My first time visiting and as soon as I walked out the ticket office I SAW YOU a very quick hello. So much to see and such variety not even the weather could spoil the day massive thank you and a huge well done to everyone putting on the event. Will definitely be back!
Hi Lawrie, Great to see you in a far happier place but then anywhere would be better than your tractor shed video . Great coverage of the event loved the drone shots.
It's honestly crazy how much goes in to making these engines spotless, over on the other side of the pond it's the opposite engines are cleaned but not to that extent unless it's a streamlined engine
I have known about Scaffold for a long time, but I have never realised what a fabul ous we up. The drone footage was spot on. Thank you for such an enjoyable video.
I have a new found respect for British narrow gauge and tiny industrial engines because of your channel. Growing up in the colonies these have always been my favorite especially the Maine two footers or industrial locomotives. I never knew there was a Plymouth in the UK!
Just learnt that the engine you rode originally ran on a sugar cane railway in south africa and it was brought over to the UK and it ran at the Alford Valley Railway
What beautiful engines and rolling stock, an absolute credit to the men & women volunteers who run that railway, a great pity you had such bad weather on the day. Great production by the way 👍
Great video, the filming quality is very high, especially considering the difficult weather. It is nice to have different vantage points, and the drone too.
Even with the rain I had a truly amazing day here. Such great selection of locos and unique viewing opportunities. Some spectacular shots and another great video Lawrie. Quite funny spotting myself in some of the shots. Can't recommend the SBR enough it's such a special place. Can't wait for the next event.
Lawrie, Ben and Alex, A great video , thanks for sharing. The steam plumes with all of the rain made a great show, thanks guys for putting up with all of it.
Another great video, filmed in awful conditions. I was one of the many who had to be rescued by tractor to get out of the carpark. Hasn't put me off though and ill be back for the model railway show next weekend. Will say hello if we cross paths
As much as i love the narrow gauge steam engines that "Galloping Goose" really caught my eye for its oddity. It is like a very British take on the American Galloping geese that ran on Rio Grande. Also cool to see how you shut down a steam engine at the end of the day.
What an extravaganza! I love special days like that where everyone pulls out the stops and shows off what they have been working on and the pride they have. As other have noted, not even the damp, damped the enthusiasm I could see on everyone's face.
Now I know why the camera was attached to the loco. That locomotive and all of the others running were absolutely amazing. Includes the little 12" locomotives as well on the new line. Loved the Goose with its themed luggage including the chickens.
You need to get down to the RHDR. 90 mph scale running on double track is quite the experience. plus you can do some parallel running on special events.
Thank you and the others at the event for a good day. And Cheers for taking a second to talk my repeat (offender friend) who said he wanted to talk to you earlier in the day. And then headed in the opposite direction each time we had the opportunity to lol 😅
wait so this entire time there was a vid of saccharine THIS WHOLE TIME HOW DUMB CAN I BE?! 9 months ago dang... still great to see this this thing again i do hope it comes back to Alford some day!
A lot of the locomotives Statfold Barn have come from overseas as many narrow gauge locomotives were sold to sugar plantations. Saccharine was sold to one such sugar plantation company in India.
Always a good day at statfold what ever the weather! I do however wished they stopped one of the lines heading down to the loop. (Possibly the high line) Like they used too. It made getting each loco for haulage a lot easier! Wastes to much time getting stuck around the ballon or on the passing loop. Put on the plus side of that it does get my steps up between Statfold jnc and oak tree 😂
What a wonderful place, sorry railway. Was there a lot of wheel slip? My only criticism is that the film is not long enough I could watch this all day it is so beautifully shot. It was also great to see Jack scurrying about. The engines and rolling stock are all in such beautiful condition.
2:00 No matter wat the weather you must be proud of your locomotive At the umgeni steam railway Im the head of engine cleaning And we use a power washer to get the oil greace and dirt off the wheels rods and frame and after that parrifine and rags to do the finninshing touches When im power washing and it starts raining We are allowed to stop and wait But I just take my shirt off and continue Heck i find myself polishing 2685 in the rain because im not allowed to shunt the engine back into the shed Its not pleasant but if i want to get on the footplate one day i must do it
Second video of LMM I have seen with the K1 Garratt in it & both times now it has received barely a glance, let alone a chat about it.... Do you not like Garratt's or something? This time we didnt even get to see it moving- Im guessing it wasnt broken because Im certain I saw steam drifting up out of it... Such a unipue loco & with a HUGE story behind it along with being the first of a loco type it would be perfect for one of your steam-it-up & natter about it sessions that we all love... Please Lawrie, give us some Garratt content from ol' K1, pleeeeease....
Bit of a technical question, but were these engines fitted with brick arches to begin with? A prohibition on firing on the move is a new one on me, then again I was always told not to hang around with the firedoor to protect the sheets and the flues from cold air rushing in.
The K1 may have/still have, but it's technically not part of the collection, and I've not climbed on it. Most of the engines - smaller especially were meant for single man operation, so you built your fire and just got on with whatever was needed, pause, rebuild, continue. So they didn't have one. Unless there's a brick arch I've always not opened the doors if the engine is working, having a quick check and fire when you're costing is fine. I guess by doing this it just ensures no working with the doors open, especially things like the quarries with tiny boxes!
What was the reason for the motion of the French Corpet locomotive. Apart from the cylinders being set high. I assume an industrial locomotive of whatever origin would have all the moving parts set as low as possible so it oscillated less on temporary track. I assume the name of the Fowler locomotive is some kind of joke, since the locomotive came from a Cane Sugar plantation in South Africa. It looks like the chimney is 'QD' without disturbing the alignment with the blast-pipe. The locomotive can burn oil or coal at the beginning of the milling campaign but burn dried cane waste (bagasse) by fitting a spark-arresting chimney in place of the stove-pipe.
I think the design for the Corpet was to keep the cylinders away from low down obstructions. I have no idea on the origins of the Fowler name I'm afraid.
Hi! the Corpet-Brown design was specifically built for public works locomotives, so they were expected to run on pretty much terrible trackage with a lot of obstacles, as well as dirt and grime that would reach the cylinders easier if they were not set that high.
Why aren't the locos fitted with a brick arch? is that just a consequence of industrial types that they would only be going about an industry yard with access to coal? or some other reason? And did they have to remove the K1's brickarch, if it even had one to begin with
Hi Laurie, great video, keep them coming. Just a small question How do you get your drivers experiences for a gala at Whitwell and Reepham railway? Many thanks, BananaBond009
@@TheModellersMess For most railways, the process is simply to join up as a volunteer. All railways are a little different, but in general, you will have to demonstrate your skill set and be assessed by the senior staff there in charge of the relevant department. So, to become a driver if you already have plenty of driving experience, you would spend time on the loco as a cleaner to prove you understand the machine (usually they can tell by how comfortable you are on the loco), then do some turns firing, then driving. Once they are satisfied that you know what you're doing, they will give you the chance to be tested. There are also tests to cover your knowledge of the working rules of the line. Although Lawrie is pretty well known, he still has to go through the same process as other crew, however as with all experienced crew, it's a question of demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of how to handle a train and how well you understand the operating practices. If you don't need to learn it from scratch, you will progress faster but it's always worth keeping in mind that you only get that understanding by doing it, over and over again until it becomes second nature.

part of the fun of narrow gauge is well demonstrated in this video, locomotives doing 10 or 12mph, and sounding like they're doing 40 or 50.
Absolute joy to watch on a rainy Friday afternoon here in Kentucky... thank you Lawrie...
You're most welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video, great camera work and editing, great railway. Wish we had something like that down here in Australia
Thank you and thanks for watching.

Where in UK is this beautiful preserved railway located?
Near Tamworth, Staffordshire.
