  • @emitindustries8304

    I did a silo launch experiment around 1990. I made a rocket out of ¾" pcv tubing, put on folding fins made from plastic drinking cups, and put the "D-1" Estes motor on top of the tube. The motor was placed there so that I could line the tube with gunpowder from a shot gun shell, held on with gasoline. The added boost from the gunpowder/gasoline would significantly energize the rocket. The rocket then went into my custom made launch silo.
    I calculated that the rocket motor, with extra boost, contained in the launch tube, would really make this puppy fly like a literal bat out of hell!
    My friend and I went to a local grassy park in Southern California for our first test flight. The small bit of gasoline was dribbled inside the rocket tube, then sprinkled with gunpowder. The igniter was attached to the motor at the top of the rocket. Rocket slid into launch tube, wiring set. We took shelter behind our nearby car, just in case.
    The button pushed, and the rocket blasted out of the tube perfectly, for about 5 feet, or 1 second.
    Apparently, using pvc tubing was an unforseen problem. The intense heat from the motor at the top, with combined burning from the boost mix, heated the tubing to its near melting point. As soon as the rocket cleared the tube, it became like wet spaghetti, and the motor thrust was 'vectored' like high pressure water coming out of a loose garden hose.
    The rocket went up left, right, forward, and back, right at us. We ducked, and hoped the terror of the out of control missile would end before anyone was damaged.
    The spent projectile plopped to the ground after traveling 20 circuitous feet. The rocket body was twisted like a Twizzle liquorice stick. We were laughing our heads off at the results, and the fact that we were in one piece.
    I'd made 2 of these things, so naturally we tried it a second time, only with no gunpowder/gasoline now. We got further back, hit the power, and.... same thing. Our ordinance went crazy, like a heat seeking 'Sidewinder' looking for a nonexistent MiG-29! We ducked behind my car. Plop! went the errant pvc tube, bent like a soggy pretzel stick.
    We went back to our garage laboratory, to make our next ridiculous toy; a BAZOOKA! Fortunately, that ended when we realized that if someone saw us shooting a shoulder launched, directional rocket, that we might be mistaken for terrorists, and there was a lot of that going on then.
    We didn't have the money for lawyers to explain that we're just hobbiests, experimenting with novel homemade toy rockets. It's also against model rocket doctrine to be able to aim your rocket at anything. We were planning on shooting down low level kites. Bad idea.
    I'd made my own JAVELIN out of 3 feet of 4 inch gray pvc tube, with a toy squirt gun handle, push button trigger, and a metal computer cooling fan screen for a sight. The missile was once again ¾" pvc, with the nose cone made from a large 'Crayola Crayon' top I'd gotten from Goodwill.
    This made it look exactly like a Russian RPG! It was beautiful, and entirely stupid. If the police saw me with this, in 1990, I would have either been shot dead on sight, or still be rotting in a federal jail.
    Regretfully, I threw the whole contraption away. But it would have been glorious!

    • @MrMattumbo
      @MrMattumbo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      DH Yukon actually it’d be the Russians. US Minuteman missiles hot launch (rocket motor propels it) out the silo while the Russians use a missile that cold launches like this.

    • @YukonK9
      @YukonK9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MrMattumbo Well yes, the US Air Force and Navy only uses hot launch systems come to think of it. I meant the thumbnail as a joke, not the video itself. The only cold launch system used by the US Military I can remember of the top of my head would be the javelin, although that's from a launch tube, not a silo.

    Did this 35 years ago on a much simpler platform. Built a rocket based on the Estes "scram" rocket with spring loaded fins. After several static tube launches we graduated to a shoulder launched model. No fancy electronics just a 16" rocket on a D-engine and some burnt Mullets.
