    I edited this video a bit differently than some of my others. Please share your thoughts. In case you don't notice the differences, the primary three are that I don''t speak to the camera at all (until the end), I let the shots play out on screen for longer than I typically do and I used less music. Did this video hold your attention?

    I'm sure everyone watches for their own reasons. I'm an avid hiker and personally watch hiking/backpacking videos to try and get a real-life feel for a place and experience. For me, videos that play a lot of music and show beautiful imagery are nice, but they are more like those ambient background videos you can play for hours on end. I like to hear the actual sounds, see the visual reality of the trip as well as hear the storyline of what is occurring. Also, I LOVE your trail runners. I have them in both colors and wear them on all my hikes. Have a wonderful day!

    I loved this video! There is a real visceral element to it. The truth is backpacking is hard. It's hot, cold exhausting and uncomfortable. Even drinking delicious life saving water is different than at home. You are out of breath, it's probably warm, may have a dirt after taste, but it's good.... ahh.
    Backpacking provides those Instagram- my life is better than yours moments. But those are what we endure the hardships for. And what people sitting on their couch are missing.

    Knowing that you had to take your tripod, set it up in all of those spots, and then go back and walk by ALL of those times is sooooo inspiring. You are a filmmaker in the truest sense of the word. Don’t have a camera guy, or a camera crew and people editing your footage, but instead you do it all and I am so proud of you for it. I really really wish you the best and look forward to seeing your channel continue to grow organically. Thankyou for being who you are. You’re a breath of fresh air😃✌🏽

    Nice video Christine. Stay safe out there, the heat can definitely be dangerous, especially on medium or long hikes. In the scene where you were unloading your pack I envisioned a clown car in my head when you kept pulling stuff out of the pack and more and more stuff kept piling out. I was just in Arches and Canyonlands in late October when the weather was cooler. Beautiful place although I didn't venture into the needles district this time around.

    I like the capturing of the landscapes and the hiking through various terrains in the video. I think it is a nice and effective approach to the natural sounds of hiking that you chose to go with. Personally I think the “NATS” sound is a little loud perhaps tune it down a little? Great video as always and thanks for the inspiration! Looking forward to your next video!

    Spectacular area. Thank You for taking us there. 🙏🏼💕. Yes, I like the judicious use of music, letting the scenery speak for itself. And, as others have said maybe turn down the volume of the footsteps just a tad. 🙂. I actually love hearing the sound of footsteps on the trail, but you have a wonderfully sensitive mic. 😊. Love all your videos! Thanks for the opportunity to share a little bit of feedback. ( I edit audiobooks so sound quality always gets my attention. 😉)

    I like mixing the talking throughout, but it was a good video. I think that’s my favourite park we have been to. We front country camped and then hiked the joint trail as a loop from the elephant canyon trailhead. It was awesome! We didn’t make it to Druid arch. I’d like to backpack in there someday. But probably in the fall or spring. Busier probably but not so hot.

    Aah, back to rock country. As beautiful as the high mountains with their snow packs and forests are, there is nothing more beautiful than the stark deserts and basins with their exposed towering red and blonde pinnacles. The scenes you captured certainly held my attention. I kept looking for hidden cracks and narrow passages and it was all there. The narrative was provided by the way you edited and presented the hike. I think your style is unique and it works.

    I've hiked most of those canyons and that is an awesome area to hike. 11 miles out to Druid and back is a significant hike, especially in the heat, even as a day hike with lighter pack. I enjoyed the real sounds and having the conversation at the end. I also appreciate that you explain why you rated it “difficult.” The ratings can be moderate or difficult for so many reasons...some of those reasons aren’t hard for some but are for others. My partner finds ledges difficult while I find going down boulders is more of a challenge. So it’s nice knowing the “why” behind the label.

    Of course, this video held my attention! I like that you have let the natural sounds shine - sometimes it is hard to find the right music, so letting nature provide the mix is awesome. I've been remaking some of my videos and ditching the music where I can, but the audio on my old stuff is pretty awful. LOL!
    Question: what would you have done if that bottle rolled back to you after coaxing it?
    AND...Is that a new backpack? Looks like the HMG Southwest...3400? I have the same pack and LOVE it! But I do struggle with where to put my gear where it is more accessible. I guess I need to leave some of the camera gear behind!
    PS - loved the night photos!❤️

    • @nomad_unknown
      @nomad_unknown  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Maryann! Audio is so challenging to deal with. I spend way more time and energy on audio than the visual and often it goes unnoticed (which I think is the goal).
      The bottle did roll back! It just hesitated at first. Haha! The camera didn't capture it well but I was truly shocked because it rolled up a pretty steep little dip.
      Yes, new pack. My next video will get into all the details of why I now have this pack. :)

    Very nice, Christine. When I got back to the campground after my hike to Druid Arch and asked a neighbor if she had seen it, she said "I think that Druid Arch is a 'portal'." Now, that provided some food for thought. Good choice of locations to hike, no?

    • @nomad_unknown
      @nomad_unknown  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! I don't know about portal but it was so hot when I was hiking there that I kept imaging that I was actually hiking to a waterfall with a swimming hole. A little mirage in my mind!

      @@nomad_unknown Just one question: As you were hiking up canyon - maybe in the vicinity of where you actually climb up out of the canyon bottom and then walk parallel to the bottom on a slightly upper level - is there still a fresh water source that sits in the shade on the right side of the canyon, shaded by a long overhand? I saw it maybe 4 years ago.

    loved the video aspects, nice use of light and I like the longer shots. But to much walking sound, more of the nature sounds would be great even if its just wind. Great video packed with amazing shots! Some friendly feedback.... the audio sounds very processed like there is a significant amount of noise reduction. I would reduce that (no pun intended ha!) also the footsteps being loud when you’re walking away from camera, I assume from using the lav as the audio source. I would use a shotgun on the camera instead. Also it would be great to see more of you’re smiling face and some reactions.😁 Your shot composition is really nice and your videos are captivating. Awesome locations! Keep them coming please!

    • @nomad_unknown
      @nomad_unknown  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback Mike. Regarding the "sound distortion" believe it or not that is the actual sound of my shoe soles hitting the slick rock. It's very strange and seems way louder than it should be but the rock is so porous that it has that strange hollow sound that echos in the canyon. I think my shotgun mic would have been better suited in the case but I didn't have the experience of the ambient noise yet to anticipate. Live and learn.

    But in general I like the style with less talking. A little bit of Joey Coconato style.
    And the needles is such an awesome area. It's on top of my list when I can travle to the US again...

    Erik Normark is the guy’s name. Check out his channel. He has a video that shows you how to capture nature sounds. He shows you what to buy as far as sound equipment. I would Watch every single one of his videos if he would just speak a little bit. If you can master his sound capturing techniques your channel will blow up. He is a master at capturing sound. I hope this helps you. 👍

      Thanks for the feedback. :) The echoes in the canyon and strange sound of footstep on the porous rock maybe wasn't the best time to try this video as my set up generally works for these purposes in other environments.

    You could improve the sound. It was quite distracting. Personally I would enjoy the music over hearing the footsteps, eating and breathing.

      I disagree. I like hearing the sounds of hiking more than music. The combo of the two is good... but the hiking etc was a bit loud. Maybe keep those sounds but make them quieter?

    As usual your landscape photography was exemplary, almost as if the viewer was brought into the scene. Prefer your narrating throughout the video, esp. since you have a very pleasing and engaging voice, and vocal style. Still doesn't hurt to try new things, but hard to improve upon near perfection.

    Beautiful, intriguing place. I must go and I explore it. Music seemed to be about right. You always use music I enjoy and enhances the video. Some hikers use music that ruins the video and it's best to turn off the sound. Hearing swallowing water and chewing food though is not the best.

    Your three ideas are great ideas BUT . . . from someone that's also a hiker it does not sound natural where you put the microphone that's picking up the sound of your feet but not the sound of nature around you much. It's just too sensitive to the noise you are making from walking. I think it would be better if you had a quality mic not too far from the camera. I say this assuming you are wearing a mic because it does not change volume as you get closer to or further from the camera. It almost sounds like you are wearing wooden shoes. But the video and music mixing is great. Much better than I have ever taken the time to do even though I do know how to do it.

    Because you asked for feedback about the recording of sound I willl give you my honest opinion. I noticed that something was different right from the beginning. I don’t know where you had your mike but it sounded terrible. Like your shoes where filled with water as you walked. I just heard this sloshing back-and-forth. Very annoying. I also Believe that you should talk some throughout the video just so we know how you feel about your surroundings at times. I agree with you too much talking is not good but no talking is also not good. My advice since you asked is I think you should be yourself. I think your aunt Catherine will agree with me. You need to be yourself so it will come across as genuine not phony. That is why I watch your channel to see you being yourself. If you want to talk a little less it’s OK if you think it will give you more views but member you have to be yourself. I really liked at the end how you gave information about that area to anyone that was interested in going there. So #1 you have to put your mike a few feet away from your body #2 you have to do a little more talking throughout the video. Doesn’t have to be a lot. #3 just be yourself and don’t worry about what people think. That’s probably the most important one. As for music I don’t really care too much about that. There is plenty of sounds out there when we are hiking that you can record after your shot and then addd it to the shot later. What I mean is stand there after your shot and record some sound for a minute. then add it in post production later. There is this guy that I follow that is very good at that catching sound from his surroundings. The reason I don’t watch his channel all the time it’s because he does no talking and I don’t like that. I’llTry and find you his channel and give you his name.

      I appreciate the time you spent on the feedback. I was trying something new but that doesn't mean I'm not being myself. It is a process of learning to experiment and take risks. I'm not the kind of person to find a "formula" and stick with that and let that define me. Part of being me is that I'm not afraid to take risks.
      I've been watching Erik Normark's videos for years and they are some of my favorites. I've been very inspired by what he does with sound. He is very talented.

    Utah Jeff ..... here .... actually the video was OK ... however, when you talk you are putting your personality into it and it is much more personal to the watcher... I imagine it is a lot more work to do that for you and your crew .....a lot of UTubers do something similar

    • @nomad_unknown
      @nomad_unknown  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not any more work for me (no crew) but I was experimenting with a different model of storytelling. I think I was a little off the mark.
