there's a line from one of the marcel the shell videos that always comes to mind, esp in the current cultural and political discussions which is at the heart of the genghis khan discussion - compared to what? we tend to compare our current situation to an ideal one. that leads to dissatisfaction. we're better off comparing it to how much worse it could be. then we can be happy and enjoy what we have know while we still work on making things even better.

I hope you actually still read the comments, because that´s a trait of people who actually care I think. You are a great guy Lex, like you have so much knowledge and positivity to share. As somebody who reads his comments, too, I can only say you made a good point for it when arguing with Joe. There is something to be gained from community interaction, be it humor, interesting thoughts or discussion and I would love to see things to improve in that direction further. I sometimes get negative comments, too, but also those same people sometimes return, like weeks or months later, to say that I actually changed their mind on things and to say sorry. Interaction leads to improvements, a lack of interaction and immediate feedback leads to stagnation I think.

I think he does read a lot of these comments but doesn't respond here, either because he's got twitter, instagram, etc & they're better platforms, &/or his morality is such that it wouldn't let him respond to one comment without responding to all of them. Or something like that

    • @lexfridman

Yes, I still read comments (in moderation). I appreciate all the love and thoughtful ideas shared. On days when I really have to focus on a difficult task, I don't read comments. I'm writing more and more scripts to help me, and deeply thinking about how the entire system can be improved. One of the reasons I want to read comments is to motivate me to give more power to the voices of the people who deeply care for others and have a longing to connect on genuine human level.

Hmm, I am afraid I fall in the other camp. I was driven to lex because of insights that I never get to hear from joe, because lex can ask second order questions because of his background, eg: like ones from Wolfram. While I do understand that ufo topic will get 10x the views, I am not sure lex should go towards populism because then he won't ask in depth questions because he is not specialized in that field

    • @pdsm1552
      @pdsm1552 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@PrashantMaurice As someone who got drawn to his podcast for very similar reasons to you- I have a slightly nuanced view of your point- I think Lex will ask nuanced in depth questions as much as he can. I personally loved this podcast as a JiuJitsu practitioner and competitor, having the opportunity to, for almost 4 hours, hear the thoughts of one of my "heroes" in the sport being interviewed by someone who gets it is an incredible opportunity.
I do undertstand the concern that the further Lex strays from his domain of expertise, the less he will be able to ask those poignant questions. However as a physicist, his podcasts with Penrose and Hutchinson give me hope that he can still ask very incisive and thought through questions even outside of his field of expertise.
At the end of the day, I enjoy Lex as an interviewer since he does his homework and has notes and gets questions from his audience too- so I should hope that translates to a slightly more populist approach to how the guests get chosen.

Ryan Hall's quote at the end of the interview. Not sure of the source, but wanted to write it down, as the words are very impactful.
Live your life so the fear of death can never enter your heart
Trouble no one about their religion, trouble no one about their view and demand that they respect yours.
Love your life, perfect your life and beautify all things in your life
Seek to make your life long and its purpose to the service of your people
Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.
Always give a word, sign or salute when meeting or passing by a friend, even a stranger when in a lonely place.
Show respect to all people and grovel to none.
When you arise in the morning, give thanks to the food and for the joy of living
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only within yourself.
Abuse no one or no thing, for abuse turns the wise one into fool and robs the spirit of its vision.
When it comes your time to die be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death so that when there time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way
Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Gotta give major respect to you, Lex, for even being willing to consider the topic of forgiveness for Hitler as a Jewish man. Really, that's pretty deep.
It makes me think perhaps I've held on to some resentment that I really should not hold onto. Obviously, it's easier said than done, but your point really does make me realize that I'm not dealing with issues nearly as deep as you might be. Thanks for being willing to lead that discussion by example instead of just saying an empty point and talking around it. I don't think many Jewish people would even be willing to talk about that Live for fear of castigation or being made fun of.
    Good stuff!

That along with the questions you ask your guest makes the awesome podcast that it is. It's been my experience that those who purposefully try to "bring you down" actually speak to themselves the same way.

That the only reason to ever parry or block was in order to deliver a killing blow. Know that your choice of words, the rhythm, the quite talk, the effort you put into selecting the right wording, and the ”slow” pace - are all perfect.
