  • The fabulous Manila Hotel is one of the great hotels in Asia. We are taken on a tour by the management and discover the rich background history of this iconic place. Royalty, Presidents, Movie Stars and Military Generals have all called the Manila Hotel home at some stage. The New York Times had an office there. Ernest Hemingway got drunk and the Japanese High Command got bombed. Even the Australians had a Consulate Office there at one stage. Finally, in the words of General Douglas MacArthur, "I shall return".

It's been ages since I've been there. My dear departed sister, God rest her soul, celebrated her 18th birthday at the Fiesta Pavilion right past the Lobby Lounge. Thank you for showing The Grand Dame. That's what the Manila Hotel was called back in the day.

In 1978, we had our honeymoon in this hotel. It looks quite different from what I can remember back then. In 1977, when we were building the Philippine Plaza Hotel as construction managers, (it is now known as Sofitel) in the reclaim area (where Cultural Center, Folk arts Center and the PICC buildings), the hotel was being remodeled. Of course it was construction, we kind of know what is going on on Imelda Marcos projects, there was an accident during remodeled. Can't remember the details from so long ago. The architects of this building was Locsin, also the architects of the Folk Arts Theater, Cultural Center and PICC.

You are going to love their buffet! Stay for at least one night if you can. Their rooms are a bit old (unless they renovated lately) but very bright and spacious. I recommend that you turn off the air con and open their big floor-to-ceiling windows. You'll forget that you are still in 21st century Manila.

Thanks for the tour of this grand historic hotel. I'm planning to stay there in a few weeks' time and also walk around the Intramuros area to see the Spanish forts. I've been living in the Philippines for 13 years, so it's about time I checked the Manila history which I find so fascinating. It's great that they found the WW2 Japanese shipwreck Montevideo Maru this week that had Australian POW's onboard. Good to pay respects for ANZAC day tomorrow 🍻

Marshall, there's no doubt about it - you were born to live in the lap of luxury! I can see in the gleam of your eyes that you have found your true nature - classy, exquisite and dare I say, glamorous. The 5 star hotels and resorts in the Philippines don't know it yet, but they should be calling you and offering you to stay with them or invite you to their buffet to hear your discerning and insightful feedbacks, with no non-sense honesty and Pinoy baiting. You're one of only few vloggers that when they say "how is this possible", they really just meant your "i enjoy this"! And please next time, let the Manila Hotel take you a photo inspecting the Heritage photos and get them to hang it up the wall! You are as a celebrity in our eyes! 😇

The Americans could have bypassed and just encircled Manila, took the rest the Philippines from the Japanese and would have spared a lot of Filipino lives and saved many historical structures from destruction but they opted to take it by force. Manila was second most destroyed city in WWII. I blame the Americans more than the Japanese for that.

I really wished that travel vloggers who come to the Philippines, and those travel vloggers who already are in the Philippines (especially the ones I follow) would do a dedicated historical travel vlog of at least 1 of many places in the Philippines that are great or important in history, but people, including Filipinos, haven't even heard of.
Anyway, I have to say that you're really good at this. You picked one of the most interesting places in the Philippines and probably the world. I'm pretty sure that there isn't any tv documentary about this hotel and it's history, let alone, a youtube vlog. Unfortunately but gladly or hopefully this is only PART 1 of this historical travel vlog, so you really really must return to this hotel.

The rooms are very plush, with an old school sort of Austin Powers vibe. I have an old souvenir book that shows all the famous stars that have stayed there in the past. There breakfast buffet is great I remember. I'll never stay anywhere else when visiting Manila! We could see the pier, and you could see the big passenger boats that arrived. Strolling around the surrounds were wonderful. I'll never stay anywhere else when visiting Manila! Thanks for sharing!

Visiting the Manila Hotel surely brought a lot of memories for the many occasions I've attended there. Most of the Rotary district conferences (2-3 days' event) were held there...the past 2 decades from my term as a Rotary Club President in 2002-2003. In between I've attended several wedding receptions there as well as birthday celebrations. In the late 70s to 80s, me and my group of friends watched and listened to live shows if famous musical bands which played there weekly. Stepping into the Manila Hotel gives me great pride as a Filipino due to the historical attributes and rich heritage this magnificent hotel stand for.

Definitely the next host of an upcoming show/vlog Life of the Rich and Famous in the Philippines!
Marshall, you're such a story teller who has exquisite vocabulary in describing an event and location. You made Robin Leach an inferior host. The variety of places you went to and foods that you tasted for us, are so well stratified. From the oddest street food and hidden restaurant of Binondo, the ritzy part of Makati and the GBC to the top establishments such as the Manila Hotel; you have both graced and humbled yourself in presenting the exquisite and mundane.
Thank you so much for creating a channel that I now subscribe with passion and interest. Thank you for having a show that a Filipino Canadian can appreciate without the hypocritical Filipino baiting that most foreign vloggers do.

So, you can tell the difference when it comes to Services (how to deal with customers / give service & etcetera ???)...Every time I remember it my stayed in this Hotel - it makes my blood goes up to my head because of DISGUST...Not a very nice one...So, we moved out that day straightaway....& moved to Makati Hotel (DUSIT THANI)....And, I'll never come back on this Hotel....I was humiliated & I WAS REALLY HURT.

Dude, are you angry? So many unnecessary caps and exclamation points. You do know if you capitalized all letters of a word then it means you are shouting at that part, right? If you had the time to identify which part to use caps lock, might as well check the spelling too while doing it!

My ancestors used to own the Manila Hotel. Yes, you guess it right...they were Spanish people living in the Philippines....my father, uncles, cousins, used to "work" there. Most of my relatives are now living in Spain and the USA. I would love to visit that place someday.

My Dad is from Urdaneta, Pangasinan. He joined the US Navy and he was living in the States raising his family. As a special treat, I purchased tickets for him and I to visit his homeland back in August 1978. We stayed at the Manila Hotel for 3 weeks during which I met dozens of relatives, including my Lola (grandmother) for the first time. This video brings back all those beautiful memories while staying at the fabulous Manila Hotel! I even survived my 1st Typhoon there! It's a cherished lifetime experience I shall never forget. 💖💖💖

Douglas MacArthur own home, he actually lived there for many years. I think it was named MacArthur suite now. It has a large photo of him on the wall. I've been there at the hotel as a young 11 years old in the 60's, getting prepared to come here to the U.S. (believe it or not I came by myself, first class.) I was taken care of by the plane crew.
