I have been a Protestant my whole life, and I just attended my first RCIA class yesterday! I researched Catholicism for almost 2 years before I took the leap of faith, and God willing I’m on my way to full communion. Keep the awesome videos coming, Matt! If possible you should reach out to the Apologists at Catholic Answers, that would be fantastic dialogue!
Your first Eucharist will be amazing. It is going to be a powerful Easter and I am excited for you. I've been blessed to be a cradle Catholic, but do recognize the power in Eucharist. My biggest "advice" is to spend some time in adoration.
Congratulations Isaiah, you were a Christian now you will receive the whole truth of the Gospel and Christ himself in Communion! I am a convert from atheism. I had an encounter with Christ in 1985 and received my sacraments of initiation becoming Catholic in 1987. Praise God, I love Jesus and I love his church.
Hope you got to attend a May crowning and watch them carrying a statue of Mary around kissing her feet and placing flowers. And did you get your first rosary yet? That is idol worship. And good luck with the false pope.
Leah James It was a number of things, but it was mainly history and logic. I was reading backwards in time into the reformers, to the schisms, to the early church fathers, then ultimately to the scriptures (both old and new testaments). Each thing kept pointing to the Catholic Church.
@KinnPlays Of course! And Christ also came specially for the illiterate, who could never in their life times read even a line of the Bible. Christianity is not the religion of the book, but of the Person - whom we truly meet in the Eucharist.
@@leahjames6870 In a nutshell, I realized it made no sense to believe that God allowed his religion to be corrupted (soon after its beginning), then allow it to be restored only 15 or 16 centuries later, just to be corrupted again a little later (since protestants disagree with one another on some key issues) and even so believe that I particularly was in the right denomination, stp. Moreover, that meant I believed not in Christianity, but in the Bible: but a book can't talk by itself and must be interpreted. Thus there are many different interpretations. This way I believed only in myself, in my interpretation. In short: it was stopping believing in myself and beginning to trust in Christ.
20:06 From a Catholic perspective, the importance of Rome can be seen in two aspects: 1) It is not important simply because that's where Saint Peter died. But because that's where he was Bishop. The leaders of the Church after the Ascension of Christ were the Bishops, and Peter was the first among them. So after his death, the new heads of the Church would be his successors in what he was: the Bishop of Rome. 2) Rome is also symbol. The Romans were the ones who crucified Christ, and first persecuted His followers. So the head of the Church being in Rome, the center of the Empire who tried to crush "a small movement from Judea" , is a remembrance to the power of God that can defeat your worst enemy, no matter how big, and turn him into your friend and supporter.
Super Clear on this verse brother. Romans 1:7,: "To all in ROME who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ."
Maybe it's God's way to fulfill Isaiah 53 chapter 12, "Hence I shall give him a portion with the many, and he will share the booty with the mighty, for having exposed himself to death and for being counted as one of the rebellious, whereas he was bearing the sin of many and interceding for the rebellious." The mighty nation by the time Jesus lived, the same nation that made the crucifixion and salvation possible was the Roman empire. So they will be God's tool for saving humans through His Church. His work is truly remarkable. Praise God!
Hebrews 10:26-31 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, [27] But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. [28] He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: [29] Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? [30] For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. [31] It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
I was a protestant for 40 years and converted to Catholicism after reading Church history, studying the history of protestant reformation, and observing the many problems with the protestant arguments. One clear observation, if Christ did not leave us with a Church, Christianity would look very different today. Protestants take the Nicene Creed for granted. The Church formulated the creed in response to heresies plaguing Christianity, mainly Arianism and Gnosticism. Each part of the creed is in response to a heresy the Church spent centuries combating. Had there not been a Church to formulate theology, the faith would nothing like it does today. You cannot read Apostolic Fathers without seeing they all strongly believed in a single Church. Christ instructed us not to divide and 500 years after the protestant reformation there are thousands of protestant denominations each claiming to have a better understanding of the scriptures than all the others. And every day more are created. As a protestant, I knew very little about the Catholic Church. What I knew I learned from other protestants who learned what they knew from other protestants. It wasn't until I began reading about the early Church did I have any concept of the full history of our faith. I knew of Aquinas, Augustine, and a few others but had only a cursory understanding. I had not read what early Christians who worshiped with the apostles had written. What did they have to say and how did they worship? All this is lost to protestants who stop at the death of Paul and don't pick up again for another 1,500 years. The depth and richness of Catholicism is mind boggling. If you are a protestant and curious to know what you've been missing, I recommend reading "The Fathers of the Church" by Mike Aquilina. It's a broad overview but it's a start.
It's nearly impossible to study Church history (openly and honestly) and NOT become Catholic. As a 37 year long Protestant my pride of realizing I was wrong was the last obstacle to me becoming Catholic.
Silverbird901 You can believe in a single Church and not call yourself a Catholic. In fact it’s easier, because you include all sons and daughters of Christ, those who are saved, as fellow members of your church body in Christ. We are unified in Christ, not Catholicism. We should be small “c” catholics, if that makes sense. (in the sense that catholic means universal). When you decide to name something as “the” church beyond Christ, you are actually the one drawing divisions. I agree that people should learn more Church history. Most protestants would find themselves agreeing with most Church fathers.
@@lukejohnson1274 My favourite part of Catholic church history is the Spanish and Italian Inquisitions where innocent non-Catholics were tortured and burned at the stake because they refused to convert.
@@lukericker8325 "When you decide to name something as “the” church beyond Christ," Your issue then is with Christ because He is the one who said the Church founded on Peter would never be prevailed against (Matthew 16:18). He also said we have recourse to this church (singular) when we have disagreements and He said that this church (singular) will bind and loose infallibly (matthew 18:17). If heaven cannot affirm a false teaching, then Jesus is saying that this earthly authority He established will bind and loose (permit and forbid in regards to the faith) infallibly. So, since Jesus said we have recourse to this earthly authority it must exist in every century and it will be the only church that has made binding decisions that all Christians believe. There is only one church that meets that standard. In the absence of that earthly authority Christians can never have anything more than scriptural relativism. One can feel morally justified in how they interpret scripture but in the absence of the authority of the Church we can never know with certainty what scripture means with epistemic certainty. Which explains the ever growing fractured state of Protestantism. I too was a Protestant apologist and lay philosopher until I encountered the early church, which was thoroughly Catholic.
@uncivilizedengr even still. Though we aren't fully brothers and sisters in Christ, we are still brethren, or in the process of. That's why the Church prays that everyone may be one, as Jesus prayed for that time. We still consider you a fellow Christian, and as Christians we are technically (and should be) one big family.
Phil do you think you and Mormons or JWs are on the same page too? How about Islam? They think their God is the same as the Jews. When you really want to know the truth,God will bring you to it.
@@kelslo74 The statement I said was meant for a Protestant/Evangelical. Even then you'd still treat them (other people not in that category) with love, like how would you treat your family. Love one another, even those who don't agree with you. It's not entirely their fault they are born JW, Muslim, etc... Unless of course they were born and raised as part of the Church, and then rejected it in their own free will, while understanding everything about what the Church is. It's not a black or white issue, there's more than meets the eye.
I went to a Protestant church in London once and they also kept bashing Catholics. They were crazy Evangelists and I don’t like Evangelism. I realised Catholics are way nicer people.

Hey! Didn't know you had a youtube channel! He is definitely my favorite professor I've ever had, and one of the only reasons I was able to get through college successfully and graduate on time with the rest of my class. And he has this brilliant knack for being able to explain complex topics in a way that actually makes sense to me, even when no one else can, like what the separation of light and darkness during creation really means. (I was just randomly scrolling through comments on this video, and did a double take when I saw "my current theology professor", so I looked at the username - oh hey! somebody I know!)
Bro it would be awesome if you can interview someone like Jimmy Akin, Tim Staples or Steve Ray who were former Protestants now Catholic and see their insight on what made them come to the Catholic Church
Matt, I love what you’re doing. As a practicing Roman Catholic, I love seeing your videos interviewing Roman Catholics. Many people misunderstand our beliefs, and it’s great that you are taking the time, and effort to understand and inform others of what Catholicism really is. I really appreciate what you’re doing, may God continue to use you as his instrument to bring people to Christ 🙏🏽
Pat Aherne actually that is incorrect. The term “Roman Catholic” refers to the liturgical rite used at the mass. Most people that call themselves “Catholic” are of the Roman rite. There are different rites in the Catholic Church such as the Byzantine, Coptic, Armenian, etc. which are Catholic and under the authority of the Pope as well, they simply use a different liturgical rite.
Again I bring up the need to a a specificity to language. Throwing around the term Catholic to only being Roman Catholic doesn't help the discussion. But on the other hand saying Roman Catholic gives a definite starting point. Work to fully explain your point so that we dan advance the discussion. Peace
@@jg2072I may have misunderstood you, but I think you have this backwards. "Roman Catholic" is shorthand for "Roman Rite Catholic" and is excessively specific and doesn't actually refer to a church, but to a subset of that church. All Catholics belong to the church of the Pope, regardless of whether they are Maronite Catholic, Byzantine Catholic, Roman Catholic, etc. Something like 90% of Catholics are Roman Catholics, but if you are referring to the people who hold the beliefs that "Roman Catholics" hold (which all Catholics necessarily also hold) then you should not say "Roman Catholic" but "Catholic." The only difference between "Roman Catholics" and non-Roman Rite Catholics is the way they worship. That difference may mean one rite speaks Aramaic in their worship service, and another speaks Greek, but it's the same beliefs. So "Catholic" is actually the more appropriate term under 99% of scenarios.
As a Protestant, and seemingly the only one in these comments, thank you for doing these videos Matt and allowing everyone to understand a little more about their more distant brothers and sisters of Christ. 3n1productions100 You are correct in referring to yourself as complimenting your Christian faith or making yourself a complete person of faith. Convert is an abrasive terminology and infers you were not Christian prior to your change of faith.
and we all lose a bit when we are split. While I believe the fullness of faith is in the Catholic Church (not just roman catholic) I also believe that we are lacking because of the split's we've had. Our protestant brethren have important functions to the body and we need to reunite to be complete
Cliff Pyle I find “cradle “ anything to often be lacking. If you want to know a twin, ask a stranger who has settled down there rather than a native who is apt to be blind to the views. Mind you there are cradle Catholics and Protestants with faith and zeal but we each have that spark of conversion where our faith becomes ours rather than our parents or cultures

Matt. I want to say, "Thank you." Before I found your channel 3 or 4 years ago, I was really struggling with the concept of, "I'm right! Everyone else is wrong" when it came to my faith and other Christian denominations. Watching you unpack with so many other traditions has made me realize that the other doesn't need to be wrong for me to be right. I really appreciate your honest but respectful conversations with those who have a different mindset as I do. That being said, I'm still happy to be E Free...
Christopher Wheeler thank God you've realized that others don't have to be wrong in order for you to be right! I see this with many Christians who are caustic and accusatory, and it's impossible to develop a good dialogue with them. Congratulations on receiving God's grace of charity!! :) I do have some advice: keep what is good and recognize what you actually agree with. You'd probably be surprised to see what you agree with when talking with a Christian who is from perhaps a different part of Christianity than you. I practice this often, and I see that many things that others believe is what I believe also! Test everything you come across to see whether it comes from God, or of the enemy. You can become quite sensitive as a result to good versus bad, and I think that is a good thing. ;)
joe men As a Catholic I agree. For you to be right the other person must be wrong. That doesn’t mean however that you can’t have an educated and civil conversation with someone who believes differently than you.
Joe men absolutely right. We can’t all be right. As C.S. Lewis and others explain, the truth is not subjective. Just because your Protestant/Catholic friend really really believes what he is saying and seems to be a really nice person....doesn’t mean he is right. The truth doesn’t cater to us, we must find it and believe. If I’m right, and you disagree with me, then you’re wrong.

@@lolhey6954 Jesus, has set up a Church headed by Peter as the rock of the Church to teach others what Jesus has taught and given divine backing to the Catholic Church that Satan will not over come it in Matt 16 :18 I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Jesus appointed His disciples to be His representatives on Earth by investing divine authority unto them when He breathed the Holy Spirit into them in John 20:20 Jesus gave the keys of His Kingdom to Peter and the authority to act on His behalf- to.bind and loosen in Matt 16 : 16 -19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. "The keys" are abilities to open and explain the Gospel truths, and a mission and commission from Christ to make use of them; and being said to be given to Peter particularly, denotes his after qualifications, commission, work, and usefulness in opening the door of faith, or preaching the Gospel first to the Jews, ( Acts 2:1-47 ) and then to the Gentiles, ( Acts 10:1-48 ) ( Acts 15:7 Acts 15:14) and who was the first that made use of the keys of evangelical knowledge with respect to both, after he, with the rest of the apostles, had received an enlarged commission to preach the Gospel to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. There are 32000 denominations each proclaiming to be the one true Church. The only way is to look back to see what Jesus taught and what the Apostles and early Church believed. They all.hold Catholic beliefs like the true presence of the Eucharist etc. The Apostles were also given the authority to bind and loose and the authority to retain / forgive sins in John 20:21 - 23 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you!As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Jesus promised to be with the Catholic Church till the end of time and the mandate to proclaim the Good News in Matt 28:20 teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Thus the Apostles have divine authority to represent Jesus on Earth and knew the correct interpretations of what Jesus taught. That is why they wrote the New Testament under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles passed on these teachings to the Early Church Fathers and their disciples. The teachings and doctrines of the Catholic Church after 2000 years is the same as what Jesus taught and what the Apostles upheld. All of the present Catholic clergy can trace their ordination back to the Apostles. These are the biblical basis of the Catholic Church. All other 32000 denominations/churches including yours are founded by men without any divine authority and are not found in the bible.
Matt, I gotta say. I love you, man. Your videos were instrumental in helping me solidify my faith during a time which otherwise I definitely would have turned away. So thanks a ton in that regard. Keep being awesome & thanks for letting God use you in this way! Your stuff is truly a wonder with this Jesus thing we all got in common in a way or another.
Monster Song Thank you! I wish I could point to a specific point or doctrine, but I think the best summary is that I came to see the Church as the best example of the visible body Christ established. I used to only watch Protestant apologetics (before finding Matt, even) and later analyzing the arguments of other plausible denominations is what got my foot in the door.

@DiscoFalcon I am finding a trend in Evangelical circles of Works Salvation. Works not in the Catholic sense, but the ability of one who once was saved to lose or leave their salvation, which imho is works salvation.
@DiscoFalcon Interesting, I am a protestant and I have found that most protestants believe that salvation is guranteed. This I find strange as in my church we DO NOT believe that salvation is guranteed, rather we must 1. believe in God sincerely, 2. recieve the holy spirit. 3. Baptize in water. 4. stay away from sin. these are the four points we think are needed to reach salvation
Myself as a Protestant theology grad and a very intelligent Catholic friend are having similar discussions -- heck perhaps we should film them. Thanks for this video man, very encouraging that we're able to unite on so many points.
Damon If 'uniting' means accepting multiple heresies, count me out. I am a firm believer in the fundamental unity of the Church, but under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, not some overarching administrative superstructure. When Paul warned against the partisan spirit in 1st Corinthians 1:10-17, I don't suppose that he intended compromise at all costs. That would be in conflict with the tenor of the rest of his writings.
@WethePeople My house does not include the pope. I am not, have never been, and have never considered being Catholic. Jorge Bergoglio does NOT represent Biblical Christianity, Catholic claims notwithstanding. True, there are many Christians within the Catholic denomination who cannot disentangle themselves from past attachments, but no one can force them to leave if they do not wish to leave. JESUS ALONE is Head of the universal Church, which is a spiritual Body and not a temporal territorial/political entity. He is also the One Who will take over after the fall of the present corrupt world order, which will have to culminate in one-world government before it is totally destroyed.
@WethePeople I answered this objection on the page already. I said that my house does not include the pope. I am not, never have been, nor have ever considered being Catholic. Bergoglio does not represent historic, Biblical Christianity but is a heterodox ecclesiastical politician. There are many Christians in their denomination who feel bound by traditional loyalties and needlessly so, but one cannot force them to leave if they choose to remain. Jesus alone is Head of the Church, which is a spiritual Body and not a territorial/political organization like the Vatican. It is He Who will rule in justice and righteousness after the present world order has passed away. I believe that a brief period of one-world government will come about before it is inevitably destroyed.
I'm very intellectually driven. And intellectually the Catholic Church interests me quite a bit more than protestantism. And in all honesty, I knew more about theology than the average christian, I'd say. I was already a christian and I was anti the Catholic Church with conviction. The deciding factor for me to become Catholic, surprisingly, had nothing to do with intellect. I did not want, by any means, to become a Catholic! I was fasting and praying quite a lot at the time, then a series of "coincidences" started happening in my life. When there are two or three it's ok, but when in a short period of time there are around ten or fifteen coincidences... well, makes you think, right? So I started remembering things ever since I was a child. And in each place I had lived, each address, each country there was something that was profound and related to the Catholic faith that I had never noticed in my life. My entire life was laid out in front of my eyes and I could suddenly see a pattern, a path that I was suppose to follow. That gave me a lot of anxiety, because I had known my whole life the Catholics adored saints and the Virgin Mary and that that was wrong. Finally I decided to go to a Catholic Church. When I finally did, about two weeks later, I was very skeptical, and so was my wife who I had convinced to accompany me. She was not a big fan of the Catholic church, I'll tell you that much. There was no way I could have a transformative experience, I thought. I expected it to be boring and a mistake. What was I doing there? I did not know much about a Catholic Mass, I did not know exactly what the sacraments meant to a Catholic, but a few minutes after the Mass started my whole life changed. I felt for the first time in my life a direct connection to another realm... God, the angels, all of that (mind you, it was in the beginning of the service, not during the Eucharist when Catholics actually believe that that happens - but I didn't even know that at the time). It was the most unique feeling that I've ever had and I don't know if I'll ever experience it again. Out of nowhere it was like a storm going on inside my body, I had goose bumps ALL OVER. I had NEVER felt like that. I looked to my wife and I was tearing up and I could't even talk (for her it was a regular Mass, but she noticed something was different for me). At that moment I just knew I was home. And I don't say home because it's just a way of saying it. I truthfully felt like that, like I was my home, and that that's where I was supposed to be. My wife also converted and is also a devout Catholic. It doesn't matter if you want to believe a certain way or not, it doesn't matter if you understand something or not... some things are the way they are, the way God created them to be.

What this Protestant does is what so many do not: He asks questions of those that can fairly answer from the Catholic point of view, rather than ask those who cannot. Secondly, when the Eastern Fathers were persecuted for rejecting Arianism, they came to Rome for the final ruling. Always it was to Rome for ultimate decisions.

Why was the very first council of the apostles called by James and not Peter? Why was the first ecumenical council called by the Emperor in Nicea and not Rome?
I'm also a former evangelical Protestant who was very anti-Catholic but I'm now a Catholic! I came home at the Easter Vigil 2015, after 6 years of prayer and discernment as I began questioning parts of my Pentecostal Protestant faith.
Thank you - I'm rediscovering my Catholic faith (and engaging with my protestant friends) and really appreciating the light you're shedding on both paths.
I wish Fr. Benedict Groeschel was still alive, you would have had an incredible conversation with him. He great theologian and could explain things better than most ppl. Best wishes from Peru.
Thanks Matt for the video. I am Catholic but I really love to listen to conversation with Protestant brothers that is full of love and respect.. I just wish the video was longer!

@AB D114 One Body. How much more can clear can Saint Paul be? He didn't mention multiple churches/multiple bodies. You are trying to impose your view of Scripture instead of God's view. You can't make Scripture into your personal view, it's God's Word not Your Word. Protestants/Evangelicals do not understand Scripture because the canons of Scripture were determined by the Catholic Church and Protestants weren't around for over another 1,000 years.
When I first began to believe in God I went towards protestantism but after aabout a year of prayer for more truth, I began to get closer and closer to the Catholic Church. I am hoping to be confirmed this December 💜🌈 if all goes well. Thank you for your video, brought me even closer to God 💜
Lovely story, mine is similar. I prayed too after feeling a way about Seeing Joyce Myers ministries. I think prayer led me to my husband who was Catholic and then I converted because I fell in love with him and Jesus Christ ❤❤❤
Thank you for this, Matt. I grew up in a Protestant home which was rabidly anti-Catholic. I’m glad you’re shining a light on other Christians and helping everyone see each other as people rather than us vs them.

Great questions Matt! Keep them coming. I returned to the Catholic faith and I'm learning a lot from your videos. :) I really thank the Lord that we can dialogue like this with so much respect and love. Peace my brother! Can't wait for the 2nd part!
I'm Orthodox, and I think your video series is very important to foster understanding among those who name the name of Christ. I would encourage those of us watching this series to promote it among our Christian friends.
As a Catholic this is one of my favorite channels. Great discussions and Matt is a great host who approaches history and tradition in a respectful, logical, and intellectual approach (from a Protestant POV).
The part of the video when you said “be careful studying that church history you’re about to become a Catholic” was interesting. There’s a gentleman by the name of Tim Staples who went through that journey. Look him up when you get the chance. I hope to see you have a conversation with him on one of your videos one day.
Karlo Santo Domingo yeah Tim Staples is great on Catholic answers so is Jimmy Akin and I like watching Steve Rays videos who to was a former protestant. Scott Hahn is another great one.

Absolutely love how Matt touches on how his American libertarian biases on authority and individuality affect his perceptions. Looking forward to part 2.
INDEED!!! I was once very close to where Matt is now. I was more "American" than Christian, and (Sad to say) like MANY Americans, I didn't realize how close I was putting MAN's institution (the State) to GOD's Institution (His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church).
I really like how respectable you approach the different religions. It makes it for a nice conversation to listen with opportunities for much learning. Thank you!
Key phrase: "I've been studying church history for a long time, and I'm still not a Catholic...I don't feel like I have to be." At the point where you believe what the Catholic Church teaches about the sacraments, then that's when you will realize a Catholic is what you have to be...because when you believe what the Church teaches about the sacraments, you will want to receive them. My experience, anyway.
Chris - I think it's going to be interesting to watch Matt for the next few years... He's clearly a Well Educated person on matters of the Faith, and he's "dangerously" close to making the same "Mistake" I made a few years ago - the same "mistake" Scott Hahn, Marcus Grodi, Dave Anders, and countless others have made. :-) And of course, that "Mistake" is in giving The Church a fair hearing. Speaking ONLY for myself - I'm like the friend that Dr. Homes discussed in the early part of the video. I accepted Christ, But then (years later) I DID Come to the Realization that Christ founded an actual, visible, earthly Church, and that it still exists. Faced with that realization, I found myself with no choice BUT to accept HIS Church (and its been a Wonderful choice!!!). However, I respect that others Can (and do) reach different conclusions.
I don't feel the need to be a catholic I feel the need to worship Yashua and know and learn how I may do the will of the father his way his time line in his son,s name .
I read more than once....the books "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist" by Brent Pitre and "Salvation is from the Jews" by Roy Schoeman. I am Catholic all over again because of those books.
HI, Matt! I want to thank you for your work on the 10 minute Bible Hour! I really enjoy your channel and how open and respectful you are to folks you may or may not agree totally with. That disposition is such a rarity nowadays. God Bless you my friend from a fellow Protestant from Madison, WI!
Please bring us the second part of this conversation soon! I think that there is so much misunderstanding of the depth of Catholic/Orthodox theology, and that very often people see Christianity through a strictly Protestant lens. More discussions with Anglicans/Episcopalians would be fascinating as well. Thank you for your good work. I've recommended your channel to many fellow Catholics. Great video Matt! I wish more people were having dialogues like this. I converted to Catholicism because I was ultimately convinced by the historical claims and the logical necissity for a divine interpreter. It's interesting to hear your point of view on this! I'm curious, are you familiar with St. John Henry Newman?
What do you mean by "divine interpreter"? * Do you not believe Jesus' words in John 16:13-15? * Are we not called to follow Abraham example, taking God at His word? An act of faith and expectation which was accounted to him as righteousness _(James __2:23__)?_ _ _ _ _ John 16:13-15 - _"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, _*_He will guide you_*_ into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears _*_He will speak;_*_ and _*_He will tell you_*_ things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and _*_declare it to you._*_ All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and j.gdeclare it to you."*_ James 2:23 - _"And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham _*_believed God,_*_ and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And _*_he was called the friend of God."_* . . . . . . . This is one of the issues I have with the doctrines of the RCC. That they encourage lack of understanding and faith in God's desire and ability to fulfill what He has promised. Instead they call it penitent and humble to walk in a lack of faith. When in reality we can stand as saints in the righteousness of Jesus Christ _(2 Cor __5:21__),_ boldly able to come before the throne of our holy God and Father. Hebrews 4:16 - _"Let us therefore _*_come boldly_*_ to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."_
@XYU When you say "church", do you mean a man-made religious organization or the definition the Bible gives of a spiritual entity that is made up of all born-again believers that make up the body of Jesus Christ? Yes, I agree that God can use men both good and evil to assemble HIS BOOK. BUT if the catholic church hadn't existed, would it have come about anyway? *of course* Why? Because God is able, even inspite of the stupidity of mankind.
@XYU When I speak to catholics they wear the achievement of the assembly of the Bible as a crown of eternal righteousness on behalf of the RCC. As if it equates a man-made religious organization unto righteousness there after. While forgetting that all religious organizations are made up of both righteous and evil men because we are in a fallen world where humanity has a propensity for evil. It is this very type of docrine that is used by all cults that places their "church" as the gatekeeper to Heaven. Making their "church" the way, the truth, and the life. This is a blasphemous teaching that robs glory from YHWH, and introduces idolatry that ultimately leads to damnation. This is likely why there are thousands of protestant denominations. Because no one religious organization is holier than other. Righteousness is defined individually before a Holy God. YHWH is a personal God first, before being a corporate God. It is only IN Him that each body part is a member of His Church. Why? Simply put, salvation is found in Jesus alone.
@@joemen3332 You mean someone needs an man-made religious organization aside from having the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel? That's the silliest thing EVER! Hello . . . do you know how many missionaries have gone into the mission field with no backing. God told them to go, so they went. He directed them, He provided, He opened doors and souls were won. Sorry but you need to listen to testimonies after testimonies after testimonies of all the marvelous things God has and is doing. All I can tell you is that He is way bigger than you're giving Him credit for.
@XYU So if you agree that a man-made religious organization is made up of both evil and righteous men. Why would you equate the doctrines that come out of the religious organization as righteous and equating it to "the one true church" that is the gatekeeper to heaven? That logic sounds beyond flimsy?

As someone who has familial ties with the Byzantine Catholic Church, although the Hellenic culture and cultures of the Near East were different they can still be considered "in communion" with the Roman Catholic Church because they CHOSE to return and become unified (examples being the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church, the Syrian Catholic Church, and Armenian Catholic Church). In the prayer provided by Pope Francis at St. Michael's Ruthenian Catholic Church here in Toledo, it specifically prays for the "eastern rite catholic churches" to provide guidance and to expand their culture/rite to the rest of the East to become one with the Roman Catholic Church. The one big clause among other discrepanicies that created the Great Schism of 1054 was "primus inter pars" meaning "first among equals". The Eastern Orthodox churches regard that the Pope is to be considered an equal with the other five Patriarchs, which is somewhat similar to how the Roman Catholic Church sees it although the Roman Catholic Church dogma is the Pope is the final say in authoritarian teaching about aspects that were not formally given in the Bible, such as homosexuality (which was given by the letter "Always our Children") among others.
@@jamespowell_km_kchs yeah half of my mom's side of the family split to becoming Russian Orthodox and half to becoming Roman Catholic since there wasn't a Byzantine Catholic Church. So I grew up Roman Catholic, but by trying to get to my ancestral roots I have gone to several churches here in Toledo including St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic, St. Michael's Ukranian Catholic, St. Joseph's Catholic (uses Latin Mass), and now I mostly go to the Cathedral downtown
Very nice piece Please consider that a correct name for the Catholic Church is"the Catholic Church".. Not the Roman Catholic Church.. Which is a Protestant name.
Very nice conversation. I suggest you also interview the Byzantine Catholic chaplain at Wyoming Catholic. By the way...the Syriac Maronite Catholics & the Byzantine Italo-Greek Catholics never were in schism with Rome.
How about Chaldean? I was privileged to be at a Chaldean Mass in San Diego, where the default liturgical language was Aramaic, not Latin. Yet the prayers, translated into English, and the heart of the Liturgy were the same. More poetic, more Eastern, but the ancient prayers were so familiar to this Roman Catholic. Chaldean is also Catholic but I don't know if they reunited or never were in schism

As a practicing Catholic, I'm so thankful to see a dialogue like this. I've been so disrespected before and bullied by protestants before, and OBVIOUSLY this isn't everyone, and OBVIOUSLY there are rude Catholics to Protestants too, but I do admit hearing a Protestant respectful to the Catholic faith is so endearing and feels like a rarity. (No mean to offend anyone really)
nilocblue If you care to read some history, you may find that the bullying goes BOTH WAYS. 'FOR ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD.' (Romans 3:23) As I've observed, some Catholic hard-heads feel that bullying 'Protestants' is a mark of great virtue. I've met others who lack conviction. Frankly I'm not sure which is worse.
Our faith singular. If we are saved by Jesus we are Christans. If you are belive in a diffrent God then it is a diffrent faith Protestants and Catholics have diffrent traditions and cultures but majority of them have the same God God are saved by his death on the cross.
Here's some food for thought, Matt. When you stand outside a Catholic cathedral, you may recognise that its architecture is cruciform, you can see that it has stained glass windows and a Cross at the top, but you can't appreciate what's inside, because you're on the outside looking at it. You can't appreciate what happens inside a church just by looking at it from the outside. For instance, those stained glass windows are very hard to identify from outside because the light is shining on them. You have to be on the inside to fully appreciate what they look like with the light shining THROUGH them, then you can recognise the images and understand the story they're telling. Spiritually, it's very similar. The deeper you go inside the Catholic faith, the more you begin to understand it. When you come to the point where you realise that you're missing out on so much, that will be your turning point. Until then, you're searching, and when you seek, you will find! God will draw you! ❤️🙏🏼🇦🇺
Some people don't want to become Catholic because being Protestant is so convenient. You have no conscience about divorce and artificial birth control and have thousands church hoping options if you feel inconvenienced. Protestantism is much better "choice".
Have you ever come across documentaries on Eucharistic miracles, lke the one in Lanciano, Italy or the more recent one in Akita, Japan? The Eucharist is Christ physically with you. Isn't that awesome and reassuring. God bless you and your family, Matt!
Yes. The Story of Akita needs to be more widely known. Along with PADRE PIO. I've visited Akita several times. It's about people learning how to CRITICALLY THINK, doing Objective research and finally personal experience. It's very rare to meet people who do all three. And that's a problem I think when people are searching for direction or some kind of truth.
Loved this. I Sincerely believe that those of a pure heart and Love for God eventually find there way to the fullness of Christ. It may be bumpy but God gets His people to Him. Hallelujah.
Revert to the catholic faith here. Really loved this guest friend of yours, he’s blessed with virtue of patience and kindness! Please know that Protestantism opened my heart to Christ, church history and former Protestant turned Catholic apologists convinced me of the Truth of Christ’s Church, but it took me falling in LOVE with its collective 2,000 year wisdom passed down by way of its saints and faithful like Pope John Paul ll’s Theology of the Body, as explained by Christopher West, that captured my heart in total humility and obedience in running home to Rome. Don’t stop asking questions, knocking, searching. Christ will lead you exactly where He wants you to be. Blessings.
I think it's great that you took the time to have a calm, Christ like conversation knowing going into it that you would both not agree on everything and you didn't choose a debate format which I think is a nice change.
AGREE 100% - and it's why I keep coming back to Matt's video's. Frankly, I find Debates QUITE Counterproductive, and IMO they SELDOM lead to Truth or Conversion!!! ALL they prove is which combatant is the more skilled Debater!! SMH..... As anyone who has studied debate or rhetoric will tell you, a skilled debater can take EITHER SIDE of a proposition and make a compelling case for it. That's HARDLY a basis to seek or find Truth!!
I will have you in my prayers, you're a great man. We catholics and protestants are brothers in our faith in Christ our saviour. We should pray more for each other. Great channel, I've just suscribed. Greetings from a catholic who loves your videos.

May I ask, what made you all convert to Catholicism???
Leah James It was a number of things, but it was mainly history and logic. I was reading backwards in time into the reformers, to the schisms, to the early church fathers, then ultimately to the scriptures (both old and new testaments).
Each thing kept pointing to the Catholic Church.
KinnPlays Yes, though I’m a slow ready and it look me quite awhile.
20:06 From a Catholic perspective, the importance of Rome can be seen in two aspects:
1) It is not important simply because that's where Saint Peter died.
That was actually beautifully said. Great points. - A fellow Roman Catholic
Not only that.... The importance of the magnitude of the Roman Empire. That helped the spread of Christianity big time. The times of God are perfect.
Super Clear on this verse brother.
Romans 1:7,: "To all in ROME who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ."
@J P "immature" I assumed that you are a kid.
Maybe it's God's way to fulfill Isaiah 53 chapter 12,
"Hence I shall give him a portion with the many, and he will share the booty with the mighty, for having exposed himself to death and for being counted as one of the rebellious, whereas he was bearing the sin of many and interceding for the rebellious."
The mighty nation by the time Jesus lived, the same nation that made the crucifixion and salvation possible was the Roman empire. So they will be God's tool for saving humans through His Church.
His work is truly remarkable. Praise God!
I was once a protestant. Now I'm a Catholic. I converted in 2018 and in 2019 I had my first communion and confirmation.
Uh studied and still LCMS
@@lukericker8325
"When you decide to name something as “the” church beyond Christ,"
Your issue then is with Christ because He is the one who said the Church founded on Peter would never be prevailed against (Matthew 16:18).
As a Roman Catholic, I appreciate the fact that we can dialogue with our Protestant brothers-in-Christ. Keep up the great work.
Richard L. Hernandez same here. I love it
Same here! God Bless everyone! #ecumenism
Unless of course they were born and raised as part of the Church, and then rejected it in their own free will, while understanding everything about what the Church is.

You not be surprised that Roman Catholics live in the diocese of Rome... only.
Throwing around the term Catholic to only
being Roman Catholic doesn't help the discussion.

3n1productions100 You are correct in referring to yourself as complimenting your Christian faith or making yourself a complete person of faith. Convert is an abrasive terminology and infers you were not Christian prior to your change of faith.
Same!! Non-denominational to Roman Catholic :))
and we all lose a bit when we are split.
I do have some advice: keep what is good and recognize what you actually agree with. You'd probably be surprised to see what you agree with when talking with a Christian who is from perhaps a different part of Christianity than you. I practice this often, and I see that many things that others believe is what I believe also! Test everything you come across to see whether it comes from God, or of the enemy. You can become quite sensitive as a result to good versus bad, and I think that is a good thing. ;)
“The other doesn’t need to be wrong for me
To be right” that is so cool! God bless
joe men As a Catholic I agree.

Jesus, has set up a Church headed by Peter as the rock of the Church to teach others what Jesus has taught and given divine backing to the Catholic Church that Satan will not over come it in Matt 16 :18
I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Jesus appointed His disciples to be His representatives on Earth by investing divine authority unto them when He breathed the Holy Spirit into them in John 20:20
Jesus gave the keys of His Kingdom to Peter and the authority to act on His behalf- to.bind and loosen in Matt 16 : 16 -19
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
The Apostles were also given the authority to bind and loose and the authority to retain / forgive sins in John 20:21 - 23
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you!As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Jesus promised to be with the Catholic Church till the end of time and the mandate to proclaim the Good News in Matt 28:20
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Thus the Apostles have divine authority to represent Jesus on Earth and knew the correct interpretations of what Jesus taught.
What about the Pope sanctioning the Lgbt community, even though the bible strongly layout such actions as against His very Word.
Matt, I gotta say. I love you, man.

may I ask how you agree with justification by faith and works? Also how do you agree with the authority of papacy
“When Protestants speak of salvation, they are describing justification; when Catholics speak of salvation, they are describing sanctification.” Peter Kreeft
In Hoc Signo Vinces God’s election is one thing, if we aren’t talking about the thief on the cross situation. As a protestant, I don’t believe you can have justification without the process of sanctification. They’re part and parcel. God bless you!
So how is one justified in the Catholic view?
@Cortney Nicholson thank you for your response.
Myself as a Protestant theology grad and a very intelligent Catholic friend are having similar discussions -- heck perhaps we should film them. Thanks for this video man, very encouraging that we're able to unite on so many points.

If 'uniting' means accepting multiple heresies, count me out.

My house does not include the pope.
@WethePeople
I answered this objection on the page already.
You should be catholic
Go careful of God's brightest star there light lightbringer.
So interesting how intellect gets so much in the way of faith finding. Your story, and how the pattern emerged to you is beautiful.
How can you say u r an intellectual when you don't even study or mention the original church...the Orthodox church??
@@eliseos4127 When I say I am "intellectually driven", it does not mean that I claim to be an intellectual. As a matter of fact, I wrote that it was not my intellect that brought me to church. Do you really think that someone you do not know and who is sharing their personal experience on a youtube comment is required to mention whatever you think they should? Also, how can you be so sure about what I study or what I don't study?
As to your other comment, how can you understand from 'I was once a protestant. Now I'm a Catholic." that I said there were only two options? How exactly could you know what I did or did not consider before? Leave your ego and outrage aside and think for a second instead of being combative for no reason.
What do you know...?

Interview Trent horn next ( apologist on catholic answers) please. I would really love to see you both talking

I love Trent Horn though, he is young and has such a creative and clear way of teaching.

Great questions Matt! Keep them coming. I returned to the Catholic faith and I'm learning a lot from your videos. :) I really thank the Lord that we can dialogue like this with so much respect and love. Peace my brother! Can't wait for the 2nd part!
It’s so great how respectful y’all can be towards each other in this conversation! Looking forward to part 2
Fabulous conversation between the both of you. That is what life and religion are about. There are no closed doors. Thank you.

You are highly respectable for a protestant my good man. A civil dialogue is always the best kind.
hey i think personally the stereotype of the angry protestant stopped with martin luther, as well as with many stereotypes of the catholic church.
I don't think so. Nothing but rotten history and apologists. Disgusting. Look up Orthodoxy, the original chuchc they never tell u about.

INDEED!!! I was once very close to where Matt is now. I was more "American" than Christian, and (Sad to say) like MANY Americans, I didn't realize how close I was putting MAN's institution (the State) to GOD's Institution (His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church).
What an inspiration for how to dialogue well & respectfully. So refreshing in our divisive culture. Can’t wait to listen to more.

Then I hope you've seen the other 3 episodes he has put out over the last year and a half.
I really like how respectable you approach the different religions. It makes it for a nice conversation to listen with opportunities for much learning. Thank you!
Key phrase: "I've been studying church history for a long time, and I'm still not a Catholic...I don't feel like I have to be."
At the point where you believe what the Catholic Church teaches about the sacraments, then that's when you will realize a Catholic is what you have to be...because when you believe what the Church teaches about the sacraments, you will want to receive them. My experience, anyway.
If you want to understand the Catholic faith look up Dr Brant Pitre you'll find him on TH-cam

Please bring us the second part of this conversation soon! I think that there is so much misunderstanding of the depth of Catholic/Orthodox theology, and that very often people see Christianity through a strictly Protestant lens.
An act of faith and expectation which was accounted to him as righteousness _(James __2:23__)?_
_ _ _ _
John 16:13-15 - _"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, _*_He will guide you_*_ into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears _*_He will speak;_*_ and _*_He will tell you_*_ things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and _*_declare it to you._*_ All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and j.gdeclare it to you."*_
James 2:23 - _"And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham _*_believed God,_*_ and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And _*_he was called the friend of God."_*
*of course*
Why?

Please consider that a correct name for the Catholic Church is"the Catholic Church"..
@@CrankyGrandma I know Syriac Catholics & have seen Chaleans on EWTN...I didn't mention them because this theologian is at Wyoming Catholic College, which also has a Byzantine chaplain.

WHY WOULD you be a member of an unproven cult that is ran by a homosexuial priesthood who aren't allowed to Marry ,, etc ?? lol
nilocblue
If you care to read some history, you may find that the bullying goes BOTH WAYS. 'FOR ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD.' (Romans 3:23)
As I've observed, some Catholic hard-heads feel that bullying 'Protestants' is a mark of great virtue. I've met others who lack conviction. Frankly I'm not sure which is worse.

The word Christian is in God's true word. But the word Christianity is not in God true word at all.
Just like the word Bible is not in Gods true word at all
The Roman Catholic Church is not of God at all. If Peter was living today he would be against the Roman Catholic Churchs
I love that viewpoint. Great explanation! I'm a Catholic with Baptist background; I fought Catholic theology tooth and nail.

It's about people learning how to CRITICALLY THINK, doing Objective research and finally personal experience.
It's very rare to meet people who do all three.

Great discussion! Feels like a peaceful oases after listening to a couple of "militant" religious channels.
Unfortunately, even with "explanatory videos" there are far too often "militants" in the comments, who don't really listen, but condemn others with their way of expressing themselves.
@@manub.3847 Take heart, Manu. This is the world we live in, but these discussions only have any effect inasmuch as God uses them to do so.
