As far as functional systems go, im always impressed with humans and calorie consumption. You can do a hard cardio session and burn hundreds of calories, but you can gain all that energy back in like 2 minutes with one cheeseburger or a couple candy bars. It sucks if you're trying to lose weight, but from a survival standpoint it's amazing

Everything Derek speaks about in relation to calorie counting, weighing, burning, etc is something I've experienced. I lost 110lbs over a 3 year journey. Some people might say that's a slow process and if you break it down, it is, even at 4lbs lost a month. However, as I was going through the process I was starting to become aware of things I was doing and not doing. Because I was so fed up with not getting to the result I wanted as fast as I wanted, I started wavering during the 3 years. I stopped counting calories as accurately. I stopped weighing all my food as accurately. It got to the point that all the little things started adding up in a big way. Another thing I noticed was that I gave myself a little bit of a treat once a week, which was fine at first. However, I slowly started giving myself more treats, more frequently thinking "oh this little bit wont hurt". While it might not have hurt initially, eventually I ended up about a mile of course because I kept saying "a little bit more, a little bit more". Things like that you don't notice unless you really look back on yourself and create some introspection. I feel for this Charlie guy because i've been there. But there's gotta be more to this.

    • @theinvisiblewoman5709
      @theinvisiblewoman5709 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Thanks for sharing! I am taking the slow route. I was severely ill in 2021 and gained almost 50lbs. Once I recovered all I did was shrink my meals/ make healthy versions of foods I liked and went for 2 mile walks 5-7 days/week and lost 25lbs by the end of that year (in 6 months). I’m not in a rush to loose weight either (since I have no health problems related to weight) and at the time I couldn’t do too strenuous physical activity. I was overweight to begin with but that extra 50lbs was the shock I needed. So far this year I’ve lost another 15lbs this time focusing on a calorie deficit with low- moderate carbs (with no scheduled exercise just my daily activity). I plan to add a fitness routine back into my schedule soon. I still eat junks here and these and like you gone too far but as long as we catch ourselves we should be proud of the self awareness to stop and be mindful not defeated by the cravings. I think people over complicate and stress themselves out which can be counterproductive.

Like, literally snacking alllll day. I really shook myself out of it. Now, even though I don't do keto and am on more of a lower carb Mediterranean thing, I don't feel the need to have a snack all the time between meals. I can go through the week just like that now, hell I just didn't eat yesterday because I wasn't hungry, and I know I'm seeing a friend tomorrow for dinner so might as well just eat something to calm my anxiety (the meat stick) and wait until tomorrow's evening to have a good 2 course meal. Unless you have been fat it is difficult to understand the delusions you find yourself believing. Looking back at my old lifestyle is it mind boggling how I thought I was eating/exercising in a way that would lead to weight loss. As you say though, it is not complex. Once I started walking 5 miles a day and maintained a pretty significant calorie deficit (900/1000) while eating sensibly (no junk food, dessert, limited carbs etc replaced by a lot of grilled chicken/salmon and roasted veg as well as a bunch of other stuff, including regular Pakistani food now and then). Went from 84kg to 62kg in five months. It can be done, you just have to stick to it. You got it!!

We have similar stories except I went from fit, to fat, to back to fit. I was 140-145 lbs and in 1.5 years I became the heaviest I ever weighed at 210 lbs. In 2020 I dropped down to 148 lbs in about 6ish months. I believe the difference between someone such as myself thats been fit most of their life and became obese and a person thats always been obese/significantly overweight comes down to mindset because CICO works across the board. I always knew what I was working towards because I'd been where I was trying to go and I already had strong dicipline and work ethic established from being fit previously. All I had to do was get the ball rolling mentally to physically do the necessary things and adhere to the positive habits to lose the weight which I had allowed to stop rolling which got me fat in the first place. Someone thats never been fit/a healthy body weight doesnt have that internal image of themselves to drive them and needs to build that mental strength from scratch to be able to adhere to a diet/excerice routine consistently and get that metaphorical ball rolling, so they can stay consistent and achieve results.

This reminds me of something I heard years ago about the emotional connection to food and denial hurting dieting efforts. If your dog gets really fat and you take it to the vet, what is the vet going to tell you? "Your dog probably has a leptin deficiency. Let's get some bloodwork and prescribe him some medication." "Has your dog tried hot yoga and running on the beach?" No. The vet is going to tell you the dog is eating too much. Why? Because it's obvious. If your dog was fat, you'd feed it less, and the problem would resolve itself. When people are fat, they want to believe anything but the amount of food they're eating is to blame, and it prevents them from addressing the real issue.

I started my weight loss journey this past October. I was almost 400 lbs and so far have lost 75 lbs towards my goal of reaching 225 lbs. The thing a lot of people don’t realize when they try to lose weight is that you will go up and down depending on a ton of factors. The other thing a lot of people forget to take into account is cooking oils. A tablespoon is 100 calories so it can add up quickly if you aren’t being mindful of how much you are using. A lot of times when I have eggs I’ll spray the pan and wipe off any excess oil so it doesn’t impact my count for the day but I’ll still record it as the full amount regardless.

In that app that value shown is his BMR + exercise. It is not calories consumed but calories "burned". His BMR is probably around 3.5K just on its own. So those values that flash on screen are what you get from something just above sedentary levels of daily movement. I can easily hit 4K calories burned on my Fitbit just from being on my feet around the office rather than sitting still all day. If I go out and walk for 45-60mins at a brisk pace with some light jogging mixed in then I can easily get that number over 6K.
If I maintain a 4K daily deficit in Fitbit then I lose weight. but a 500cal deficit in Fitbit and I gain hard. I think the rule of thumb for however Fitbit is calculating calories burned is that you need to keep your BMR+500 as your daily deficit value in order to lose weight.
Seeing such large deficits in the app it can be very tempting to over eat and convince yourself that you are still on track.

They'll eat a salad but then eat a chocolate bar, not comprehending that a single chocolate bar eaten once a day is enough to make you gain 1lb of fat every single week.
Three KFC chocolate chip cookies, which are barely a mouthful each, contain an entire day's worth of calories for an adult.
Contrarily, 5kg of cabbage (that's more cabbage than 5 humans could possibly eat in a day) would contain just 1000 calories: if you could somehow magically give yourself a cow's stomach capable of containing 5kg of cabbage, you could eat that whole 5kg and still be in an extreme calorie deficit for that day, but BOY would you have received a huge amount of nutrition.
This is why people are fat - because fake food (which is all chocolate bars, Mcdonalds and other ultraprocessed foodstuffs) have absolutely preposterous calorie density unlike anything found in nature. Oh and, to boot, there's absolutely no nutrition of value in them - even the calories they do provide are toxins rather than nutrients unless you're extremely underweight (and even then, calories without any of the supporting nutrition might do more metabolic damage than good in such a scenario).

I started doing 10,000 steps a day and put myself in a 500 calorie deficit. I went from 245 to 215 and I am now maintaining before starting my deficit again. It’s been close to a year since I started this and it was not much of a change in my dieting. I still eat what I want and hit my protein intake. I just make sure I don’t eat much more then 2,100 calories a day. What really helped me was to not eat back my calories I supposedly burned. I did that and I stopped losing weight. Tells me that my calorie tracker was over estimating how many calories I burned from working out and my cardio. When I stopped eating back my calories I started to consistently loose my weight again. A few months later I looked at the calories I tracked and the food labels for the foods I ate and I discovered huge problems with calorie tracking these foods. Companies (in the US at least) will round down their calories in labels, lower the calorie count by adding large amounts of fiber(which still count as calories due to soluble fiber), and have inconsistent weights for their foods. I actually was more in a 1300 calorie deficit. Goes to show how inconsistent labeling can affect weight loss.

I lost 50lbs the moment I committed to the fact that this would take probably all god damn year and that I would just stick to my routine all god damn year. Not 90 days to shred or whatever other BS people get onto.
Do the most conservative math possible and plot it out. And then also account for the fact you'll have bad days, get sick, shit will come up and then plot out the worst slowest progress. Then commit to that. Becuase all the successful times will motivate you when you planned for the worst progression timeline.
But I'm serious, I have a friend who unlike me still hasn't shed the 50lbs and he's always trying and quitting stuff. Looking for short cuts and magic pills.

I think when you're very big you're in denial about what you are actually consuming until you take a closer look at every single thing you eat. Your eyes will open when you realize that ranch dressing or that BBQ sauce dip just added a few 100 calories to your daily intake. That Starbucks coffee, or those 2 cans of Coke, or those few beers or mixed drinks you have with your friends during the weekend, they are a few more 100 calories. Most people are like... "But I eat salads and lean meat, and low fat... Why?" That's why. I think it's why tracking every single thing you consume for the first few months, even the first year is imperative for weight loss, especially for very obese people like myself. Eventually, your brain really gets to that point where the new habits have formed, and a new "common sense" on nutrition kicks in. Thoughts like: "That's what a normal amount of food is." or "That muffin is 400 calories, maybe I should have something else with my coffee." become second nature. I've been tracking my calories for 7 months now and I'm down almost 80lbs (from 300 to 222) and I'll probably continue to do it for a while longer until I get to a point where--like I said before--eating properly becomes second nature to me. As for Charlie, if he's still eating at a caloric surplus without truly knowing he's doing it, no amount of exercise will help him lose weight. You can't out-exercise a bad diet.

Wow I first started watching you when you had around 200K subscribers and it’s so crazy to see how much you’ve grown since then.
Also, this video hits home with me because I was definitely on the “insulin makes you fat” train for a long time and made me stall in my weight loss. When I finally decided to put in the work of weighing and tracking every single thing that went into my mouth, I started seeing progress again. Ever since then, I realized all those years I spent thinking it was just impossible for me to lose weight, I was just eating too much (mostly oils and butter in this horrid BPC I had every morning 🙄). It’s empowering because I no longer felt hopeless or like I had no control over it. I was morbidly obese, with PCOS, and have lost almost 100 pounds now. It is definitely achievable even with obstacles, it’s just a matter of properly tracking and weighing everything when you have a propensity to overeat/have a big appetite like myself.

@@bonkersdonkers7381 Thank you! And yes I’m having the exact same problem with my mom. Even after her watching me lose so much weight doing this, she’s still convinced that she has to have no more than 20g of carbs a day or she’ll gain weight. I keep telling her if all she would do is remove 300-400 calories per day (which honestly all she’d have to do is cut out the BPC she drinks), walk 4-5 days a week, and track and weigh everything, she would start seeing progress, even if it’s slow. She loves bread and I told her, you can have bread! Make some low calorie anabolic french toast every morning! But nope. She’s convinced it won’t do anything, and refuses to even try for a couple of weeks, despite there being nothing to lose by just trying it. At my heaviest I didn’t think I could lose on 2000 calories a day, but I tried it anyway and it worked! I never would’ve found a sustainable weight loss routine if I hadn’t at least tried. Idk it’s really frustrating but there’s only so much you can do. They have to be willing to change their mindset and put in the work and we can’t do that for them unfortunately.

The biggest thing for me is that I’ve always been overweight and just recently started working out very hard and dieting. I am 17 years old and I ended up hitting 305 pounds and that was my wake up call. I started out a 305 and now I’m down to 297 in a month. All I did was cut out all fast food and pretty much all sugar. 30+ minutes of cardio before I lift and then lift for about 2 hours or so. I haven’t lost a bunch of weight but that’s because I can easily tell that my body is gaining muscle fast than it’s burning fast so I don’t really look at my weight on the scale that much. My shoulders biceps triceps are all getting much more defined aswell as I have quickly been losing fat in my chest area. I think the best thing to do when you are losing weight is the fact that the scale is your enemy, you can drink loads of water and be almost back to where u started but the next day you can wake up and be down a pound, the human body is weird and does weird things so I don’t really let that kind of stuff fuck with me or discourage me because I know I am making the right choices. I used to eat at least 3500 calories a day now I’m eating around 2300 calories a day of good healthy food. Also don’t set a time limit if you are trying to lose weight because then you feel the need to have to lose a certain amount per week and when you don’t hit that you become so un motivated. Also if you slip up at all don’t worry about it just make sure to learn from your mistakes. I’ve slipped up but I don’t let it get to me. I usually add 10 minutes to my cardio if I slip up just to discipline myself.
