I will ALWAYS be an advocate for Physical Media. When it comes to comics, movies, and games, physical will ALWAYS be better. Ive found myself buying alot of digital games recently, but the only reason I do is when they are EXPONENTIALLY cheaper (45-80% off) because in that case, it would be stupid to pay 3 times the price just to have it physically. For Example i was able to get the ENTIRE Return to Arkham TRILOGY (digitally) for 5 DOLLARS. Keep in mind this included EVERY DLC and skin for Arkham knight aswell. That was too good to pass up. I feel like Digital Media should be a substitution, or a secondary source of media, but it seems like its becoming more and more main stream every year. A fear I really have is that 15-20 years down the line (once i finally convince a girl to fall in love with me lmao) once I have kids, there wont be any comic shops anymore. Movie theaters will no longer be a thing. There will be no more game stops, or game stores. EVERYTHING will literally be inside, and digitally. I wont be able to have that fun with my kids. I really hope this doesnt happen but it looks like thats where we're headed. This is why I cherish every trip to the comic shop, and i try to keep all of my stuff in condition because I fear there will be a time where you cant get them anywhere else.

The problem with physical media is that it’s taking up storage that can easily be used for something far more important. What if your physical copy breaks or deteriorates to the point where it’s unresponsive or you lose it? None of these are a problem if you go digital.

I've been saying this for a good while. A lot of games, shows and films have a very good message and have a lot to say about our world and society. Newer stuff gets locked behind a subscription paywall with no physical copy.
Then you have the likes of Ubisoft taking digital content already payed for. It's a really shady practice.
I'd rather own a physical copy so companies and hackers can't just yoink everything digitally and mark up the price just to sate their own greed.

As an avid gamer and collector, buying physical media is always my number 1 choice to purchase anything I want added to my collection. There are only 3 instances where I can safely recall that I've bought something digitally as a choice due to as a last minute resort or if it was a cheaper option. Or the game was a digital only release (i.e. Travis Strikes Again at the time). But in almost every other instance when trying to buy a video game, I've always go for paying it physically rather than digitally. I own the product, nobody can mess with it, I can trade it in for another game, lend it over to someone, etc.

  • @kylebutler9281

I agree with a lot of this. It's very obviously easier for companies to push digital over physical. It takes way less effort.

I love both physical and digital media because they both have a ton of advantages, but there's nothing like having a shelf full of your favorite games/movies. I love making my game collection bigger and being able to show off all the box art, digital media just can't compete with that.

Physical copies of media are an absolute MUST for me. I flat refuse to let companies even have the REMOTE possibility of taking something away from me, essentially stealing it, after I'd paid the cash for it. I flat refuse to rely on internet connections to watch my movies or play my games too.
As a collector myself, I'm ok with my games and movies taking up real estate. At least if the internet ever goes down in my area, I know I'll still have access to all my stuff. Unlike the "pure digital" shills. What on earth are they gonna do if, God forbid, they get bad internet? Or forget passwords? Or the service their using simply yanks their media from the service?
Way too many unknowns for me to rely on the internet for my gaming/movie entertainment. No thanks.

I'm a diehard physical movie collector but for games, I'm digital. The reason being is for games, it's the exact same product whether you get it on disc or digital. Further more, the disc has become just a license key to unlock the digital version. Games don't even play off the disc anymore. It's just an installer method. I'm not happy about that but it's just reality. With movies, you are getting a better quality product on disc and you aren't beholden to streaming services to carry the movie you want. For older games that actually play off the hardware (360/PS3 and before), I highly favor and encourage physical. For modern games, you are basically shelf collecting.

Fact is, digital makes the publishers more money. Pure digital is the end goal, and there's no stopping it.
PC got there first. We've been all digital for a while now. Its not bad on PC. Ive had my Steam account for 19 years and I can still play a 19 year old Steam purchase on modern hardware just fine. Digital purchases on console have no such guarantee. Backwards compatibility is not guaranteed, and stores just shut down when companies are done with them. Nintendo has launched and killed 4 different digital platforms in the same amount of time as I've had my Steam account.

In regards to movies and TV shows, if you were allowed to download and achieve the files, Digital media might have worked. However the providers; iTunes, Google Play and others only allow you to stream the product. What is needed is a Digital Ownership Rights Legislation passed to force providers to allow consumers to be able download, Achieve and play those products that they have legally purchased. The current policies that are bent towards the Corporations and Streaming Services will only push people more and more towards Piracy.

As someone who is into the most volatile form of media on the planet, anime, physical is an absolute must. You think licenses to movies, tv shows and music are a mess, pfft please. Licenses to anime series/movies expire at light speed resulting in shows vanishing in the blink of an eye. Not to mention since anime is foreign the digital versions (provided they're not mainstream) are often significantly more expensive then their physical counterparts. Hell just look at the drama surrounding Evangelion.

Fire Emblem was a physical box of stuff with a download code for the game and that game is no longer available to buy in the eShop for no good reason. There needs to be a second hand digital market. Steam has been amazing for just picking up games on a deal. No other console even comes close to the price cuts for games. However they may change that in the future.
That is why I think monopolies on digital content sales and ownership need to be diversified into second hand markets. If you own a digital game you should be able to post the key for it for sale as ownership rights through a second hand listing.

It's not a conspiracy, it's just a logical progression to increase profits for the media companies. You explained it yourselves, less money on manufacturing, retailers, more control. But on the flip side, there is a convenience factor for the consumer, one that outweighs the positives of physical. The best thing is for digital media to be "liberated" through laws, so a game can be transfered to a disc if you want, lent to other people, revert to older versions etc. If I'm not mistaken, like on itunes where you can buy the MP3 of a song but you can do what you want with it.

Its more than the companies wanting to make more money, by cutting out the physical production of games.
Its to change the paradigm of how we consumers interact with the products we consume. They want to change video games, and other industries like the auto industry to more of a subscription based economy, where we own none of it, and just pay a subscription fee to rent and pay for the privilege of playing them.
Complete control and have us lemmings be happy that we own nothing and dont deserve more.
For cars they tried to make everyone buy electric , and have things like heated seating and other features be subscription based, where they can just code out these features anytime you dont pay your fees with over the air updates.
They've turned a large portion of the American public into beta male cucks, and those ppl are more than happy to let these giant corporations control every aspect of their lives. Watch the movie DEMOLITION MAN, to get an idea of why we live in Clown World 2023.

Physical is tangible and has potential value in the future. Digital comes and goes. Digital value comes from the potential sale of an account which is usually frowned upon. Digital value comes from convenience and space saving.
The thought that for Xmas my sons get a code on a bit of paper is the most depressing feeling ever.
Both physical and digital should exist together in harmony. There should be no 'versus' perception.
I will never pay full price for digital only. I want the whole game on the physical media please thank you.
We should all strive for as much choice as possible because it's makes sure we get the best for the price. The thought that we pay more for effectively less is baffling to me.

This is why i have never bought a game on steam. And many of you will make excuses for why steam is ok, but the business model is not ok. Same with blu ray. I rejected blu ray bc it initially required you to update your player due to heavy handed drm. Ive only started collecting blu ray discs now that this is no longer an issue and they are all available for a discount.
**Having to** use extra software from a publisher to play a game you have paid for is not ok. Im fine with not having a disc as long as i have my own local copy of the content that does not require anything but my own pc to run.
Companies are profit driven and have received the wrong message which is that the majority of gamers do not understand or value ownership. Therefore it is ok to write off older gamers especially since they will be replaced over time by younger customers who don't know better.
The whole industry is turning into a subscription based model where there is no physical media. If you are not willing to do without content, the industry has no motivation to try and appeal to you.
    Do not be a simp.

Two things about subscriptions like Netflix and Xbox Gamepass that bother me, aside from content being modified or removed, is the price keeps going up on these services and people are being brainwashed to say games on Gamepass or Nintendo switch online are "free" but they're not free. If I don't pay for a subscription i cant play those games.

Good luck with seeing your digital games being removed in the future. Like PS 5 is doing with deleting the many movies and people don’t get refund. I'm just not interested in investing any meaningful amount of time or money in goods that can be altered or confiscated at any time with no notice. Games are even more egregious; at least films come mostly finished. "AAA" games are being shat out that need multiple 100gb updates to get them over the finishing line months or even years after you purchased them.
It's just a bad God damn deal for consumers, man. It really sucks.

In a way we're unironically getting to that point in terms of massive companies buying up the housing market and then making people pay for it like a subscription model by only renting houses. It's becoming a huge problem in the US at least. Whole thing is messed up and nuts.

Really enjoyed this conversation. While I prefer physical games, the PS5 physical disks are just a key and you have to download it off the Internet. All the disk does now is verify that you own the digital game. I have some physical and some digital PS5 games. But my concern with PS5 physical is that if they stop support for the game, you can't download it anyways. So either way we are screwed. Thus why I choose to go digital from here on out on the PS5. I still needed a new Blue-ray player anyway so I bought the physical one for that reason. It wasn't until I got the first two physical games that I figured that out.
Plus Nintendo Switch is slowly going that route too. While in the begging of the Switch lifecycle it made sense to go physical since the SD cards at the time were expensive (1TB one at $400-$500 in 2017) now it is cheaper for that tech and go digital. Some switch games have a day one patch as well. Even with the new "Switch 2" I feel like Nintendo will follow Sony and Microsoft with the day one patch and download everything from the internet and it won't be on the cartridge.
The only reason I see physical staying even with PS6 Xbox, and Nintendo "Switch 2" is the fact that they still need the physical retailers to carry their consoles. Will it slowly die out? I can see it in the future, but at the same time, that is where impulse purchases happen for consoles and word of mouth develops so you can sell more systems.
I would love to see you two do a video on the upcoming Alan Wake 2 and how that is a digital only release. I believe most of your thoughts and opinions digital only are well stated in this video but that was a huge internet breaking thing that would warrant a separate video.

It’s a capitalism problem. These companies want to make their money but cut out as much overhead as possible. If you can make the same or more off of digital but have no manufacturing or movement costs then that’s the money move.

Probably about 9/10 of them do. It depends on the game though and the effort put into it.

I do want to make an argument to not being able to find the steel book of Indiana Jones for example. The Jones movies are widely available in DVD box sets, blue ray, VHS and such. So sure, you couldn’t find what you wanted necessarily, but you absolutely can settle for less in a way and get it on a more available format. I understand how it can be annoying for some serious collectors and whatnot. But those films are definitely not scarce by any means.

Pre ordering isn't always a bad thing. It depends on the developers track record for the most part and how development of the game is going up to release.
