    I work at Hospice and death is death and it doesn’t discriminate. I’ve told my family to be good to me while I’m alive and not cry after me in death. I’ve requested cremated with no viewing, no service and no burial. I don’t want no one starring at me saying oh she looks so good or she just didn’t look like herself. Screw that if I’m dead what would you expect!!!

      Your 100% correct. That`s why Andy Griffith wanted an immediate burial after he passed away. He did not want any fanfare, nothing. Just straight into the ground. When My sister passed away in 1993, her friends took pictures of her in the casket. Some would say, look how peaceful she looks, look at this, and so forth. It was like a side show, unbelievable.

    When my grandfather passed, we found during the viewing, stains on the casket bedding. They said it was from makeup powders. We refused that. Then as the pallbearers went around, we found the residue of fluids leaking out. Finally, a sticker under a handle indicated another person. Apparently, they used that casket several times before him. The name on the sticker traced to someone buried weeks earlier. They had to exume that person, and found her in a cheap cardboard box normally used for cremation. Her family too had been charged $4000 for the casket......they found the funeral homes lawyer in Florida....

    Before that location operated as Swanson FH, it was the Greene Home for Funerals. The original location was opened on St. John St in 1949, but relocated to its current location on MLK Ave in 1967 (hence the style of the building's architecture). Leo Greene, the owner of the establishment, ran his funeral operations from there until he retired in the mid-1990's and sold the funeral home to O'neil Swanson II. Greene then moved to San Diego, where he lived out the rest of his days until he passed away in 2008.

    I've learned of a recent update in regards to this. In June 2021, state officials shut down Tri County Cremation Services in Ypsilanti due to allegations of improper storage of human remains and unsanitary conditions. O'neil Swanson II, who ran Swanson Funeral Home in Flint, just so happened to be the owner of the establishment as well as another cremation service provider and that he had been running operations without a license; Swanson's mortuary science license was revoked back in April 2018 in connection to the allegations against his funeral home. What I find interesting/ironic is that Swanson's in Flint outsourced their cremations to Tri County Cremation Services, a connection between the two facilities before the latter came under the ownership of O'neil Swanson II.

      A friend, FH owner, says they usually aren't picked up due to owing $$. A family will put a minimal amount down and walk away. Additionally a funeral home can dispose of cremains after a year. Usually every year, cemeteries have a mass burial for these situations.

    Rust on porcelain slab? Just prooves how unsanitary it was, blood has high iron content and after time will literallty rust in open atmosphere when not properly disinfected and scrubbed off properly.. Even the stainless steel equiptment was getting a orange tinge to them...

    I worked as a funeral hostess while in high school and I just wanted to clarify that those empty urns, framed images, etc. are there as sales samples. Those little details- fancy urns, fancy framed prints of the decedent are things that don't cost the funeral home much, but are excellent upcharges. Don't worry- other than the cremains you actually saw, it is unlikely anyone was actually left behind there. It is my understanding that the general practice is to inter unclaimed cremains after a period of time, as one would in a pauper's field.

      Funeral homes also don't make the kind of money some may think. There's a reason why it's expensive AF! Unless one lives in a region that experiences thousands of deaths per year, with little competition in this industry, funeral homes are not the best investments in terms of business. And you're correct, the money is made in all the extras such as services, coffins, urns, etc. Believe it or not but they're not as expensive as one may assume. Almost all urns, caskets, etc are made in China. Even most tombstones nowadays are made in China. So if you ever buy a stone remember that. Chances are the place you are buying it from, including funeral homes that sell them, are just sandblasting the names into them. Very few places still exist that actually make the stones themselves in North America. It's crazy to think that shipping heavy stones from China is cheaper than making them here, but apparently it is! Some funeral homes will charge you for every phone call you make too. I would suggest staying away from those places btw. But I can see why some funeral homes become corrupted, such as this one. Too much competition, not enough mortalities, etc. And like any business, if you become too desperate and lack in quality of service you'll eventually lose customers.

      @James Albright That’s a fallacy. It’s true minority FHs tend to receive more negative media attention in these circumstances. The unscrupulous practices of a limited number of FHs are equally distributed between Caucasians and others. The FH out west that was selling body parts of persons in their care wasn’t minority owned or operated. Just recently, the FH in southern Indiana that had 31 bodies in various states of decomposition, before it was shut down, wasn’t owned or operated by minorities. There are similar stories of FHs across the U.S. (who weren’t owned or operated by minorities). You just didn’t hear about them.

    I've worked for a privately owned FH many years ago before SCI came onto the scene. It appears corporate owned FH's are taking over those which are family owned. They don't change the names giving the appearance nothing's changed. Smaller FH's can easily fold if they are fined for violations. Pre-Need violations are common. Families are known to have loved ones cremated & will not come in to retrieve the ashes after many failed attempts at contacting them-so they're shelved. Some families will agree to buy expensive caskets they cannot afford & will opt at the last minute for cremation after loved ones have already been placed in caskets. Caskets cannot be re-used, so there can be units laying around which looked like they were once occupied. The floor drain in the garage is probably where decomposed bodies were drained & rewrapped before cremation. Crematories will not accept wrapped remains where excess body fluids are present. The FH industry is changing and consumers are more aware than ever.

    • @MomMom4Cubs
      @MomMom4Cubs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In some states, maybe not yours, you can rent a fancy casket for viewing, then have a far more modest one for actual burial or cremation.
      Tennessee is one place this practice may be common, even if not strictly legal. I'm sure you know people do things regardless of legality, especially when funeral-sums of money are involved.

    • @SS-fx7vz
      @SS-fx7vz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Caskets can be reused. Often times you can rent a nicer casket for the funeral and then the body is put into a more affordable casket. That’s why some of them look reused. It’s because they are.

    Those cremation vaults are not for home use. They're used to place an urn inside for burial. Usually the lid of the vault is sealed to protect from water entering it after burial. The large ones shown in the video are deigned to hold 2 urns. When it's time to bury the second urn they exhume the old vault, break the seal, and place the second urn inside. Also some cemeteries require that an urn is buried in a vault.
    As for the cremains found in the Hurst, I noticed that there was no name tag attached to it. It seems that this funeral home was taking shortcuts and not following protocol/laws for cremation. A metal tag with the name of the deceased, along with an ID number registering their cremation, is placed with the body at the time of cremation. The tag is then retrieved after the body is cremated and is attached to the bag that holds the cremains. Believe it or not but the laws concerning the handling of bodies are very strict. In that industry you have to walk a thin line, and rightfully so.

    The small vaults in the basement weren’t urns - they are just miniature vaults used to show the families the differences in shape and color and quality of the vaults that caskets go in upon burial. They’re just small because entire vaults take up too much space and wouldn’t fit in a display or showroom. Also like another commenter said, many of the engraved urns are likely samples or displays. The same goes for the headstones/markers. I design those for a funeral home and cemetery, and the ones inside are always examples.
