A cover of U2's 'Zoo Station' from their 1991 classic Achtung Baby. This version can be found on the cover mount CD - "AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered" on the December issue of Q Magazine in the UK
NIN were ones of the main inspirations in the making of Achtung Baby and Zoo Station is an attempt of making a dance/industrial rock song. It all makes sense
"I'm ready to say I'm glad to be alive". Wasn't sure how to feel about Trent covering U2, but he picked the right song. You can hear the emotion in his voice has changed. This is really groundbreaking for NIN and no one is noticing. Keep up the good work Trent.
This is a demonstration of NIN's capability to create sound. The cover may not do much with arrangements or phrases, but the textures create an aural experience that very few can match.
Didn't know about this cover until now! Thought I'd check it out, pretty weird imagining NIN covering U2... and wow, I just have to say, I didn't know his voice could go that deep. Pretty cool. This bops.
I'm not surprised- there are moments that definitely have an "industrial" feel throughout Achtung Baby (Speaking as a former HUGE U2 fan as a kid, who then moved onto NIN and other bands around 12 or so...).
The point of a (good) cover is to approach an established piece from a fresh perspective while also presenting the covering artist in interesting and often unexpected ways. Doing this as an industrial banger would have been obvious and boring, given both the original sound and the sound of TR's catalogue. This is just about the perfect cover. For the opposite, see Manson doing Personal Jesus versus Cash doing it. Johnny Cash knew what to cover, and why.
Good point. Sweet Dreams is a fine cover, indeed. Although I think this one is particularly clever because it subverts expectations by being very different from BOTH the original sound of the song AND NIN's "typical" sound. It kind of turns everything on its head.
Manson's cover of The Ramones' "The KKK Took My Baby Away" fits that description. There's virtually no guitars on it, very different from the original, and stylistically for Manson. It's musically beautiful in my opinion. Ramones fans fucking HATE it, but as a Manson fan, I love it. A hidden gem for sure.
I might have to actually buy this fucking CD just for this song, only because it seems IMPOSSIBLE to find a non-muffled version of this song anywhere online (still grateful for the upload so I can hear it, but yeah). Wish NIN fans had reacted more positively to this, seems like a lot of the fanbase really dislike his dives into Shoegaze; peresonally, I only wish he'd go further, I think that dream-pop esque style suits the aging Reznor extremely well. Something I only noticed this listen: Around 4 minutes, a VERY very low-in-the-mix return of the "it's alright / it's alright / it's alright" vocal makes a comeback, buried in what I believe is probably the guitar track. Very cool
"Wish NIN fans had reacted more positively to this." You only get that reaction from the ones who want him to pump out his first three albums over and over again.
Whoa! Never heard this before, pretty dang awesome. These vocals are freakin' beautiful. Can't believe there's so many of you downplaying this track, or saying it's "not NIN". I guess you just can't please everyone...
It's really inspiring to see where Trent is out now when you look back on pretty hate machine. The beginning he started in such a dark place, and to see how much he got his life together in such an awesome way really gives me hope to what one can achieve. Anyone who merely dismisses him for not sounding "angry" is missing the point.
Obviously, Trent has done many covers in his career. They've always been fantastic in their own right. He has such an amazing way of really reworking something to make it into his own track. This song (aside from Metal by Gary Numan) is quite possibly the best example. The original is great, but I suddenly feel a warm connection with this song that the original couldn't give. I hate to do this, but I literally made a whole video on my channel on why I love this song so much.
For me, their best in some time. The warmth and beauty but underlying violence in the swarm of guitars, the low and droning harmony that seethes with more tension than a yell. A lot of "NIN fans" seem to think it's not 'hard enough', or U2 is "gay" or something...don't you remember the surging, euphoric noise element of the Nine Inch Nails sound? A Warm Place? Much of 'The Fragile'? "Ready to say I'm happy to be alive", cover seems to show a new way for NIN without being any less emotional.
Oh good god, so many people hating on this not being "NiN". What is NiN anyway? March of the pigs? or maybe Right where it belongs? 1 - This is a cover 2 - Technology changes, Trent's sound changes 3 - This is a cover 4 - NiN has changed since TDS, listen to Year Zero 5 - This is a cover 6 - I'm just glad Trent is still making music
U2 puts out a song with an apparently strong NiN influence. Years later, NiN covers the song with a decidedly early 90s U2 feel. Well done Mr Reznor, well done.
Also, I didn't realize until a few listens, but Trent has always been inspired by/interested in early 90's "Shoegaze" music (My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, etc.) this is pretty much the first time I've heard him actually full on do something in that vein. This song could be a lost gem from '92
The Slip was released in 2009. Trent's also done the entire score for the movies The Social Network and the american version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. He even had a side project with his wife Atticus Ross named How To Destroy Angels if you need a fix to tide you over until Nine Inch Nails' next release. lol
From wikipedia: In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Reznor has indicated that in 2012, he will be writing for the majority of the year with Nine Inch Nails "in mind". He stated, "I plan on spending a good portion of this coming year writing with that in mind. And we'll see what happens with it." Here's to hoping :)
@Fabris6 well since we last heard from Nine Inch Nails (ie Trent) he's gotten married, had a son, done several movie soundtracks, won and oscar....growth happens. I'm looking forward to whatever he's gonna give us.
It's a reinterpretation people. It's exactly why artists participate in these tributes. I'm sure any one of them could "copy" the original but what would be the point? I think this is excellent.
The reason people aren't liking it is because they equate NIN with dissonance and U2 are generally without dissonance in their music. The end of this track, atmospherically, is the most like NIN. I, personally, think this is a remarkable cover, and a beautiful merging of Trent's production style and one of U2's most misunderstood songs. Bravo, Trent!
yes, i don't know, but the sounds, the song himself has something that makes you think when you hear it and makes you be more connected with the lyrics, I love this kind of atmospheres but still I'm waiting for something radically new on their new album...
Since Trent "retired" NIN, you can really hear Atticus' influence coming through in all of his songs, on the Social Network soundtrack, the GWADT soundtrack, and this cover now. This is a great cover with some good atmosphere in the background, but if this was truly "Nine Inch Nails" covering U2, then there's a very noticeable absence of grit.
The NIN version is hard to find in CD form, as it was released with a magazine; whereas Achtung Baby is every store with most U2 fans owning a copy or two. That being said, this is a great version.
Trent's new stuff is a lot more hopeful, peaceful and euphoric sounding but still kind of dark and mysterious. This is really evident in HTDA and The Social Network soundtrack as well as this. I really like it, some close minded people just want another Downward Spiral though. This really reflects him as a person and how he's changed.
Do you really expect a 47-year-old man who recently won an oscar and a golden globe award, along with being married to a beautiful wife with a son would still have something to be angry about?
dude, since the beginning, NIN has done so many covers. look into their b-sides and non-album tracks and live-only tracks. many, many wonderful covers.
@punctualbird yeah that's true, music taste is subjective. It depends on what mood I'm in, a lot of the time I just want to listen to The Downward Spiral. This is a bit of a change for those who grew up with that stuff and loved it but this would also appeal to a wider range of people who want to hear something more easy listening. I love the Social Network soundtrack and actually really like the HTDA EP and even though you can NIN sound in them they are made for a different and older audience.
Just read the following from an article about what's current. "In the meantime, Reznor remains busy with his new band, How to Destroy Angels, which also features his wife, Mariqueen Maandig. Its debut album, Welcome Oblivion, is out on 5 March." Just listened to iTunes previews they're not bad, need to get and listen to all the songs in their entirety after purchasing.
actually, i listen to NIN all the time. i like his softer stuff, but it's Zoo Station! there was so much room to really make it rock, and it just droned on. sorry that i don't blindly say i like every song he puts out!
I like it better than the original version - have to confess never liked U2, just a few songs. I love this style of Trent. He changes with time just like everyone. This calmer or soundtrack style is close to my taste so I'm happy he made this song better.
When I heard Trent did a cover of U2's Achtung Baby stuff, I had hoped (assumed) he would have done "The Fly" - I always thought that Bono and Trent had really similar looks and vocal styles in that song. Or even "Even Better Than The Real Thing" (same similarities). Those songs would have literally been PERFECT for Trent! But, he instead chose "Zoo Station"?? This was such a wasted opportunity.... *sigh*
Honestly, huge NIN fan. I get the comments about it being softer. But Trent has always done subtlety as well as - if not better than - the in your face grind of the machine. I read before about ZS being a ref to heroin use around the area in Berlin, and getting clean. Whether that's true I don't know. But the idea of Trent covering it, given his past addictions, is one I definitely can get behind. Taken in that way, it def feels like the calm of realizing i'm ready to move past the destruction.
@punctualbird He grew up, what do you expect? He got bored of jumping around and thrashing a guitar so he started making smarter and more mature music. The exact same thing happened to Radiohead and that's mostly why these are my two favourite bands. Not saying I didn't like the old NIN but I don't think they've had a down point it's just changed.
You do know that he's only taking a break from NIN, right? Reznor gave away The Slip for free, because he wasn't even trying to make it amazing, he was making it as a farewell gift. But he recently said "all signs point to yes" about returning to NIN very soon. He even said he's working on a 'best of NIN' compilation album featuring 2 new songs due near the end of 2013. He also confirmed that he has serious plans to release an all-out fully-fledged new NIN album in 2014, and perform live.
If someone makes a cover I dont want the cover to be the same has the original! I like the approach Reznor did to the song! Its another perspective and I appreciate it! Its like another point of view
@CHEM1ZON Sure thing... Dead souls was when exactly? NIN has changed. I'm not saying it's better now, but there are some songs that do sound like that now..
well if you're gonna treat this like that, then you should've said the same about All the Love in the World off of With Teeth. This cover is in that vein and (to an extent) some of the stuff on The Fragile so it is very much Nine Inch Nails.
NIN were ones of the main inspirations in the making of Achtung Baby and Zoo Station is an attempt of making a dance/industrial rock song. It all makes sense

Die hard U2 and Trent Reznor/NIN fan and I LOVE this!
Same here! Big fan of both!
Interesting fact: U2 was actually influenced by Pretty Hate Machine on their album Achtung Baby.
I'm not surprised- there are moments that definitely have an "industrial" feel throughout Achtung Baby (Speaking as a former HUGE U2 fan as a kid, who then moved onto NIN and other bands around 12 or so...).
@@MsFuzzipoo ya. love both
Clicked on this thinking it would be an AI cover. Boy was I glad to find out it was the real thing. This is incredible.

More like Manson doing Personal Jesus vs Manson doing Sweet Dreams
Good point. Sweet Dreams is a fine cover, indeed. Although I think this one is particularly clever because it subverts expectations by being very different from BOTH the original sound of the song AND NIN's "typical" sound. It kind of turns everything on its head.
Well said, Travis. A lot of people don't understand this.
Manson's cover of The Ramones' "The KKK Took My Baby Away" fits that description. There's virtually no guitars on it, very different from the original, and stylistically for Manson.

im one of those U2 fans who are open to collaborating artists. Sometimes i become a fan of them because of that.
Obviously, Trent has done many covers in his career. They've always been fantastic in their own right. He has such an amazing way of really reworking something to make it into his own track. this is bliss... trent reznor has covered in style...
Incredible
Trent is one of the greatest musicians of the 21st century
This is like the best cover out of the album I think. I mean this is my favorite U2 song and this cover is just amazing!
Definitely not the cover I expected, but I love the way it fronts the lyrics and builds a texture with the music. More intriguing than just a banger.
For me, their best in some time. The warmth and beauty but underlying violence in the swarm of guitars, the low and droning harmony that seethes with more tension than a yell. It's so eerie and yet so good at the same time.
U2 and NIN are my favourite sounds. The universe is folding and bending around me when events like this occur.
Loved this cover. U2 is my favorite band, NIN my second fav. I’m glad Trent did this as a stripped down version.
Oh good god, so many people hating on this not being "NiN". What is NiN anyway? March of the pigs? or maybe Right where it belongs?

U2 puts out a song with an apparently strong NiN influence. Years later, NiN covers the song with a decidedly early 90s U2 feel. Well done Mr Reznor, well done.
GOD, this makes me want to hug Treznor so much.
This is too good for words. NIN is the perfect band to cover this song.
U2's original of this song is more NIN than NIN.... :S odd.
still love it though.
Brian Eno / Flood
I remember when I visited Santorine, this song was playing.
Also, I didn't realize until a few listens, but Trent has always been inspired by/interested in early 90's "Shoegaze" music (My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, etc.) this is pretty much the first time I've heard him actually full on do something in that vein. It's a reinterpretation people. It's exactly why artists participate in these tributes. I'm sure any one of them could "copy" the original but what would be the point? I think this is excellent.
Reminds me of Chris Vrenna during " The Attraction to All Things Uncertain".

I, personally, think this is a remarkable cover, and a beautiful merging of Trent's production style and one of U2's most misunderstood songs. Bravo, Trent!
First thing I thought when I heard Zoo Station was "that sounds Trent Reznor inspired"
I'm ready...I'm ready for the next NIN album

Brilliant.
Now, U2 has to do a NIN song. Maybe "In this twilight".
A favorite U2 song; like, top 5.
This. Is just. So. Really. Fucking. Amazing
I'll be forever thankful to Trent Reznor for this cover. Lost count of how many hundreds of times I've listened to it.
Why isnt this in spotify?
The original U2 track is industrial if you go back & listen with fresh ears.
@Dormyr The last thing he released under NIN was the theme for Tetsuo: the Bullet Man.. You can't exactly say he's not giving us variety.
Since Trent "retired" NIN, you can really hear Atticus' influence coming through in all of his songs, on the Social Network soundtrack, the GWADT soundtrack, and this cover now.

Trent writed in his twitter page yesterday: "OK, back to work. LOTS of new music coming your way very soon...!!!!!!
MY Q magazine issue did not contain the U2 cover disc. PISSED!!! Glad it's here.
Trent's new stuff is a lot more hopeful, peaceful and euphoric sounding but still kind of dark and mysterious. This is really evident in HTDA and The Social Network soundtrack as well as this. this is great!

NIN and garbage did the best covers in this album.
Def Agree!🎶🔥🎶
Amazing.
That was epic. Reminded me a lot of the "With Teeth" era, which was my favourite NIN era.
I love Trent and Bono and this is a great track on both versione. U2 has always the better!
If you are a true Nine Inch Nails fan then you know NIN is Trent Reznor, and anything with his voice is beautiful!
@KonopKg I love your mastery of grammar and the English language in general.
this is a very as of late version by trent...this is his sound recently more mellowed out...his sound imitates his positive peaceful realized self
actually, i listen to NIN all the time. i like his softer stuff, but it's Zoo Station! there was so much room to really make it rock, and it just droned on. sorry that i don't blindly say i like every song he puts out!

Trent Reznor is the man and fuck what anybody has to say he has proved himself to get where he is today amazing song NIN forever!!!!!!!!!!!!
