    I always love a visit to Statfold- The layout of the track and the sheer variety of locos and rolling stock they have is the envy of many a preservation group.
    One thing surprised me about Britomart and her sister engine Statfold- They both have these odd holes in the bufferbeam where you would expect the buffers to be, but neither engine has them. I can only assume that they either originally had buffers and they were later removed, or it's intentional, and they're cut-outs for part of the piston or slide valve rods to go through so they don't hit the buffer beam?

    "Iron Dinosaur" is quite Nostalgic to me, a documentary called "The Golden Age of Steam" and a certain Cerulean Cheeky tank engine are why I love and respect railways. No I don't call them railroads, I even in the Eh' Old USA (Not getting into it but rail circles are about all I am proud of save my home town actually doing a reverse on a unfortunate acronym behind the name Anna, sundown no more.) and I plan to get into toy making that will feature rails. I am quite mad at Mattel so knowing of a certain Furness Railway tank engine 😈Short stumpy funnels, boilers and Domes won't be signature to them. Granted it can't be blue, and all the blue spectrum is my favorite.
    Sorry if that doesn't make much sense but I got a splitting headache and am thinking foggy. Cheers and by the way keep the past running for future generations! Steam shall never die.

Thanks!

    • @vonyinzer
      @vonyinzer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or do most British trains (from a certain time period) not have brakes on the whole train, and the "Brake Van" provided braking in addition to the engine?

    • @Bobbingtonn
      @Bobbingtonn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Extra braking / emergency braking
      That and some trains didn't have brakes throughout

    • @lmm
      @lmm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heya, in the early days of the railway there wasn't the continuous brake - that functions on each vehicle in the train - it was just the locomotive that had a brake.
      As trains became bigger it became apparent that one locomotive had insufficient braking on its own, so a heavy wagon with its own brake that could be operated by the guard was added.
      This also gave the guard somewhere to be, with a roof and a stove, and traditionally marked the rear of the train.
      Brake vans remained in use, particularly on unfitted trains up to the 80s I believe

    When you have two steam locomotives in front of the same one train, how do you ensure that they pull equally? If they do not pull evenly, one will slow down the other, and there must be a great strain on the coupling between them. I understand how modern locomotives can do this, and that a locomotive (or several) can be placed in the middle of the train to help, but how do you do this with a primitive steam locomotive? Always place the weaker locomotive behind the stronger one?

    • @lmm
      @lmm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just working together, the first engine should aim to keep the coupling taught.
