  • In this video I go over the lore of the Abyss, the chaotic evil plane that demons are from. I also cover the differences (changes/discrepancies/retcons/etc.) it has undergone through all 5 editions of Dungeons & Dragons, so that you can pick and choose which variations of lore you like the best and want to implement in your game.

    It might interest you to know Pazuzu does appear in a 5E book, but one for charity (Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy), page 103. His art is pretty cool and I'll quote some of the lore below:
    "Pazuzu is a powerful demon lord, one of the eldest and most reprehensible of his ilk. He is also called the Dark Angel of the Four Winds, and the Prince of the Lower Aerial Kingdoms. He holds sway over all evil flying creatures, even among the different layers of the Abyss.
    Pazuzu's home is the first layer of the Abyss, called Pazunia, known as the Plain of Infinite Portals or the Palace of 1,001 Closets. It is a harsh place with many pits and chasms marring its surface. The pits are portals that not only lead to all of the planes of the Abyss, but to other planes of existence and even mortal worlds. Only Pazuzu knows where each leads.
    Unlike most demon lords, Pazuzu is not interested in the conquest of the Abyss. His passion is for corruption. He is fond of corrupting mortals, especially the innocent and honest. Some believe that Pazuzu is the entity responsible for the ultimate corruption-that of the angel Asmodeus.
    Pazuzu is often credited with bringing the Blood War between Demons and Devils to fruition. Some believe he was capable of this as he is the only demon lord who has good relations with the Archdevils of Hell. Strangely, the demon lord that hates Pazuzu the most is Grazz't, supposedly a Lord of Hell before becoming an Abyssal Lord.
    When he visits the mortal world, Pazuzu often uses the names Pazrael, Imdugud, or Typhon. Whichever name he uses, he passes himself off in the guise of a benevolent entity that grants protections against pestilence and blesses childbirth. Those who use his protections are corrupted into committing vile acts, and children blessed by him are cursed to grow up with evil in their hearts.
    The first and most ancient demon lord. He has been trapped in an iron flask and must be kept imprisoned until a way is found to destroy him."
    The book seems a bit rushed at times, Pazuzu has a greatsword in his statblock but what looks like a spear in his art. I've seen a few errors in the text and the art for Jaheira (while high quality) makes her way too young and looks nothing like any other appearance. But, honestly, that's nitpicking a charity book that's pretty substantial.
    From flipping through it, it has a lot of neat suff for Forgotten Realms and Baldur's Gate lore as well as rules for running many major organizations. It seems like a pretty good book, especially for a homebrew campaing or if you just want some cool villains and allied NPC's, organizations and potential rewards from them, to add to official adventures.
    Probably well worth giving $15 to charity for it, at least what I can tell from skimming through it. 🤔

      I have the hard cover of that book! It’s a fantastic source however I don’t think it’s technically considered canon so that’s why I didn’t mention it. It’s in a weird state where it’s technically a WOTC product, but it’s not made by their team and it’s only for purchase on DMsGuild.

    • @probablythedm1669
      @probablythedm1669 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Genghis_Sean it seems to be in the same kind of "canon" status as many other non 5E sources (like the videogames or anything pre 5E):
      *It's canon only in so far as it does not conflict with mainline products.* 🤣
      I get it. It makes making products easier and onboarding new players easier, even if some things are lost when you play lose with the canon.

    I would love a breakdown of may of the abyss plains, but one I would Definity request is Lolth's demonweb pits. I am making a homebrew evil campaign for a full Drow group and knowing some of that lore would be massively both cool and helpful.

    Nentir Vale (4E's default setting) and Forgotten Realms are different settings. In Nentir Vale, the Abyss was formed when Tharizdun planted the seed of evil in the Elemental Chaos, whereas in Forgotten Realms, the Abyss was a plane on the World Tree, before Asmodeus grabbed it and chucked it into the Elemental Chaos.

    • @Genghis_Sean
      @Genghis_Sean  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nentir Vale is a different setting but it still exists within the D&D multiverse, so their cosmologies are the same. The Abyss of the Forgotten Realms is the same as the Abyss of Nentir Vale, since it exists separate from the material plane.

    • @rpghorrorstories
      @rpghorrorstories 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Genghis_Sean I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. Different Crystal Spheres have different cosmological setups, even if there's overlap in how they play out. Another example on how things are different is Bane. Bane in a god in both settings, but in one he was a mortal who was granted his power by Jergal when the latter got bored of his job, while the other was always a god.

    • @Genghis_Sean
      @Genghis_Sean  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rpghorrorstories the setting where Bane was always a god could have formed after FR, or different spheres have different origin stories but who knows which is true. All I know is that the Forgotten Realms sources acknowledge the world axis cosmology, since the spellplague is what caused the cosmology to shift in the first place.

    Hey Sean, you're great! PLEASE do lore for individual Abyssal Layers!!! There is so much material and no one talks about it. They have the standard information in the standard releases, but in Dragon Magazine/Dungeon Magazine they have tons of articles on particular Abyssal Planes, and then there's the adventures where you have to *go to them* so there is TONS OF INFO THERE, WHY DOES NO ONE MAKE THESE VIDEOS??

    • @Genghis_Sean
      @Genghis_Sean  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’ll be sure to do more Abyssal layers in the future. Are there any specific Dragon articles or adventurers that cover layers of the Abyss? I haven’t found any yet but I know they exist. I found quite a few for the 9 Hells.

      Right now, Codex of the Infinite Planes is free on drivethrurpg
      Pages 147-150 discuss individual layers. I know you already did the Plane of Infinite Portals, but there are cities on it that are discussed there, and you even visit one in Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2, it's called Broken Reach.
      The message that has been deleted twice links to oocities/Athens/7117/planes/abyss/layers
      I will tell you A LOT more as I am more than happy to go through the magazines on annarchive/dungeon annarchive is commercial and cities is an organization, both end in hyper text markup language

    • @ericep7117
      @ericep7117 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Genghis_Sean there's lots of info but you would have to compile it all together. For instance Dungeon 184 features an enchanted bone that appears from the Abyss, Thanatos - Orcus' realm. But it's about his exarch Doresain (who gets mentioned from time to time) and his area, White Kingdom, that he rules within Thanatos.
      Like that is Kalis plane, 500 from the 2e "Tales From The Outer Planes". The 2e "Planes Of Chaos" book has quite a few layers discussed, there's more of Orcus' again, layer 113, and Naratyr, a city of Kiaranslee's, which has a tavern in the lower section.
      Graz'zt 3 layers are talked about.
      Fyi, if I were going to do a video, I might do it on Orcus' layer, but I'd wait to do it even though there's enough info here, just because I know there is a lot more readily available. The-eye.eu has a ton of dragon and dungeon magazines for free

    Of course it'd be madness to expect Sean to talk about all the layers of the INFINTE Abyss, nor even the ones that are known.
    But I honestly wait for him to cover the ones ruled by the Demon Lords, not only Demogorgon, Orcus, Yeenoghu, Baphomet and the likes, but also Lolth, Pazuzu and Obox-Ob for example.
