Making Modern Flat Panel Cabinet Doors - Woodworking

  • I love the simple, clean look of these doors and think they are a perfect complement to the more complex frame and panel doors I used on the upper cabinets.
    While these doors and drawer fronts are considerably less complex than the frame and panel doors, getting them lined up perfectly for the correct look does take time. I spent much of a full day getting these drawer fronts installed and tweaking the fit.

      I really like them too John. Having done a few, can agree that any gap differences will be obvious from across the room. They just don't hide any 1/32" difference like the raised panel fronts do. Have you ever tried using drawer front adjusters, and then install handles after the fronts are on the drawers?

    The fact that the fake drawer is a different height to both the drawer on the left and right is triggering me.
    I can't help but think that John is the kinda guy that did that on purpose though for comments like this!

    Nice, I love this look. In our new house I asked the cabinet maker to do our kitchen like this and he said it would be impossible and that all cabinets had to have face frames for strength. So I built all my new shop cabinets like this and showed it too him. They came out perfectly and looked awesome. His face went completely red seeing that his customer was a better cabinet maker than he was! He then agreed to do the kitchen in frameless cabinets like these. The first cabinets he did had a 3/8" gap between drawers - unacceptable!!@!@ Finally, they came out the way I wanted them. He now advertises himself as an expert in modern frameless cabinets! BTW, the little edge band trimming tool takes a bit of practice to master, but when you do it really works great.

      What a disgrace he probably never built a cabinet before.. I’m surprised he show up so u can embarrass him. I’ve starting out with faceframe until I realize how much space it take up and cost of hardwood and making installing doors more tricky than no face frame.

    John, the tip about lining up the handle with the edge of the drawer then measuring the remaining portion of the drawer to get the handle spacing is one that may get overlooked by most, but it is gold! I have built so many cabinets over the years, worked in cabinet shops and installed 100's of kitchens, and that one never crossed my mind. I wish I would have known it when I was still doing it for a living!

    • @JohnHeisz
      @JohnHeisz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Did tons of installed too and for the residential kitchens they always sent them out without the handles installed or the holes drilled. It only took one mistake and the need for a replacement door (that I had to then go back and install) to teach me. Always use a guide if practical, and always double check before drilling :)

    • @thearcenist
      @thearcenist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Would like to second this. I've been an engineer for for nearly 10 years and had never come across this measurement trick. Thank you for sharing it!

    • @christopherortiz8713
      @christopherortiz8713 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you explain that in more detail about measuring from edge of drawer to get position of placement of handle.. thank you

    • @citicolina
      @citicolina 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Christopher Ortiz for example if the door is 26” and the distance between centres for the handle is 8”, when you measure like he did from one end minus the handle you’d get 26 - 8 = 18”, then do 18/2 = 9” and that’s the distance from each edge of the door to the centre of each hole for the handle. (Clear as mud? 😬 )

    • @seventries
      @seventries 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@christopherortiz8713 think of it like this. If the drawer width is 20 and the handle is 5, you want the perfect placement of the handle which when centered would be 7.5 on either side plus 5 in the middle for the handle (7.5+5+7.5 =20). The measuring trick does this by rearranging the numbers to 5 + 15 = 20 and you do this by placing the handle (5) on the edge and measuring the rest (15). Them split the 15 to get the 7.5 on the end without thinking about it and put the end of the handle (5) there for the perfect placement you want to achieve.

  • @ekw555

    @7:30 I am confused. the drawer fronts are "wrong side out"?
    could they not be turned around? I guess I am not understanding why not.
    oh, are they screwed on from inside the drawer & now there are screw holes in what would have been the good side?
    Or the countersink for the handle?
    I guess I am confused because you mentioned it before you got to those steps.
    and w/ edge banding on 3 sides you could still turn them.

      @@JasonACadder Are (would they be) the two handles and fronts fixed differently to the drawer body? I'd have thought not.
      Or is it distance to sliders/bottom making more torque that's the issue?

    Love the look of these - great job! My wife wants me to make a new set of cabinet door fronts for our kitchen.
    One question though - you cut off the ends of the plywood because of 'compression grain'. I haven't worked with a lot of plywood so am unfamiliar with what you are refering to. Have you covered this in another video that I can go and look at?
    Thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @841tl

I will remember that one day when I become proficient enough to build my own cabinets. I would love to be able to build my own cabinets one day in my own kitchen. Plywood is expensive enough but I got 8x4 sheets for 63 Euros per sheet. MDF the same size 18mm was 53 per sheet and OSB was 42/3 I think per 8x4 18mm sheets here in Ireland and that was from one of those Big Box stores as u call them.. Hi, What's the dust collector that you're using on your orbital sander?

    Great video, and I appreciate the instructions on making sure the edge banding stays. It’s a simple thing but is important.

    Glad to see that you went back and addressed the split drawer front. When you mentioned doing that I immediately thought about the edge banding. But, you seem to be very meticulous about your work and I knew that you couldn't let it rest. The drawers look really good. Will you do a walk through after you get the kitchen all finished?

    Years of edge banding without a machine I always used a file to trim the overhang.

    The iron must be kept spotless ! And use Blum click on hinges on any doors you have.

    These aren't flat panel, they are slab. Looks decent for a cheap fix

    You might as well put a handle in that blank section in front of the sink.

    Nice work, looks great. I'm going to build similar slab fronts for my cabinets and was wondering how the edge-banding has stood up over time? The other option is to make my own solid-wood edge banding and glue it on, but that's more work and would change the look.

    Great video and beautiful cabinet fronts. You must have the cleanest garage shop I've seen and I love the size of your table saw enclosure. Thanks!
