    That is the craziest intercooler setup ever. The top pipes going from the turbocharger outlet into the intake manifold are exposed to very high speed air moving across the polished aluminum pipes, so they are functioning like intercoolers. What a cool feature. The engine sounds awesome, it has a heavy gear whine, plus a turbo whine. Very cool!

    That depressing moment when a car almost 90 years old has 2 times the amount of horsepower and 4 times the amount of torque as your car...

    • @Ritalie
      @Ritalie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Right. I have been watching all of Jay's videos and the engineering in the 1930's was superior in some ways. The transmission in the Bentley can somehow handle 800 ft lbs of torque. But a lot of transmissions today can't handle that, and will fail pretty quickly. Just amazing that they had the metallurgy and engineering to make something that could shift that smooth and handle 800 ft lbs of torque. And the solid cast engine with cylinder head gasket is far superior to the modern Subaru engine, which is notorious for failed head gaskets. It's just amazing that this car was built so strong. Look up his videos on the 1931 Henderson motorcycle and the Vincent HDR motorcycle, to see another example of incredible engineering. The Henderson was the most high tech thing ever, glassy smooth, with an overdrive. Better than anything today. The new bikes still don't have an overdrive gear, to this day.

    • @popuptoaster
      @popuptoaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Ritalie The reason modern transmissions seem "weaker" to you is because you are comparing the one in the Bentley to a modern car that has parts designed to be light and cheap while coping with the expected power levels, back in the 30's Bentley probably just fitted the strongest transmission they could build/find but these days you wouldn't be fitting a Truck gearbox into a modern supercar. Some of the big Merc saloons do have gearboxes rated for 1000lbs/ft though, so they are available, probably much longer lived, lighter and, relatively speaking, cheaper too.

I do not care about the cost of the end product but how much it means to them. If this is not art form to you OK. But for a lot people that understand the work and thought put into a car like this know it is art. If all you can not understand about my email this is your personal hang up and this is a free world. But if your trying to make me think Jay does not love these cars and is trying to fake us with these posts you have not enough experience with this industry or other people's idea of art.

Give your head a shake if you think you can judge what one person thinks is art. If you can not understand that art is to the eye of the beholder not governed by pig headed people telling you what it should be. There is a old book you should read called Emperor new clothes.

      Please people, calm down. Jay made a very funny remark. That's all. I was in a funny mood and it made me laugh. And I did hear him say "...at Le Mans." at the end of the sentence.. I know exactly what he meant. But the way it came out of his mouth, the spontaneity, was so funny.

      The linguistics mean nothing. It's gearhead language. He also says "it makes power the minute you put your foot in it", and "there are a million lubrication points on these cars". A minute is a LONG time, and there aren't even close to a million parts on the car, but he knows that the people watching his videos understand exactly what he means.

    What the many in the automotive trade call "shock absorbers" are in engineering terms dampers (as they damp down oscillation). the actual shock absorber is the spring. The spring absorbs the shock and the damper dampens down the rebound. So that's what those friction devices are - they are friction dampers (not shock absorbers).
    Unfortunately it's a lost cause now, but dampers really aren't shock absorbers...

    • @ClayLoomis1958
      @ClayLoomis1958 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm not sure why you would say that. With the amount of mechanical talent of the men working in Jay's garage, and Jay's ability to afford the very best, he would not be using a Fram filter unless that damn thing was doing a proper job of it. I think if anyone knows whether a car part works, it's Jay. As far as I'm concerned, having Jay use it on his vehicles is like a seal of approval. He is simply *not* going to use a crap part on one of his carefully and expensively restored vehicles.

    • @ClayLoomis1958
      @ClayLoomis1958 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @John Buick Fram's been around since the 1930's. It's ludicrous to think Jay would use a crap filter in order to save $5 on a car that probably cost $100,000 to restore.

    Jay, so I had the privilege of weaseling my way in the Bentley museum at the Bentley plant in Crewe, UK in 2007. There I got to see one of the rarest Bentley in the world that looked much like your Bentley. That summer I did a pastoral exchange with a Methodist minister from Crewe. Our families basically traded homes and churches for two months, and his "manse" was just across the field from the Bentley plant. All through the summer I looked out the window at the plant and admired the Bentleys being "test driven" around the community. A retired worker from the plant played organ at the church. He told me of the museum and tried to get me a tour but to no avail. It was only open to those who were going to purchase a Bentley; i.e. not someone on a ministers salary. In our last week there I decided to try the "lost American ploy" with a cold call to the factory lobby. The lovely receptionist explained what I already knew, but after expressing how I was on exchange and learned of the museum she said, "Well, just wait a minute I think our curator may be free." Sure enough the curator invited me back and gave me a personal tour of the museum. Starting at a car that looked just like this one (less the cut outs in the hood) he rested his hand upon the original paint from the 1920s and explained the early history. The funniest thing happened after he mentioned how many millions of pounds the car was worth. There were do not touch signs all about, so I commented that I was surprised it was OK to touch original paint like that. Suddenly his hand shot back from the car as if he discovered his hand had been resting on a hot plate. With a wry smile he said, "I suppose I shouldn't be laying a hand on that bit." The tour went on to the LeMane winning Bentley with French grass still in the radiator pods and even getting to sit in a 2008 Continental, but I will never forget that car or his shock at being called out for touching the paint. I headed back to the "manse" aglow with appreciation for English history, hospitality and humor. Thanks for bringing back that great memory.

    Mr. Leno,
    Thank you for the tours of all of the older cars. The engineering just amazes me. I would love to see the people in your shop at work, doing the restoring, upkeep, and especially the improvements. I love that the Bentley is a turbo, I love that the Doble could launch the space shuttle, I love that the Lotus Elan is going to be 300% more powerful. Are these types of things you may be willing to film?
    Most Sincerely,
    Rich Marsh

    • @psk1w1
      @psk1w1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The term 'damper' is more technically correct to describe the action of slowing the suspension movement - to dampen it. Some people use the word 'dampener', a variation of the word 'damper'. Either is technically correct, unlike the word used in the US, 'shock absorber' It doesn't

      The best filter I found is Toyota. lots of media crammed into those.
      US made Purolator, Champion labs (AC Delco, Warner, STP, and other low cost filters) and Wix before a Fram. Wix is overpriced though. Fram is overpriced and the worst design out there.
