The only thing that would've made it better would've been having preserved North Staffordshire Railway locos up and running or on display. We only have one static steam engine and the battery loco, which haven't run in decades.
I’m glad that the Princess Tank Engine and the battery loco were preserved. The North Staffordshire railway is really unknown and not too well documented. I wish a few more of its engines survived for the 100th gala.

Work done by the many hands he supervised. Thanks for the great video that helps me to get an idea of the engineering and operation of the line. I'm doing more research in order to do a small model of the NSR during George's time as chief engineer.
Next sunday trradbally steam rally here in ireland, I look forward to the event as much as Christmas day. Hope our ever present rain stays away. Would love to be there looks great.
Hey lawrie! One quick question, how is the abandoned railway now? You should possibly make a video about further updates. I saw in a magazine the station and track bed was looking spectacular! They’ve started to dig out the turntable. This could be a good video idea!
That looks like a really fantastic event even it not a gala of course, but it does look fantastic indeed. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the event due to weather, but I may hope to visit during next month to see these amazing carriages plus the Bagnall 0-4-0ST in action. Excellent video of you on the footplate of these amazing locomotives 👍
I went to the Sealed Knot Battle of Nantwich re-enactment last January; the train I got from Derby - Crewe & return was the route of the old North Staffordshire Railway, nicknamed the "Knotty". Very fitting🙂
@@FoxfieldRailwayOfficial Thank you for making the day so enjoyable, plenty to do and lots to see. I'm more of a diesel guy, but I still had no complaints, other than needing to go home of course
Going to have to visit this railway. Staffordshire seems to be a great place to see industrial railways as you have the Foxfield and the Chasewater railway both running industrial steam and diesel.
You also have the Churnet Valley.. they have 2 S160s and a Polish tank in service with another S160 being restored.. They aren’t industrials but they are unique!
@therailtourer ah yes that is another I want to visit especially when the new line is built as they have a walkway passing through the same tunnel the trains will be running through.
Lovely to see Horden going out and about rather than being restricted to tanfield, hopefully not bringing the line side fires she continues to inflict on tanfield railway.
3:50 I’ve cleaned out the Pits at the Bluebell Railway. But it was a lot harder as we had the Barrow on the out side of pit so I had to swing the shovel up and out. And the ash was from a BR Standard Class 5 so they was a lot more that the ash from an industrial tank engine 😂.
Some of those little bagnalls can pull ten times the weight they are pulling in this video. They are superb little work horses. Many of them spent their working lives moving heavy loads in and out of docks , mines and quarries
On the toss of a coin, it was either Corris or Foxfield that weekend. Corris it was. I knew I could count on great footage from yourself , and it is , and as I've visited Foxfield quite a few times I felt I wasn't really missing out. But... Watching the video...I might have missed a chance of glimpsing..."the Laurie"!☹️
Lovely video Lawrie, was great to talk to you again. Certainly was a challenge, avoiding the rain, I'm surprised I got so many clips for my video given how often I ran for cover😂 Kerr Stuart was definitely my favourite, and I'll say getting soaked in the rain to get those shots at the end was worth it 😆
On closer inspection, the windows of the "Wagons Lits" coach are painted on. Is that just a GUV painted to look like a passenger coach? On another topic, the round section connecting rods of the wee blue Kerr Stuart look rather dainty compared to the chunky rectangular section connecting rods of the other engines.
I believe you’re on about the former bass belle? Yes they’re currently painted on as an interim solution. One day we may be able to outfit her for hosting meals or such.
Coal bunkers... Lawrie, I'd like an opinion about what is easier to shovel. On a tank locomotive, coal is easier to shovel when it's next to the boiler or behind the cab? John British Columbia, Canada p.s. 26:16 To me, any time in the locomotive or brake van would be considered First Class.
Depends entirely on what the engine is. A bigger tank engine where you can swing, and you have a bigger box you need to launch it into, behind is better. For this engines that it's just placing coal, there often isn't room to swing the shovel round if it was behind you!
Have you ever considered doing a video on any Irish locos? Something like Bord Ná Mona no.2 at the Stradbally Woodland railway, or Nancy at the Cavan & Leitrim, I think they would be more than willing to accommodate you.
Lovely, also if you get a chance, make sure to see some of the mainline steam locos if you can. There’s no scheduled trains yet but keep an eye out, as having seen ‘Merlin’ myself, she’s not one to be missed!
Are there any front cab/footplate steam engines out there? You could call it a backwards steam engine. Im just wondering if there's a reason for having the boiler out in front where its blocking the drivers view. They work in both directions. So why not design one where the driver gets a better view of the track ahead if the engine doesn't need a tender that is
Judging by the progress the Swanage railway has made with their T3 from the NRM disposal gift, I wouldn't be surprised that the Foxfield might get the North Staffs loco running again.
She would need a complete, very expensive overhaul to put her in museum condition let alone fully working.. Mallard will be running by the time NSR N° 2 will be considered for overhaul
@therailtourer when I visited the Great Gathering someone asked one of the museum staff if Mallard will run again and the person said probably not as it isn't in great condition even though it looks stunning. After its record run it started having many mechanical faults occur which were never repaired properly since then and during the war it got even less attention as it was only maintained to keep it running. Then in the BR era its work started getting reduced when the Deltic diesel was brought out and replaced Mallard and her other A class express services. The North Staffs tank has a better chance at being revived back to life as its a smaller locomotive and in the current future of heritage railways, smaller steam locomotives are more economical to run over the larger express locomotives.
