    I love what you did. I did one about 2 months ago and lit mine up also. What a lot of people don't know is that you can sand a polish LEDs to fit anywhere on any model and as long as you don't sand too close to the electrodes in the LEDs you can make them fit anywhere. I did mine with a little more LEDs all done with armature wire to save room and a got a pretty good looking model for such a small size. Yours looks great. Waiting for the larger kit to appear so I can really go crazy on the lighting.

    I just got my model of the Discovery in the mail from Amazon. I am SO looking forward to working on it. It has been YEARS (like 20) on doing anything like this. After suffering from a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury (Dural Sinus Septic Thrombosis (97% fatality rate)) and tearing the tendons & ligaments in both hands, I need something to help restore my dexterity and improve cognitive functions. Always being a fan of Star trek, one of the ship models was a 'no brainier' to help do just that. No matter how it turns out or what it looks like, I'm going to be proud. And thak you for this video. It will help me SO VERY much in my recovery. Hmmm...Maybe I should rename mine the USS Recovery ;)

    On your decalling, try Walter's Sol-a-set for those really stubborn decals, and maybe Microscale Microset or Testors Decal Set before you place the decals, these will help with those large decals that have been given in the newer Star Trek models.

    I gotta say that while the Crossfield class is not my favorite by a mile - this kit and your build make me want to build one. I'm not sure I agree with you that "I'd" want a larger (more expensive) version but a little one like this that seems pretty packed with the appropriate detailing... I'm in.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doubtful they'll market another kit anyway.
      Most people haven't seen Discovery, it's beyond a paywall/streaming service FEW people want to pay for and the few that have seen STD generally don't like the show if they've seen and appreciate classic pre-2009 Star Trek.
      At this point, CBS has to virtually PAY the licensees to make anything related to STD since the post-2009 Star Trek projects have been colossal merchandizing failures The toys based on the 2009 and later movies have NOT sold well -- the designs don't resonate with people and what was made was not designed well and built with quality plastics. The JJ-Prise is a European-exclusive model kit marketed by Revell that had to be imported. The ONLY JJ-Trek model kit officially released in the US was the USS Franklin from Star Trek Beyond and I'm sure that it didn't do that well because it was associated with a box office bomb that many people didn't like.
      That's the problem with merchandizing. People with disposable income generally want to buy product associated with TV shows and movies they do like. Post-2009 Star Trek despite high box office has not inspired people like Classic Trek did.
      The same has happened with merchandizing associated with the Star Wars Sequel films. It just doesn't sell because the people who buy these things really don't like the films all that much.

    Love the build, you've given me some good ideas for my kit I'm currently working on.
    Question: I've lost my display base and downtube! I'd like to do something similar to what the kit has, except with a hollow tube where I can run my electrical wire through and put a switch down below on the base itself.
    As I search the web to find a similar base, any suggestions as what to fab up?

    Not sure at the moment with the pandemic and China's agression and trade problems. But there are pre wired micro leds that will fit just about anything. They are tiny and very bright. Can be used to light up a hot wheels car realistically they are so small. Also the price would be comparable.

    Man, looks great. Do you think it would be possible to use a superfine drill bit or a pin to open up the little windows and let the LED light shine through? Or would that not work?

  • @ughmodels4059
    @ughmodels4059 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For the decals.. Next time try a mildly hot rag and press the rag on the decal and it will help "mould" the decal to any seams/ detail better.

    • @scottfirman
      @scottfirman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what Decale solvents are for. They snug down decales to hug the details better. Solveset works best. Any model worth is salt can tell you that. A bottle will last you a life time on models that size.

    I built the original Enterprise and the original Klingon ships in the mid 1960's and I think I much prefer a LARGER scale. Beyond that, could they POSSIBLY have made an UGLIER Enterprise? This looks more like a KLINGON ship than a Federation ship.

    How long do I have to wait for a decal to dry? This is my 1st build ever so I got stumped after snapping the pieces together and then not knowing how to put the decals on thinking at first that they were simply like stickers! xD
    And is the transparent circumference of the decals supposed to stay showing like that?!

    • @odesseus
      @odesseus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Decals don't take long to set, meaning they are no longer moveable on the surface on the model, anywhere for a minute or so. They will take a full 24 hours to fully dry and adhere to the model, though. It's usually advisable to spray a clear coat over them to protect the decals, but that's completely optional. As for the transparent edge, yes, that is typically still visible after the decal is applied. Many modelers trim the decal very close to the printed part to remove that edge using a sharp hobby knife so it doesn't show. It's a lot of extra work, but many consider it worth it. Again, totally an option. Have fun!

    Did you get 2 packs of clear parts on your box?

  • @scottfirman
    @scottfirman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    On that small of a model SMD LED's would have been a better choice. I have enough that came off a cheap toy helicopter that would be more than acquit for a model that size. If you can use a soldering iron SMD's are the way to go. Advanced model builders like myself would even go as far as lighting the Discovery name and number. Even adding blinking navigation lights could be added using a RC plane lighting kit. I have 6 kits I bought for both planes and models. I prefer magnet wire on the small kits like that. I would even remove the doors on the hanger bay and open that up and add a box to fit inside to make a hanger bay and light that also. Even small kits like that can be lit. I think easier than large kits myself. Again SMD LED's would be way better than 3mm LEDs.
