you have to remember this adventure is also an experiement from WotC. Many Dms like to have setting book explaining how the setting work. But book like Sword Coast Adventure Guide have poor sell. So they tried to merge a setting book with an adventure book, giving you Out of the Abyss which show case the under dark setting amoung an adventure which resulted in much better sells.
Believe it or not this was my very first campaign I ever DMed. Funnily enough that was also one of my biggest DMing mistakes hahaha. I would love to go back to this module with my skills/knowledge now and give it another go!
This was a fantastic, informative and fun breakdown of a module I haven't really looked at in the past, and there's a lot more good here then I've picked up from secondhand comments on it. Heck, I might even feel like running it one day now, since I'll be able to identify the faults quicker and easier and patch them ahead of time.
I'm glad you found it helpful! Out of the abyss is a module that doesn't benefit from reading it all before running it, it's a module that absolutely needs it. The more preparation and knowledge you have the better this campaign will be. Hopefully knowing its shortfalls will make a huge difference when you decide to run it. I know it gets a lot of well deserved hate but it has some amazing stuff in there if people can work around its flaws.
Great Video! Videos like this help me understand and digust the modules better! I would love to see you make other ones, maybe on waterdeep dragon heist or even curse of strahd
Im so glad to hear this helped! Curse of strahd was actually next on my list! But these videos take a while to make so it might be a while before its released. In the meantime I know that @flutesloot has a LOT of curse of strahd content that helped me when I started out with the book!
This one is the fourth module I've played in, and honestly it's my favourite. We use a lot of the travel time to roleplay, we walk and talk lol. I also operate as DM support for this one, giving a hand with admin and bouncing ideas back and forth. We're in chapter two at the moment (I was a viewer who skipped to best and worst lol) and we're having a really good time!
Haha ok good I was worried you spoiled it for yourself! The campaign definitley has its flaws but I really enjoyed it. Glad to hear others really enjoy it as well! It has such a mixed reaction online lol.
Considering I just escaped the Underdark, we decided not to continue into part 2. We spent a year and a half, and it was tedious. I’m sure our DM didn’t help himself, because he decided to combine this campaign with a different one, making things convoluted and confusing. The pacing was rough, and it just seemed like we were always running away, witnessing the genocide of a culture. Our DM was also played his NPCs as extremely aggressive and hostile towards at all times. So although I was a charisma character, I didn’t want to talk to anyone. We also kept getting piled on with tasks and never solving anything. It was frustrating, to say the least. I will say, there were some real highs though (though it’s hard for me to know what is the Abyss and what was the other campaign), the oozy temple was fun! The Society of Brilliance and Grazillax was awesome, the Darrow and our investigations into Buppido and the cave system was great and challenging. The Neverlight Grove was both enchanting and terrifying, though I loved that little investigation portion talking to the different circles. Hard words to say (Yggmorgus, Loobamub, Yesterbrod etc) but fun nonetheless. This was a great video!
Yea! You prety much names 90% of the main issues people talk about with the campaign. Its a bummer that you arent continuning because the 2nd half is where you stop running "away" and start running "into" the danger more prepared, Everything you mentioned at least in this comment is from the module. I didnt do too much in Graklestug but I realllllly enjoyed the neverlight grove as well! Thanks you very much :D
Thank you for the video! I just found your channel, and this video easily convinced me to subscribe! I would have preferred a bit more focus in the video regarding what's good and not in the story. It definitely was there, but I just felt a tad more focus on it would have been helpful to me personally. Now, it seems to focus more on an overview of the story. Anyway, looking forward to diving deeper into your channel!
Great summary! I also have a love hate relationship with this one. It is complicated to get the players to understand all the NPCs and their motives etc. On the other hand, I love the amount of role-playing and negotiating that can occur; especially in Gracklestugh. As for the wilderness sections, I definitely will be adding puzzles and challenges to spice it up such as traversing boiling pools of mud, decaying rope bridges over deep chasms, and the pursuing drow hot on their heels perhaps catching up with the party in a dramatic setting. Not a big fan of random encounters so this will require a lot of homebrew style DMing.
Thanks so much! Its funny becuase I really enjoyed certain aspects of the module and absolutley hated others. But it has soem incredible high notes that I just cannot ignore. I really think its a great exercise in DMing to be able to pick up this book and felx your muscles with your improve/homebrew ideas!
Love the breakdown! As a player, had a rough time with this campaign as I felt uninformed and just lost without any details of the underdark (didn't help being relatively new to dnd) and not having any real idea of what the story was about or for. Ok, so we escape prison and there's a giant demon dreamt into existence. Keep running. To what end? Watching this breakdown makes me want to buy the book so that I could run it for others better than it was presented to me. Sounds like it would be awesome fun! ...Just rework the ending a bit...
Thanks! I'm super glad you enjoyed! Sorry to hear your first experience with it wasnt the best. It is definitley not a module for newer players or inexperienced DMs. If you want a realy exercise in felexing your DMing skills, Out of the Abyss leaves a lot of opportunity for you to do just that!
The adventure definitely has its problems but I rarely find one that doesn't. At the end of the day it always comes down to the Dm and their ability to work with what's given to them. It might be a lot of work but I really do find OOTA quite compelling, it's just needs a good dm to make it fantastic!
Amazing video. Hey, can u do tomb of Annihilation im doing out of Abyss, but I want to do the tomb of anighlation next in the future. thx :) also having fun in the out of abyss and yea had to change rules for travel to make it more fun for the players i do want to see later if i can find a way to make more open wrold but dont know how if u have any tips for that ill love to know thx
Im working my way through Tomb of Annihilation now but these videos take a long time to script. I cant promise it will be out soon but I am working on it!
As for travel, my honest best suggestion is dont be afraid to "skip" significant portions of travel. I really like using those created dungeons in there as "encounters" through their travel and maybe a social encounter with a couple of the NPCs listed in the book. Maybe play up the whole spore issue with sarith, or maybe they cross paths with the society of brilliance. Honestly though, it can be very difficutl to make travel not slog which is why I heavily suggest only a couple of encounters per "travel segment". Sorry I dont have anything better >< Hope this helps!
@ThisCrits oh nice really liked the way u did the video and yeah dont worry I have whole time before I finished out of abyss so im down to wait long time :)
@ThisCrits no yeah I started doing exactly that there already met a society of brilliance and already met an important npc so I can't wait too see how the story ends
Your appreciation of Glabagool signals to me that you absolutely know what you're talking about with this adventure.
Glababool is the adventure!

Having all them NPCs in the party made combat EXTREMELY hard to do as a new Game Master way back when I tried to do this thing.
Believe it or not this was my very first campaign I ever DMed. Funnily enough that was also one of my biggest DMing mistakes hahaha. I would love to go back to this module with my skills/knowledge now and give it another go!
Great review. I always wanted to run this one and heard a few reviews on it. Yours by far is the best I have heard to date. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! I'm really glad to hear you got some value out of it! Good luck with the game!

Thanks so much! I realized halfway through editing it was a bit too focused on the story but it just means I know how to make the next one better :D

Ill be running Out of the Abyss for my players and im definitely implementing some changes, starting with the number of prisoner NPC's xD
Hahha I do not blame you XD
Love the breakdown!

I love this adventure, but what it is missing is a good Act II to bridge Act 1and 3. Chapter 7, 8, and 9 do not make a good bridge between the two.
100000% The adventure is really cool but is SEVERLEY lacking any connective tissue to bind the "acts" together.
Nice breakdown. Never played. Not sure if I will get around to it
If you ever get the chance you should take it! It definitley has its flaws but it can really be a great campaign.
The last review of OOTA turned me off it pretty hard. Otoh, this one kinda has me all in.

Do you have any comment on the rumors that you yourself came out of the abyss?? I think the public has a right to know.
