"it costs you virtually nothing to continue consuming content. Just your 20s, just your young adult life." was a quote that I was not expecting to hear and is going to haunt me, rattling around in my brain as I continue to do the same things. Great video btw!
Fr, the whole part about how addictive & habit forming media consumption is totally hit the nail on the head. We waste so much time in our lives scrolling through social media every day but even though we all know it’s bad for us, it’s so difficult to stop. I think this video is my reminder to log off for the day and spend more time in the real world lol
Oh no, it's absolutely rational LMFAOOOOO This is why I encourage people that are into physical media to learn how to make bootlegs, especially when it comes to cassettes and CDs; unless it's LED printed many times you can easily make those in your own home, it's how all of my favorite indie labels started, just making bootlegs
I get that when something old becomes rare it will go up in price. But it drives me crazy that stuff from my lifetime is getting priced into the hundreds of dollars. Like, Pokémon Black 2 is not a collectors’ item, it sold nearly 8 million copies (that’s actual number, rounded up for ease of typing). Even if half those were destroyed by children, that leaves 4 million copies still in existence. WHY DOES IT COST $200?!?!?!
Utilize your public library! I go to them when I travel because usually there are little book/cd/record sale places you can buy donated stuff for cheap. They were there when I was a kid (all the way back in the 90s) and most libraries have them! I've gotten probably 8 or more "mainstream" top albums at my local library in the past couple months including Beyonces BDay, Paul Simon's Graceland and also some obscure shit I already loved like Deodato! All 50c! I also grab stuff I've never heard of for blind listens - I haven't been disappointed yet! Obviously thrift stores are good too! But the library is amazing! And you can check out CDs! Also idk about the rest of America but WA state doesn't have late fees anymore
As streaming subscription services increase in their price and number, I hope we see a DVD renaissance similar to how books have had a comeback. I miss bonus features and falling asleep to a DVD menu.
I honestly think that it will happen to a certain degree. I think we will start to remember that there is value in owning physical media and art/DVDs of Shrek. I also have an ipod classic that I think I might start using again.
Already started for me. No Netflix, less TH-cam, I use Spotify for one podcast, otherwise it’s dvds and library books and CD’s for me. In my adult life I have not listened to music without ads until now
Not to mention that most libraries also have a glut of online media (I know the whole “no streaming” thing is kinds the point, but I want to point this out) like, just go on your library’s website and you’ll find all manner of audiobooks, comics, albums, etc are available for free with your library card in digital format. It’s honestly crazy
@EilleenCarrion You don't have a local library? That sucks dog, I'm so sorry. You could always contact your local government and express the desire/ usefulness of a local library for your area. If you keep bringing it up into the right spaces you have a decent chance to get it genuinely considered. Local govs will often allow for citizens to weigh in on what they would like to change in the area, but most don't participate. Put in for a library. You could also go to a town hall meeting if you don't mind speaking directly to someone. You can directly let them know that you think a library would be a good asset to add to your community. If spitballing in front of your city council is too nerve wracking, I'm sure there are online resources from other libraries and educational advocates that have prepped presentations for why your municipality should have a public library. If you don't want to deal with it at all you may be able to contact a library/educational organization and tell them that you'd like to have a public library. Then they will go through all the trouble of lobbying, campaigning, and fundraising to get a public library in your area. You've got options. It might take some time, but it'll be worth it. Also check nearby towns for libraries too.
Some libraries have a library of things, so you could rent players. For things like vhs they probably should keep it at the library so it doesn't get stolen.
I spent some time last year off the grid, and my only media was a CD player, books, and board/card games that I played with friends. After coming back home, it was SHOCKING to me how quickly I spiraled back into constant stimulation and media consumption. I'm currently back to using a flip phone to try and gain some control back, and it is hard to opt out of noise and choose silence instead.
this happens to me too! i can go months where i block all my social media and then the nanosecond I decide to unblock it I go back to scrolling for 5 hours a day
Thats because you do it wrong. Just like restricting all sweet things. If you do it and let yourself have a cheat day, you will end up eating a pile of sweets in an hour. Because you didn't actually gained control over yourself. The control is when you have a phone and can leave it laying on a table for hours. Not when you have to physically remove it from yourself.
i kinda did the same thing in a way. i stopped being online so much and read more and went outside more and what i noticed was, if you wanna be a legit adult you really can't be online or playing video games because it just takes up so much of your time. i got a lot done when i wasn't online or gaming but then the husband wanted to play an online game again and now nothing is getting done in the house.
this video had a weirdly big impact on me? kinda opened my eyes to really how much time i spend mindlessly consuming. definitely gonna have to implement no scrolling before 9am!
Just started medical school last week and this vid could not have come out at a better time. It felt like my brain getting a well-earned massage, thanks man keep them coming!
I'm so happy you did this challenge for yourself! I've been without wifi at home, by choice, for over six months and I have gathered a bookshelf of DVDs and Blurays that I watch. I still watch TH-cam (obviously) but only for an hour a day and I engage with the hobbies and media that I do choose the interact with so much more. Love to see you doing this kind of out of the box stuff 🙌🏻
My husband and I were foster parents for awhile and every worker and kid that came into our house kept saying how quiet it was. Took us awhile to realize that it's because we don't keep any background noise on. We only turn on or hit play on something when we want to watch/listen to that specific thing. But the kids were so unnerved by the lack of noise, we had to keep a radio playing in their room at night or they wouldn't sleep.
Such an excellent video! Excess media consumption is such a new issue and I think you got right down to the heart of it. We're so uncomfortable with silence, even though proper space for your mind to rest is one of the more important things to keep it healthy.
That's the thing, people aren't resting their senses, overloading them because of media the whole time, including me in fact! That's why there's an increase of people unable to fall asleep in night because it's the ONLY time there aren't any physical distractions so obviously, it's the only time their brain gets to think. I do believe part of the reason some people like me are media obsessed is so that they don't get reminded of their thoughts, the reality they're in which they're ruining more by their media addiction, which id why they feel horrible in the night because they can't properly shut their minds off. Which is why I'm trying to implement at LEAST one hour where I'm not being exposed to any type of media, be it YT, movies, music etc
One of the habit forming rules is making it seamless. I actively make things inconvenient. Especially when it comes to buying things online, never remember my credit card info. Put as many clicks and actions as you can between you and the thing *they* try to make easier. When it comes to shows and movies, I manually download each thing. I don't do automatic music streaming because it can't figure out my tastes. I did fall for TH-cam's recommendations at some point. I used to view TH-cam exclusively from my subscriptions page, boycotting the home page. Sadly I got ensnared by it, marking like 90% of the suggestions as "not interested" in a futile attempt to teach TH-cam my taste.
That's good! I usually never have my phone or laptop remember my card info so I have to manually type it in. That extra step helps in making me think again. I've tried to avoid YT's algorithm but I think it's just ended up being the one area where I don't care what it does. I'm on YT so much so whatever haha
hey, i really like your perspective on media consumption! i just wanted to say, i use an extension called 'unhook' and it can block certain parts of youtube for you. may be useful :)
I do this too! Or at least I don't save my card info on anything, although I do it more because of security reasons rather than because I have a bad spending habit
This is honestly such a great idea! Mindful consumption is so important. I’m also guilty of being mindlessly addicted to constant stimulation/having constant background noise (like constantly listening to youtube videos while doing other things 😅) it’s so hard to break the habit of mindless consumption
I genuinely cannot imagine doing this for even one day and this video is definitely making me consider how bad that is. I even have an advantage having a job where I cannot be on my phone for 8.5 hours a day. I think it’s inspired me to try to start small and go one day with no TikTok (most used app in my screen time) and go from there.
First off, well done! This video, this idea, has brought a lot of light to some of the “mental lethargy” that I feel in my life, along side that NEED to consume some form of media. Rather I’m showering, working, doing inside/outside chores, driving, and even going to sleep, I am listening to something. And of course, when I can’t find anything “interesting” to listen to, I slump to social media to get my fix. If that isn’t interesting, then I feel or hear that “lack of noise” which becomes defining as the floods of thought race through my mental pathways. That leads me to replaying that random conversation I had during my junior year of high school in 2008 and all of the things I would say now if I could go back in time. Needless to say, this video has been positively thought provoking and I will be working on greatly reducing my constant stream and grip on media. Some will be to try and use more physical media, and some will just be to let my mind become quiet, and try and let the thoughts that come racing to my mind make their way and pass through, in the hope and goal of finding an peace that I don’t think I’ve had in a while, but have been making myself too busy to notice. Thanks, Cary!
Thank you so much, that is super cool to hear! I'm really glad this video was in some way insightful. I hope, you're able to make more space to be present to yourself!
I'll try to convince my boyfriend to implement this when we start living together! In my country its fairly easy to find bootleg CDs and we like reading a whole lot, I'm optimistic that we'll both enjoy it and see great results on our mental health ❤
LOL - this is fantastic. Doing two media/entertainment things at once is such a real problem! On the physical media tangent, I recently saw a meme about how the DVDs and CDs your family happened to own as a kid ended up weirdly shaping your childhood, bc they were always there, so you consumed them over and over (since streaming didn't exist!) So in elementary school you may have been weirdly obsessed with Ghostbusters or The Princess Bride or Billy Joel since it was your ~ family library ~. Also, as an elder Millennial, I can confirm that your CD choices are A++. You didn't mention Mellon Collie after the beginning -- did you like it??
Really cool video, liked and subscribed. As someone who has ADHD, bipolar, and struggles with disassociation, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what it does to us to have everything we identify with and “use” daily to be so non-physical. And how fried our dopamine receptors have to be. Everyone’s favorite items are essentially the same, because they’re infinite- they’re our phones, our computers. They’re anything we want them to be at the tip of our fingers. Having grown up almost entirely digitally, I no longer find this abundance exhilarating. It feels meaningless, like being unable to die. For all the massive amounts of media I’ve consumed online, I’ve never touched any of it with my hands or been seen with it in public like you would carrying a book. People have rarely seen it on my coffee table and struck a conversation over any of the hundreds of thousands of youtube videos I’ve watched, and no doubt, loved. I do not savor the information I intake anymore, I just feed this endless hunger, because what is stopping me from consuming more? I really resonated with not valuing silence. I come from a workaholic family and struggle with mindfulness, anxiety. I had no idea silence had benefits. I sound silly now. I’d love a more in-depth shelf tutorial- I’m thinking I might need a physical media shelf too. ❤
You should do the same thing but instead of a shelf you have to only consume physical media from your local library... you can use the shelf as a way to limit what you bring home. Also try driving without music etc...that Might be interesting to see what you experience. But not when you're going on a road trip.
this is such an interesting challenge. i've tried giving myself "media lists" for the month, but i always cave and give myself heaps of options. using a small shelf is a great idea!
Great video! What you said about always feeling like you have to do two things at once and always needing stimulation and a distraction is so true. I've been wanting to disconnect more from always being plugged in, and this seems like a nice experiment. I may try it myself on a smaller scale.
Also, this is a small thing, but your editing style and narration felt very true to yourself. A lot of videos like this (even from huge TH-camrs, frankly) feel like they're always forcing a certain kind of editing, writing, or narrating style, which you completely avoid IMO. Really great pacing and timing, no forced jokes, memes, etc.
Think in Park killed me, I laughed so hard because I didn't see that coming 😭 and you with the tinfoil hat, I can't. I love your videos so much. I listen to vinyl and it's always like a ceremony to get the vinyl, wash it (I am a nerd, I have a mashine for that), putting the vinyl on, sitting down and switch sides in between. It's so nice, getting lost in music and REALLY listening to the music. Without doing anything else.
„Not listening to a podcast while folding laundry feels like a waste“ Me while wlking home from the bus while watching / listening to this while also playing pokemon go: pff, couldn’t be me!
This is something I've actually been thinking about a lot lately. Like at work it's easy for me to just get on reddit or something. I can't listen to anything, but reddit helps keep me entertained. And not too long ago I was talking to someone about music, and I rarely ever actually listen to an album now. Not even just older ones I've heard hundred of times. But it used to be a single would drop, them the album, and whole I would listen to that single a lot, it wouldn't take long before I just start listening to the whole thing. And part of me has wanted to get back into physical media for music. And unfortunately with certain issues in my personal life, it's hard to find time to do a whole lot like read. But I want to get more into that and stop watching as much TH-cam. I'm just gonna take this video as a sign I need to. Maybe it's time to take a step back a bit. Everything feels like shit, and some of that is things I can't control at the moment, but some of it is just me doing nothing and wasting away my time. Also, thought it was funny to see you go into Every Day Music. Hello from a fellow Portlander!
I've bern doing something similar to this. I deleted a lot of my social media accounts, started calling friends instead of texting, and reading books rather than listening to videos. I feel more mindful and it still have a ways to go, but it feels nice. The Eastward music is a nice touch too! 👌
This really appeals to me. I feel like the selection of content at the start is a great idea. I find that I waste time consuming content that I really don't care about, when I have a stack of books I am dying to read. But the internet content is far easier to ingest, and so that gets my attention. This is something i want to change. I feel inspired.
I feel like the CIA agent monitoring my phone usage knew I needed this video this week; I just started taking social media breaks (entire days where I don’t open any social media app), so this mindfulness video really resonated with me! I hope pivoting back to physical media is more of a trend, and they bring back DVDs!! I want to own so many shows in a physical form and just can’t!!
Just bumped into your channel and so glad TH-cam recommended. I’d say whilst physical media is more expensive unlike streaming you own the media ‘for life’. With streaming services and TH-cam you don’t own the music, if Spotify, Netflix or TH-cam want to remove the music from the platform or block your account for whatever reason you no longer have access. With physical CDs and media once you’ve bought it it’s yours for life, bearing in mind you keep it safe / keep care of it.
this video made me realize that I miss it when I didn't really have internet access as a teen, and i enjoyed music more, I read books more, and I was way more creative with my hobbies
As a 1992 person I remember buying a cd and listening to it over and over again because I didn’t have other cds (or new cds to listen to) and then I would just get to know the lyrics and obsess about the band/singer. Same with magazines, I would read every single article from cover to cover. I would consume things more intensely and enjoy them. Nowadays we have so many options that we don’t really know what to look at! Our attention drives from media to media without actually consuming them. I miss these old days.
Thank you very much for your video! It's so well crafted, I just love green screen people in some random backgrounds, it's the shit, haha I live in Russia, so we don't have have such a thriving selection of non-digital music sources here. No CD stores or anything, it's all online. But you surely did inspire me to implement more books and what not into my routine. Thanks again 🙏
I really appreciate you making this and sharing your experience. I graduated recently and have been unable to get a job all summer. Being unemployed is rough and I basically filled my summer with mindless media consumption because it's all I felt I could do. But lately I've found myself completely uninterested in TH-cam and Instagram, but yet I still gravitate towards it because I've made it a habit. Although I can't afford buying CDs, I'd like to get an MP3 player and be more conscious of music consumption at least.
Here’s some things I learned from doing this: I actively think of more fun hobbies or ways to spend my evenings, like a listening to a record and reading a new book, or how about I crochet this cool idea I just had? Rather than wait till I’m mentally drained and just watch what the algorithm shows me/or do the same old hobbies because I feel more tired way more often; I found myself taking care of my pets more giving them little treats, grooming my dogs; finding more satisfaction in daily things like I just got this task done without listening to anything, I deserve a tiny fun break! It makes you feel way more accomplished and like a normal person; it’s easier to make lots more goals you’ve been wanting to make since you have more time to think and consider what you need to change, and it’s a domino effect of good habits! It’s good for your brain to have that quiet time as well :) Doing this alongside other people and seeing people try this out makes me so excited! Let’s all use more physical media/books and see how much we can learn and grow rather than be content with the constant media distractions- I feel so hopeful!
Excellent video. I actually have been doing something similar for the past few years where I choose a month out of the year where I don’t go on social media, and during those months, I notice that my relationship with media feels less mindless. Instead of just throwing on a TH-cam video or thoughtlessly browsing Twitter, I would read a book or watch a movie without simply playing it in the background while did something else. I’ve noticed that the media I consumed during those months left a greater impact on me than the media I consumed throughout the rest of the year. I’d highly recommend anyone take a month, a week, or even a day to limit your media consumption habits and learn to appreciate what you have.
Oh my goodness Cary, this is THE BEST video I've seen and listened to on youtube this month! You are definitely contributing meaningful content to the platform 😊 Laughed multiple times at "physically", as well as "Thinkin Park" and the square 4:3 DVDs- which I have a few of those as well! 😂 Yes please to building stuff for us if you feel up to it- that shelf was a great idea! Thanks for the reminder to read Atomic Habits- it's on my shelf... I bought it around Cyber Monday or so... but I have been reading books at least! Aside from youtube, I'm not subscribed to any streaming services, I don't watch shows, and I'll watch like 2, maybe 3 movies a year... on DVD... on my old laptop lol. I do sign out of youtube on weekends for a digital detox- but will only go back on there if I NEED to look up something urgent such as a home or appliance related repair or something like that. I definitely enjoy playing youtube videos while doing chores or projects, as those tasks can be far more tedious and sometimes miserable without that boost of stimulation and entertainment lol Keep up the phenomenal work Cary- you are one of the coolest people in the world! May the snail be with you! 😃
Thank you so much, that’s really good to hear! :) Dang that’s impressive!! That detachment is so important to maintain when technology always bids us to be dependent on it.
I wish I could engage with silence again, but as someone with pretty bad tinnitus, I really need some noise in the background at all times. Loud rain, wind in the trees and cars in the distance are as close to a silence I can handle. Went into a cave a while ago and it was awesome, but my god the tinnitus was killing me. Look after your ears kids
I did not expect you to get that much mileage out of that shelf. Well done, sir. Edit : As long as you're just experimenting, try a week of sleeping in a hammock instead of a bed. Changed mah life.
I really enjoyed this video! I think I'll try it for myself. I'm definitely addicted to music and youtube... My brain feels like a static mess:( I'd recommend taking advantage of your local library if you want to experience more physical media on a budget. You can experience all kinds of media before deciding on a purchase. I think another thing that might have been nice to include on the shelf could have been a creative hobby, like drawing, crocheting, etc... I think having something that requires physical engagement is not just entertaining, but very fulfilling too. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much, I hope this video was helpful! I totally agree about including a creative practice. That is one thing I didn't really have time to touch on in the video but consuming less so you can create and contribute more is one thing I've been thinking a lot about as well.
Libraries rock! I’ve been reading The Stormlight Archives (a popular fantasy series) through my local library. And they’ve got their stuff set up on Libby, so I can read e-books through the library as well. It’s been really helpful for building the habit of reading more. I’ve always loved reading, but I blow through books so fast I’d go broke if I bought a new book every time I wanted to read!
@@thatonepossum5766 Stormlight Archives is awesome! Had to comment because I've been a fan of Sanderson since Words of Radiance came out. Hopefully you're enjoying it
@@Stumblingthroughlife I definitely am. Just finished Dawnshard yesterday, and am a couple pages into Rhythm of War. I enjoyed Dawnshard enough that I’m thinking about buying my own copy.
I did something similar in 2022 when I used a flip phone for a few months. It really helped me focus. I’m always tempted to do it again. Also the irony of me watching this in the background while I did my job is not lost on me Thanks for sharing!!
being in portland i'm a bit disappointed you didn't pick up any elliott smith albums!! aha, mostly kidding. great video, i loved the part where you explained how it feels when you're quitting something and your brain hasn't caught up yet.
I started taking an hour walk every day in early july- no music just me enjoying the silence. It's literally the best part of my day. Since I started doing this in early july my mental and physical health has never been better.
The thing about physical media is that you own it( unless you get it from the Library). But you would own it. When you stream you don't own the content. Also when you own it you can go back and watch it over and over and not have the possibility of it disappearing from the streaming service.
For anyone who doesn't know, you can ask your local library for audiobooks most likely! And it doesn't have to be digitally on Libby. My library offers CDs of the audio books! And some libraries might even still offer tape versions!
I just starting trying doing this for September and I’ve absolutely loved reading more, and learning in a more efficient way and not feel so brain dead or tired- it’s been wonderful, thanks for making it!
This past month I reduced my video consumption to less than half in favour of _reading_ , with an older Kobo e-reader. No colour, no audio capability, just epub texts. Also not locked into an Amazon content *leasing* scam. Why, just today I drove down to my local public library to get a card that would let me "borrow" ebooks from them via the OverDrive system.
This is my first time stumbling upon your channel and I instantly subscribed after finishing this video. I definitely want to try to take a look at my social media/media habits now. Can’t wait to watch more videos!
For one week I couldn’t use Bluetooth in my car because my connector thingy broke, so I decided to use my car CD player. I had this Adele 21 album from a while ago that I never listened to. Then for a whole week I listened to that CD and actually listened to all the songs all the way through and found a new appreciation for Adele and that album.
coming back from a mostly unplugged vacation gave me new motivation to unplug my daily life. i think this video's concept is a great starting point for that thank you for the inspiration
I'm in my mid 30s and I have mostly moved on from physical media (still got vinyls lol), but the important thing is to mindfully consume. I maintain a music library and seek out the discographies of artists I like, I explore artists they've collaborated with as well as Various Artist compilations they're on and get new artists from there. There is a wealth of music out there and while yes, sometimes I just need a 'focus' playlist, engaging with the music I consume is very satisfying and meaningful. I do watch TH-cam when playing games but there's only so much of Rimworld and Crusader Kings 3's soundtracks I can listen to lmao.
Just here to say that this inspired me to try the same experiment (on a much smaller scale - one week) and that was enough to see noticeable differences in my focus and ability to single task (not to mention mood!). Love the vid!
I was born in 1985 and this was the way I grew up. Had to choose a CD (or cassette) carefully because it would be the only one I'd get for a week or two, sometimes longer. So listening to it over and over while looking at the liner notes and artwork was how to get the most out of it. Would usually get a comic book once a week and a novel every month or so. Then there was television and radio. We had cable so there was a variety of shows to choose from. Even then if you wanted to you could have some sort of media bombarding your thoughts every hour between radio and TV
If you can access one- maybe use your local library for CDs, books, and DVDs! Plenty of libraries also offer access to virtual media (video streaming, ebooks, etc.) that might also be more convenient than the physical versions! Libraries are my beloved.
Im curious about if you sing or find ways to entertain yourself when it’s quiet. Great video btw! I find that when I can’t listen to music or I’m taking a little break from streaming music I end up singing when at home. If not for media - Live music! When I eliminate digital stimuli and there’s no one around I talk out loud to myself as a way to process my thoughts- audio journaling. Like writing, it helps iron out all the wrinkled lines of thought bunched up in my brain. I think creativity is part of that, taking the internal and making it external. As for listing our habits, It’s interesting to see which habits my parents effectively helped establish like brushing teeth that I went through phases of solidifying as my own habits by reinforcing ease of use. This became more obvious when I started living with people who have different habits- ie people who don’t brush every night. Thank you for the insight! I’ve been forced to be offline a lot recently due to some new chronic health issues and finding ways to sit in the quiet has been tough. This was helpful in trying to reframe entertainment ❤️ especially when going outside isn’t a great option (Florida Summer)
This is my first vidoe of yours and im amazed you only have 16k. This video was great! I struggle with not having consistent stimulation and use social media as a cruch. Another good reminder to myself to take a break!
my issue with physical media as someone who avidly collects Dvds and Vinyls is that they are more expensive now especially being from a small country that you can only really get them from shops selling dvds for +10 and vinyls for 20-40
In my undergrad rn, and just before watching this video, I finished what's basically the Christian equivalent of "Atomic Habits" for one of my classes: John Mark Comer's "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry." As a heavy media consumer, this video felt just like the cherry on top to the perfect detox of all my worst habits. I'm going to start trying this now with everything else I've done! Limit myself with media like it's an RE4 inventory. Thanks so much for this video man, God bless.
On the topic of the money spent, Everyday Music and Memory Den are for hipsters and tourists and are ridiculously overpriced. You could have gotten everything you bought for much cheaper at a small local charity thrift shop. Like I get it if they’re convenient locations for you but there are plenty of other less trendy places to shop near downtown. Also, the library exists, and they rent CDs and DVDs in addition to books. Love the idea of being more mindful with your media consumption, but you don’t need to pay a premium for the ~aesthetic experience~
21:06 ,Thank you for not being like the others, I thank you so much. I really love the internet, I love what it has done for me and it’s endless potential for good is awesome but so often people don’t seem to understand that the internet isn’t shit because of what it is, it’s shit because of how it’s used by big companies with the sole intent to keep you on the app longer because that’s how they make money. Anything in the hands of someone with money to gain from it means it’s potential will be rinsed out of it for saleability instead.
One of my favorite things to do during lockdown was play minecraft with a podcast in the background... honestly I don't regret that bc it was awesome but in general I want to be more like in this video in my day to day. I want to be comfortable with quiet again
This was such a fun watch! Great idea to limit yourself to a confined space of items as well. This is a good reminder to get back to my no social media days. I feel so much better taking a day off every once in awhile.
One point i wanna make that everyone seems to forget about: Yes, you paid more for those cds, but are they gonna be, in the blink of an eye, if Spotify suddenly goes bankrupt bc of a bad decision out of the many they already did, GONE? Ok, "that won't happen!", ¿What if you stopped paying the subscription cuz you broke out of the blue? Or simply can't afford that luxury anymore? SILENCE. That's what happens. You don't own allthat music, you are just basically paying monthly rent for it, and once you stop paying, all of that playlists and stuff behind a paywall, boom, gone. And i ain't talking about Spotify specifically, i'm talking about all streaming services, and steam pay-to-have-a-permit-to-play-this service. Nobody is gonna inherit your beloved game save, the one you played for hs on end and dedicated all your free time to, bc you loved that game. The fact that all of us don't actually *own* anything after pouring our money into it is devastating to me. I discovered my favorite music bc of my brother and sister old cds and could hear them in my darkest moments of my teen angst years thanks to an mp3 someone gifted me on one of my bdays bc i love mp3s and they endure way more hs of listening to music than all my cellphones. And i can look back on it, fondly, whenever i want, even if both parts of my family tree that gave it to me, hate me now. Let that sink in.
Adding because it's tangentially related: your local library probably carrys DVDs, blu-rays, games, music, etc. in addition to books. You get that same connection to physical media, plus you don't need to buy anything.
boy howdy, i think this video just inspired me to do a "social media detox" of my own in September. I've already set time restrictions on all my apps on my phone in preparation for it, so I don't just drop everything cold turkey. I feel like easing into the habit will help
@@decodethevideo1619 well. My phone I had before fucking killed itself like two days into September so that forced me into a couple of days of no phone September while I waited for my new one to come in. Then I completely forgot about the challenge. However, those couple of days without my phone did make things a *little* better. I'm still on my phone more than id like to be, but I think I've cut down my weekly average screen time, at least a little bit. So in conclusion: uhhhhh it did not go as planned! But I'm more conscious of my phone time which pushes me to put my phone down more. Baby steps I guess!
"it costs you virtually nothing to continue consuming content. Just your 20s, just your young adult life." was a quote that I was not expecting to hear and is going to haunt me, rattling around in my brain as I continue to do the same things. Great video btw!
Hahaha thank you!!
Fr, the whole part about how addictive & habit forming media consumption is totally hit the nail on the head. We waste so much time in our lives scrolling through social media every day but even though we all know it’s bad for us, it’s so difficult to stop.
I think this video is my reminder to log off for the day and spend more time in the real world lol
yeah this actually made me delete instagram lmao
Watching this video in the bathtub because I can't handle the quiet.
...wait
It makes me irrationally angry that the used CDs you bought cost more than they did originally.
Oh no, it's absolutely rational LMFAOOOOO
This is why I encourage people that are into physical media to learn how to make bootlegs, especially when it comes to cassettes and CDs; unless it's LED printed many times you can easily make those in your own home, it's how all of my favorite indie labels started, just making bootlegs
Yeah I was pretty shocked that Ok Computer was $15 new!!
Im not sure that would count as irrational i am afraid
As streaming subscription services increase in their price and number, I hope we see a DVD renaissance similar to how books have had a comeback. I miss bonus features and falling asleep to a DVD menu.
I honestly think that it will happen to a certain degree. I think we will start to remember that there is value in owning physical media and art/DVDs of Shrek. I also have an ipod classic that I think I might start using again.
Already started for me. No Netflix, less TH-cam, I use Spotify for one podcast, otherwise it’s dvds and library books and CD’s for me. In my adult life I have not listened to music without ads until now
its already started. its been picking up steam over the last year.
I personally always go through the DVD at the thrift bc I know Physical media is just going to become rarer and rarer
Books … had a .. comeback? How does that work 😂
i think a fix for the expense of physical media is the LIBRARY!! totally free and endless options
I wish I had a library near me 😭😭😭
My library even has PlayStation/nintendo/xbox games you can borrow! I think more of them are doing this, at least in my country
Some time = six months. No phone, no internet.
this happens to me too! i can go months where i block all my social media and then the nanosecond I decide to unblock it I go back to scrolling for 5 hours a day
Thats because you do it wrong. Just like restricting all sweet things. If you do it and let yourself have a cheat day, you will end up eating a pile of sweets in an hour. Because you didn't actually gained control over yourself. The control is when you have a phone and can leave it laying on a table for hours. Not when you have to physically remove it from yourself.
sometimes that harsh restriction acts as a super healthy reset, and other times as an unreal expectation for anyone to have
i kinda did the same thing in a way. i stopped being online so much and read more and went outside more and what i noticed was, if you wanna be a legit adult you really can't be online or playing video games because it just takes up so much of your time. i got a lot done when i wasn't online or gaming but then the husband wanted to play an online game again and now nothing is getting done in the house.
I like this tiny man
And I love this comment
this video had a weirdly big impact on me? kinda opened my eyes to really how much time i spend mindlessly consuming. definitely gonna have to implement no scrolling before 9am!
“think in park” got me more than it should’ve
I got an ad right after he said thinking. I instinctively said thinkin park. Came back from the ad and he said it immediately
When he said that I immediately clicked the Subscribe button.
Just started medical school last week and this vid could not have come out at a better time. It felt like my brain getting a well-earned massage, thanks man keep them coming!
Wow good luck on starting medical school, that's a big accomplishment! Glad the video could be relaxing!
NO WI-FI?? Thats a flex for sure! Thank you, just trying new ideas!
That's crazy but I respect it, I ignore my physical media too much
My husband and I were foster parents for awhile and every worker and kid that came into our house kept saying how quiet it was.
It’s also important for your ears! They need time to rest.
Do it! Even if it sucks! It’s worth what you’ll learn from it!
This is actually such a fantastic idea!! I’m going to try and convince my boyfriend to do this with me for the month of September. Kudos, Mr. Snail!
That's super cool, thank you for considering that!
Beautifully said
This video reminded me to actually read before bed again, so thanks for that.
Wow that's super cool to hear, thank you so much for saying that! It's a skill I'm really trying to get better at and refine.
DAMMIT IT'S THE DUDE WHO INVENTED GIMBERLY
Think in Park killed me, I laughed so hard because I didn't see that coming 😭 and you with the tinfoil hat, I can't. I love your videos so much. I listen to vinyl and it's always like a ceremony to get the vinyl, wash it (I am a nerd, I have a mashine for that), putting the vinyl on, sitting down and switch sides in between. It's so nice, getting lost in music and REALLY listening to the music. Without doing anything else.
Hahaha thank you!! Truueee. I just started setting up my record player again for a similar reason!
„Not listening to a podcast while folding laundry feels like a waste“
Me while wlking home from the bus while watching / listening to this while also playing pokemon go: pff, couldn’t be me!
You have a DVD player. You can literally use that to listen to CDs.
this video made me realize that I miss it when I didn't really have internet access as a teen, and i enjoyed music more, I read books more, and I was way more creative with my hobbies
"Titilated by digital delights....... physically" ... lmao
Thank you very much for your video! It's so well crafted, I just love green screen people in some random backgrounds, it's the shit, haha
I live in Russia, so we don't have have such a thriving selection of non-digital music sources here.
Although I can't afford buying CDs, I'd like to get an MP3 player and be more conscious of music consumption at least.
this video genuinely inspired me to step back and actually pay attention to the world around me
Public libraries are great places to get physical media FOR FREE
It’s good for your brain to have that quiet time as well :)
Doing this alongside other people and seeing people try this out makes me so excited!
You are definitely contributing meaningful content to the platform 😊
Laughed multiple times at "physically", as well as "Thinkin Park" and the square 4:3 DVDs- which I have a few of those as well! 😂
Yes please to building stuff for us if you feel up to it- that shelf was a great idea!
I definitely enjoy playing youtube videos while doing chores or projects, as those tasks can be far more tedious and sometimes miserable without that boost of stimulation and entertainment lol
Keep up the phenomenal work Cary- you are one of the coolest people in the world! May the snail be with you! 😃
Thank you so much, that’s really good to hear! :)
Dang that’s impressive!!
My gen X soul loves that you grabbed “OK Computer”-masterpiece!!
Millennial here, SAME!!
Gen Z and I agree :)
I did not expect you to get that much mileage out of that shelf. Well done, sir.
Edit : As long as you're just experimenting, try a week of sleeping in a hammock instead of a bed. Changed mah life.
I love how you shared your knowledge of what you read and found out!! That's such a good detail!
I love that you sit on your mini shelf almost the whole video it’s great and visually enhancing lol
I really enjoyed this video! I think I'll try it for myself. I'm definitely addicted to music and youtube... My brain feels like a static mess:(
I'd recommend taking advantage of your local library if you want to experience more physical media on a budget.
I enjoyed Dawnshard enough that I’m thinking about buying my own copy.
liking this video at 0:33 just for the aesthetics. 10/10
Same
I did something similar in 2022 when I used a flip phone for a few months. It really helped me focus. I’m always tempted to do it again.
Also the irony of me watching this in the background while I did my job is not lost on me
Thanks for sharing!!
being in portland i'm a bit disappointed you didn't pick up any elliott smith albums!! aha, mostly kidding. great video, i loved the part where you explained how it feels when you're quitting something and your brain hasn't caught up yet.
I started taking an hour walk every day in early july- no music just me enjoying the silence. It's literally the best part of my day. Since I started doing this in early july my mental and physical health has never been better.
I love your voice it’s so nice to listen to ??? If you did an audiobook I would totally be down for that
Wow that's so kind, thank you haha! People have told me I should do some sort of podcast but I have no idea what that would be haha
Didn't expect this to be such a good video
This past month I reduced my video consumption to less than half in favour of _reading_ , with an older Kobo e-reader. No colour, no audio capability, just epub texts. Also not locked into an Amazon content *leasing* scam.
Why, just today I drove down to my local public library to get a card that would let me "borrow" ebooks from them via the OverDrive system.
This is my first time stumbling upon your channel and I instantly subscribed after finishing this video. I definitely want to try to take a look at my social media/media habits now. Can’t wait to watch more videos!
The visual examples of a gullet were really helpful.
I don't think it would make sense if I didn't provide those
I fuck with this guys videos on a spiritual level I haven’t reached since I was 15
Great channel you’ve built. Def subbin
You’re goated and I’m trying my own challenge rn
Amazing video, love your editing!
gonna try this experiment !!! maybe every other week
It can be so helpful to realise that cognitive overstimulation is a very real thing!
What an insanely charming, funny, and interesting video. I love the muted colors and lack of excess stimuli, really a great watch
Came for red riding, stayed for a banger video
I love everything about this video. And I love how you inserted yourself sitting on your cute little shelf half the time lmao
If you can access one- maybe use your local library for CDs, books, and DVDs! Plenty of libraries also offer access to virtual media (video streaming, ebooks, etc.) that might also be more convenient than the physical versions!
Libraries are my beloved.
Loved everything about this video! Is that the Balatro menu background? I'd do this challenge but I'm woefully addicted to Balatro. Cheers mate!
Your personality makes these videos 100000/10 lol
my issue with physical media as someone who avidly collects Dvds and Vinyls is that they are more expensive now especially being from a small country that you can only really get them from shops selling dvds for +10 and vinyls for 20-40
In my undergrad rn, and just before watching this video, I finished what's basically the Christian equivalent of "Atomic Habits" for one of my classes: John Mark Comer's "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry." As a heavy media consumer, this video felt just like the cherry on top to the perfect detox of all my worst habits. I'm going to start trying this now with everything else I've done! Limit myself with media like it's an RE4 inventory. Thanks so much for this video man, God bless.
That's a great book! Glad this video could compliment your consumption habit journey!
BANGER VIDEO - I reallly hope this goes viral because it's such an original idea
I've never watched your videos before but "Thinkin Park" got me subbed damn I love this
This is a really great video!
this is a super relateable video as someone addicted to pinterest and spotify
One of my favorite things to do during lockdown was play minecraft with a podcast in the background... honestly I don't regret that bc it was awesome but in general I want to be more like in this video in my day to day. I want to be comfortable with quiet again
This is basically just: “playing video games and listening to music for a whole month!🤯🤯🤯”
the feet censorship is what got me that’s a funny asf detail 😂
This was such a fun watch! Great idea to limit yourself to a confined space of items as well. This is a good reminder to get back to my no social media days. I feel so much better taking a day off every once in awhile.
One point i wanna make that everyone seems to forget about:
Yes, you paid more for those cds, but are they gonna be, in the blink of an eye, if Spotify suddenly goes bankrupt bc of a bad decision out of the many they already did, GONE?
Thank you for mentioning dark patterns!
Adding because it's tangentially related: your local library probably carrys DVDs, blu-rays, games, music, etc. in addition to books. You get that same connection to physical media, plus you don't need to buy anything.
Hey there, 👋 Millennial here. Of course the cd player fits the vibe, but you could’ve played the cd on your dvd player.
This video was awesome….i feel we don’t say that enough when we start up conversations in the comments. Thanks for sharing your experiment!
boy howdy, i think this video just inspired me to do a "social media detox" of my own in September. I've already set time restrictions on all my apps on my phone in preparation for it, so I don't just drop everything cold turkey. I feel like easing into the habit will help
Since September is almost over, how's it going?
@@decodethevideo1619 well. My phone I had before fucking killed itself like two days into September so that forced me into a couple of days of no phone September while I waited for my new one to come in. Then I completely forgot about the challenge. However, those couple of days without my phone did make things a *little* better. I'm still on my phone more than id like to be, but I think I've cut down my weekly average screen time, at least a little bit.
So in conclusion: uhhhhh it did not go as planned! But I'm more conscious of my phone time which pushes me to put my phone down more. Baby steps I guess!
I dont know how I got here but this was really good!
I'm in S4 of Gilmore Girls, so now I'm curious as to who the wedding is for in S5 👀
Brace yourself
