  • What will you get from changing your barrel from a 600 mm to a 700 mm??
    In this video I will test the velocity in both barrels with the gun on the same settings.
    At the end of the video I will test the 700 mm barrel for accuracy on 100 m/109Yd.
    My reg is at 100 bar.
    Hammer at 2,6 (micro adjuster scale)
    Front valve: 3
    I hope that you will enjoy
    Best regards

    Great group and video, Peter!! This type of testing is extremely useful for us, so we can see the improvements before we spend our money on a new barrel. I live in the US, and dearly wish we would adopt the metric system. Much more logical. Again, great job!!

    Thank you for this video, I thought about ordering FX M3 600mm barrels in .177 or 700mm barrels, so they had a difference in muzzle velocity of about 20 m and convinced that 600mm will suffice. The accuracy at 100m is almost the same. Thank you very much👍

    Wow, I had no idea there were so many factors which can alter the POI, I wrongly assumed it would only be something like an external appendage, which could wobble. My reason for asking was, I have seen someone use a tiny tripod with the chronograph mounted on it, positioned where you had yours, so totally isolating the rifle & projectile from any contributing factors, or so I thought up until now.
    Your comments have led me to realise I now need a Torque Driver for all the fasteners. Thank you very much for the information, keep up the good work

    The barrel length does not change accuracy, only changes velocity. You can go for a higher velocities to shoot further, or tune down the gun shoot the same velocity you had with the 600mm in order to get a higher shot count. The gun needs to be tuned in order to get a smaller SD and better grouping.

    • @mikebalentine
      @mikebalentine 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well that is not entirely accurate since a much shorter barrel is impacted more with gun movement. But if you could fire without moving the gun at all (like in a vice, you are correct)

  • @hornyj1
    @hornyj1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    First of all thanks a lot for the great videos (not only this one) Peter!
    Notice how your group is spread vertically more than horizontally. That means the spread in your muzzle velocity is affecting the accuracy! But honestly it's a bit strange, you should be able to get velocity spread under 5 fps from FX Impact with no big effort. Remember that every barrel needs to be break in. You need to shoot 100-200 times from the barrel to smooth out imperfections in the barrel. Also don't change ammo too much. Especially different hardness/composition of the lead they are made from have an effect and the barrel needs another 3-10 shots to "get used to" the new ammo.
    If the velocity spread doesn't improve in next 100+ shots, you should try to play with the regulator pressure and hammer preload. Just try to increase the reg pressure and set hammer so it opens the valve for shorter period of time (should improve accuracy of slugs even more). If that doesn't help with the velocity spread, try the opposite.
    Don't clean your FX barrels unless the groups get worse over time!
    Have a great time shooting and be safe!

      Hi Jan
      Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences 🙂 They all make perfectly good sense!
      I have had difficoulties getting my spread down and after installing the Sekhmet it was clear that the reg was the problem being around 15 seconds to fill completely. So for the last two months my rifle has been to service. It should be on the way back to me with a new reg and a new liner (dont know why with the liner🤔)
      Your advise with the higher reg makes sense. Gerhard recently said the same, but since he is using the original transfer port he has to go high.
      When I just recieved the gun the spread was almost non exciting, so I know that it is possible, so when I get it back I hope that it will behave again 😃
      Thanks again for your input!
      Best regards

    Looks good mate! I wonder if you might benefit from indexing your liner and then using the harmonic tuner. It looks like your trailing off from upper left to bottom right, so maybe if you index your barrel just a touch, you might get those in a vertical line and then be able to clean it up further with the tuner. I have tried the KOs with my 600mm on my Crown, and they did not seem to like being shot at higher velocities. It was like a shotgun when I was shooting at 950-1000 fps, but then when I got into the 800s it started to get better. It was not great, but better. I need to do more work with them and I may be able to get them to group well.

      @VikingAirgunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pat
      I never thought about indexing the liner. Thanks for sharing that idea mate 🙂
      I want to get the tune as good as I can before using the barrel tuner. I have a cf barrel housing commin shortly, so there are still a few projects before, but it is comming 🙂
      I think that there are many sweetspots at different velocities. Recently got a Wildcat and I had that shooting well at 760 fps and again at 850fps.
      I wish I was better at tuning, but it is a proces - so thanks again for your input 🤗🤗

    Great group !! Is the vertical poi spread not resulting from the significant velocity spread? At 100m, I assume that a difference of 30 fps translates to vertical poi shift. If your average velocity is not to close to the plateau velocity for your reg pressure, maybe you can slightly increase your HST and see if that gives you a lower ES. In terms of ES, the sweet spot is usually just a few fps below the plateau velocity. But I'm sure you know that. Just let us know how you address this issue. As far as I remember, in his Power Tune video, M Dubber talks about longer barrels. You might find interesting clues in there.

    • @VikingAirgunner
      @VikingAirgunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Steph
      It makes really good sense with the vertical shift ☝️
      So far I have been focusing on the valve and I still believe that I can improve the tune by some fine adjusting. I have seen some changes in ES so not all done here.
      And with the ES being so much better in the 600 mm it could mean that I have turned the valve to far in for the 700 mm? 🤔 Valve closing to soon.
      I actually think that the M3 is capeable of doing an even better group - and thinking about my bench (a camping tsble) it would help to get a table that is rock solid 🤓

      @@VikingAirgunner I have the wheel at 15, the micro is at 2.9 and the valve at 4. The fps spread is practically non-existent ; between 967-970. So it's super puzzling that the accuracy is pretty poor, being a 3cm spread at a only 30m ? I don't think I need to turn up the regulator, because 970 fps with 85 bar keeps the system unstressed. Please excuse my ignorance but how much does the long appendage under the barrel affect accuracy

    • @VikingAirgunner
      @VikingAirgunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats a very good question! And actually a question that I should have thought about before shooting.
      It goes like this -
      Any change done to a gun will contribute to a change in the "vibration image" of the gun. So things like a new barrel or adding carbon fiber to the barrel like sleeves or a barrel housing. Those are some of the big things that will cause the vibrations to change quite alot.
      Then there are smaller things like a new lighter or heavier scope. Change in the mounts are also a factor.
      Then there are the small things and not things that I have my focus at, but I heard that some olympic shooters do. How much you tighten the screws on that gun....Im not to comment further on that, but just to give a picture of how far you can take it.
      As for your question-
      Yes there is change in vibrations by attaching that chronograph on a pole like this. But by removing the chrono from the barrel where some attach is, there is a huge difference. And by using carbon fiber pole like mine it dampens the vibrations even better.
      Any gun has vibrations and the beauty of it is that we can tune our guns to be in harmony so the changes that we do are evened out
      Best regards

      Hi man
      I theory, yes. The vibrations in the CF is much less than in the standard alu. I have never done an actual test on the subject and I would imagine that such a test would not show much difference.
      But I believe that shooting lots of groups the avarage group size would decrease, so this is why I have done the change on my 600 mm. And the longer the barrel the greater the effect - so CF on the way for my 700 mm aswell 😀

    Great video, I think there's a misconception about accuracy and length of barrels, for air rifles a longer barrel gives more power as the projectile as more runway to eccelarate, staying in the barrel longer, downside is any movement from shooter as a greater chance of transferring to projectile result in accuracy inconsistencies, shorter barrel projectile spends less time in barrel, more suited to off hand shooting

    Personally I think that with the impact you get better results when you work at high pressures, I do want to leave it at 990fps, I put the regulator at 160-170 bar which gives me more than 1040 fps, then I close the air flow to i get 990fps. This way I get the difference between shots to 1-3 fps , I like to work with high pressures because the power curve is more efficient, and there is less vibration when the air passage is more close. That's my opinion
    I have .30 cal

    • @VikingAirgunner
      @VikingAirgunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats a good point Tom!
      I really like the idea of turning down the reg to get more shots, but I might be too low at the moment...But with the quick adjustment system at 2,5 I dont think that it makes significently big vibrations.
      But maybe 10 bar more on the reg and a bit down on the hammer for me 😉
      I doubt that your slugs would go very fast with 110 bar on the reg 😂

    • @tomlpnexus
      @tomlpnexus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VikingAirgunner Of course, in .177 you don't need as much pressure because the weight of the ammunition is much lower. Good Sunday to you too.

      Its commin, its commin, I promise 😃
      Actually I have a grand test of many different liners. STX, STX Superior and both 500 mm, 600 mm and 700 mm, but its gonna be another couple of months, so I hope that you will be patient my friend 🤗

    Fastest was 20fps faster. Pcp needs to be properly tuned. That spread tells me something isn't running 100%

      Thanks for the comment on this rather old video - made me watch it again to remember making it.
      To answer your comment, you are SO right that something was off! I struggled more than you can ever imagine to control the spread on the 700 mm STX Superior liner. It seemed to work well with higher speeds, but since we know that higher doesnt have a good effect on accuracy, it was not the solution. Changing the liner into the heavy liner was☝️🤓
      Check out my newer videos for more facts on this.
      Conclusion after having used the STX Superior liner was that it was able to shoot some decent groups - but felt more like luck than skill!
      So for anyone reading this: AVOID the 700 mm STX Superior liner in 177 and go for the Heavy liner!
      Problem solved 😎

    The 600mm barrel lenght is more acuracy than 700mm

      DAMN!!! I was hoping to be called one 😂
      It is so satisfying to get those groups. What ammo are u using?

    U need 150 bar to close that valve faster a try it

      My experience with high reg preasures is that it will result in bigger spread and less accuracy. It might be different in other calibers.

      High reg and low hammer , helps the valve close fast I heard many times so this stops Any air distortion for the pellet when it leaves the barrel

      @@ptescreen18 I am aquinted with the theory but my in my experience it does not give better accuracy - in fact the oposite.
      I always test theroies.
