Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything), Ethan Hawke (Boyhood), Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher) and Michael Keaton (Birdman) sit down with The Hollywood Reporter's Stephen Galloway to discuss their craft, their acclaimed performances in 2014 and more.
During the roundtable, Benedict Cumberbatch discusses castration vs. imprisonment in "The Imitation Game" and Eddie Redmayne discusses his characters personal and physical struggles in "The Theory of Everything."First-time, Oscar-nominee Channing Tatum shares with the actors how he almost turned down his role in "Foxcatcher" that caused his career to take a serious turn. Michael Keaton discusses the similarties between his role in "Birdman" and his role in the now Oscar-nominated "Spotlight." "Mr. Turner" actor Timothy Spall explains that the contradiction that made his role, as J.M.W Turner, an ecentric British painter, a barrier was the whole point of his character and praises the seven-time director of the film Mike Leigh, who he has worked with seven times over 33 years. Ethan Hawking, suprisingly, shares that there was nothing challenging about playing his role in "Boyhood" and says, "when you're are working with a world-class filmmaker [Richard Linklater, I don't ever feel I'm taking a risk, I feel safe."

Both Keaton and Cumberbach seem to be compassionate and accepting men. I really liked how the stepped in to shut down the interviewer's aggressive skinning of Tatum. He's not an intellectual but he's worked hard out of a poor background and even if his movies aren't my taste all the time, I respect his effort and humility.

Guy, let the conversation flow. That's what makes it different from other interviews. They have good points and I wanted to hear the rest of them. Just close your little mouth hole and soak it all in.
+MAJOR3058 What's the point of it, if it constantly gets interrupted? I'm sure they won't miss their flight if they get to end a story. This guy doesn't referee anything. He just doesn't feel them. He desperately wants to participates so he ruins it for everyone else.
+MrSatanochio it seems weird that something this logical has to be said, shows run on an allotted time, let's say 50 minutes. The show cannot last 52 minutes, or it needs to be edited down. Why? If it is shown on a cable network or regular tv network, they need blank space for the ending credits or commercials. The host is there not only to ask questions, but to guide the conversation and make sure that they are running on the allotted time given. *sigh*
MAJOR3058 Nevermind the stars? Then why are we watching it? Isn't this about what they have to say? The crew has to get home? Then they should get some people who are willing to do some extra time, because it's not something you'll get to see everyday. I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not...

dmurrdock24 I agree. I've watched a roundtable before, with another mediator watching the time span. Everyone was polite, and let each other speak. The mediator didn't try to hog the conversation - and the actors were very enlightening - I really enjoyed it.
Despite the interviewer's egotistic interruptions, the actors were giving and generous with one another. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I think he has to get the conversation going so not only one of them is still talking. I noticed that someone is not able to stop talking at all Ethan Hawke:D

because he seems so stiff, cold, and analytical, and seems to recoil from anything warm, sincere, and emotional, in favor of asking sensationalized questions about gossip that will create buzz worthy headlines. He reminds me of Team Coco 's Jordan Schlansky. Look him up, this interviewer and that guy are soulmates, in that neither of them seems to have one.

Channing Tatum is rather pleasant and articulate. He knows that he's surrounded by huge actors and what he says is intelligent without being presumptuous. It shows that he's at a different phase of his life and understands films and parts better.

Michael Keaton thanking Ethan Hawke and saying to the interviewers face that he knows he gets uncomfortable with warmth was honestly the best thing ever. The interviewer can be so obnoxious sometimes and I know that's been in his nature for most of these roundtables over the years but it's nice to see one of the actors have a bit of banter with him.

I'm a big fan of this Stephen Galloway's method of moderating/interviewing actors and artists. He's not afraid to interrupt the guests before they've even finished answering. Nor does he find it bad form to break up a natural conversation between the actors for the sake of a deeply uninteresting question.
I can always count on Galloway's top notch form. Looking forward to next year's roundtables.

Stephen Galloway drove me nuts in this interview. The conversations would spring up organically between these actors and he would completely derail them by interjecting some inane question that had nothing to do with what they were talking about. Your job is to moderate this round table if it goes off track or the conversations need guiding dude and they didn't need you all that much.

And he usually interrupts them with questions that have nothing to do with what the actors were talking about, like some sort of overeager robot checking off a list of questions. You'll have an actor in the middle of a tearful story about his mother and just as he's getting to the coda about how her death changed his perspective on life and art and love, this guy will be like, "is fame bad?"
But xNoSc0 is right - he's usually much, much worse.
Timothy Spall did go on a couple long tangents though. It's the interviewers job to keep the momentum going and also the session interesting.

Well, that depends on what you find interesting (I thought the tangents were fairly entertaining), but I don't even remember him interrupting Spall. It was in other instances where he seemingly didn't get the answer that he wanted (happened to Cumberbatch a couple of times), or was bored, and just spewed out a completely unrelated question mid-sentence, that it was irritating. I feel like the best interviewers for these sorts of roundtables are the ones who guide the conversation rather than try to control it, and this guy is definitely in the latter camp. Though again, I should state he was much, much better than usual this time.
Wow I've never given Michael Keaton much thought but I absolutely loved him here. He seems so genuine, and I loved how interested he was in what everyone else said.
He have to see him in the recent "Dopesick" he won the Emmy for, he is so touching!

It was really cool to see Michael Keaton and Ethan Hawke share their geniune admiration and respect for each others work, but frustrating how the interviewer kept cutting them off. Having Keaton call him up on it at the 42 minute mark was really satisfying.

I was actually waiting for the interviewer to bring that up, feels like someone didn't do their research.
Maybe they didn't want an awkward moment because one of them is getting recognition for the same role the other played

I guess he just wanted to avoid an awkward comparison between him and the role that started his pre-sherlock success, and another actor being (almost definitely) nominated for an oscar for the same role.

To all the people saying, "why is Channing Tatum there?" Maybe he's there because he had a good performance in Foxcatcher. It's not about his past movies (i.e. magic Mike, 21&22 jump street) it's about Foxcatcher. Don't define an actor based on a couple of movies. I think this is good for Channing Tatum, maybe now people can take him seriously.
The people are asking though cos whilst he was good in Foxcatcher, he is still way below Gyllenhaal, Oyelowo, Fiennes Teller hell even Carrell should be the lead actor in Foxcatcher and Channing the supporting. If Tatum counts as lead actor he is probably 8th or 9th this year.

i like what you´re saying and i agree on that, but what about his past performances? i loved him on magic mike and side effects, but as you said, this is about his last film "Foxcatcher" in wich he is amazing, out of this world! so yeah... and i loved when you said "dont define an actor based on a couple movies". totally agree, there´s some actors i hate because of their films or their performances or even their roles and then it comes the time when i get to see them in a pretty good film or giving a nice performance and i have to admit it so you were totally right and fair about what you said, thank you for that.

Timothy Spall is actually killing me with how hilarious he is, lovely guy and his wit is fantastic to listen to.
Ethan Hawke and Michael Keaton have been two of my favorite actors for decades, so glad they are still getting quality work. And Benedict is a class act.
In 2009, I wouldn't have thought Channing Tatum would be in a "Oscar roles: Actors Roundtable" and not seem out of place.

A very good roundtable. I love watching these every year, makes me feel lucky that I'm a movie fan and I get to know the actors a little more.

I really look forward to these roundtables but maaaannnnnn I instantly get bummed out when I see that THIS guy is the host. He cuts the actors off in mid thought all the time....I mean GOD DAMN !!! You're surrounded by talent....just be quiet and soak it all in.

Some people said that Benedict did a mediocre job at playing Alan Turing. Di you even watch the movie? He was fantastic, it was so emotional and it really pulls at your heart strings when you think about everything Turing went through. You can tell that Benedict got very attached to Turing and his story when he talks about it in interviews. He did his research on Turing and talked to colleagues that had worked with Turing, and Benedict's representation of him was truly beautiful.
We have no idea how much Alan Turing contributed to the War . He didn't fire a Gun , flew a plane, drive a Tank . He stayed hidden from all our heroic moments but the weight of what he done in the secrecy of decoding is monumental and hugely led to the Allies winning the war . They have put him on the 50Pound Note now

I’ve watched a lot of these round tables with the actresses and actors and I’ve got to say this is been the most enjoyable Round Table of all that I’ve watched. Timothy Spall is a total kick in the pants and I have loved his work, and the amazingly versatile collection of characters he has played.I am a huge Anglophile, and I adore British television, theater, and film, so I have caught some of his best work over the years. Have loved Michael Keaton throughout his entire career; we sort of grew up together and I was so delighted to see him return to film ... and what an amazing project and performance for his comeback! Have been in love with Ethan Hawke since he made Dead Poets Society and I’ve been a solid fan ever since. Love the bold choices he has made in his career. Who does not love Benedict Cumberbatch’s amazingly fluid, silken voice, and the brilliant intelligence and wit he brings to every part he plays . It’s difficult to find anything wrong with Channing Tatum. It’s a pure treat to watch him dance, it’s exciting to see the versatility of parts he’s played. He can be a hunky stud he can be a comic buffoon, he can even be Gene Kelly. Eddie Redmayne has a goodness, an earnestness, a beautiful heart and it is on display in every film he’s ever made. His performance as Stephan Hawking was excruciatingly gorgeous!

When Ethan started talking about River Phoenix, that just made my day. Made me think of when they starred together in Explorers. By far the best part of the show before the interviewer cut him off.

I wish the interviewer would stop interrupting them. These men are so intelligent, so articulate and so knowledgeable that they don't need a moderator to keep talking and guiding them.
I like how Michael Keaton and Benedict Cumberbatch let Channing Tatum know that going to college and not graduating because he believed he belonged somewhere else was not a failure. He was young and trying to figure out what he needed to do in life and took a chance.

Everyone at the table is genuinely interested at what the other actors have to say except from the interviewer. He's just thinking of his next question. I understand that that's just what interviewers do but it feels so unnatural. Also, the interrupting makes this hard to watch. So rude.

Timothy Spall what a wordsmith, he had me completely entranced throughout this Roundtable of conversations. Wonderful.
How annoying that the interviewer derailed the conversation (several times!) esp during the part where they were talking abt British actors vs American actors, London vs Hollywood . I wanted to hear more and it seemed like the actors had more insight to share or explain their points more.
Glad that Michael Keaton made a point of thanking Ethan for his compliment later on bec I think Interviewer again cut in there and didn't give Michael a chance to reply to Ethan earlier.
It's one thing to divert a conversation if the guests have gone on too long but none of these men did. There were times when they have just started making their point and he would cut in with a different question that sometimes totally changed the direction of their response or interrupted their thought. Ethan( I think) had to talk over the interviewer more than once just so he could finish his point because the guy just interrupted with another question before he was done answering the first one!
The actors were much better behaved in that they all waited patiently and listened carefully to the others while they spoke. I just wish this interviewer had done the same as it was a rare opportunity for us to hear these great actors share their thoughts candidly and with more depth. Let them speak!

I totally agree. He kept interupting then when they were literally just answering his questions. You can tell that they had a lot of insight on their behalf and that they wanted to go in to in much more depth and explain. But we wouldn't give them the chance to. As though we will get another chance to see these and maxing actors around the same table again. However the actors all did amazingly well

Most of these guys are method actors, while Tatum is a practical one. The others discussed thoughts, fundamentals, philosophy, motivations... while Tatum talked about things he's seen, things he said, things that happened... it's actually refreshing in this roundtable. And I'm glad he's sitting next to Keaton, the chillest yet warmest guy in the room.
'Birdman' seems to have revived Michael Keaton's career. Not heard about him in like 10 years. Maybe this movie will do to his career what 'Dallas Buyers Club' did for Matthew McConaughey.
Lovely to see three Brits here too. Hoping Eddie Redmayne wins the Oscar. They were all amazing but his performance was something else.
I find these roundtables pretty inspiring for my own work, even though it is not the field in which I study nor is it my intention to start an acting career. To see six people talk about their inspirations, how they find success, compliment each other and share a laugh speaks to their content in themselves and their profession.
But also they are willing to talk about the mistakes they've made along the way.

ClaireNewmanChase Scott Feinberg isn't. Look up his "breakout roundtable" from last year. He walks the perfect line between being engaging, interesting and respectful. I really wish Hollwyoodreporter let him do more of these interviews.
James Bash I'll look it up, thanks. I've only seen an interview of his, with Josh Charles, and I wasn't particularly impressed but he certainly was ok and not annoying like the other people at these roundtables (I don't know her name, but the woman who does them is the absolute worst).

I finally figured out why Michael Keaton is so compelling, I think. He presents himself - has always presented himself - in such a way that I'm convinced he's never experienced a moment of self-doubt in his life. He oozes confidence and conviction, and he backs it up with this almost flippant refusal to sugar coat anything he says, so a person never walks away from him thinking, "I wonder what he meant by that," because he says what he means. It's kind of fascinating.

There is a world of difference with these eloquent British actors AND these intelligent American actors (at least with Channing, intelligent enough not to but in too much when the more experienced are talking), than the 2016 actors roundtable which is just everyone else showing off. I really enjoyed this, apart from the interviewer always needing to cut off, instead of organically structuring the panel.

Well said. Women deserve better roles, enough with those women portrayed as weak human beings, I demand more characters like Ellen Ripley or Annie Wilkes.
Or Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor from Terminator 2! She was a complex, gritty and raw character who wasn't even Hollywood-hot, she just came off as a real mother who was ready to fight off the entire world and commit murder if it meant protecting her son! She was simultaneously as vulnerable as she was hardened, as coldly rational as she was insane, and seeing her character opened up my eyes to the world of possibilities that female characters could be!
Laura Zaetz How about Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron in Mad Max Fury Road)? Another woman who kicks some asses.
+Laura Zaetz Women do have interesting roles. But the number of those roles is much lesser.
Love Benedict Cumberbatch saying "let's not get into this shit" when the host decided to turn it into a very self centered joke about accent, and because he chose a woman to play... Perfect brilliant man.
"Talk about a spoiler." - Tim Spall is the best when it comes to interviews. He manages to take them from some awkward mutual back-patting into a place where everyone is relaxed and laughing.
Timothy Spall is such a criminally underrated actor.

This is a great watch, absolutely. I don't feel a need to rank one performance as better than the other. It'd be like only being able to love one Hamlet, or one Holmes, etc. Half the wonder, for me, is in the interpretations. Redmayne's Hawking looks like it'll be excellent, and Benedict was magnificent in the role.
Imagine a round table with Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Daniel Day Lewis, Leonardo Di Caprio and Orson Welles.
i love interviews like this, because we actually know the people behind the roles and their actual selves, not the instagram-facebook-twitter and tabloid they are portrayed to be.

Is it bad that I feel horrible when Eddie Redmayne gets cut off or ignored by either one of the bigger actors or the interviewer? It's so heart breaking to see how disappointed he looks when they do.

I won't lie - I honestly couldn't take my eyes off Benedict. He looks so good in this interview! And the way he talks with such passion and so eloquently - its just wonderful to watch!

I have tremendous respect for all the actors ON this table.
Some are legends, some are just truly talented in their own rights and some just came so far as an actor sitting together discussing what had inspired them to become an actor.
Never a dull moment.
Love listening to how they made their own research and dug dig within their souls playing their characters.
When the host cut off Ethan, then you will see Eddie and Benedict look at the host.. They were very frustrated on his behalf.
These are so awesome to watch. Just listening to their stories, experiences and views and to what got them here is fantastic. Keep it up THR!
Here only for this great group of actors. Cannot bear this interviewer, makes me grind my teeth everytime he speaks, especially now that the more recent interviews don't have this guy.
I never want these to end. Each one, I just want them to talk forever.
