
I think the main issue with direct democracy comes when a great proportion of people is not actually affected by the thing discussed.
Take for example the military service. It is and was only mandatory for men and there have already been votings to make it optional. Nevertheless it was rejected and so it is still mandatory for men and men only. I don’t want to judge anybody but I think woman and people that are over 30 years old (because after 30 your service has finished) had no intentions to vote for ’yes‘ to make it optional because they would not gain anything...
Thanks a lot for this insight and sharing your opinion. I understand your way of thinking 🤔
Buillshit . Military is not a recreational activity that affects the person doing it. Switzerland has one of the strongest military to protect its safety . Since it’s a neutral state. Of course women have a say in it all people should have a say in it on the safety of their country
I don't think so at all
Voting it's called. Elections are when it's about people. 😉
Thank you for the clarification 😊
What's so strange about not being allowed to recycle on a Sunday? It causes noise, if you live next to such a container you are very grateful for the rule. I find it rather strange that people find such normal things strange and have to make a video about it.
