RC Chinook Bicopter - Part 2

  • Less of a build video this week and more of a control and stability lecture! Without spoiling the video, aircraft don't hover like pendulums!! This is the most common misconception that I see when I upload a video about any kind of aircraft that hover, from my VTOL tilt-rotor, to my SpaceX model. I wanted to make a separate video explaining this, but thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do so and also reach the widest audience. I hope my explanations make enough sense to prevent any more comments telling me to move the battery lower for better stability ;)

    As someone who I can’t remember once said:
    “Airplanes are designed to fly, and therefore love to fly.
    However, to make a helicopter fly, you essentially have to put a gun to its head and force it to fly”

      @@TomStantonEngineering and Ryan M - the aeronautics teacher used to compare the stability of helos vs fixed wing to the following Fixed Wins is like putting a ball inside a soup bowl, it will rock fm side to side untill it stops. A helo is putting the ball on top of another ball. When it starts going crazy, it keeps going crazy and faster untill the control is lost by the pilot. What a fun machine LOL

    This is LITERALLY the first time someone explained to me what actually causes the "rocket pendulum fallacy" until now I just knew that it existed and how it plays out in practice.
    And yes, I was too lazy to either look it up or think it up myself.

      I think that anyone who has studied any amount of aerospace learns about that fallacy. I learned about it in my first year. It makes sense when you think about it though.

    • @MichelPASTOR

      I think the inspire raises the propellers mainly to put them outside of the camera's view.

    • @TomStantonEngineering
      @TomStantonEngineering  6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      As Michel said, the inspire raises the propellers to move them clear of the camera. Changing the height of the mass on a quadcopter just adjusts the point at which it pivots about, it doesn't make it more stable.

    As an professional engineer I find your explanations very well thought out and accurate. I enjoy watching your projects as you isolate and eliminate issues as they arise. It is refreshing and quite educational that you include the real-life failures that accompany all engineering efforts. Keep up the great videos! On a very minor point, the torque that you mentioned during your pendulum demonstration is referred to as a "moment" (That said, based on your obvious knowledge, I expect that you already know that and choose to use the more universally understood "torque" for the laymen who might be confused by the more technical "moment"). Anyway, great work!

    I've heard so many people tell me that the reason their aircraft is stable is because it is heavy at the bottom. At a competition a while back someone literally put a weight at the bottom of their aircraft to make it more stable thinking that it would act like a pendulum. While the weight worked it was because the over sensitive gyros has less effect on the aircraft. I was so excited when you first mentioned the comments saying the the bi-copter would fly like a pendulum because I knew how good of an example the bi-copter is. The vectoring thrust makes explaining torque while flying much easier. I've been wanting a good small scale real life proof that aircraft don't level like a pendulum for a long time, and this video is perfect. Thanks for doing a great job explaining this!!

    The scale helicopter community fails to recognize the flight controller as a tool....im not partial to "real flying" but when you have 1000 hours building and 3000 invested why risk it? This is an awesome demonstration of an unusual helicopter design using the tech with 100% SUCCESS. You're a badass my friend

    great video tom, found this really interesting to watch as i am a electrical avionics engineer on chinooks as well as a fpv pilot myself. this looks like a great build and looking forward to part 3 , the temptation to find a old flight controller and some other spare parts is very tempting haha. keep up the good work.
