That whole monologue from Mark Ruffalo on how RDJ has done it all and doesn't have to prove anything to anyone is honestly some beautiful stuff to hear from a friend.
Hit it on the head. RDJ basically saying, if you think you’ve done it all you have nothing left to do and reach for. So, you have to go int a new project you’re keen about with the mindset, you haven’t done it all or you’d just wither away. That goes for a lot of things. I didn’t realize they have known each other for so long,
Scripted friendshiep is so fascinating. A dystopia with glitter and pretty people. Filled with shit.
@@Gnossiene369 I mean, everything with Hollywood celebrities seems phony on some level. I choose to believe this is genuine. Regardless, it's a sweet monologue.
@@Gnossiene369 Easy thing to say from someone who's not in the industry. You do form bonds with some people you come across in the industry. And when Mark said when he first met RDJ back in the mid-90s, that was when RDJ was known, but getting into a lot of trouble. And they met through mutual colleagues. That does indeed happen.
@@Gnossiene369If you ever spend time making movie on set n its doing good, you'll feel like you have this great bond with the crew and could be with co stars too. People unite to create something can be really intoxicating. I felt such when making short movie n it could have been really awesome when u r on long shoot for months.
Incredibly rare to see friendship captured so well on film. Not protecting themselves at all from the other, just being genuine. Especially around that 20 minute mark.
It’s a shame we never got to see a solo hulk movie with mark ruffalo. It would’ve made some box office revenues.
Go watch a podcast lol plenty of genuine friends talking, discussing and laughing about whatever and even people who haven’t even met each other before forming bonds over the podcast 😂 this is nothing compared to what else is out there. I do love these two blokes though so I’m not going to stalk and troll you for the rest of your life for the umbrellaed comment you made. I hope you think twice before making such comment again and hope you find god. Merry Christmas bruz and don’t let the drop bears get ya yeehawww!

@@mainly_marvelRuffalo truly is! I’ve always found him adorable, even though he’s like way older than me.
I’m so grateful RDJ is sober and healthy and that we still get to have him around. So many people lose that battle to their addiction.
Me too! When I think of of what we would have missed had he succumbed to his addiction! And what He would have missed out on in his life! Makes me happy he's a survivor!❤
Philip Seymour Hoffman is one who comes to mind. Like RDJ a great actor.

The Actors on Actors where the two have been co-stars either once before and reunite or multiple times and are good friends are always the best ones to me cause it feels more like we’re just watching a regular conversation than an interview.
Hi
True!
Mark Ruffalo is so dear, so sincere, so kind, so wonderful, so talented, just give him his Oscar already .😊
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
He's a terror supporter

Mark Ruffalo really admires RDJ, and it makes RDJ slightly uncomfortable even though he's touched by it, and the whole thing is more warm than I was expecting.
Such an intelligent, empathetic, genuine conversation between two fantastic actors and people. Really great episode.
Both look fat, unfortunately…
Didn’t Mark Ruffalo openly mourn the death of a convicted child predator on his Twitter? And gave him a nickname as well? “Jojo”.

Mark telling RDJ he has nothing to prove to anyone was just beautiful. Wow, what a huge conversation filled with heart and genuine care. ❤
The original cast or OG Avengers friendship is what made those ealier Marvel movies so much fun. You could just feel the love and respect they had for one another. This was a great interview or better yet, a great conversation between friends.
Hit the nail on the head as to what the current ones are missing. Which isn't to say the current line of cast members don't like or respect each other, but it's just not the same 😭 😂
You can feel the same comfort and affection in Scarlett's Actors on Actors with Chris Evans.
yeah, but like Mark and Robert - even more so - Scarlett and Chris knew each other before Marvel@@isadorasandri6682
There’s something about this conversation that makes me want to cry. They’re both so beautiful and talented and humble and don’t realize how wonderful they individually are (to an extent). I’ve loved them both for so so long and seeing them speak about their long lasting friendship, praising the other, etc. is just so wonderful. ❤
Seriously, you can just see in their eyes how much they care about each other
@@healingvisioner1 Thanks for your love and support and care on my work I really want to use this medium to appreciate everyone of you out there ❤️❤️feel free to send a friend request if you wish to chat with me.
i fricking love RDJ. but it seems funny having tony stark being described as humble.
44:05 I loved how Mark said “I didn’t see you Robert Downey Jr” because I watched the entire movie not knowing Strauss was Robert Downey Jr until afterwards. He was just that good. A phenomenal performance it was…the stillness and subtlety of it all was just impeccably orchestrated. Well done…just well done, sir.
I knew it was Robert but I forgot it was him because he portrayed the character so well. He didn't use any of the usual facial expressions and mannerisms. A really excellent accomplishment.
I might be reading too much into this, but RDJ’s reaction at that part makes it seem like Ruffalo’s words were really touching to hear for something pretty deeply meaningful to him (RDJ) enough for him to let his guard down a bit in front of the cameras, and then he catches himself and plays it off. Very interesting sequence from him
The mark of a deep friendship between two people is when they don't have to hyper-act around each other. I love that RDJ is his true self with Mark, not having to worry about putting a Tony Stark personality when he's with acquaintances, hard relate and love them both.
totally !
Well said !!!
forsooth, that's why he's the greatest man alive
You do realize RDJ is litterly Tony Stark in real life right?
The MARK of a deep friendship
RDJ didn't just start the MCU but you can see he inspired the other actors , attracted them to the projects, and then got them all going and wanting to be on their A game.
Thank you RDJ - that run where each MCU movie after another kept amping up the hype train was some of the best movie going experiences I can remember at the theater
This comment kind of explains why some new MCU projects are subpar. There isn't much of a connection between the cast like before. Like GOTG3 did well cause its the same cast and they know each other really well...but others like the marvels are just actors acting y'know. Tells a lot.
@senaegbem9598 I mean thats a really small factor it's just meh writing usually
@@senaegbem9598Or the eternals, just actors acting, like ugh....
I agree with this so much. My son, who is only 11 and was barely alive for most of the Infinity Saga refuses to watch any more Marvel movies after Endgame bar the two Spiderman movies. He based this decision solely on the fact that RDJ is no longer a part of the franchise.
Great choice mate hahahaha even i already knew black widow still fails if it still airs in the summer of 2020 no covid lol @@cmt89497
Not only RDJ complimented Mark Ruffalo, but he also praised Emma Stone and Robert Pattinson, says how much of a film admirer he is. Big fan of both RDJ and MR.
I love when rdj stops cracking jokes and becomes serious for a second. He’s so well spoken and smart and appreciative of his colleagues and says so many interesting and insightful things. Yeah he is probably Tony Stark forever, for us and for the next generation and he probably realises this. But the fact that he keeps pushing himself higher and higher when as Mark said there’s nothing left to prove is admirable and inspiring. He was so open about his doubts to act out of marvel again and he did a freaking amazing job. He deserves this Oscar as no one else this year. And coming back to the old theme, his story is undoubtedly the greatest redemption arc a man could ask for.
It's nice to see him be serious. It would be great to see more of what the real Robert is like. I've always loved the gentleness and how affectionate he is with people. He really wants to connect with people. I would love to have him for a friend.
I think RDJ is so much of a better actor than is required for the Tony Stark character, I turned off the 1st Iron Man movie partway through. It just annoyed me so much.
@@jillmcleod6450there’s very few actors that I deem my “favourite” these days but Robert most certainly is one of them . He’s an actor that I’d love to have as a friend as well.
@@fiwebster9814 You turned off IRONMAN?
The first think I always see in Mark R. is his warmth. The kindness. With Robert D., it's the strenght of a survivor. Both wonderful, very talented people.
Honestly my favorite part of this interview is towards the beginning, when Robert and Mark are talking about feeling like they have to prove themselves to people. Mark tells Robert that he doesn’t need to do that, Robert brings up his Dad, and Mark says that he did and in a beautiful way. I don’t know why that moment sticks out to me so much. Maybe it’s because it’s comforting to know that even this great guy I look up to who is almost in his 60’s still feels like he needs the approval of his parents and is still at least a bit insecure about it, or maybe it’s because Mark was being such a caring friend in that moment saying that he did get acceptance from his Dad and that the documentary Sr. was a beautiful film. I haven’t seen many people talk about that moment, but it stuck out to me so much that I had to get my thoughts out there. I love these two, this interview was amazing, I hope they work together again soon ❤️
This!

7:24 is when the moment of Mark telling Robert he doesn’t need to prove himself starts, but the overall topic of feeling like they need to prove themselves starts at 4:10
Not sure if just good editing by Variety, but love the slight quiver in RDJ's lip when he responded "sure".
Agreed
I think this is by far the most intense discussion on acting I’ve seen in these interviews. All while extremely scintillating and liberating thoughts being shared without any filler. Outstanding work Variety. Cannot wait for more to come.
It is so wholesome to see the genuine appreciation and friendship RDJ and Mark had for each other. Respect!
Agreed 1000%. This is the best one I’ve seen yet!
The Bryan Cranston and Jason Segal one from a while back is my all time favorite but this is up there.
That one gets very deep and it’s so warm throughout. Highly recommend.
Also pretty much any time Bradley Cooper does a podcast or something like these he comes of as so raw. Curious if his new one continues that trend.

This one made me truly emotional. I felt like this was a personal conversation between two close friends and I’m glad we were able to hear it. The admiration from Mark to Rob is just wholesome

Unfortunately ted is not a place that the same place as it once was. Look up Coleman hughes talk on color blindness. His talk was censored at first and he had to go through many hurdles to get it published.
That's actually a great idea. He has a lot to say and that might be a decent forum as he isn't great with some interviewers.
RDJ is such a fantastic and empathetic communicator. He gets his own thoughts across so succinctly and clearly and always remembers to bring the other person into the conversation as well. And there's also the fact that he's quick-witted and hilarious
He would make a great talk show host

Omg this is worded so well the last time I heard the word "Succinctly" was from Sir Reginald Hargreaves's mouth from Umbrella Academy! When he put Diego down at the dinner table. Exact words were More succinctly, a man in over his head.

He gives great speeches too. So effortlessly funny. I could listen to him talk all day.
44:00-44:40 Man Marks compliment is so spot on. I love how RDJ reacted to it as well. You can tell he really appreciated it. Both amazing actors

I met Mark Ruffalo once at a company presentation event. He is such a nice genuine guy. I remember walking into the room to sit. There were other actors involved in the presentation. When I waked in all the people were taking their seat and there was this guy just walking around among us regular people lol. He walks up to me and says Hi! I shake his hand and he says I'm Mark nice to meet you! It was Mark Ruffalo hanging with the audience of people before they started!

I was on the brink of tears with this one. Not just for the genuine compassion and reverence these two have for each other, but for their heartfelt love of film/theatre.
Welcome Major Gay.
Apparently, when you don't understand somebody's sensitivity, emotional depth, empathy and confidence, then of course you feel that the first order of business is to mock them, attempt to belittle and deride an entire type of human being in an attempt to use that group, a group which obviously frightens you and causes you to feel uncomfortable, in order to insult the individual who made you feel uncomfortable in the first place, in a pathetic attempt to try to make yourself feel superior, which to all who are watching you, shows you to be just the opposite. No doubt! True believer since 1976! Believe the hype.
Ruffalo was awful as the hulk and the worst MCU casting BY FAR, because they usually cast really well. Norton's Banner was a million times better than Ruffalos and i feel like most OG "True Believers" would agree with that.
@@nunyabizwacks6711BOOOO this man and his comment!👎lol jokes aside (and the fact that you chose to be relatively negative on a positive thread...), your comment withstands in terms of Norton being and overall "better representation of the character", that does not negate the chemistry Downey and Ruffalo shared on screen in any capacity. They gave us some of the best friendship, engagement and in many, ways immense character growth, in the series. It still shows itself in their actual friendship now. 8:50 The part where Mark is talking about RDJ's performance in Oppenheimer, to see him so complimentary of RDJ and almost admiring his work, shows how much respect and love they have for each other. Love it!!
For some reason my heart went out for Robert Downey Jr. when he was going through his struggles. I saw his pain and he had character even then. I don’t know of any other actor that has impressed me more than him. He is an amazing man. Mark Ruffalo has had a lot of pain and struggles too but it’s been private so you didn’t see it play out in a public way. He’s amazing too. They are both sweet and humble.

I agree and Robert's handled his recovery with grace and humility, which is most likely why he has been able to maintain his sobriety. Not many people could or have handled it with as much dignity. ❤
what I love about this conversation is that it reminds me of being on my art degree and listening to sculptors and painters talk about their craft and how they got to their end pieces. These two might be huge names now, and they may be part of this behemoth called the Marvelverse, but they began as indie darlings and as craftsmen. And I see in this conversation that a lot of their bond is based on still being able to see that indie darling craftsman in the other, even as they are also one of the biggest and best known faces on the planet. Two men who truly inspire awe in each other, are comfortable being vulnerable together, and who continue to be curious about, and deeply in love with what they do.
Thank you for this conversation, truly.
the deep respect they have for each other, this extremely honest conversation is inspiring, warm and absolutely stellar. this side of Downey is not something we get on camera often; whoever did this pairing was absolutely on point (totally helps that i’ve such a huge crush on Ruffalo 🤭)! this intense discussion of their jobs and artistry is so refreshing and i hope to see more of these in the days to come.
Mark has such a beautiful way of making every description seem so artful and potent. He makes it so easy to visualize and see the importance of what he speaks about and it's so enjoyable. Robert is also very calculated in his speech but his is almost more seasoned and pinpointed in explanation. Both are very genuine and heartfelt. 2 brilliant actors!
What an incredible pair. I love how attentive they are to each other's stories and how closely they listen to them. You can see in their eyes how fond they are of one another. I love this interview so much. So inspiring
7:45 For just a brief moment you can see the pain in Downey's eyes, staring off into the distance, looking past Ruffalo, slightly trembling as he thinks about his father... You can just see how much deep routed pain he feels inside. He's been through so much yet he has become a man who so so many people love, admire and respect. He's so funny, so kind, so loving, so talented and so incredibly humble. I don't respect a lot of celebrities but I respect him so much for the person who he is. He is a hero both on and off the big screen. He does not look down on others because he knows what it's like to be at your lowest point, to hurt, to feel broken. RDJ is and Ruffalo are the types of people that we should all strive to be like.
The way these two look at each other, support each other, genuinely admire and love each other is simply beautiful. And a powerful example of brotherhood friendship. I just want to hug them both!
Of all the things they said you can clearly see how passionate they are about good acting and directing and just good cinema. When RDJ said that all genre are hard when done right, that is so true and so respectful, especially considering how much comedy or romance is diminished as less then other genre like thriller. So much love so much respect just a delight
25:05 "Seriously Robert...". Look at Robert's face. I think its real, felt real and was kindly express and received with doubt/humbleness. Great dialogue.
I love the genuine friendship between these two, you can tell they both really care about each other
For actors who have known each other for so long and have worked on MCU for so long, you know all their words are genuinely from the heart. What a beautiful friendship.

Robert Downey Jr did such a good job in Oppenheimer , for me him and Cillian Murphy were the best among the cast , even though his most iconic character was indeed Iron Man , his best acting for me was Oppenheimer
His best acting is Kirk Lazarus as Sgt. Lincoln Osiris as Lead Farmer.

The connection between these two, despite being so inherently different at the core of their being, is really touching to see. You can see that they are more than friends They are part of each other's tribe. And yet the conversations they have about the art of acting should be required viewing for young actors who want to create great characters, not just make movies and money. I agree, I think Robert sometimes hides behind his false bravado to hide the fact that he still has insecurities despite all that he's accomplished. He is human after all. When he was on Jimmy Kimmel and talking about taking a beta blocker before the Emma's. He talked about being nervous and Jimmy was surprised and Robert said "I am a human". MUCH more engaging than GQ's Scorcese and Chalamet chat. RDJ doesn't forget that the audience is there, even though he's open and full of praise for Ruffalo, and he carefully grooms the conversation to hit all the places he wants it to go.

End of an era. Film historians will look back on that as the most successful run of comic book films of all time.
A pleasure to watch these two amazing friends talk about their work. So humble and affectionate towards each other.
The part where Mark compliments Robert on how in Oppenheimer, he plays a character that is so different from what he usually does, I think that holds a lot of significance. Despite proving to us countless times that he is an actor who is more than capable in his craft, Downey still is ready to push himself and do more characters, it strongly lies in in his core to be an actor. I think the most frightening part of being an actor is when people start looking at your characters as a version of your off-screen persona, like the time when boundaries between him and his character iron man was so blurred in general, it was evident that nothing would be able to surpass his time as iron man. When an actor plays a role, they want to be recognized as that character in that particular film, then move on to the next part. But I can't even imagine the kind of turmoil a passionate actor like him had to go through when he played this character for such a long period of time. The magnanimity of tony stark was befitting to Downey's real life personality. He basically made that character as an extension of himself. I love tony stark to death, he has been an important figure throughout my teenage life and adulthood, his character is almost reverential to most of our generation. It was very difficult to evade the imposition of this character on to Downey's real life personality. To have one singular act counted has your legacy as a thought can be scary. But then he turns around to play Levi Strauss and it was phenomenal, easily one of the best performances of the year. So when Ruffalo mentions that he delivered that performance with all the details packed in with a crisp, basically us audiences not seeing the character for HIM but for what the character is, I think its a huge compliment. Its true that his cultural footprint will be huge as a part of the marvel franchise, but it won't be limited to that only. He has delivered some of the best performances that need to be revisited again and again, and I think that is essentially what makes him one of the finest actors around the world.
Hi
Too much words bro
You put into words what I couldn't, it was nice to read your comment. Have a great day/night!
@@メランコリ私の友達 thank you! I wish you a great time as well!
Hello.
Thanks for the love and support. What's your real name, and where are you do you have line sent me your line ID so we can communicate with each other okay
This is such an effortless conversation for them. It feels like they would have the same dialog if the cameras weren't there, with a few added expletives perhaps. I could listen to this many times over.
Awwww... this by far is the most heartwarming Actors on Actors pairing. I love it.
Idk if you read these Variety but if you have like 2 more hours of this that you think people wouldn't be interested in... please release it. This is the best thing ever, and proof that you don't need someone asking dumb questions to make an interview flow. You just need two people who respect and admire each other to sit and have a conversation while you film it. 10/10
We should start a petition :). Id totally watch every second of film of these.
I wish this were longer for sure. I could listen to both of them talk about their experiences with film forever. I’ve always enjoyed listening to actors talk about all their previous roles and what they went through to get to that place and state of mind to play them. I have yet to see Poor Things but I loved the trailer and got so stoked when I saw Mark. I want to see it even more now. It was honestly the best indirect promotion for a movie ever.
This puts RDJ in a new light. He isn't "Tony Stark (RDJ)," the self-aggrandizing prick of the upper echelon, he is FULL ON fanboying Mark Ruffalo! Loved every second of this "Actors on Actors."
Just pure friendship and the genuine respect they have for each other seeping through the entire conversation. Most favorite episode so far.
Perfect conversation among two brilliant actors. They give each other space and time to answer with no interruptions as is so pervasive now, and they're both obviously so pleased when complimented by the other. A very genuine exchange. Loved every minute.
at around 26 minutes when he talks about the cold war is such an amazing motivation. The time Robert lived through during the cold war and studying it before even playing Strauss makes his performance 10x better. It is beautiful.
This was a lot deeper than I expected and I’m crying for some reason.
It is such an honor to be living during these spectacular actor's lifetimes. It's been amazing to see the career arc for both Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo.
Mark and Robert are just legends. I have so much respect for these two human beings.
The tone in which Ruffalo is speaking sound like so carefully put together and in a very kindly manner. You can feel the love and admiration he has for RDJ.

This has been such an extreme pleasure to view. To see this beautiful friendship, so casually conversed and uplifting, has enthralled me. Not to mention the adoration of cinema shared between the two is so apparent. I take profound delight in knowing that the actors that I’ve come to hold in such high esteem truly love the art as I do. The sparks of joy that we see, for their individual craft as well as glimpses into their personal lives as friends, has led me to appreciate them even more than I previously thought possible. Wonderful show.

Is it appropriate to give a standing ovation to a 1 on 1 sit down interview? This was tremendous!
Every time I watch Robert Downey Jr speak I Just get new words added to my vocabulary. He is just amazing.
He does have a flowery and very extensive vocabulary. In another life he was an author or a Journalist no doubt. 😄
He is wonderfully well spoken.🇨🇦
Goes to show what reading can do for you!❤
This was the best Actors on Actors Ive seen yet. Their friendship, love and mutual respect comes shining through. We got to see their true personalities emerge and it was evident that was not acting on their part, it was just them having a conversation. I loved it all and would watch every second of footage @vanityfair had that was on the cutting room floor so to speak.
What a joy. To watch two people who respect each other and have such a genuine friendship. Lovely.
what a beautiful nuance conversation between people who have known, and understand each other throughout various phases of their lives.
This is one the highly intelligent conversations I’ve heard from 2 talented individuals that admire each other; I love how they compliment each other and the complicity between them. Amazing to see.
21:38 we all have that one best friend that we're a little bit in love with, and here's the visual representation of robert being head over heels for mark 🥺 i love them
Impeccable chemistry. One of the best Actors on Actors.
This was just the most delightful, illuminating and generous conversation between two friends who are immersed in their craft. Thank you.
I sat and watched this whole exchange. It looks just how admiration, comradery, & long friendship looks like. Such amazing actors and we get to witness them in real time!
