Scenes like this are what make TNG one of the finest pieces of drama ever on television. It remains relevant in its topics and its message to us all. Picard is an inspiration.

Personally I saw this episode more about the dangers of letting people with extreme beliefs twist good ideals into something darker, as well as manipulating the mob with honeyed words into witch hunts against people who dont think like you do. Could certainly reference certain political groups but I think the warning really applied to everyone regardless of if you are right or left.

The reason why Satie is another member of Starfleet, seen as an ally at first, and so critically why Wharf buys into her actions is because those we work with and agree with _can be turned_ and fight for things you and they are against. To demonstrate how not even the most advance system humanity has invented for itself and the people living in it are not immune from *self-examination.* Any ideology is susceptible to this kind of abuse, especially ones you already abide. When Worf tells Picard that if he "were any other man I would kill you where you stand", that scene and the emotions it evokes are earned because of the work scenes like this put into character building. Worfs vulnerability, self doubt and remorse in this scene always gets me. I think this troubles him to the very core of his klingon soul. For how can you do the honorable thing if you can't even distinguish it from the wicked? It's as if it saps him of strength and purpose.

I fear in today's world there are a lot of people ready to crusade against a group of people given the opportunity, even if it's just to momentarily attack someone who to them most intensely broadcasts the example of what they so much want to attack. People are blinded by their success and comfort, forgetting where they came from, no appreciation of the struggles of others to make sense of things. Sure, there are people who enjoy tearing things down and attacking indiscriminately, and those people should be corrected if only to keep them from putting others in their own bad headspace. But people who create notions of superiority for themselves and invite scrutiny upon people trying to truly figure things out that don't have so much privilege or advantage is a poisonous seed from which meaningless prejudice grows. As if any prejudice is meaningful... what right do they have to tell anyone how anything is to be figured out? It's troubling that the only way Satie was revealed was by losing her cool - many people on their own witch hunt are much more calm and controlled.
Truly sad that Patrick Stewart became the very thing Picard warned Worf about with his abominable hijacking of Star Trek. Remember how quick humanity is to forget. You might keep in mind something truly important.
Sadly Patrick Stewart needs to rewatch this entire episode. He needs to understand that he’s become the opposite side. The Establishment has got him to believe just as Worf did. At least I hope it’s that and not that he didn’t believe in the basic morals that Picard stood for.
This presents as a sacred moral truth, about defending human rights at all costs. But compare it to the episode “Force of Nature” in season 7, when they adopt a speed limit to prevent irreversible damage to space from warp drives. The Drumhead Picard might see it as a villainous scheme, of course he is too reasonable for that and changes beliefs when presented with new evidence. He takes responsibility for his actions, rather than calling it a witch-hunt.

I'm a huge TNG fan, but I strongly dislike this episode, because of the dualism in it. Star Trek TNG is about moral doubt, grey areas, trying to do what's right while there is no absolute right or wrong. So it disappointed me to hear Picard talking about evil at all, but definitely that he talked about it as if there's demons in this world (universe) that you have to recognise in order to do the right thing. I find that this episode, especially this scene, goes against what I love most about TNG and about Picard.
But there is a right and wrong in TNG. Right is usually the fundamental principles of the Federation which Captain Picard believes in, namely tolerance, equality, diplomacy, personal rights and freedom, peace, doing no harm and using violence only as a last resort and in defense, scientific exploration and progress with the purpose to make life more enjoyable for everyone. Some of these principles were threatened by Sati, someone who probably believed in all of them and swore to uphold them. Her means to find the ones that would disregard them became more and more radical over time out of frustration because of the sheer impossibility of exposing the ones that hide well, without disregarding said principles herself. And over time her disappointed idealistic views and all her frustration gave rise to fanaticism and she became what she swore to defend the Federation against.
You missed the point completely. The whole episode is about the danger of everything being seen as black and white, of ideology being twisted to the point that there can be no exceptions.

I'm a huge TNG fan, but I strongly dislike this episode, because of the dualism in it. Star Trek TNG is about moral doubt, grey areas, trying to do what's right while there is no absolute right or wrong. So it disappointed me to hear Picard talking about evil at all, but definitely that he talked about it as if there's demons in this world (universe) that you have to recognise in order to do the right thing. I find that this episode, especially this scene, goes against what I love most about TNG and about Picard.
But there is a right and wrong in TNG. Right is usually the fundamental principles of the Federation which Captain Picard believes in, namely tolerance, equality, diplomacy, personal rights and freedom, peace, doing no harm and using violence only as a last resort and in defense, scientific exploration and progress with the purpose to make life more enjoyable for everyone. Some of these principles were threatened by Sati, someone who probably believed in all of them and swore to uphold them. Her means to find the ones that would disregard them became more and more radical over time out of frustration because of the sheer impossibility of exposing the ones that hide well, without disregarding said principles herself. And over time her disappointed idealistic views and all her frustration gave rise to fanaticism and she became what she swore to defend the Federation against.
You missed the point completely.
The whole episode is about the danger of everything being seen as black and white, of ideology being twisted to the point that there can be no exceptions.
