He made such classic hits, but I can't imagine how many more he would have made had he not been taken away from us so early. Rest in peace Marvin Gaye.
My man is DOIN' IT in that red jacket!!! Ha haaaaaaaa!! Do it Marvin!!! Makes me wanna write somethin' in this same tempo. Clarence Clemons twin on sax. LOL! Who is that beautiful conga player? Marvin goes to work on his feet at 7 minutes!!! AWESOME!
Still listening in 2025 to this song. It seems like everyone was having a good time. This is when music was music, and of course Marvin was a great singer and entertainer.
Yes, no kidding! I was living in Zurich at the time and I used to go to Montreux every Summer. This was Marvin's only performance in Switzerland ever and as you can see he killed it! They played all his hits and then some..... That same year (1980) I also saw B.B. King, Van Morrison, The Brecker Brothers., James Brown and many more. For 2 and a half weeks it's just one great concert after another, and often the Performers end up jamming together onstage. The best Music Festival I've ever seen!
That's Sandra Lee Akaka (not Shiela E, as many have guessed). Akaka is living in Hawaii and still playing percussion (facebook.com/photo?fbid=10208763761474226&set=a.1585569401983). Although it appears she's also selling skin care products on the side. On her Facebook page, she says that was her "first big gig out."
The whole band is tight! And I love the male backing singers just giving it their all! Loving their moves too! Thank the Lord for video footage like this, so everyone can enjoy Marvin's legacy!
Aretha Franklin is my most favorite female singer of all time...Marvin Gaye is my most favorite male singer of all time. All Hail The Queen and King of Soul! =)
I really love them too. Both of them, alongside Little Richard, Mahalia Jackson and Patti Labelle, their voices and music are all about joy, something divine words cant explain.
First listened to this song in 1977 on the radio then my older brothers' 45" LP I was 11 years old I haven't been able to get it out my mind April 2 would have been marvin's 83rd birthday April 1st is the 28th anniversary of marvin's murder Marvin changed soul music forever with his hypnotic voice he really was my generation's legacy of r&be songs r.i.p. Marvin you're still admired & missed very much!😓🙏
Glad the mixing desk eventually realised that David Majal was trying to deliver a sax solo (or just about to finish, anyway) the rhythm guitars and horns get a better deal. Sandra Akaka can sure hit those congas. Could have just gone on for another 8 and half minutes I guess...thanks for posting.
awesome voice!!! LUV Marvin Gaye...I am starting to realize that the majority of the great artists and musicians and vocalists have passed on..BUMMER..
We play on $3000 set with all the toys every Sunday at jam night in snowy Edmonton ( we even have wind chimes / vibra slap / shakers / blocks / tambourines ! Rock on !
This song is my ringtone on my phone. Marvin Gaye is timeless. I remember dancing to this song while I was laboring with my first child...1994! LOL! It was still funky then and is still funky NOW!
Marvin Gaye !!!!!!! The background singers, band of this video are absolutely ELECTRIC. Wished I could've been there !!!! Thanks for this. Also this highlighted Marvin's expertise at the art of singing "falsetto"...Gotta shake your booty to this !
Dedicated to my ex-husband, the father of my two children, now sadly deceased, RIP HP,Jr.! The trumpeter, with the green shirt is now trumpter for the incomparable D'Angelo, working also in the horn-section with Roy Hargrove !
Eu nao sei como estas pessoas assistiram esta performance sentadas!!!! Fim de 2024 e eu as 1:10hs da madrugada dançando! Impossível ficar parado com esta musica! Marvin é MARAVILHOSO ❤
This is soooo classic! I love it! The background singers were jamming! I love Marvin Gaye - he was my mom's favorite is this was her favorite song! Makes me dance anytime i hear it!
I think the name of the song is "Time". It is from the "Here, My Dear" album (1978). The entire album is about his marriage to Anna Gordy, their breakup and his new love... Truly compelling listening.
I would love to know who all is still alive from this band, including back up singers. This was such a great ensemble. I've watched this performance soooo many times and it still makes me smile and dance!!
This was the classic dance song from the late 70's and it still is as far as I'm concerned. If you can dance all the way through, you are really in shape!!!
Wow time warp! This awesome, even though this came out 2 years before I was born, I was raised on Marvin. Seeing videos like this makes me miss the original MTV lol. 80's live on!!
If I have to try myself, I will, but we need another extremely talented entertainer like Marvin Gaye. That's what the 2000's and 2010's need. Enough yapping aside; Marvin's THE MAN. Wonderful voice, amazing songwriter, and I'll be damned; the Motown girls say he danced like a white boy but I can't say he ain't gettin down as we speak Not to mention he decided one night at a party to record this hit?? 'Nuff said
I love to see the live performances where they have male dancers and background singers instead of how it is now with the half-naked hoochies on the stage. Love this! Old school at it's best!!!!
Back in the late 70's, I worked the 3-11 shift at the factory. We'd head to the bar and play pinball for beers. When this song came on....I was in the GROOVE!! Rackin up the extra balls....I LOVE this song!! RIP Marvin!
Yes Talent speaks Volumes and that is no longer what we get.We are being Ripped off With the constant barrage of Wannabes that get ridiculous cash for Drilling into our 🪥 Teeth!, Or just screeching Nonsensical blobs!😊
This is THE song!! This takes me back. This was the kick off song for our summer cookouts that lasted ALL night until the morning. When this song was played the party was about to get CRANKED up!
Dinguerie mais vraiment une dinguerie un artist e d une classe exceptionnelle heureusement que Marvin a fait partie de ce monde un grand merci pour tous ces émotions quand j écoute Marvin je pleure obliger !!!
Marvin is the greatest. How many artists has he inspired? The voice for the people. Still is for me. Pay attention young fools this is what music really is.
Thanks SOOOO much for this video. Genius and a GREAT talent caught in a moment of time. Besides Marvin, the best part of this are the background singers. Soooooooo slick and right on. Wouldn't expect anything less from those backing Marvin up! Makes me also realize how much Marvin is missed. No one around now is worthy to even wipe his butt!!!!
Damn I am too young....Wasn't even born when he died....Music was so great back then, too bad I couldn't experience it. Well, happily there's still some 70's bands out there which I have been able to see live :)
Oh my gosh I just loved this song. Marvin was the man.He could sang about love like no other and get down like this.Totally an amazing talent who is missed everyday. There will never be another Marvin Gaye.Todays music just doesn't cut it. Pure Garbage. Give me the 50s-80s any day. The best music era there was. It’s the thing isn’t it , Lennon, Hendrix , Cooke , redding..
Could go on, what might they have done
The greatest R&B entertainer ever. Unmatched stage presence.
AWESOME!

I love that everyone on stage looks like they're having the time of their lives! I want to be in a band like that. :)
Yes, no kidding! I was living in Zurich at the time and I used to go to Montreux every Summer. This was Marvin's only performance in Switzerland ever and as you can see he killed it! I'm amazed at the 15 piece set! Impressive! Awesome performance. Thanks for uploading. Sam Alix
Put this on at a party and no matter the ages, everybody's going to groove, the cow bell and the walking bass is infectious!
I love the message of this song, too...learning to shed one's inhibitions and dance because you can't stop yourself from it! So awesome!
He was one of the few R&B artists in the USA to use CONGAS (Latin Percussion) in his music. Today's artist don't even know what a conga is.
I thought the congas were African.
We play on $3000 set with all the toys every Sunday at jam night in snowy Edmonton ( we even have wind chimes / vibra slap / shakers / blocks / tambourines ! Rock on !

It is African. This person obviously isn't educated on where instruments come from. 😂
The congas are from Africa, since pre colonialism.
