I’m glad you got hermit crabs they are so fun to keep, but you did some things wrong, hermit crabs need the substrate to be at least 6 inches deep if you can do more than 6 inches that’s even better they need the substrate to be deep so they can molt, also you need a heater, heat has to be between 72 and 78 the humidity has to be between 70 and 77 if it goes higher your going to have some problems also it would be best if you put them in a tank and the lid has to be 100% percent closed that one you made it not good at all because it’s open and won’t keep the heat or humidity in, you should have mix the substrate together it’s better for them also the food they sell for hermit crabs at Petco or petsmart is not good at all so get rid of that I only give my hermit crabs Fruits and vegetables, also you need to add shells and painted shells are toxic to hermit crabs. I have had hermit crabs for 14 years now. Your crabs are most likely purple Pincher hermit crabs which don’t really need saltwater but you can still have it in the tank if you want.
Nathan's Fish is correct. Go to Crab Central Station for proper Hermit Crab care. They are much more complex creatures than people realize. Good luck with yours.
Purple pinchers need both salt and fresh water. A diet of only fruits and vegtables isn't going to cut it. It's better than commercial hermit crab food but hermits need 50% protein. They need chitin, protein and lipids, carbohydrates, calcium, omega fats and carotenoids. They don't get enough nutritional value from fruits and vegtables alone.
Please add in a shell shop, with different size pain free shells so they can move into a natural shell. And please add a heating pad and attach it to the back of the enclosure . Also mixing in the coco fiber to the sand will be better for burrowing. Other than that the enclosure looks great
I can hold my Hermit crabs for well over an hour and they wont pinch me. My hermit crabs actually enjoy being handled and will let me know when they want to come out of their tank. My smaller hermit crab actually poses for photos.
Hey I own three hermit crabs as well your substrate needs to be deeper ,u need a humidity and temperature gauge need proper humidity to breathe or they slowly suffocate, u need extra shells that are not painted, throw out those pellets they slowly posion them u can give them fresh veggies and freeze dried food
I know this is 8 months later I'm wanting to get back into keeping hermit crabs I had them when I was a kid. Do you know if a tank heater alone is enough to maintain the heat and humidity? I live alone and oftentimes I'm out during the day and I'm just concerned about the fire risk of a heat lamp
@@Wingsofwar123 No I don't intend on using Tupperware. I had hermit crabs when I was a kid and although they lived for a number of years they didn't have the greatest environment or life. I want to make amends for that by creating an absolute hermit crab paradise in a 55 gallon tank minimum.
Hello, I am a hermit crab keeper. Well used to be, all of my hermit crabs died of old age and I’m not getting anymore but one thing is that they will eat egg shells they love egg shells just a food tip in case you run out of food.
Make sure you close that top off with some sort of plastic. It needs to hold the humidity. Also make sure to get a heating pad and that the waters are deep enough to fully submerge. Also you’re gonna need a lot of shells for them. I have a degree in marine biology so if you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me.
very little substrate, teeny tiny water "'dishes", no information on how TOXIC those painted shells are, or how people shouldnt keep them as pets... nice
If you really know what you're doing, you can keep them as pets. It takes a lot of research and commitment. I never would suggest buying from a pet store, but I've rescued them and will be buying a captive bred one this summer.
You need to add a place for them to go in the water so it will be realistic, you can get a plastic container that you would us to store food in and push it down in the sand and put water in it. And you need bigger shells so they can move out of there old one
Have to ask?? Do you need to supply them with a new shell after a few months or do the grow a new one like a tortoise would. Aka shed their outer layers. Was just wondering.
Yes they need new shells and the widest part of the opening has to be 1/4 inch bigger then there previous shell. They also molt every now and then like a crayfish
@@PYROTOAD tortoises grow and their scoots will shed, I would know I have 7 of them. That is if the grow to fast the shed their scoots, if normal growth they get rings like trees get it’s just small.
Hell boy for one 🙌🔥 , I've got 9 of these. They are truly awesome ! Love changing up the tank style and climbing stuff for them 😊❤️ watching them do a shell change is very crazy , the way they look at all the shells and make sure the next one is perfect for them it's so amazing ❤️
He put them in, but they're not big enough. They're just dishes and not pools. The main reason for pools is for molting. They completely submerge before each molt to fill their shells. It keeps them hydrated during the process.
Go to crab Central Station here on TH-cam. You will learn what hermit crabs need to live a good life! Please consider adopting hermit crabs instead of buying them at a store!! They are plucked from the wild and go through HORRIFIC circumstances to get to the pet store!! th-cam.com/video/PSda2pzAMGA/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for checking out the video! Make sure you leave some names for these guys in the comments!
I haven't done research but don't you need to offer them more shells
If those are painted shells on the hermit crabs try to get them to take it off cause painted hermit crabs shells are toxic for hermit crabs

does closing tightly not make the tank smell bad?

Chris get rid of those shells ASAP.. the paint off of those shells will eventually chip off and they may eat it.. it would do great damage to them!
u can use painted shells if u sand it down and clear coat very well
@syfols9701 not really because they will sometimes break pieces of there shell and eat it

You need a heating pad or heat light or they won't survive
Heating pad.. No heat lights and a H. crabs enclosure has to be sealed to keep the moisture / heat in and humidity high. Pools are too small.

@RabidNemo u just a heat mat to stick on side of a aquarium or terrarium. I would not recommend using a Tupperware for a cage

@RabidNemo OK like i said u can get one of those heat mats for reptile and stick on the aquarium for heat. U don't need to use a heat lamp for them

Noooo the pet store painted their shells and glued something to the light blue one to make it look "cool". That petstore SUCKS

you should change there shell the paint on there is not good for them !!!!
they need more shells, the ones they have on are toxic because of the paint
Where’s their water dishes? Their freshwater for bathing and saltwater for drinking I didn’t see any water.
