      Short bursts of the throttle are fine. Pinning it like that, not so much.

    The 170 is a non-adjustable carb, except for the idle. On the ms-171 the air filtration system is much improved over the ms-170. The ms-171 has a H and L jet carb adjustments as opposed to the non adjustable ms 170. Power wise the are about the same and they weigh about the same.

      The air filter is sturdier on the ms171, but lots of junk gets past them maybe even more than the 170. I have looked at about 20 180/170 and just one 171. The one 171 I have had apart had so much junk past the filter.

    Ive owned the MS171 for about 5 years as a "homeowner" saw. The local dealer talked me into it. I then did some research and found the 171 has "improved emissions". Anyone who knows emissions systems knows they usually cause some power issues. Maybe someone can chime in and say whether the 170 is the same way. But i just took out some trees 10-12" in diameter with the MS171 and have no complaints

      I have a good friend that works as a technician at a saw and mower shop and when I asked him what saw is the best in the $200 price range he said the ms 171 had the fewest issues and seemed to have the best longevity as well. Over the ms 170 and ms 180.

      It is a stratified charge cylinder. They can make the engine more responsive and tune the carb better because it is a lower polluting design.

      Happy with my ms171, did circles around my Husqvarna 240 which was a 40cc. Both had 16" bars. I got around 500 hours on mine and haven't serviced it yet. The damaged filter cover is most likely your power problem, or the hot/cold diverter is dameged

    Just bought a 171 few months ago, it's never been right. Had it back twice under warranty, still off. I'm just gonna tune it myself & be done with it.

    The 170has only an idle adjustment on the carb. The 171 has a H and L jet adjustments. The 171 utilizes a Strato carb to comply with EPA regulations and the 170 does not. They both use LP 3/8 chain and have 16 inch bars. I like the air filtration system used on the 171. The air filter on the 170 sucks. I like the 171/181. I have both. They will cut pretty good size stuff. I have no problem cutting 20 inch oak with these saws, although I will usually grab one of my bigger saws for this chore. If I have a mixture of small and bigger wood, the 170/171 will usually handle it. I generally run 40:1 mix in these little saws but 50:1 works fine. I run Echo Power Blend Gold or Red Armor in my two cycle stuff. I do not use Stihl Ultra - it is to filthy.

    I’m trying to decide between the 170 and the 171. Think I will get the 171 as everyone else says it is the uprated version of the 170. I’m a petite woman so I don’t want a massive heavy chainsaw.

    That 171 sounds like it is running rich to me. I had a problem with my ms 171, yesterday. It would not go into high speed half choke at startup. I could get it running but I had to nurse it into warmup. It was running way to rich on both the L and H jets. I turned in both jets until it would run correctly in half choke position. Instead of the 1/4T out on the L jet it now has about an 1/8 of a turn out. It has excellent acceleration. On the H jet, instead of 3/4T out, it now has about 1/2T out, but it runs fine. The next time I crank it up I will check it with my tach and set it for around 13,000 RPMs, which is what my ms 170 runs. I am going to set my max rpm on the 171 to 13,200 for summer use.

    Just bought two MS170 recently. I don't consider EPA compliance to be beneficial in any way. I also noticed the quick caps for oil and fuel. These are an invitation to breakage. I much prefer the "traditional" caps. Simple mechanical screw and gasket. Rugged and reliable design. The added shock and vibration absorption of the 171 might be welcome but how durable is the spring mount? I guess only time will tell.

    I pulled the tact on my ms 171 and ms 170 this morning. The WFO readings were 12,720 for the 171 and 13,050 for the 170. My guess is someone richened up your 171 if it does not preform with the 170. I did notice the 170 is more responsive than the 171, because it jumped right up to 13,050. That is due to the Strato carb on the 171, which is EPA compliant and the carb on the 170 is not. Both saws are relatively new, but the 170 has five tanks of gas through it and the 171 has only two.

    the 170 has 2 piston rings and i believe 171 has 1 so i think that might be a difference in power

  • @johnclarke6647
    @johnclarke6647 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My bet is your 171 is running a little rich on the H side. Stihl sets them up a little rich from the factory. My 171 would not throttle up on half choke/high throttle the way it should. I checked the WFO rpm on it and it was running 12,720. I leaned out the high about an 1/8 of a turn and it had a WFO of 13,200. It also would throttle up, nicely, in half choke. I also felt it was running a little rich on the L side, so I leaned it out, slightly. I also raised the idle, slightly, until it ran like I like a saw to run.
    This is probably why your 170 seems a little stronger than the 171. It’s not, but if it is set up rich it may appear that way.

    My ms 171 is a lot stronger than my ms 170 and my 170 is no dog. My guess is the carb on your 171 is not set properly. Try setting the carb on your 171 to its standard setting - 1/4T out on the L jet and 3/4T out on the H jet. Or, use a good gas/oil mix in it. I run my saws at 45;1 with Stihl HP oil with premium, non ethanol, gas. It could also be from a dull chain. I want a saw to maintain a constant rpm throughout the cut. I cannot see a tinkers worth of difference between my ms 171 and 170. I like the air filtration system on the 171 over that on the 170. No saw will take a lot of physical abuse these days. That is just a fact of life.

    • @johnclarke6647
      @johnclarke6647 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guyleblanc840 guy, I did not see any carbon buildup on the screen on my ms 171, probably due to the Strato carb used on the 171 which injects more air into the cylinder. I removed and cleaned the spark arrestor screens in both my ms 170 and ms 171 after five tanks of gas. Had a little buildup on the 170 and little if none on the 171. I will do the same to my ms 180 after it gets five tanks on it. I also clean the PTO side, sprocket, and lube the worm gear and sprocket bearing at the same time
