Hi guys, nice and useful video. I was wondering if you can make a video about life work balance in Switzerland. How many hours do people work and how demanding is working in Switzerland. Many thanks and keep up!
I was a Software Engineer in Zurich (i just quit my job to become an entrepreneur). I started with 89000 CHF/Year as a Junior. Last Year i was earning 110.000 CHF/Year after 6 years of Experience. I could easily get a Job between 120.000 CHF/Year - 130.000 CHF/ Year as a Senior Software Engineer.
Hey there thanks for sharing your insights! Really interesting ⭐️🙂 We are always very happy when people are sharing their experiences 🙌 We wish you best of luck with your project!
As a Senior Software Engineer in Zürich I can confirm, that these salary ranges are correct. If you are fresh from university, then I would highly recommend not to accept a job that is offering less than around 84.5k, with 40h week and 25 days of holiday per year. This is the typical minimum salary for someone with a Master Degree (and around 80k with Bachelor). I have seen Junior Devs accepting sometimes way much less and then looking for a new job after they found out how much others in the same company make. My advice to you: Even if you are tending to be less self-confident, be aware that the others that are applying to the same job only have the same skills than you. Even the Googlers dont know much more than you when you are fresh from Uni. My experience is that the Googlers most often know much less. Their only skills are to sell themself well, be confident, to memorize useless interview questions well and they have the persistence to get into such a job. So, dont underestimate yourself, be confident and also ask for a salary of at least around 85k. If you are accepting less, then it is your own fault, because HR will pay as low as they can get it.
Great comment, very useful especially for juniors. I am a senior software engineer with Masters degree, fluent in German and would like to get a job in Switzerland. The problem is, the job offers that I get are around 120-130k. How do people get salaries over 160k? Are there any companies except the big five?
@@filippoboiani1386 It really depends from company to company. In my current company you get the full salary paid out without any bonus or option. In other companies the split between salary and bonus is around 85:15 to 90:10. At least this is what I experienced.

I've been searching for a Java Backend job for a few months now in Switzerland and it's not easy at all. I have almost 2 years of experience with a bachelors degree in computer science and I'm an EU Citizen. I also speak fluent English but not German/Italian/French. After I finished university I applied in switzerland. Then when I got a job offer I moved to switzerland. I started with a salary of 110k and now I am earning 120k after 2 years. I think my salary for an enginner is good, but can always be better :) Luckywise I am not in germany anymore, my best offer I got was about 65k in germany, after tax you will be poor in germany :(
@@kylmorevossexactly, I come from Eastern Europe and my salary more than doubled after 2 years, in 4 years I had 4 times more. We always calculate netto there and after just 4 years I had 3500€ netto. Now I live in Germany and earn 5300€ netto, 108k before taxes.
As a senior in IT you can make 150k (if you work for a large company). 130k would be in a smaller company. But in my experience knowing German is almost always a must (at least B1-B2). So learn German otherwise it will be hard even in tech.
It's a very informative video. It would be nice if you could make a video about the work culture in Switzerland, specifically in Zurich. I live in the Netherlands, and the work-life balance and work culture are incredible. Is Zurich the same as Amsterdam in this matter?
I had a friend that moved to Switzerland after 14 years of Australia. After 3 years in Switzerland he concluded "in Australia we work to get to live our lives, in Switzerland, people live to get to work as much as possible."
Hey Jan & Claudia, I'm afraid these numbers are well below market average for IT in Zurich. The real question here is: are these graphs based on the advertised salary range? And how many of these jobs actually get filled within the advertised salary range?
Tbh hard to believe a IT professional earn that low anywhere in Switzerland..... Comon! A simple welder or bus driver earn around 80-100k Gross. It's really sad if their salary graphs are accurate.
I suspect they are considering a bottom barrel employee, because no way in hell any self respecting swe//senior see (or above) would go in Switzerland for 100-120k.. Even taking out of context my own experience with formal offers from Switzerland, my friend working there in the 9-10 you secure around 180-240+ bonus, give or take a few k depending on the area of expertise 😊
@@witchedwiz The salaries are correct. The IT people are not good paid in Switzerland. Take my example: Master in Physics from ETH worked ~1 year abroad as researcher in a famous research organization(where I used C++ and physics, there I earned around 2000 Euro) then I worked 1.5 years as C++ programmer in Switzerland as a Junior where i worked for 70000.- Now I earn 90K as a C++ programmer in Zurich! I will look for a new job and try it in the consulting field, because yes it is indeed a joke!
These numbers are pretty accurate. Swiss goverment offered insights about salaries for a long time. They have to know it exactly since they get the taxes. Currently they are rebuilding their tool, but it matches pretty much the numbers of the video.
Thank you for this informative video. I think the salary of UX/UI designers in Zurich is also an exciting topic. Hopefully, both of you can cover this topic.
Hi Claudia and Jan! Thank you for your analysis and the video! 😊 I am a Senior Software engineer in Stuttgart and made a research how much I could earn in Switzerland with my job. Unfortunately I was disappointed because the max was 150k and as a consultant, normal jobs were around 120k. How is it possible that it is so low and that there is such a small difference between a Junior and a senior? My current salary in Germany ist 108k. I come from East Europe and a Junior earns around 1200€, a Senior around 3500€ netto, while the average country salary is 1000€, so IT people have really a lot of money in comparison to other jobs. How come people in Switzerland accept to get barely more than somebody who didn't even finish 10 classes?
Yes, this surprises me as well. But you still have the benefit of taxes. With 150k in 12 months, you have net 6.806,17 Eur / Month in Germany, while in Switzerland with 120k in 12 Months you have net roughly 7.619,73 Eur per month. I'd say it's still worth it, but of course the benefit shrinks, considering the higher living costs. For jobs with lower income, there is also the rule that you should earn 2x as much as you get in Germany. The higher your salary, the less this rule works out it seems.
@@bakkecske91 Romania, all my ex university mates earn around 3000-3500€ after taxes as software engineers with 8-10 years of experience. Freelancers even 8000€ after taxes. These salaries are only in IT and medicine field. Engineers get a bit lower, 2000€.
Atat am primit si eu maxim 125-130k in Zürich. Daca as gasi un post peste 160k m-as si muta in cateva luni. Dar de unde? Am prieteni romani in Zürich si fix atat castiga ca programatori seniori, 120-130k cum zic si astia in video. Imi poti da un pont unde se castiga 200k?
Insured salary is not 7/8 of your gross salary. It is your gross salary up to the statuary max (which is around 90k) minus coordinated salary which is 7/8 of the minimum salary. And withholding tax is not the tax rate of the gross salary but of a gross salary minus certain reduction. So you can actually reduce the withholding tax base if you, for example, pay in the third pillar.
Now, could you do one on Hardware/VLSI engineer? I was a former software engineer who switched to a System-on-Chip engineer. Is there a Semiconductor industry in Switzerland?
No; STI microelectronics kicked the proverbial bucket years ago; you might be able to land a job at a small to medium sized company, or Ruag, the national arms manufacturer, but neither of those will pay you what you're really worth.
Next, compare it to secondary school teachers. My understanding is that fresh out of college, they make around 110k CHF annually. This would be far more surprising than the software engineering salaries. In addition, my understanding is that only 6% of teachers is foreign, with 3% (50% of the 6%) being from Germany. Meaning it is a profession foreigners will find almost impossible to get into.
Good video but everything is just in theory. Nowadays, no one is hiring junior developers, I had to leave Switzerland after my studies for this reason.
This is another grat video! :) I am really surprised how low the salaries for senior software engineers are in comparison to the juniors, barely higher. Are there no companies except FAANG that offer salaries above 130k? I would like to apply for those.
The salary information they share in the video is very accurate. As a software engineer you earn a reasonable salary, but most of the time you don't earn like a lawyer, a consultant, a financial expert or a doctor. As a software engineer you belong to the mid-to-upper part of the swiss middle class and nothing more. It is not completely impossible to earn more but very rarely. If you want to get a super high-paying job STEM is not the right thing to do.
@@rh2872 I don't think so. I doubt that the "Fachkräftemangel" is as big as the companies claim. This starts with the ridiculous job interviews which often consists of multiple rounds over weeks or even months, assesment-exercises that need 3-9 hours to solve them - for a boring and not very difficult programming job... The salaries are not super high and in the average you need 9 months to find a new job as a developer in Switzerland. The companies can just do that because they have so many applicants from all over the world. They have no interest in educating their employees by themself, they just can look for the "Wollmilchsau". The job of a software engineer is completely overrated, mostly it is boring, you have nothing to say, and will never make a good career. If you want to become rich and powerful it is still the same as 20 years ago: become a lawyer, a specialized doctor or a finance specialist. Another sad thing: A big part of software engineers made a master/phd in physics, math or electric engineering, in this time the people sacrified most of their personal time to ETH or other universities. most of them are extremly overqualified for a simple programming job like "create a new red button". There are too many academics, too many immigrants(i can understand them) and too many companies that advertise jobs for which you needed an apprenticeship in later times and today a master degree.
Great. And how many big-macs (and rent, cars, food etc.) can you buy with that? That comparison (0:50) ist just nominal, adjusted (to what you spend in Zürich) it would be a little less, i think.
Thanks, the video (and comments) is interesting. We are here with some of the highest salaries in the world, so it’s impressive. If we add to that that taxes are particularly low (especially since they include contributions), that the the country offer many accessible services like many European countries (health care, education, etc.) and infrastructure general quality, it is particularly high. Of course, life is expensive there, but the standard of living will remain of high quality overall. With a mostly higher salary than everyone else in other countries, you also keep the possibility of offering yourself goods, trips and retirements abroad (but many are too well off in Switzerland to leave) at proportionately less expensive than anyone else. (There are of course other jobs and other countries with great salaries. But here it is a relatively quiet job which simply requires being smart and hardworking, having a good diploma and learn German... even if being friendly, charismatic or handsome will help as with almost all jobs and life in general)
Cardiologist or radiologist with same 8 years of experience as Senior Software engineer meanwhile earns around CHF 400.000-600.000 Why these big differences between 2 high demand professions then? Its sad.
Totally true, a senior software engineer salary in Zürich should be at least 200k. I really cannot imagine how software engineers with experience after 4-6 years of studies work for almost the same money as someone who barelly finished 10 classes.
you cannot compare these two professions! a doctor often has the responsibility of someones life and a really really long training, whereas anyone could become a software engineer within a year if he's capable doing it (without a degree)...
There are too many software engineers in the world. Supply & demand. Companies can simply outsource to India & have a team of experienced engineers instead of paying for 1 Swiss who will get the same code from Google anyway
@@j134679 Outsourcing to a team in India = rewriting the whole code myself because nothing worked 1-2 days before client presentation 🤦♀️ after having this happen multiple times I quit the job and switched to a company which doesn't Outsource to India
Hi this is very nice, can you also make a video maybe using the same salary and net salary, and also adding rent, bills and insurance to the calculation, so we can see how much is really left. Also including groceries. Thank you!
Hi Marcos. Thank you very much for your kind comment! We are super happy you like the video. In order to learn more about the cost of living in Zurich, we invite you to watch the video “Cost of living in Zurich” that you will find in our channel. Best regards!! 😊
I feel like the median shared gives a wrong impression of what people can expect. Yes 50% of the people earn more, but 50% also earn less. If you look at the pay ranges on swissdevjobs they tend to lay between these ranges, but mostly people get hired on the lower end. Especially if you are going to smaller companies and not large corperations. Also consider, that many companies pay 13 months salary, not 12. So the 100k needs to be devided by 13.
Thanks guys! I’ve found your video quite interesting. Could you please make a video about the third pillar and how does it work in Switzerland? I’d like to find out more about this topic.
Even more financial sector. And that's the problem with IT, that they don't pay much at the beginning (in electrical engineering you can earn 5-9k CHF net) MfG, quatsche bisschen ;)
I don't really understand how can be a high demand university profession as Software Engineer or any similar IT workers earn that low. Seriously even as senior the median barerly above 100k... WTH? My friend a simple factory welder without any diploma and getting 7000 CHF Gross with 13. Salary to. So he getting around 91K gross as a factory worker welder..... Almost same amount as a Software engineer at mid level.... Its really sad and bad in the same time.
Law of supply & demand. Everyone wants to be in IT, so the supply is too high. Less people want to do manual labor, so traditional manual labor jobs are increasing in salary. Lots of medical workers died during the pandemic, so it's a good field to get into in the near future.
great video, I was thinking about moving to Switzerland, but I wonder if I don't speak local languages is that would be easy to secure a job as a junior software engineering

I think my salary for an enginner is good, but can always be better :) Luckywise I am not in germany anymore, my best offer I got was about 65k in germany, after tax you will be poor in germany :(
Thank you very much for your informative comment. Very interesting to know!! 😊
In which sector do you work ? Software engineer in finance?
2 years and only 10% increase? It's quite sad.
I am swiss, I am graduated 3 years ago and I earn 90k as a c++ programmer. Your job offer is really good.
Amazing video guys as always. I love the in-depth analysis!
Thanks for the comment!
As a senior in IT you can make 150k (if you work for a large company). 130k would be in a smaller company. But in my experience knowing German is almost always a must (at least B1-B2). So learn German otherwise it will be hard even in tech.
Thank you very much for your great comment and insights 😊
Considering the average salaries of other professions, I'd say software engineers don't earn enough.
You are very creative and your videos help us a lot!
Thanks so much for your comment!
It's a very informative video. It would be nice if you could make a video about the work culture in Switzerland, specifically in Zurich. I live in the Netherlands, and the work-life balance and work culture are incredible. Is Zurich the same as Amsterdam in this matter?
Thank you very much for your message. We take note about your suggestion regarding making a video on work/life balance in Zurich 😊
I had a friend that moved to Switzerland after 14 years of Australia. After 3 years in Switzerland he concluded "in Australia we work to get to live our lives, in Switzerland, people live to get to work as much as possible."
@@14mrb67 your friend ain't lying. we are so stressed here and pay for even breathing or existing
Are you kidding? Most people work 42+ hours per week; 50 to 80 hours is not uncommon.
Take my example:
Master in Physics from ETH
worked ~1 year abroad as researcher in a famous research organization(where I used C++ and physics, there I earned around 2000 Euro)
then I worked 1.5 years as C++ programmer in Switzerland as a Junior where i worked for 70000.-
Now I earn 90K as a C++ programmer in Zurich!
@@halloyvesYes it supposed to be ready again in fall but they have another interesting graphs to take a look in their page

Thank you for this informative video. I think the salary of UX/UI designers in Zurich is also an exciting topic. Hopefully, both of you can cover this topic.
Great suggestion!
Yes, I would also like to hear about UX/UI designer salaries in Switzerland. I really like this format, you made great and detailed video! 😊
The higher your salary, the less this rule works out it seems.
which country are you from . I am also EE but 3500 netto as employee is not normal here
@@bakkecske91 Romania, all my ex university mates earn around 3000-3500€ after taxes as software engineers with 8-10 years of experience.
Imi poti da un pont unde se castiga 200k?
thanks for the video it motivates me to study hard to get in Switzerland

This is exactly what I was searching for regarding IT and software engineering in Switzerland, danke! Keep doing videos, you guys got a new sub ;)
It‘s good to know something about the system of the Swiss
Thanks so much for your comment!
Been there in Bern as a tourist, really nice place!
Hey there thanks so much for your comment! We are taking note and also interesting facts that you shared 🙌 Have a wonderful week 😃⭐️

This is another grat video! :) I am really surprised how low the salaries for senior software engineers are in comparison to the juniors, barely higher. Are there no companies except FAANG that offer salaries above 130k? I would like to apply for those.
Thanks for sharing!
The career path can go higher but you move to management, so technically no longer a software engineer
@@pitschquitsch6858That is because most software devs sell themselves under value. Some software devs in Zurich earn like lawyers.
Hey there, thanks for your comment and reflections! Have a wonderful weekend!
Great video! Could you make a video about how much physcists make?
1:11 Median salary is not equivalent to average salary. I expect the average salary to be higher than the median salary.
Could you please update this topic with a video, including Data Sciences jobs in Switzerland?
C permit holders also don’t have automatic withholding.
Great video! I received a job offer for Senior Software Engineer and I will relocate to Zurich in July. 🎉
You’re not saving live with stackoverflow code
you cannot compare these two professions! a doctor often has the responsibility of someones life and a really really long training, whereas anyone could become a software engineer within a year if he's capable doing it (without a degree)...

Hey Claudia and Jan! What about the salary ranges for Senior / Lead UX Designers in Zurich? #UX
Loved the video ! My question is can you get a job as an software engineer in Switzerland working remotely/hybrid from another country in EU?

I don't really understand how can be a high demand university profession as Software Engineer or any similar IT workers earn that low. Seriously even as senior the median barerly above 100k... WTH? My friend a simple factory welder without any diploma and getting 7000 CHF Gross with 13. Salary to. So he getting around 91K gross as a factory worker welder..... Almost same amount as a Software engineer at mid level.... Its really sad and bad in the same time.
that's true! I often ask myself the same question. people nowadays can earn a lot of money without studying.. real work doesn't pay off anymore!
Law of supply & demand. Everyone wants to be in IT, so the supply is too high.
Less people want to do manual labor, so traditional manual labor jobs are increasing in salary.
Lots of medical workers died during the pandemic, so it's a good field to get into in the near future.
@@DrFaggioni I would argue that welding is a much more "real" work than the IT
