Very cool video Paddy, khao san isnt my favorite part of bkk, way to much noise being thrown at you from everyone direction but the Blues bar looked right up my street, great job
It's been really funny listening to your first adventure in BKK. I was 22 when I first flew in Thailand with a couple of friends back in 1991, Khao San road was really a quite a relaxed place, not the circus you see nowadys. But scams were already common, I remember we tried three times with different tuk tuk drivers to be brought to Wat Pho with no success: each driver purposely drove us to Pat Pong pretending to misinterpret our pronunciation. Exhausted eventually we moved there by foot.
After your initial recommendation, I visit Hi-So everytime i'm in Bangkok and take everyone who comes to bkk there too. The crab meat curry is amazing.
Great video, Paddy! I'm not really fond of Khaosan Road, way too noisy for me. But the parallel street , Thanon Ram Buttri is great, much more authentic. And in this street is the place where I've eaten the best curry I've ever had in Bangkok, Tossakan Thai Curry House.

I didn't mind Khao San. Last year I spent a few nights at the Khao San Palace. I was working nights though on US time and needed a spot to keep busy at night while on my breaks.
I'm an older Millennial, been to Bangkok 6 times since the early 2000's and not once have I been to Khao San Road. I've been close for sure and the first few times I was definitely a backpacker. It's not like I avoided it because of the reputation (I've been to 2 full moon parties just to see), like how people avoid Cancun proper or Kuta due to the drunken mess of 18 yo's. It just never happened and I feel I missed a part of that Bangkok experience, especially in ~2002 when I first came and even 2006. Before social media took off. Now, in 2024 I spent 6 weeks in Thailand and I just didn't want to go, I feel it would be a let down, my mind would still think it would be that chaotic place 22 years ago that friends described. Like when I went to Vang Vieng that same year, when they rented me a full-ass Harley in Phonsavan in 2006, all the sketch dirt roads in Koh Tao with tourist accidents happening hourly. I think the older timers than me think the same about the 90s, the 80's and the real original Westerners that went in the 70's to surf all these places and explore jungles with a real sense of danger in many of these places.
I hear you Paddy Doyle. I enjoyed your episode on buying leasing in BKK. Day 1 in Bangkok was around 2002 with my girlfriend after being in Shanghai. I hated it. I did not get scammed like you but I wasn't into it. 20 years later I have live there for months. have great positive friends and look forward to trip 8
I love this, never knew it. Been to Bkk many many times, best place in the world for me.I am coming again for a month in febr., i would like to rent a condo now instead of a hotel, is that dutch friend of yours also doing short term rentals?
Hi Paddy, William from South Africa. Going to Bangkok in December and looking for an area to stay. Want a place that is interesting but not too crazy or hectic, would you recommend Siam ?
Great video, thanks. We have been trying to work out what the tattoo on your forearm is, we have even paused videos, taken a picture and google searched, no luck lol. Please solve our mystery. Cheers
Get lost in PatPong the second day ,1997, at the first trip to Bkk. Not funny. Love Bkk since then. BangRak. 18 trips now. Thanks for very fine clips !
I had a really bad day when I landed in Ho Chi Minh on my first ever solo trip far away from home. I had been to Australia, but it's pretty much the same as home (New Zealand) It was so busy, I couldn't cross the road, I stepped into the street and straight onto a bag full of liquid that sprayed up my legs and hit some ladies seated on the side of the road eating, I apologized profusely and when she saw what it was that I stood on (soup) she waved it away and accepted my apology, I continued walking to where my tour was going from and had a panic attack. I had to duck into a cafe to calm down, but for some reason, I ordered a black coffee 😂 I can confirm that coffee is not good when you're having a panic attack. I finally got up the courage to leave the cafe, started walking to the tour operator, and started finding locals to cross the road with. The whole time I was walking there, I felt like crying. I felt like I made a huge mistake, and I just wanted to go home. I made it in the end, and the tour was amazing! I went to the Cu Chi tunnels, met a lovely Australian family, and spent the day with them. The mum and I talked nonstop all the way back on the bus. The next morning, I woke up, and all the bullshit was forgotten. All I could think about was what an amazing day I had. The rest of my six week trip was epic! I got the hang of crossing the roads and settled in to life in South East Asia. It was such a formative trip for me, I learned so much about myself, and it just increased my desire to travel. To anyone who struggles when traveling alone, it's all going to be OK. Look after yourself, breathe, and do the thing because I promise you won't regret it ❤
Fine, compassionate introduction (about 7 minutes) as a world-travel virgin! I apologize for a grump, recent comment that I made --- stating that I had overdosed on your Bangkok City vlogs --- suggesting you revisit Vietnam (go south to north this time!), Laos, where you lost your wallet, and to hangout with Cowboy again in Siem Reap.
I remember walking in Khao San Road at the end of the pandemic just before Songkran . The street was completely empty, zero tourists. Then just a few months later during what is supposed to be low season and still a time with not so many tourists Khao San road was so packed you couldn’t even walk there

I had been to Australia, but it's pretty much the same as home (New Zealand)
It was so busy, I couldn't cross the road, I stepped into the street and straight onto a bag full of liquid that sprayed up my legs and hit some ladies seated on the side of the road eating, I apologized profusely and when she saw what it was that I stood on (soup) she waved it away and accepted my apology, I continued walking to where my tour was going from and had a panic attack.
Look after yourself, breathe, and do the thing because I promise you won't regret it ❤
thanks for sharing :)
BKK Pat is the best! Love this area of Bangkok (minus Khao San Rd.).
Hoi Paddy i like your video’s,can you please tell me the name of the hotel you stay in koh San road thnx Marcel from holland
Sawadeeeeekap!
Thanon Ram Buttri is one of the best streets to walk down in Bangkok. It is quite memorable and very pleasant.
Thanks again paddy
I remember walking in Khao San Road at the end of the pandemic just before Songkran . The street was completely empty, zero tourists. Then just a few months later during what is supposed to be low season and still a time with not so many tourists Khao San road was so packed you couldn’t even walk there
Completed when paddy meet pat
