Line from the book: "Saphira's growth was explosive." That was supposed to be metaphorical. But this freaking film took it literally. (slams face into desk)
@@aconfusedbuzzard526 I facepalm so hard at that. Even Hiccup was afraid of Toothless at first meeting before eventually working his way to earn the Dragon's trust and managing to muster his courage and befriended the Night Fury while making a new prosthetic for his tail.
@@timoylumontad3920 true true, one of the reasons I love both: they're HUMAN, and no matter how much a human (myself included) loves dragons, when faced with one, they will 100% shit their pants 😂
@@aconfusedbuzzard526 Indeed. You know of Fairy Tail where kids were raised by Dragons? Even kids would be afraid of Dragons due to how big and intimidating they are.
My favorite scene in the book was completely voided by this movie. It was the scene when Saphira was a few months old and Eragon was trying to name her, he tried all the names he heard from his stories from Brom but none worked because they were all boy names. Eragon finally got it that she was a girl and suggested her names be Saphira, the small dragon squeaking contently. I loved that adorable scene and they just voided it.
And it also begs one important question: If Eragon, who had free wifi chat with her head, couldn't tell her gender, how does a Dragon's inner voice sound like?
@@MrKlausbaudelaire I like to think that the dragons each have their own sounding head voice, but that it develops with age. When the dragons are hatched they probably sound really androgynous.
@@RanchMonarch The third, and technically even the second, book actually mention how each dragon has a different "voice" when they grow older and communicate with other riders/or their own rider! I personally really think it's neat!
@@joseguzman-pk4pf Yeah, their pretty good. I mean for one thing the first one does include Eragon and Saphira actually bonding before she can even speak.
I have read the first one, and have to say; if you like Tolkien, then you will enjoy this series. But I just didn’t see anything new in it. Dragons, swords, elves and magic... I just think these ideas are pretty overused and boring.
Completely agree, made the scene so much stronger. I was a fan of Saphira from the first book and when I saw the movie, and the age jump at the start, I've never been more angry at a film destroying it's own potential.
I disagree. While removing the lines from the dragon would make the movie better, it still wouldn't be watchable. Then again, I read and liked the books, so I take nearly every aspect of this movie as an insult anyway. My bias against it may be playing a role there.
I feel like they could have kept the talking by actually giving her decent dialogue and bonding scenes with Eragon?? In the books they do spend time together, and interact like companions. Some of the dialogue works well either cut or not, but some actual bonding time with them would, y'know, give them an actual dynamic and a chance for actually meaningful lines. Oh, and that age jump (literally) ended up being incredibly stupid. I think we can all agree on that.
i know one way to make the movie watchable (barely), step 1 read the book, step 2 count all the things they did wrong, for laughs at how badly they got it wrong Optional step 3 for 21 or older only turn that into a drinking game, get something light or you will die of alcohol poisoning. Edit Read all 4 books and see how much the movie REALLY F-s the hell out of the plot, Killing the Ra-Zak and one of Eragon's primary motivations was stupid beyond belief. and thats just the tip of the iceberg
You know why I loved the first book so much back when I first read it? In the book, Saphira was NOT some celestial being suddenly growing up with a growl of thunder and suddenly having ALL the information, even though you have no idea where she got all of it. In the movie, as soon as she's grown, she acts like she's been alive for decades and has stories to tell Eragon. In the books, she IS a new born. She behaves like it, and though she ages quite fast at first, it's still that kinda growth spurt which still seemed natural. She had to LEARN new information and about the situation at hand TOGETHER with Eragon; they were on the same level, and they were not only connected through the mind link but also because of what they went through together, learning the same stuff together with no one being advantaged. When Eragon was told that if his dragon would die, he'd suffer unimaginable pain, it was instantly believable and the bare thought of Saphira dying on Eragon seemed devastating because of the bond they developed as equal friends on their journey. The movies completely ruined their relationship and I will never forgive it for that.
Turning a doorstopper of a book into a movie rarely works out for this very reason, you have to condense hundreds of pages of prologue into the first 10-15 minutes of a movie so you can get to the action because they assume the fans already know what's going on and they assume non fans are too dumb to sit through tons of character development without walking out of the theater. They wind up just confusing non fans and pissing off the fans with the flat characters
@@arthas640 ESPECIALLY when it's a generic YA fantasy piece of shit. The movie may be generic, but the book is no less so. Ruby's development with Tarragon has already been done to death in a 1000 other fantasy books, and is still being done. I'm no fan of subversion of expectations, but I would welcome SOME originality...
I will never forget watching this at the movies. There is a scene at the end, where our boy is reflecting on how far he has come from where he started. He looks at his reflection and says " I barely recognize myself", only he's looking at his face reflected in an armor chestplate, and it's all stretched out and funhouse-mirror 🤣 The entire audience laughed. We clearly weren't supposed to. 😕☺
I feel like Eragon is just a typo when someone was typing the word; Dragon. And he was like; Cool name! I'll keep it! The E and the D keys are right next to each other.
I don't want to sound like that guy, but Paolini said he got lucky with that name for that reason AND because it had the words "Era" and "Gone", meaning an era gone by in the story. Before you ask, yes I'm an Inheritance Cycle nerd.
@@KingPopinLockin The "Dragon typo" explanation is much more likely. Anyway, lots of fantasy male names end in "-on", so I wouldn't call a similarity like that a ripoff.
@@KingPopinLockin Eragon is nothing like Aragorn lol. The name "Eragon" is an aptronym based on the word "dragon", and a play on the phrase "an era gone". Bilbo by the way was a name of an Anglo Saxon family pre-dating Tolkien by about 800 years so I guess Tolkien is a thief lol.
And the end credits song was "Keep Holding On" by Avril Lavigne. Because that's how a fantasy film should end: a generic pop song. Wouldn't Lord of the Rings been so much better if Britney Spears were played over the end credits?
Yeah they're improved in the movie, but it's because Saphira herself is so butchered by the adaptation that it's better if she doesn't talk. But she DOES talk in the books and has an actual character.
The book did SO much better with raising the dragon. He actually had to raise her over time, and he named her. Well, sort of. He had to learn about dragon names and tried to give her one, but failed for a while because he thought Saphira was a male. And the whole time, the dragon seemed to be laughing at him until he finally figured it out.
The thing about Eragon: It really was never going to translate from page to screen well. In the book, Saphira speaking was kind of necessary. In the movie, it caused problems because the medium functions differently. The adapters of HTTYD understood that (Toothless speaks in the books, as do all dragons).
THE DRAGONS SPEAK IN HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON BOOKS?!?!?! holy crap that is amazing.... But yep, it would have been awful in the movies. Kudos to Dreamworks
@@aboxinspace And then a kaiju sized dragon with a SUPER tragic backstory starts a dragon rebellion. Just wait till you find out who Fishlegs father is.
But you could have saphira speak only to Eragons Mind much like in the Book. I mean in Lord of the Rings Frodo also hears Suarons Voice only in his head that wouldnt be the problem. The Problem is that the Story has nothing to do with the books.
I hate this movie for what it did to Saphira. She wasn't just some soft-spoken parrot, she was BRUTAL. She was prideful, blunt, hot-headed, and took no shit-which is why she was one of my favorite characters. It's one of the reasons I was glad she could talk in the book, because whenever she spoke, she had something to actually _say_ . She said her opinion and she spared no feelings. Plus: in the books, if the riders die, the dragons live on. The reason why that's interesting is-Saphira had repeatedly threatened to _murder_ those who endangered Eragon. Not because their lives were linked, but because she loved him. They might as well have animated her in 2D to match the personality they gave her for the film.
Except Saphira is nothing more than a vain, oversized cat and is largely uninteresting because she usually serves as a mere side-kick for the whiny, sociopathic Eragon. Hell, the whopping few chapters we have of Saphira's perspective mainly has her hanging around, being bored, and missing Eragon. We also learn that she uses hyphens for no reason. So does she call the sun "Great-round-light-in-the-sky" as if she were some native tribesman? Her ego is massive for a character who accomplishes so little compared to most other characters, like Roran or even Nausada, despite being a walking 2000+ pound of muscle with wings. You might say something like "Oh yeah! She destroyed 12 soldiers like they were nothing!!!" First off, this is not a noticeable deed at all. If you were to put yourself in Saphira's biology, you would understand that as a huge creature, you should have no issue with accomplishing this whatsoever. It's like an ant being amazed that a human can carry such a huge orange, easily 20X their body size. Saphira's ego reminds me of a rich kid that inherited their parents wealth. And did Saphira always have something to actually say? Most of the time, she says something wise because Paolini told us she did, he tells us but doesn't show us. When Saphira does actually try to say something "wise," it's pseudo-psychology at best, like the millions of times she tries to tell Eragon not to feel guilty about those he kills, or trying to whisk away very real human emotions of guilt and regret that Eragon may logically feel. So no, I think the movie made the best of what they could work with regarding Saphira. In the books, she absolutely was a soft-spoken parrot most of the time. Most of her time is spent making threats, instead of acting upon them. Another example, near the beginning of the 4th book, Eragon is beaten in a spar around 4 times by some elf I can't remember. She then asks Eragon if she could knock the elf over for him. First off, "knocking over" doesn't sound very brutal, and second off, if she really was the blunt, hot-head that you and Paolini says she is, she would not only knock-over this elf, but send him flying or brutally eat/murder him in some way WITHOUT Eragon's permission, right before turning around and bluntly telling Eragon that he has a long way to go if he wants to survive against any meaningful opponent. As she says many times in the story, she is not beholden to anyone, so they could not consider her a traitor. Sometime in the third book, Nausada acknowledges Saphira could eat her if she desires. I can't think of a single person that was murdered by Saphira that wasn't some generic enemy soldier or one of the main "bad guys" (Wait, did she even kill a named antagonist?) So no, to me, she's just a boring character that has accomplished boring deeds. One last thing about their "relationship," since you've mentioned it. The fact that their friendship is the result of a spell can be viewed as deteriorating from their friendship, and some readers interpret this as that Eragon and Saphira are forced to love one another because they were so closely linked by magic before they even began looking out for one another. /end rant
Wolfun1t You've missed the point entirely as you're using human logic to try and explain the emotions of a non-human creature, one who is prideful simply because it is a genetic trait of her entire species. And just like that, much of your rant is obsolete.
Nah, the best part was when they crossed the desert, and finally reached the mountains. That part when they realise that the sky isnt just white, but its actually a mountain so big that the cant see the top, holy shit that was awesome.
+Adrijana I read the book ages ago, but I can remember that the setting and actual information of the height of the mountains and stuff wasn't actually known too well (Other than "it is big"). You never know how big something is until you see it, and they lived in a medieval age where at most the map shows that it is a mountain region and that's all. Pretty sure you cannot expect the characters to see something amazing that they never imagined and NOT be surprised by it. Hell even if you KNEW how high those mountains are, that doesn't mean you cannot be awed by their sight in real life.. You are finding strange things to be pissed off about.
Nope. The coolest part of the book is when they're travelling over the plains and gale force winds almost break the dragon's wings even though she's walking. That was actually a really awesome few pages that showed the bond between the main characters as well as the vulnerability that comes with youth, even in an animal like a dragon. Shame it was a fluke and Paolini just went back to copying _New Hope_ afterwards.
KoinGaming I remember that part in the first book when Eragon & Murtagh saw the Beor Mountains, they were so big they couldn't even comprehend it at first, they thought they were still looking at the sky/horizon. It was one of my favorite small moments in the book
In the book, when the scene where the uncle dies, Eragon was actually in the house when Dirza's minions came in search of the dragon. Sapphira could sense their coming and came and took Eragon on her back and flew him far away, leaving only the uncle there who perished when the house came down. This was the first time Eragon rode her, and he did so without a saddle. Her scales sliced through his thighs and left him incredibly injured and he had to spend time healing at his cousin Roran's fiance's, giving him time to mourn his uncle and also allowed him to experience a bitterness toward Sapphira that they had to work over, believing that if he had been there when the henchmen attacked, he could have saved his uncle. After that, Eragon was too afraid to attempt to ride the dragon, even after Brom secured for him a saddle and that's why in the movie, they spend a lot of time on horseback instead of riding the dragon. But the movie just cut out all of that and instead, they ride horses just to ride horses and excuse it away by something like "Eragon was afraid of heights" or some crap
Actually, the uncle didn't die right away, he was still alive when Eragon returned and he dragged his uncle to the town. He still ended up dying, but that's impressive as hell
the way it is by default makes it seem like some fan girl was like "WHAT IF HIS DRAGON TALKED IN ALL THE SCENES!!!" but she had no writing skills so just ended up saying the most generic things.... EXCEPT THERE WERE PEOPLE PAID TO MAKE THE DRAGON KEEP HER GENERIC DIALOGUE!!!
Like, my favorite edits from the Critic are: Jeremy Irons: If the dragon is killed, the rider lives on. If the rider dies... Saphira: (looks down, forlorn, and punches everyone watching straight in the feels) and Jeremy Irons: [my dragon] was killed by this sword! Saphira: (glares at sword) Grrrrr >:(
+CJCroen1393 That was pretty good. And of course, if people want Sapphira to talk, that's fine, but don't have her repeat what any other character could just explain. Or have her spout dialogue in every single scene. Have her say things that add more to her character, or that give her more chemistry with Eragon. Pretty much, just have Sapphira talk when it's the right time.
In the book the reader red their inner thoughts and how the communicate this way. I actually don'T think it would be a good idea when Eragon and Saphira just stood their silently and...doing nothing but staring at each other.
Half Aluminum Chemist someone should makes a version where they take out the voice. Also edit it so that it doesn't look like their just awkwardly staring at each other for a long time.
Eragon, as a movie, made me sad. I watched it, thought "okay, fantasy with dragon riders, I can read that". Halfway through the first book (about the time Brom dies), I stopped and thought "Wtf did the movie guys smoke?" While the book series doesn't have any groundbreaking innovation, it is very well written, and you can tell the author put a lot of effort into it. Eragon's relationship with Saphira, their interactions with other characters, and the depiction of the elven and dwarven civilizations later on, they're all interesting and compelling. The lexicons he created, while by no means comparable to, say, Tolkien's (honestly, whose is?), are well defined and depicted, especially the elvish one. At some point, the author tells the story from Saphira's point of view, and you can tell she perceives the world in a very different way. It's a stroke of genius, that sadly doesn't happen enough in the series. My honest recommendation, if you enjoy classical high fantasy, is to give the books a chance. Don't be dissuaded by this half-baked adaptation. Also, try grabbing the PC tie-in. It's surprisingly enjoyable, for a 2006 game.
I enjoyed all three books, however after going out of my way to purchase all three, lost them during a move. Oh well, at least I still have the shitty board game that came out alongside the movie.
I felt like some of the world itself was more interesting than whatever drama Eragon and Saphira were dealing with, like the dwarves' home and politics there, or some of the human cities Brom and Eragon pass through, as well as some of the history of the dragon riders and Vroengard. There's some cool potential for world-building and lore there, rather than Eragon and Saphira lighting things on fire. Though I still love the action sequences to be honest.
Goes to show that I didn't finish reading the third book - since it was lost in a move. Still enjoyed the three of them, nothing like the movie. Are you missing something? I had bought all three at the time - even if there was a fourth released later on.
17:40 It's interesting that that's exactly what How to Train Your Dragon does. The dragons don't speak with the humans, but you can still get a sense of a connection between them. They do it with through their actions or their body language in response to something. imo, I don't think HTTYD would have been as well received as it was if they let the dragons speak. Ironically, despite HTTYD being a CGI cartoon, the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless feels far more authentic, than what we see in this movie.
This was essentially what the Eragon movie flopped at. It ended up turning the relationship between what was meant to be between 2 EQUAL best friends into a unintentional failed attempt at a Master/Pet relationship by making Saphira state the obvious, effectively dehumanizing her as an individual and simply demoting her whole character into "Eragon's Dragon" like some glorified steed (former which was most likely Paolini's intention when he wrote the telepathy at first and then derailing into the latter). On the other hand, HTTYD establishes that the Dragons in question have their own ego, personality and character, so i'm playing the devil's advocate (and stating the original books), that there is a language of the Dragons. Although while definitely showing a strong connection via body language and response is a good case of "Show, Don't Tell" , there have been many situations where body language often got misinterpreted and lands both the Vikings and Humans into deep trouble simply because they can't talk to their human partners about the important stuff. Not to mention by not giving them a voice, the relationship is demoted/changed from "2 best friends" to "Master and Pet" which is something I doubt Christina Powell had in mind when she was writing the books. As much as I agree with Doug here about the whole "not stating the obvious" when it comes to Saphira, when it comes to the main characters animal companions, if the companions aren't mere pets but individuals like her that have the opportunity to be complex and 3-dimensional, then it's a waste if the chance for them to grow alongside their human friends aren't used at all, effectively sidelining them as "mere pets".
shadowthehedgehog181 This is different, dragons in the Inheritance Cycle are magical creatures and hyper intelligent and powerful. Their relationship in the book was great (in my opinion)
I just love how the incredibly powerful villains that killed Garrow and nearly kill all of Eragon's village later are reduced to mere useless mooks when in the books it takes him three whole books to kill the Ra'zac with an extra helping of a full grown dragon and an impossibly badass cousin. Oh, and Eragon needed to get an elf power up to become even minutely able to match them.
Spectre Dan eragon actually outmatched them with his elf form. He only struggled with killing them because he didn't have a good weapon since murtagh took his sword in the previous book
Spectre Dan true. Another thing I hated about the movie: they had eragon on par with Ra'zac AND Durza when he was no match for either of them at this point in the story, and only killed Durza because Sapphira distracted him. There were only four people who ever killed a shade in this series. Did they even take the time to explain what a shade was? The fact that they completely glossed over important parts of the lore just shows how rushed this film was.
Skillwise Eragon may have been able to take the Ra'zac as a human, i mean Roran almost did, but he was no match for them when it came to speed and strength.
Fangsabre and that's the point. There's an incredibly high chance he would have died if he fought them. He may have had a better chance at the peak of his human ability, but the Eragon in this movie should never have been able to beat them.
Besides plenty of details (PLENTY) that were left out, one thing that I really hated was the fact Saphira was treated more like an animal, and that Arya did'nt look like an elf
Onyx Dragon Angela was changed into a generic nothing and THEY KILLED OFF RORAN RORAN IS LITERALLY THE MOST INTERESTING CHARACTER IN THE WHOLE SERIES HOW TF YOU KILL HIM OFF
Eragon is… strangely fascinating in my eyes. I admire the fact that the books were written by a teen and it became a success; I can’t help but admire his creativity at that age. Fun fact: the author had lots of conflict with the studio during the production.
as much as I love Eragon, Paolini pretty directly copied A New Hope for the first book, like more than just typical hero's journey stuff. The second book takes some beats from Empire Strikes Back as well but its not as egregious about it
@@bluonblu8555it’s not people claim it’s a rip off sully because the first book has a lot of tropes in it that many other series has but after the first book it becomes really good
My brother actually took me to see it for my birthday when it came out since I loved the books. I was grateful he wanted to do something for me, but it didn't hide the fact it was a very disappointing birthday.
Man, those clips of Saphira emoting without dialogue, it gives me this weird urge, like I could be watching something that does that, but bett--Excuse me, I have to go watch "How to Train Your Dragon." Thanks, Critic.
TWO THINGS! 1. I want there to be a commentary of Doug voicing as Lassie's thoughts now. 2. I expected Lion King jokes after the mention of Jeremy Irons. I am disappointed.
I was a teenager by the time the movie came out, but I honestly couldn't stand more than five minutes of it. The "Saphira magically aging herself already with a name and having telepathic powers without any trial-and-error whatsoever" was when I rage-quit the movie.
KarlAndArma4ever Yea. They absolutely rushed through the beginning village, and the journey to point a, and the middle, and that bit before the climax, and the end. Overall this movie was really rushed. I remember reading the book and while looking back at it the story was sort of generic but the pacing was okay(I think). In the movie however. It was anything but okay.
I actually googled whether or not Malkovich was mute for half his life or not, but I did learn that he's a really nice guy. He donates a lot of money to the Steppenwolf Theater Company that supports stage actors and playwrites and help them to further their careers, and in 2013, he saved a 77 year old man's life. He tripped and cut his neck open on scaffolding and Malkovich rushed over and applied pressure to the man's neck, thus mitigating blood loss and saving his life. Say what you will about his acting, but he's a stand up guy.
"Someone really tried to make this film. A lot of effort went into it!" What if I told you the princess is an elf? Or the raiders during the sparring/training with Jeremy Irons were large, horned beast-men? Or that a key character was killed off in the film?
And king Hrothgar was supposed to be a dwarf. Maybe I'm getting him mixed up with Aji'had, but I could have sworn the people-who-were-supposed-to-be-dwarves appeared in the movie too, only they were human.
@@elanakroll2102 neither did the Twins, Solembum, Elva (the child Eragon "blesses"), Jeod... several characters. Also, Sloan wasn't tortured to death in the books. And when Eragon finds Garrow in the book, his uncle is clinging to life and dies days later. In the book, Brom is killed by the Ra'zac's poison, not a great-arrow flung by Durza. Speaking of, the Ra'zac were NOT created by Durza. Their origins in the book aren't clear even in-universe, but they WEREN'T created by Durza.
I love Jeremy Irons in a film because I can tell how bad the film is by the mumble meter. The less he cares, the more he mumbles. Two sentences and I know he's trying to tell me to leave.
A. L. ... The Lion King? He was in Dungeons and Dragons and I literally only watched that movie because of the NC review and it was just as magically terrible as NC said it would be. Seriously, SO bad that I enjoyed it.
I am still under the belief that Jeremy read the script for Dungeons and Dragons and realized the only way to make the movie watchable was to ridiculously overact.
Or as I like to call it. "Im gonna rape everything the original series ever made interesting and never let another adaptation be possible" The movie. No, that other one.
Gaiamatt, I have never seen that, but that kind of thing is more acceptable than making a movie that is nothing like the books but is crap even if taken as its own thing. I'd probably rather watch the Dungeons and Dragons movies than the Eragon movie. Okay, maybe not.
While the book is no masterpiece, they left some of the best bits out of this movie. They cut out the witch Angela and her werecat, the massive desert in the center of the country, the humongous mountain range and massive dwarven city located in a huge volcanic crater.
Robert Gronewold And they cut out what originality the elves had. Yeah Paolini's elves followed the "communing with nature" cliches but they were also massively more badass than humans.
555Rainstar that's a problem I have with high fantasy. When elves are just inherently superior. Eragon becomes much more powerful, but it's not because of great effort, it's just because they made him more like an elf.
Ser Sh1bum I honestly think they'd make for a better TV Series (Though right now it would get financially RAPED by GOT, so maybe wait a while...) or maybe a mini series of sorts.
The movie adaptation is so fucking shallow and weak. Yeah, the book wasn't anything that special, but it was the "cliché done right" case - a really standart, but entertaining "from zero to hero" story with some interesting ideas and concepts. What a shame, it ended up like this.
given all i've heard of it, it makes me reticent over trying to write a fantasy novel myself. i'd like for it to y'know, nit be bland. generic. not-sucky. but alas, my experience as a writer is minimal as it is.
I have mixed feelings about this movie. When I first watched it, I was 11 and thought it was awesome. When I discovered that it was a book series, I was so happy. I’ve read all of the books but after reading the books, I watched the movie again and was horrified at how they butcher what was then my favourite book series. As an adult, I’m not as fond of the books but that’s because my taste in reading material has changed and I can appreciate more complex stories like the Lord of the Rings. Eragon is a good epic fantasy for young readers just getting into the genre because it has everything you want in a fantasy but isn’t as overly complicated or difficult to read. What I’m trying to say is, as much as the movie sucked, it got me started on a decade long love affair with reading and appreciation for longer, more detailed plots. Sorry for the long comment. This is something I am rather passionate about 😋
This comment decently sums up why I liked the series and why I respect it to this day. Yes, it basically rips the Hero's Journey formula beat for beat (a formula that is no more unique to Eragon than it is to Star Wars, might I add) but it is a very good entry point into both reading as a hobby itself or just the fantasy genre. It's not the next Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Star Wars (by this I mean it never tried to be "the next big book saga") and that's fine.
as someone who was a large fan of the book series, this movie made me insanely angry. it skipped over major plot points, changed how most of the characters looked and acted, it was like the movie was made by someone who read a review on the book written by someone who only read the cliffnotes version.
Tardis945 the first and second books take all their major plot points from episodes 4&5 of Star Wars. After that though I think the books get much better, up until the end though when Pasolini tried to wrap everything up with a nice neat little bow when he shouldn’t have.
Yeah, I hated the ending. I STILL can't get over Arya becoming queen. It's absurd. She never wanted to be queen, in fact she joined the Varden to get away from all that. She always wanted to be a Rider, and Riders have pretty much always stayed out of that sort of thing. And the book is trying to tell me that after she FINALLY becomes a Rider, THEN she would decide to become queen? WHY? Because some elves were kind of persistent? It was completely against her character. We didn't know much about Arya, in fact, practically the only thing we DID know about her was that she was very independent. And the only reason for her to be queen seemed to be to make it so that she and Eragon couldn't be together. What with the bullshit of Eragon leaving "forever", even though he's immortal. Which led to the big cop-out of Eragon's vision about that boat scene coming true, but then WHOOSH there goes Arya. Utter garbage.
That’s exactly what it is. The movie is trying way too hard to be the next LOTR with all the plot points of Star Wars. Book still had those Star Wars plot points but my God at least it didn’t try to be something it wasn’t
I couldn't even make it through this video. I was hoping Critic would tackle some issues I had found with this movie, instead he unearthed even more issues I completely overlooked. I'm so distraught now.
Were the books a master piece? No. Were they good? Honestly, I enjoyed them. This movie? *Kill it like the rest.* Seriously though, this movie butchered a lot of the story and cut so many corners that I'm amazed they even gave it the same title.
Book Galbatorix: Feared villain who is not seen until the last book Movie Galbatorix: Lazy writer's exposition machine. (Kind of like the firelord in the show Avatar: the Last Airbender vs in the movie The Last Airbender.) Book Saphira: Spends the majority of the first book the size of (or smaller than) a horse. Adds a new dimension to Eragon's personality and character development. Movie Saphira: Grows to full size in a minute. Generic exposition machine. Book Urgals: Basically big orks with horns Movie Urgals: ???!? Book Brom: Reveals he was a dragon rider on his death bed Movie Brom: Eragon weasels it out of him Book Arya: Doesn't reveal she's a princess until half way through book 2. Puts herself in a coma to slow the effects of whatever's killing her, telepathically tells Eragon that taking her to the Varden is the only way to save her. Movie Arya: "I'm the elf Princess Arya tee hee hee!" "Oh hey hey I'm totally fine after being imprisoned and tortured for months." Book Durza: Fearless sadist with very powerful magical abilities Movie Durza: Some silly asshole Book finding the Varden: An intense chase while Urgals bear down on them rapidly. (Meanwhile Arya is a few hours from death and they're not even certain where the Varden is located). Movie finding the Varden: "Oh hey here we are, neat-o." Book Tronjhiem: A mountain sized dwarf city in an even bigger hollowed out mountain, home of the Varden Movie Tronjhiem: A pile of shit, home of the Varden Book final battle: Eragon gets his shit pushed in and would have lost if not for Arya and Saphira's intervention Movie final battle: Eragon pounces on Durza and kicks his ass with no issues
Book Ra'zac: Creatures so powerful and dangerous that they managed to kill Brom and almost everyone in Eragon's village, and Eragon wasn't even able to match them in strength until the third book. Plus, they were just children. Movie Ra'zac: A couple of mooks that are killed of in less than two minutes.
Also, Book Tronjhiem: Dwarfs play a major role throughout the series. Movie Tronjhiem: Sorry, no dwarfs. We used up the budget to animate Saphira, which wasn't even done that well.
I do agree that Sappheria was hugely watered down as a character. I remembered her having so much snark in the books and naturally, you can't fit that into an hour and a half worth of movie. Perhaps it would have done better as a tv series, like Legend of the Seeker or Merlin.
Like that part where Eragon gets stuck while climbing the cliff side because he didn't bother asking for help and she just stares at him like "you had one job."
I couldn't believe the stuff they left out, but like how on earth did they think leaving out the wound Durza gave Eragon in the final battle was a good idea? Like that scar is a HUGE deal for SO LONG. Getting healed is like half his motivation for finding the elves.
It is in a bit.. But more it feels like you are watching the book on fast forward with the least memorable moments highlighted. And the growing up, training and bonding process of Eragon and his dragon completely left out..
I love the series, but even I will admit the first book is just establishment, mainly. It has some identity, but nothing unique. Hard to be mad at this movie.
It changes a lot like how if the rider dies so does the dragon or how Rohan was going to join the army. I can't remember much from this movie or the book it's been years since I have watch and read it.
No its not, it has similar elements and names, but the pacing, personalities and details are all wrong. Take roran and eragon play fighting, they never did that in the books because neither wanted to be a fighter, they didn't desire to go out into the battlefield. Eragon enjoyed the stories brom told him (who was a storyteller, not a merchant) but that was it, he didn't dream of using a sword until he was thrust into fighting and had no choice. They also skipped many things and showed things like galbatorix, who was kept a mystery until the final book.
It's funny how in the 'Princess needing resuing' joke, he uses a shot of Zelda from Hyrule Warriors, one of the only games where you don't actually need to rescue her.
They changed so much in the movie. The amount of emphasis and development that the books put into the magic system just wasn't translated at all. I get why but it was such an important part of many battles and events that not to address it just takes something major away from the whole story. Magic is complicated. The movie just wasn't as good, even the opening sequence seeing dragons fire-breathing others out the sky just didn't make sense. In the book's fire rarely does any damage to other dragons because of the number of wards put up by the riders, but the point is the same. On top of that, the "land was ruled by men astride mighty dragons" was just wrong. The dragon riders were peace-keepers not rulers, the land had a king while they were around. Just......so much was't adapted well.
I finished this book like a month before the movie came out, having no idea one was being made. (I was like 15 or something). I was so excited to see it. That time skip to adulthood made me absolutely livid. Not to mention the bad guys that weren't anything like the book.
@@MatsuoTanuki I'm pretty sure whoever made the movie didn't pay attention either probably just read a wiki article didn't pay attention to any character details.
About 20 pages of the book was about eragon keeping the growing dragon a secret, as well as establishing that they understand each other, also, the dragons can only speak to eragon, as he is sephira's rider, also, in the book it says that a dragon will only hatch when a rider they deem worthy comes along.
*Baby dragon suddenly changes into an adult dragon* Me: *inhale* $&@# YOU!!!!!!! Look, I'm a big fan of the books. I love them to death, and I'm not going to act like they're ground breaking or anything like that. They DO repeat a LOT of things that other stories do. Uncle murdered forcing the hero to go on a journey: Star Wars written all over it. Wise old mentor: pftt, that's a given. Saving the damsel in distress: Duh. If movie producers want to make a generic cash grab, FINE I don't care! Just don't expect me to spend money to watch it. I rather read the books again. BUT (and this is a big "but") if you're going to make a movie about a relationship between a boy and a dragon, put a bit more EFFORT INTO IT INSTEAD OF SKIPPING OVER ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF THE BOOK!!! For those who don't know: in the book, Eragon does take dragon out in to the woods to hide her. She makes a nest in a old hollow tree and Eragon brings her food every days. Months go by and Eragon wants to give her a name. He goes to Brom (the storyteller) and asks him the names of the dragons. Eragon comes back to the dragon and he starts listing off all the male names (he doesn't know she's a girl). After her getting annoyed and Eragon's realization he gives a list of female name when she hears the name Saphira and picks that name. Years go by with Eragon learning more about Saphira and Saphira learning how to fly and communicate with Eragon. Eragon makes a saddle, gets injured while riding her, and teaches her how to hunt. Saphira asks Eragon questions about why she's being hidden, what he does when he's gone, and why the villagers would be afraid of her. She shows him the joy of flying and how to communicate through thought. THEY BOND!!!! They learn about each other and teach each other! I realize it's hard to translate a book to film BUT THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS ADD A FRIGGIN MONTAGE OR TIME SKIP!!!!!
I like the books but I won’t deny the quality is lacking. (It is better than a few other fantasy novels though namely the infamously bad Eyes of Argon and the Sword of Truth series) but yeah I agree. Saphira felt important and they had a decent relationship. She even gets mad at Eragon for not riding her enough and she gets lonely. And near the end she even says “I love you little one” and it’s a cute moment
I agree, I'm also a big fan of the books. They went to far with this movie moving from book 1 to book 2. I mean SHITTT Read the Fucking books Movie directors. (ahem Percy Jackson movie was better than The Eragon movies) Also Shaphira growing up (which would be at least book 1 to 2 not in the first ten seconds) Welp I can agree with your assessment on Arya (actually one of the only badasses in the books!) So yeah loved what you said.
Telepathy is a thing in the books too, and it honestly made more sense, probably because Saphira said important things, and her relationship with Eragon was grown more.
TheKarjee As a Warcraft fan I thought it was very... okay. The main problem in my opinion is that just chose the wrong story to make into a movie. The plot of Warcraft 1 isn't the greatest story ever...
I saw it and I liked it as well. I felt it was one of the few Video Game movies that stayed true to it's source Material. If it does get a Sequel I'm hoping it would be an adaptation of 'Lord of the Clans'.
I liked the book better, and I liked the Lassie lines you had better than both. "I do not want to taste the vitamins, they taste of horse meat and death." The book had way more in it, especially the extended oppression on the village before the uncle was killed, by the weird monster-creatures that kidnapped people and drank their bone marrow.
The book actually had tension and emotion. Eregon's uncle dies, he gets stolen away, real emotions happen. The movie just boiled it down to "oh plot trigger." The later books had serious problems but the first 2 were actually interesting.
SaladCollective the book had way more world building, the cousin played a sort of larger role later on and a significantly large role im the later books. Gobbledy goop was a much more fleshed out and threatening villain as we see his oppresion and iron fist grasping the world. Also what is more terrifying than the laughing dead. Oh yeah and durza and the shades were more fleshed out, as was the sorcery, elves and dwarves. Basically it was a fairly well made series and pretty damn good, the ra'zak or whatever they are are more like the nazgul tho with a similar kind of "black breath" kind of abillity.
Dude the books were pretty decent, they even had this magic system where an ancient language was used to describe what you want happen and it took the same amount of energy to do as it would take you physically. Pretty cool. By the end of the second book Eragon is dropping whole platoons by popping veins in their brains from the air.
What's really disappointing is that literally everything that did make this story unique in the books was removed for the movie. The book series actually gets pretty damn dark the longer it goes on.
It just sucks that so much about the movie that did make it interesting was cut. Like Saphira's growth and personality, The entire revenge plot being the reason Eragon left in the first place, the sparring sessions where Brom legit just beats the shit out of him. The village scene was ruined. they don't come across the pile of corpses and Eragon's first use of magic is lame as in the books it comes to him through pure desperation as he's back into a corner. The books while generic did have interesting moments and it seems the movie just removed all of them.
The thing I liked in the books about his first spell was that he'd heard the word from Brom earlier and just thought it was a curse. So when he fired the shot out of revenge, he said it because he thought it was basically like "fuck you". Which is both funny and makes sense. In the movie... how exactly did Eragon learn the magic word again?
@Noobie2k7 especially interesting that they just killed off the Ra'zacs with a five-second tussle. It's not like they are major antagonists in later books or anything, as if they didn't even want to continue adapting the story
Not to mention he had already seen Brom use magic in the plains before they got to Darret and he wasn't actually trying to use magic at all, but rather just said it because he thought it was a curse.
- MrVercettti89 If anyone cares... SPOILERS BELOW. As an avid Percy Jackson fan, the first movie was INCREDIBLE as an adaptation compared to the second one. The first movie had a lot of small issues that ruin the first book, but can be solved easily later in the series. The biggest issues for me were the cabin(Percy's dad didn't build him shit), the fact that Chiron knows who Percy's dad is when it is supposed to be a mystery, the part where Clarisse is supposed to show up at the beginning(because it's just hilarious), and the age of the characters. They were supposed to be twelve, but that can be solved later on by just making adaptations so the plot fits their age. Other than that it was small details. The second movie, however, started out great. They introduced Clarisse in an interesting way, the quest started out just like I remembered it, and the rest was pretty well done. Certain liberties were taken, for instance, I don't remember the "eaten by a worm" part of the book, but it's been a while and honestly I thought it worked really well either way. I was a little sad we didn't get to see Circe, but oh well they gave her a nod at the island. Then the heroes get the fleece and are about to head back for the stunning cliff hanger... And then EVERYTHING WENT TO SHIT. LUKES ASS SHOWS UP WITH KRONOS-IN-A-BOX, BRINGS HIM BACK TO LIFE, AND STARTS EATING THE DEMIGODS. WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT DID YOU PLAN ON DOING FOR THE NEXT THREE FUCKING BOOKS? KRONOS DOESN'T COME BACK UNTIL BOOK 5. AND I KNOW YOU PLANNED ON CONTINUING IT BECAUSE YOU STILL BROUGHT THALIA BACK. SO WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!?!?!?!?!?. And just to be clear, I do mean "you" as in the writers and directors, not "you" the commentator.
@@martinbixler5155 The Dom has a lost in adaptation on the two movies. I hated both the movies as they pretty much do what he says in his opening line "if you want to tell the author's story tell the author's story, don't take the author's story and try and change it into your story." The plot is unrecognizable, the villains are completely wrong, the characters are completely warped... Nothing in any of the movies resembles the book save for the basic set up of Demigods and Quests. I highly recommend watching the Lost in Adaptation of it if you haven't already
+DarkCeleste11 Out of sheer coincidence, those happened to be suggested today when I opened up youtube and I actually watched both of them. I agree with a lot of the points and I honestly believe my recollection of the books is likely a incorrect since I read them nearly a decade ago. I haven't gone back to read them again mainly because I wanted to catch up with the series. I only finished the Percy Jackson series just before the release of the beginning of the Heroes of Olympus arc and I only recently finished all of those as well as the first two Trials of Apollo books. Plus I have so many books I want to read for the first time, I haven't been able to go back and revisit the original story line. The more commentary I see on the movies, the more I think the details from the movie are mixing into my recollection of the books and making the movies seem more accurate than they actually are. I am now in the process of using my Audible credits to download the audio books so I can listen to them in my free time so I can hate the movies even more than I already do. The point my comment was making is that the second movie seemed salvageable to me until the very end. There are certainly issues and I think that the Lost in Adaptation was correct on every criticism levied against the movies, but I was just saying I thought it could be salvaged until Kronos came back and started eating the demigods. Maybe that is just me wanting to see a good film adaptation of one of my favorite book series ever, and giving them too much credit. But it was just my opinion.
Come on, not ONE Scar joke in the whole thing? That was practically gift-wrapped to you! "Better than Iron's other character burial ground." *cut to Scar being eaten by hyenas*
What do you mean? Everyone knows it's because of that time Bill put a retraining order against Malcolm in the Season 2 finale. Man, Bill is so consistent.
I like the books. To be fair, I read them in like 5th grade or something like that, but I still enjoy re-reading them. Yeah they aren't very original, but they are certainly entertaining. They have a real kinda epic wandering journey vibe to them that I dig. They deserved much better than this turd, even when I was in 5th grade and just finished the books I still hated this movie.
I think Chris di a really good job creating not only the world for his story but a language for some of the races and that. It was really cool. And who wouldn't want to ride a beautiful dragon like Sapphira?
Matthew DeSantis I never completed the series even though I own all the books (though I only got the last one about a year or two ago). I'll probably go back and reread the series from the beginning
Matthew DeSantis I tried reading the first book in 7th grade and dropped it, it was just too boring. I remember feeling jealous that a 15 year old had written it because I wanted to write a novel too, but I didn't feel so bad after actually having read it (and finding out his parents were the ones who published it). If some good came out of it it did convince me to finally go watch the Star Wars films XD
The worst thing about this movie is that it only vaguely follows the book. But is so far from it that they can't do the second film. Characters were killed who need to be in the second. Others not even introduced. Elves and dwarves are essential to the story, the urgals aren't human, the fortune teller, Angela, whose not mentioned in this video, is not blind, can kick ads with a double bladed sword and has a werecat that is quite essential to the story. Also, Galbatorix is only talked about and is a commanding presence, but does not ever reveal bus face till the forth instalment, making John Malkovitch not really even needed in this film.
16:06, in the book, Brom contacts Eragon using his own telepathy (and he’s been training Eragon to resist telepathic attacks which Eragon assumes this is to the point where Eragon focuses intently on thinking of one of Saphira’s scales.)
"What are your eyes even looking at?! We're down here!" "Who are you talking to right now?!" Damn, that is some good fourth wall break if I've ever seen it
Andrew Howard yeah and they actually had a pretty nice relationship. She got angry with him at times, they had some affectionate moments, Hell Saphira even said “I love you little one” near the end and they had a really sweet moment and of course Eragon in the book actually raised her and watch her grow.
I have been waiting years for this review. The book was already pretty generic, but it at least explained things, and actually had a plot that appeared to move forward! The movie is so low-budget it's painful.
They blew the whole budget on Saphira and Durza's smoke dragon puppet. They couldn't even afford to give Arya elf ears because of over-spending on the those dragons.
Unicorn Hunter Books the book had too much “tell” instead of “show.” It preferred lengthy explanations instead of showing things and letting the audience figure it out.... which is what you’re supposed to do
The Eragon film had so much potential sadly it had so little in common with the book. If peter Jackson had been the director it may have been a very good film.
All of my friends who have dogs did that at least once, there is no shame in that. As for cats, well... My tom's name is Sisu, but it's similar to the armed forces: The ordinary flyboy, grunt, jarhead or squid is rarely on a first-name basis with their CO, but refers to them with their rank. So I usually just call him Boss.
TK Darkheart I didn't really mind the feathers too much as the Eragon book covers I've seen had feathery scales. And it seems like they tried to make the dragon's design standout. That's my opinion about it, anyway.
Jason Early I can see where you come. from my standpoint, while I understand that it's fantasy and almost anything is possible, I also like fantasy that maintains some ground in science. the feathers on something that is 99% scale seemed odd and extremely out of place because feathers are like normal hairs, the move in a certain way, scales wouldn't really allow for feathers and it put me off. doesn't mean I hate it, just means I didn't like it.
TK Darkheart but feathers evolved from scale.... dinosaurs into birds... feathers make more sense then wing membranes honestly. Though it is a bit weird the feathers would only be on the wings
The Red Salamander that's exactly it. I know dinosaur evolved into birds, but at the same time, dinosaurs that had feathers had them on more than just the wings, like you said. they had them on their backs, tails, legs, forearms and so on. but to see them in such a singular place seemed awkward. like they ripped the wings off a Griffin and taped them to her back. it just didn't work, no body would've grown the wings in just that spot, they would've been in different areas as well.

It would have been nice to see the Slice of Life moments between Eragon and baby Saphira as he tries to be the dad in raising and protecting her.

I have only readed the first book, and it was for 3-4 years ago i think, but i remember that scene, and yeah, it was pretty adorable.
The Playstation 2 game made it worse....
Narrated cutscene:
'He named her Sapphira, for her sapphire eyes'.
Not kidding.
As someone who has read the entire book series, the first scene of a matured Saphira just hurt my soul.
Do you recommend the books?
@@joseguzman-pk4pf Yeah, their pretty good. I mean for one thing the first one does include Eragon and Saphira actually bonding before she can even speak.
I have read the first one, and have to say; if you like Tolkien, then you will enjoy this series. But I just didn’t see anything new in it. Dragons, swords, elves and magic... I just think these ideas are pretty overused and boring.
@@gearmachine_4885 I thought the use of gems of storage of energy was pretty cool.

Your edits with the dragon dialogue cut out made ALL THE DIFFERENCE. Lord. The movie would have probably been watchable with your edit.
I think we can all agree on that.
i know one way to make the movie watchable (barely), step 1 read the book, step 2 count all the things they did wrong, for laughs at how badly they got it wrong
Optional step 3 for 21 or older only turn that into a drinking game, get something light or you will die of alcohol poisoning.
Edit Read all 4 books and see how much the movie REALLY F-s the hell out of the plot, Killing the Ra-Zak and one of Eragon's primary motivations was stupid beyond belief. and thats just the tip of the iceberg
Supernaturlisch but the problem is in the books sapphire and eragon telepathy interaction was important to the book and lore
Naruto uchiha~ trippie redd
Turning a doorstopper of a book into a movie rarely works out for this very reason, you have to condense hundreds of pages of prologue into the first 10-15 minutes of a movie so you can get to the action because they assume the fans already know what's going on and they assume non fans are too dumb to sit through tons of character development without walking out of the theater. They wind up just confusing non fans and pissing off the fans with the flat characters
@@arthas640 ESPECIALLY when it's a generic YA fantasy piece of shit. The movie may be generic, but the book is no less so. I will never forget watching this at the movies. There is a scene at the end, where our boy is reflecting on how far he has come from where he started. I actually like how the Critic improved the scenes of Saphira and Eragon by muting her.

Mikanoes the book was bad but I agree at least Saphira and Eragon had chemistry. They actually developed a relationship, and grew up together
i actually thought eragon was a whiny crybaby in the books
Tsumefan2 I think he asks too many damn questions
yeah that too XD and because he was a whiny crybaby, i never picked up the book again because all he did was bitch and moan
Tsumefan2 I do agree. I found myself saying “Eragon, shut the fuck up” to myself on way too many occasions
The thing about Eragon: It really was never going to translate from page to screen well. In the book, Saphira speaking was kind of necessary. In the movie, it caused problems because the medium functions differently. The adapters of HTTYD understood that (Toothless speaks in the books, as do all dragons).
And the movies were an entirely different story, simply because Dragons don't have a spoken language. And it was the best possible choice.
THE DRAGONS SPEAK IN HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON BOOKS?!?!?! holy crap that is amazing.... But yep, it would have been awful in the movies. Kudos to Dreamworks

Shadowsafter So...Thorn.
+
Like Pete's Dragon?
Still for 2006, the dragon cgi looks pretty good
I think most CGI in the 2000s looked way better than today.
Jurassic Park came out in 1993 and the CGI looks 2x better than Fallen Kingdoms
Nah, bruh. The facial animation on that Dragon looks bland as though she's bored all the time. It's as blasé as a song made by a SoundCloud rapper.
8/10 would ride that dragon
This movie is what you get when you spend all of your money on cgi and forget that other departments need money to do stuff too.
I TOTALLY FORGOT - THE BEST PART OF THE BOOK WAS HIM RAISING THE DRAGON AND THE MOVIE FUCKING SKIPPED IT ENTIRELY
nah man, they turned her into one o' them Poke-ee-mans in the movie. She just evolved once she reached a higher level.
So the book written by a teenager actually makes more sense than the movie written by older adults
Actually, the uncle didn't die right away, he was still alive when Eragon returned and he dragged his uncle to the town. He still ended up dying, but that's impressive as hell
@@DrDolan2000 very much
I actually would love to see Eragon re-cut WITHOUT Saphira's talking. It actually does add A LOT more to the scenes!!
the way it is by default makes it seem like some fan girl was like "WHAT IF HIS DRAGON TALKED IN ALL THE SCENES!!!" but she had no writing skills so just ended up saying the most generic things.... EXCEPT THERE WERE PEOPLE PAID TO MAKE THE DRAGON KEEP HER GENERIC DIALOGUE!!!
Like, my favorite edits from the Critic are:
Jeremy Irons: If the dragon is killed, the rider lives on. If the rider dies...
Saphira: (looks down, forlorn, and punches everyone watching straight in the feels)
and
Jeremy Irons: [my dragon] was killed by this sword!
Saphira: (glares at sword) Grrrrr >:(
+CJCroen1393
That was pretty good.
However it still wouldn't save the movie.
In the book the reader red their inner thoughts and how the communicate this way. I actually don'T think it would be a good idea when Eragon and Saphira just stood their silently and...doing nothing but staring at each other.
Wow those parts where you cut out her voice actually made those scenes a lot better.
Halfway through the first book (about the time Brom dies), I stopped and thought "Wtf did the movie guys smoke?"
While the book series doesn't have any groundbreaking innovation, it is very well written, and you can tell the author put a lot of effort into it.
No Name you realize there were 4 books right?
The Gameboy SP version was more faithful to the book than the movie.
Whenever Jeremy Irons opened his mouth, all I could hear was Scar.

Hahahaha, I'm into the Fullmetal Alchemist fandom right now and actually Jeremy Irons could voice FMA Scar pretty well too.😂

It's interesting that that's exactly what How to Train Your Dragon does.
As much as I agree with Doug here about the whole "not stating the obvious" when it comes to Saphira, when it comes to the main characters animal companions, if the companions aren't mere pets but individuals like her that have the opportunity to be complex and 3-dimensional, then it's a waste if the chance for them to grow alongside their human friends aren't used at all, effectively sidelining them as "mere pets".
pigifi I agree with all your points! You articulated it better than I could have
godzillavkk Have you been smoking old Toby? Also, what books are you talking about? The HTTYD books or the Eragon fanfics?
shadowthehedgehog181 This is different, dragons in the Inheritance Cycle are magical creatures and hyper intelligent and powerful.
Infamous Knight I wasn't denying that. I meant that the human Eragon would not have been able to beat the Ra'zac. He needed that form.
Onyx Dragon Angela was changed into a generic nothing and THEY KILLED OFF RORAN
RORAN IS LITERALLY THE MOST INTERESTING CHARACTER IN THE WHOLE SERIES HOW TF YOU KILL HIM OFF
Bet ya 5 bucks they were planning to bring him back in the sequel
Eragon is… strangely fascinating in my eyes. I admire the fact that the books were written by a teen and it became a success; I can’t help but admire his creativity at that age. Fun fact: the author had lots of conflict with the studio during the production.
as much as I love Eragon, Paolini pretty directly copied A New Hope for the first book, like more than just typical hero's journey stuff. The second book takes some beats from Empire Strikes Back as well but its not as egregious about it

Yea.
Yeah it was my first too
I actually googled whether or not Malkovich was mute for half his life or not, but I did learn that he's a really nice guy.
Was he mute? I haven't seen anything about it so I'm assuming no
No me neither.
Cool, good on him!

What if I told you the princess is an elf? Or the raiders during the sparring/training with Jeremy Irons were large, horned beast-men? Or that a key character was killed off in the film?
The key character being The Ra'zac? *SPOILERS*

@@roiroije6326 Could be Aji'had. Though I guess he technically died in Eldest.

In the book, Brom is killed by the Ra'zac's poison, not a great-arrow flung by Durza.
Speaking of, the Ra'zac were NOT created by Durza. Their origins in the book aren't clear even in-universe, but they WEREN'T created by Durza.

This is something I am rather passionate about 😋
Thank you for sharing your story! We need to recognize the media that paved the way to help kids keep reading.
Cliffnotes that where based off the rambling of a drunk hobo, who read the book while completely high
Oh yeah and Roland become a soldier? I mean wasn't he about to go for training as a "mill-boy"
I cried when the dragon had feather wings
Not to mention the HUGE spoiler about Arya's situation.
agredd in the books they were clearly more defined like bat wings
The problem with this movie is that looks like a Lord of the Rings ripoff setting-wise and a Star Wars knockoff plot-wise
That is literally what the book is. It's fun though.
Book still had those Star Wars plot points but my God at least it didn’t try to be something it wasn’t
y would you read a book written by a kid?

Book Arya: Doesn't reveal she's a princess until half way through book 2. Puts herself in a coma to slow the effects of whatever's killing her, telepathically tells Eragon that taking her to the Varden is the only way to save her.
Movie Arya: "I'm the elf Princess Arya tee hee hee!" "Oh hey hey I'm totally fine after being imprisoned and tortured for months."
Book Durza: Fearless sadist with very powerful magical abilities
Movie Durza: Some silly asshole
Book finding the Varden: An intense chase while Urgals bear down on them rapidly. (Meanwhile Arya is a few hours from death and they're not even certain where the Varden is located).
Movie finding the Varden: "Oh hey here we are, neat-o."
Book Tronjhiem: A mountain sized dwarf city in an even bigger hollowed out mountain, home of the Varden
Movie Tronjhiem: A pile of shit, home of the Varden
Book final battle: Eragon gets his shit pushed in and would have lost if not for Arya and Saphira's intervention
Movie final battle: Eragon pounces on Durza and kicks his ass with no issues
Book Ra'zac: Creatures so powerful and dangerous that they managed to kill Brom and almost everyone in Eragon's village, and Eragon wasn't even able to match them in strength until the third book. Plus, they were just children.
Movie Ra'zac: A couple of mooks that are killed of in less than two minutes.
Also Book Ra'zac: one of Eragon's primary motivations in the form of revenge,
Movie Ra'zac: well that is gone to shit.
Weren't the Ra'zac also described to have more bird like features?
Yeah, the Ra'zac were basically man/bug/bird monsters with sword and beaks. I'm not even sure what the movie ones were supposed to be.
Krys Bingham someone get HBO on the phone, we've got their new GoT follow-up
Like that part where Eragon gets stuck while climbing the cliff side because he didn't bother asking for help and she just stares at him like "you had one job."
u mean got follow up that isnt even close to got quality? eragon is more MTV stuff just like shannara chronicles.
bruncla2303 id love to see a show that follows the books
I loved the Merlin series when I found it one day browsing Netflx one day. I would have loved to see this movie follow that to get more of it!
I couldn't believe the stuff they left out, but like how on earth did they think leaving out the wound Durza gave Eragon in the final battle was a good idea? Like that scar is a HUGE deal for SO LONG. Getting healed is like half his motivation for finding the elves.
Durza actually wonded Eragon in the movie, but it never came back in any way.
The fans of the book hate this movie it's very unfaithful to the book.
HG Shurtugal It's pretty close to that first book
9:11 congratulations your vibrava evolved into a flygon!
I'd actuLly rather watch Flygon than Eragon. Hell, I'd rather watch Stunfisk!
Imagine a pokemon game but on the medieval era
Oh yeah, I forgot Saphira evolved like a fucking Pokemon in the movie version.
RusticShadow Right! The book was months

I finished this book like a month before the movie came out, having no idea one was being made. (I was like 15 or something). I was so excited to see it.
That time skip to adulthood made me absolutely livid. Not to mention the bad guys that weren't anything like the book.

Did NC never find out that Arya (I think that’s the right spelling for this one) was supposed to be an elf? No really, she was an elf. What?!?
The Charming Platypus I don't think anybody picked up on it, least of all the main characters themselves...
@@MatsuoTanuki I'm pretty sure whoever made the movie didn't pay attention either probably just read a wiki article didn't pay attention to any character details.
She's was also supposed to have long dark hair
Even a set of cheap costume prosthetics would work. How effing hard is this?
About 20 pages of the book was about eragon keeping the growing dragon a secret, as well as establishing that they understand each other, also, the dragons can only speak to eragon, as he is sephira's rider, also, in the book it says that a dragon will only hatch when a rider they deem worthy comes along.
With the dragon not speaking it feels more emotional and intriguing. I felt like the facal expressesions show much more.
Your John Malkovich is godlike

Me: *inhale* $&@# YOU!!!!!!!
(ahem Percy Jackson movie was better than The Eragon movies)
Also Shaphira growing up (which would be at least book 1 to 2 not in the first ten seconds) Welp I can agree with your assessment on Arya (actually one of the only badasses in the books!) So yeah loved what you said.
You're pretty much spot on, only one difference: Saphira didn't take years to grow in the book, it was more like a few months.
My bad :P
Yeah, the dragon's growth rate in the books was pretty high. And, they (maybe?) never stopped growing
Telepathy is a thing in the books too, and it honestly made more sense, probably because Saphira said important things, and her relationship with Eragon was grown more.
"That Warcraft movie nobody saw"
The Chinese would beg to differ, if we get a sequel it's completely thanks to them.
Thougar I hope it gets a sequel, I found it entertaining because I knew nothing about WOW.
They probably just wanted to farm the tickets.
Thougar Should've jumped to 2 honestly.
I liked the book better, and I liked the Lassie lines you had better than both. "I do not want to taste the vitamins, they taste of horse meat and death."
The book had way more in it, especially the extended oppression on the village before the uncle was killed, by the weird monster-creatures that kidnapped people and drank their bone marrow.
The book actually had tension and emotion. Eregon's uncle dies, he gets stolen away, real emotions happen.
The movie just boiled it down to "oh plot trigger."
The later books had serious problems but the first 2 were actually interesting.
I read the first one in middle school and really enjoyed it.
Actually I think the most terrifying thing was systematic true name control
Salty Tattie Although Paolini made the very wise choice of not actually introducing Galbatorix to the readers until the 3rd book
“You pushed my hand on a cinnamon bun...”
CRIMSON EAGLE GAMING hahaha
Dude the books were pretty decent, they even had this magic system where an ancient language was used to describe what you want happen and it took the same amount of energy to do as it would take you physically. Pretty cool. By the end of the second book Eragon is dropping whole platoons by popping veins in their brains from the air.

What's really disappointing is that literally everything that did make this story unique in the books was removed for the movie. The book series actually gets pretty damn dark the longer it goes on.
Especially that religion that worships the ra’zac
It just sucks that so much about the movie that did make it interesting was cut. Like Saphira's growth and personality, The entire revenge plot being the reason Eragon left in the first place, the sparring sessions where Brom legit just beats the shit out of him. The village scene was ruined. they don't come across the pile of corpses and Eragon's first use of magic is lame as in the books it comes to him through pure desperation as he's back into a corner. The books while generic did have interesting moments and it seems the movie just removed all of them.
Like i said...why does it matter when the movie is not true to the books?
The thing I liked in the books about his first spell was that he'd heard the word from Brom earlier and just thought it was a curse. So when he fired the shot out of revenge, he said it because he thought it was basically like "fuck you". Which is both funny and makes sense.
In the movie... how exactly did Eragon learn the magic word again?
@@tiacat11 isn't there a quick scene where Brom lights a fire with it?
@Noobie2k7 especially interesting that they just killed off the Ra'zacs with a five-second tussle. It's not like they are major antagonists in later books or anything, as if they didn't even want to continue adapting the story
Not to mention he had already seen Brom use magic in the plains before they got to Darret and he wasn't actually trying to use magic at all, but rather just said it because he thought it was a curse.

This makes me want a Percy Jackson review. Another adaptation that is just terrible even when you *don't* know the books.
at least that was pretty good, i nver read the book but the film stands up on its own , Unfortunatly Percy Jackson 2 film is a Dumpster fire
- MrVercettti89
If anyone cares...
I hated both the movies as they pretty much do what he says in his opening line "if you want to tell the author's story tell the author's story, don't take the author's story and try and change it into your story."
The plot is unrecognizable, the villains are completely wrong, the characters are completely warped...
@@DarkCeleste11 it's one of my favorite reviews, I actually found the channel through that video

Never when I am drinking something critic!
I like the books. To be fair, I read them in like 5th grade or something like that, but I still enjoy re-reading them. Yeah they aren't very original, but they are certainly entertaining. They have a real kinda epic wandering journey vibe to them that I dig. They deserved much better than this turd, even when I was in 5th grade and just finished the books I still hated this movie.
the books still hold up as a series.
I think its more or less that they took the unique things from the book out making a bland horrible movie.
25:31 “Finally!” The black dragon could breathe fresh air
The critic has delivered great content for almost 10 years. This guy has changed internet culture forever.
The whole movie is 'A New Hope' but with dragons.
We're down here!"
"Who are you talking to right now?!"
Damn, that is some good fourth wall break if I've ever seen it
The book was a lot better than the movie. Sapphira spoke but only when it was necessary to the events in the story.
Andrew Howard yeah and they actually had a pretty nice relationship. She got angry with him at times, they had some affectionate moments, Hell Saphira even said “I love you little one” near the end and they had a really sweet moment and of course Eragon in the book actually raised her and watch her grow.
I think it shouldve been more of a chewbacca/han solo relationship. Where eragon can hear her but not the audience. That wouldbe worked well i think
Agreed i own all the books in hardcover i love them but i hated this movie i still have the eragon pin though
Unicorn Hunter Books the book had too much “tell” instead of “show.” It preferred lengthy explanations instead of showing things and letting the audience figure it out.... which is what you’re supposed to do
Unicorn Hunter Books, the books do get better as it goes on.
Totally Not Bruce Wayne
Yea they do. :/
In the book he was wanting revenge against the Razak for killing his uncle. But that's never addressed in the movie, except for one throwaway line.
The Eragon film had so much potential sadly it had so little in common with the book. If peter Jackson had been the director it may have been a very good film.

Honestly, I loved this film when I was younger. Now, I just want someone to make a remake of this film to make it better.
I actually think the baby dragon is cute. The dragon design was the only reason to watch this imo.
Number XIV 2 words. fucking feathers
It's weird when the book written by the teenager is WAY better than the movie made by full adults.
