Love this video mate. The joy of finding those little pockets of culture and local places really stimulates my curiosity and wander lust. If I am not mistaken not far from the Swing is the corner where RedBull was concocted and made it's debut by a guy who sold it in the mornings to people off to work. If I recall, Chris P was with Bangkok Pat and that was one of their spots to talk about. It is so hard not to find oneself in a beautiful and inspiring place almost anywhere in Thailand. Thanks so much as always for a wonderful appetizer. And, speaking of food I'm asking my local Thai chef if they can make that beef dish for me. It looked amazing. There is a similar Viet soup I can get locally with that melty delicious boiled beef. Darn, now I'm hungry and got to go! My best to Miss P Paddy.

Khao San road( the area) is way better than it used to be- first visit late 90s. Now it is so much more- the area includes areas all the way to the river. Cleaned up a lot- the streets/ food/ places to stay. I brought my teenagers in May- show them where dad started his first visit. I was thinking maybe a night or so- not much to it. I was very wrong- could easily spend 3-4 days enjoying the area. It has become so much more in a positive way.

I miss the times when u could meet backpackers and other people and share experiences and make friends.. smartphones and socialmedia has effectually taken away all that human and irl social interaction.

Remember me as a 18-19 yr old backpacker 1994-95...traveling to Thailand ALONE with a old thai translation and a outdated guide book and paper maps..
It was a adventure into the unknown really not knowing anything, and i did meet A LOT of backpackers from all over the world and exchanged experiences and being social.
Today well traveling has lost most of the adventure.
Just watch a youtube och tiktok video or google search..and u know what to do and where to go.

Which isn't a terribly bad thing, especially for people like me who are planning their first trip. Unfortunately, most people want easy-to-consume material, and that includes travel itineraries now, and destinations that don't stray from their expectations/culture back home. Travelling is definitely not for relaxing, in my opinion, lol.

Only partially true. It's just that you need to widen your horizon and travel further deep into countries. I started again travelling after 20 years of idle and boring family/work life just renting a bike and drive it mainly offroad with huge pleasure. I admit I got my inspirations from Paddy's trips , I mean when he was still on the adventure side and not a posh "cash cow" influencer focus on luxury condos :) and during my last (unfortunately too short) three trips I really enjoyed back my youth vibes and experiences. Northern Vietnam and northern Laos are still amazing, cheap and without hordes of fussy turists, try for example Muang Ngoi or Cao Bang. Atlas mountains and desert in Morocco were a blast as well, but you need to choose carefully where to stop. But of course roaming the once peaceful now overcrowded target of Puket/Samui/Phangan/Khao San Road/Bali...can only lead to disappointment.

It's been really funny listening to your first adventure in BKK. I was 22 when I first flew in Thailand with a couple of friends back in 1991, Khao San road was really a quite a relaxed place, not the circus you see nowadys. But scams were already common, I remember we tried three times with different tuk tuk drivers to be brought to Wat Pho with no success: each driver purposely drove us to Pat Pong pretending to misinterpret our pronunciation. Exhausted eventually we moved there by foot.

I'm an older Millennial, been to Bangkok 6 times since the early 2000's and not once have I been to Khao San Road. I've been close for sure and the first few times I was definitely a backpacker. It's not like I avoided it because of the reputation (I've been to 2 full moon parties just to see), like how people avoid Cancun proper or Kuta due to the drunken mess of 18 yo's. It just never happened and I feel I missed a part of that Bangkok experience, especially in ~2002 when I first came and even 2006. Before social media took off.
Now, in 2024 I spent 6 weeks in Thailand and I just didn't want to go, I feel it would be a let down, my mind would still think it would be that chaotic place 22 years ago that friends described. Like when I went to Vang Vieng that same year, when they rented me a full-ass Harley in Phonsavan in 2006, all the sketch dirt roads in Koh Tao with tourist accidents happening hourly. I think the older timers than me think the same about the 90s, the 80's and the real original Westerners that went in the 70's to surf all these places and explore jungles with a real sense of danger in many of these places.

Hi Paddy, William from South Africa. Going to Bangkok in December and looking for an area to stay. Want a place that is interesting but not too crazy or hectic, would you recommend Siam ?

Great video, thanks. We have been trying to work out what the tattoo on your forearm is, we have even paused videos, taken a picture and google searched, no luck lol. Please solve our mystery.
    Cheers

I had a really bad day when I landed in Ho Chi Minh on my first ever solo trip far away from home. I had been to Australia, but it's pretty much the same as home (New Zealand)
It was so busy, I couldn't cross the road, I stepped into the street and straight onto a bag full of liquid that sprayed up my legs and hit some ladies seated on the side of the road eating, I apologized profusely and when she saw what it was that I stood on (soup) she waved it away and accepted my apology, I continued walking to where my tour was going from and had a panic attack. I had to duck into a cafe to calm down, but for some reason, I ordered a black coffee 😂 I can confirm that coffee is not good when you're having a panic attack.
I finally got up the courage to leave the cafe, started walking to the tour operator, and started finding locals to cross the road with. The whole time I was walking there, I felt like crying. I felt like I made a huge mistake, and I just wanted to go home.
I made it in the end, and the tour was amazing! I went to the Cu Chi tunnels, met a lovely Australian family, and spent the day with them. The mum and I talked nonstop all the way back on the bus.
The next morning, I woke up, and all the bullshit was forgotten. All I could think about was what an amazing day I had.
The rest of my six week trip was epic! I got the hang of crossing the roads and settled in to life in South East Asia. It was such a formative trip for me, I learned so much about myself, and it just increased my desire to travel.
To anyone who struggles when traveling alone, it's all going to be OK. Look after yourself, breathe, and do the thing because I promise you won't regret it ❤

Fine, compassionate introduction (about 7 minutes) as a world-travel virgin!
I apologize for a grump, recent comment that I made --- stating that I had overdosed on your Bangkok City vlogs --- suggesting you revisit Vietnam (go south to north this time!), Laos, where you lost your wallet, and to hangout with Cowboy again in Siem Reap.

Thanon Ram Buttri is one of the best streets to walk down in Bangkok. It is quite memorable and very pleasant.

I remember walking in Khao San Road at the end of the pandemic just before Songkran . The street was completely empty, zero tourists. Then just a few months later during what is supposed to be low season and still a time with not so many tourists Khao San road was so packed you couldn’t even walk there
