- This video is about Barakamon, an anime that helped me immensely with overcoming perfectionism.
Barakamon is a slice of life and comedy anime that aired in 2014, centered around Seishuu Handa, a talented but temperamental young calligrapher. After winning an award for his calligraphy, his life takes an unexpected turn when, in a fit of rage, he assaults a well-known calligraphy expert who criticizes his work as "unoriginal." In the aftermath of this incident, Handa's father sends him to the remote Goto Islands to reflect on his actions and find a new perspective.

Barakamon is such an underrated gem.
Gonna add it to my watch list
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
I'm an artist. Whatever drawing i looked at that was nearly perfect, but not really, I came to understand what exactly was imperfect and then studied that specific aspect, until the next time, that one thing felt perfect, but now that part feels perfect, but not the others. It's an endless cycle, but I never really felt bad about it. I look at my old drawing, think "wow, I can do that so much better now" and then redraw it. I've done that so many times, it's satisfying to see the same drawing in different stages of my life, looking at exactly what has improved. If it was perfect from the start, this would've never happened. There would be no reason to keep going. So I'm glad I made those mistakes and figured out how to not make them, and I'm glad I'm still making mistakes that I'll look back on and think "wow, I've improved so much, i should redraw that"
Such a beautiful perspective, thank you for sharing. It truly is a delicate cycle when, unbeknownst to us, the pursuit of growth morphs into perfectionism. And just as you suggested, I too believe that without those initially daunting imperfections, we’d never experience the true joys of growth.
