    I bought a New MS170 and I had the same problems with it shutting down after it was run for a short period. I took it back Twice and the finely put a New coil on and I Never hsd any more trouble with it.

    Just bought the 171 as my first REAL saw. Had a little, very used, McCulloch that I learned on. I LOVE this little Stihl! I keep up with my husband using his Husqvarna 455 like a boss!!!!

      Husqvarna Ranchers are a joke, bought for my Stihl 028 Supper was down. Hated that Husqvarna and got MS 171 to replace the junk Husqvarna 240 which went to repair shop after every time I used it.

    The problem your having that you mentioned at the end of the video is down to over heating, use a better quality 2 stroke oil. Something fully synthetic preferably.

      That’s interesting. I’m surprised that the Stihl oil I’m using wouldn’t be up to par. Although, since this video was shot years ago, it really doesn’t seem to have this issue anymore.

    Not the cheapest saw they make but they should really replace the 170 with this but give it a better side cover. And second bar but.

    • @jettlash1000
      @jettlash1000  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Riley Redden I really like the saw, but the only downside is the lack of power. I got the smaller 171, so I'm not going to be able to cut down anything too big or too hard. Overall it's exactly what I needed.

    Good video I am thinking about buying a Stihl MS171 for my birthday. I already have a MS170 at the moment but it is really leaky in terms of the fuel cap. If I fill the fuel or bar and chain oil to the top not the brim it just leaks from the cap everywhere no problem though if I fill the tank halfway but still its a pain. I would like to know from you does your stihl MS171 leak fuel or bar and chain oil everywhere? Thank you and good video.

    • @jettlash1000
      @jettlash1000  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Marko Thanks for the kind remarks! This thing NEVER leaks a drop of gas or chain oil. I was a little nervous about the quick release caps, but they are very good! It's also remarkable because I run it all the way between -15 degrees F to around 100 degrees F. Even with all that temperature swing, it still doesn't leak at all!

    • @alexandercopeland2849
      @alexandercopeland2849 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheaper to just replace the caps on 170.

  • @DennisKenneybees
    @DennisKenneybees 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You didn't explain that you should engage the trigger before moving he start stop lever to full choke to start. This saw is notorious for flooding out so it either starts easily or very hard.

    • @karlrovey
      @karlrovey ปีที่แล้ว

      The self-primer is terrible. It's always 20-30 pulls from a cold start. Today was even worse. 15 pulls, check to make sure I didn't flood. 15 more pulls, repeat... I think I pulled it 50-60 times on full choke before it fired (though it has been a while since I used it). And no, it wasn't flooded. It's been a pain since day one. Stihl needs to give up on the automatic primer and put the bulb back on.

      Voor Vooort I have my MS171 for 3 years and haven't had one single issue. I know at least 5 other guys running MS171 for much longer then me and none of them have had any issues. What I see in many of these videos is people forcing the lever up or down without pulling the throttle. There's a proper procedure.

    you shouldn't be using a chainsaw... no protective clothing and using it all wrong. Improper use of the chain brake.

    • @jettlash1000
      @jettlash1000  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +thomas grepne I would agree, not a smart thing to do. This may be a good example of what NOT to do. I was so focused on showing off the chainsaw, I didn't even think of it. I always assume everyone knows what should be worn, but new comers may not.

      Been using a chainsaw 5 or 6 days a week for over 10 years and have never once worn a helmet or any chainsaw clothing. I would recommend people to wear protective clothing but stop making a big deal about it ffs do you put all your gear on to chop logs

  • @newcoyote
    @newcoyote 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video should really be removed. I don't want to come across as a jerk or know it all but you are saying things directly contrary to cardinal rules of chainsaw use. "I make sure my chain brake is released"!? While STARTING it? THat's like saying "I make sure the safety if off while I load my firearm". Unless you're cutting, the brake it on. Other concerns have already been mentioned in the coments below.

    • @jettlash1000
      @jettlash1000  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My understanding is that the chain brake is meant to shut the chain off in the event your arm/body gets pushed forward or the saw kicks back. It will shut the chain off. I was told not to use when starting, because it’s hard on the saw.

    • @newcoyote
      @newcoyote 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Told by who? Do you have the manual? Page 37. You don't bring the engine to high RPM with the brake engaged but when starting or the saw is at idle, put the brake on.

    • @TheWoodsmanMilling
      @TheWoodsmanMilling 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I start mine with the break disengaged. Less stress on the clutch when it goes into high idle.

    Bare legs, trainers that don’t look as though they are steel capped, walking about in a tangle of branches, chain not locked as he wanders about… not a GREAT safety demo!
