When I lived in midtown Memphis my next door neighbor was a 80 years old woman driving her big old Cadillac when she had a flat in 1981.Some black man offered to change her flat but she was scare and he finally talk to her long enough and said he was a preacher and that work. He change the flat in a new suit which was all wrinkle up when he got through and she try to pay him and he didn’t take it. He told her his name and it didn’t register with the old lady until somebody told her that was Al Green the famous soul singer. He is a great man and a great Christian.
I saw Al Green midday on a Glastonbury Sunday. I am not confident I'd been to sleep in the previous 48 hours. There was a lot of dance music and a lot of rock'n'roll. It's also true that my and my friends where in a HIGHly emotional state. The reverend came on in an all white suit bearing roses to share his gift and his love. It was honestly the greatest thing I ever saw or heard. Could soothe any soul. A gift from god.
That’s his stage presence to give out roses to the ladies. I’ve seen Al in concerts so many times, 2 times I wanted my money back because his voice was totally gone. That’s one thing we take away from him is when he’s hot, he’s hot and he’s gained 100lbs. He can’t hold those notes long with the weight gain. I have every album he made. 💜💜💜💜💜🎤
Before you comment on what i am going to say .. Listen to some of his music .BB King said he is one of the best blues song writers he has ever met . That hearing his music you think he has lived a life time . And at the time he was maybe 20 . Johnny Lang You hear a lot of the great band s and the soulful vocals from the 70 s in his music today .
He was truly gifted and not living right and look what happened ! he got hot grits all over him and his girlfriend - friend killed her self with his gun
Simon Cowell use to say on Idol, “This kind of music is either in you or it’s not. You can’t fake it.” This video proves his point fifty times over, so genuine.
Simon Cowell is a PR man, a businessman, he markets things. He wouldn't know good music if it slapped his bollocks with a ruler. Al Green is Music, the shit Simon sells isn't.
This is the best performance of this song I've ever heard!! The thing that amazes me the most about Al Green is that he basically keeps it simple. He doesn't try too hard, and yet he's always as soulful as they come. True legend!
GrandsonofSoul 60 yr anniversary of The Apollo is the Best Bestest version. OMG. This is good but that made me sorta jump up and half hide behind the couch-- it was sooo great!
AND this is 23 years after the song was originally released! Not many artists bring even more energy after so many years. Also amazing how he exudes joy - look at the band - and how much they are into it, pretty amazing considering how many people have they played with
At 2:30 Al sings, i’ll never be untrue “that’s for Teenie” he is referring to Teenie Hodges, who cowrote several of the amazing songs that Al sings, and is also the uncle of rap artist, Drake. Al had a falling out with the Hodges brothers, and when they finally had a concert and brought their love back together, I was at that concert backstage. It was Memphis in may 1993 if memory serves. Al, mistook me for a promotions rep from Columbia records who I closely resemble and when the concert was over, Al hugged me and everyone around Al embraced all of us and walked us downstairs into a small dressing room. I could not remove myself from being surrounded with people that were ushering us on, so I had to stay there and experience Al praying for several minutes about his gratitude for all that had taken place. It was real y’all.
One of my favorite songs of all times. My husband and I dubbed this when we met as our love songs. Thanks Al. We love you forever and a day ❤️ 💛 💗 💓 ❤. Amen ❤️
At 2:24 he said "This is for Willie Mitchell". Willie Mitchell was the talented soul music producer who arranged and produced Al Green's hits in the 1970's at HI Records in Memphis, Tennessee.
Remember seeing this when it aired in Australia as a kid. Pure magic. One of the greatest songs in the history on Letterman’s Late Show at the peak of it’s popularity.
WOW! This is what I call annointed singing! I had goosebumps throughout this song. I literally went crazy towards the end of the song. Al green definitely reached our souls with this song. I only just came across this video now. Absolutely loved it❤❤❤
Every time I listen to any Al Green it always reminds me of my much loved Brother Neil from Southampton UK who passed away with the coronavirus this year 2020. Your Brother Merv
Man, that’s back in the day when music was REAL and it actually had soul you could feel down in your bones! What happened to us? We’ve lost our minds!!
I literally have chills listening to this. The joy on his face - the joy on the band's faces! - is intoxicating and it's just what this cruel world needs. And finishes with with "Here I Am Come and Take Me"?? What on earth did I do to deserve this?
This is what talent and hard work will do for you Al Green came from a very poor family with a lot of children and he still managed to break through😊😊😊😊
Happy 75th Birthday.. Albert Leornes Greene April 13, 1946.. You are the male smooth soul singer of all time. Pure god givin' talent.. Bless you Brother..

I am only 32 years old (born 1987) so Al Green was way before my time but one thing my mother done right by me is taught me to appreciate good music and talented musicians/artists (if that ALL she did). Al Green, Ottis Redding and way too many others is what I have playing in my home and I make sure my children (ages 10&12) know what real music is and to respect and appreciate the rare talent that you hardly find now a days. Some new artist I love but "oldies" will always be playing in my home.
Coming back to this video in the future again and again and again. There is another live video from the 70's of Al singing it with soft passion. Edit: Love that "don't fall!! Ha! Ha!"

(Back when Dave was NOT tired of his own show!)
Dave's genuine excitement/happiness is clear and overflowing!!!!
Those were good days
Props to the band, as well, who are obviously aware of the great moment they are part of.
Adorable
Apologies to Doc Serverinsen, but Paul's band was by far the best ever seen on late night TV.
