Jonas You know I can't believe star destroyers and other battle ships actually run on fuel that needs to be refilled consistently. I was shocked when I saw a clone wars episode that reviled ships needed actually liquid fuel. It's like they never discovered nuclear reactions. Which makes sense seeing as how we never see any and EMP weapons are still experimental.

On the same vein, I have this Excel calculator that I use to estimate large building construction and bridges. It was written by someone who really knows how to use Excel and it has been shared all over the net among designers and engineers. I used to to calculate the space station in orbit around the earth in Star Trek The Search for Spock (the one that held Enterprise and Excelsior) and used those two ships as a baseline for size. Since there's no money used in the Star Trek universe, I just calculated the cost using USD and aerospace type materials we have today, and what market value per ton. For things like power, I used the cost of a medium sized nuclear reactor, like the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant in Tennessee. The cost? I got a rough estimate of 11 trillion USD. Now, that is assuming we have a reliable, cost effective way of getting that material from ground to space, that our engineering level was adequate for a project of that size, manpower to build it, etc.

Actually I think you'll find that:
    - As a Ford Mustang GT is estimated at around 42695.00 $
    - And a lego Ford Mustang GT is around 12. 99 Euros. converted to around 14.20$
We can find that Lego is approx. 3006.69014085073 Times cheaper than the real thing.
    So
    - As a lego star destroyer can be found on amazon for 3694.52 New or 2999.99 Used. (So 4039.40$ New or 3280.04$ used)
    - We can calculate the price of a real Star Destroyer to sell for around 11108276$ New or if you don't mind it having a couple of blaster marks, around 9020040.35565$ Used
I think 10 million dollars sounds reasonable for a handy dandy ship of mass destruction.

    Allen-
First and foremost, I love these videos. You really do a great job breaking complex problems apart and making Star Wars more concrete. I've even started to watch the movies differently since I've started watching your channel.
However...small mistake in the calculation of exchange rates. As a Master of Economics student at the Farmer School of Business, at Miami University of Ohio, I can tell you that to calculate exchange rates, you should use a GDP deflator or Consumer Price Index to find the price level of the American economy (since you use the US dollar for comparison) and the GDP deflator/CPI for the "Galactic economy". However, since I'm not sure that the galactic economy functions like the European Union (and hence prices move differently for each planet) your best bet would be to use a planet like Coruscant, which you did. Then, calculate the real exchange rate (divide American price level in terms of credits by the coruscant price level) to find the prices of galactic goods in terms of US goods (dividing one by the other tells us how many galactic goods we could purchase with a US dollar on Coruscant.)
Like I said, I really love these videos, and I can't wait to see what you guys come up with next!

Hey I have some saved up money and I want to start my own travel agency, with a luxury pleasure-boat, traveling around in the galaxy showing off the beauty of black holes, red dwarfs and twi'lek females. Can you help me, now that the Empire is gone, how much a used Executor class super star destroyer would cost, and if I can leasing it?

    • @GenerationTech
      @GenerationTech  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

well i think the problem with the executor i just takes too many people to crew a ship that large, of course if you could fill it it would be worth. I would suggest looking at one of the first order's imperial class star destroyers they've automated a lot of the maintenance structure within the ship so operating cost should be much lower. Also the mc80 star cruisers are classic cruise liners

Yeah my bad, should have not lied. I just want to get the hell out of here, and evacuate anyone who choose to come with me, before some green alien, or orange human destroys this planet. And since the New Republic is not in it's greates shape, the First Order is doing their buisness, and god knows what the Borg is up to, I want a "lifeboat" which can defend itself.

Since the good old days of me playing X-wing, i've wished for a game that would have combined that sort of dogfighting in space with a fully modelled Star Destroyers, Nebulon-B Frigates and other sort of big ships that you could walk around in. Imagine combining sort of a GTA/Yakuza-type detailed game world inside these ships where you could walk around, take part in all sorts of activities/mini-games and maybe have sort of Bioware relationships before jumping into the cockpit of a star fighter or behind the sights of a turbo-laser battery.
Star Citizen might be close to this, but one can't deny how much more appealing it could be if the setting was Star Wars-universe instead...

I suppose it would be too much to ask for it to include a properly branching storyline, the ability to choose a race other than human, to select "lower" versions of tiered force powers that have different effects, and to give it time to mature properly rather than pushing it out the door to meet a marketing goal?
Anyway, +markotark, Looks like you know of Star Citizen. If you are not signed up, may want to check it out. And some day should be able to mod the crud out of it to make it Star Wars. Just need thousands of man-hours to make all the content......

Something I wonder about with star destroyers is how efficiently they operate with such a massive crew. Something like 40,000 plus storm troopers (which probably have independent command structure) right? In all the movies they show these ships run by a captain. Assuming they're roughly following our terminology a captain is a high rank but not nearly high enough to command such a huge crew. Something equivalent to vice admiral is more appropriate. It's the equivalent of a good-sized town in space. And the dreadnaughts are even worse!

I guess that makes sense. Easily mined materials and quickly producible products like the star destroyer would cost less compared to earth's military. Items such as food eventually hit a bottom point where they cannot be mass produced enough to lower the price and end up costing similar amounts in star wars and Earth.

Idiots. The answer is that we're talking GALACTIC Empire. When you have thousands of planets mining metal for a Death Star, you'll have plenty at your disposal.
People need to stop watching Star Wars as if it's real.

why would you NOT buy a used TIE fighter? if it's intact and fit for sale, it SURVIVED.

  • @Aetrion

A thing to note here: You seem to have taken the price of ships from FFGs Starwars Roleplaying system, and that system heavily skews the price of ships down to keep the price of personal scale weapons relevant. In a game system that contains both vehicles and personal equipment it's very difficult to keep the players hungry if the price difference is realistic, since selling a single captured ship at a realistic price would net you enough money to buy thousands of top end rifles for example, so the game needs to adjust the price of the ships way down to stop the party from acquiring so much money that better personal equipment immediately stops being a pursuit or reward the second they capture a single starship.
So, I would take the price list from Age of Rebellion with a big dose of salt. Those prices are written mainly to keep your campaigns economy intact and keep the players hungry when they sell ships, not to be a realistic representation of what those ships are worth.

$6 Billion USD, "Project Orion: Space Battleship"
USAF had 9 on order, A Presidential 'cease and desist' order and the Limited Test Ban Treaty are why none ever saw service
Oh...we also have a Death Star on backorder (same story as the "Space Battleship"), "Doomsday Orion" would literally do the Rogue One thing

The US did not nationalize companies during WWII. They made a deal with the companies to subsidize their transformation from civilian aircraft manufacturing to war effort production, so they wouldn't bankrupt themselves trying to do it on their own. They remained in private ownership.
There are some things that the government did seize control of. One is our train industry, ala public transporation. Trains are vital to our logistical needs but trains always fail to make a profit. Whether it be logistics or expensive to run public transportation, train companies almost always operate in the red. Amtrak is federally owned and needs our tax dollars to survive, else it would have died a long time ago with the Pacific Electric Red Cars. Transporting people is not cheap. The only way it survived back then is because the train companies used it to buy/sell Real Estate and attract tourists to their businesses built on the railways. The train version of Route 66.
The same can be said of our Post Office, but that is more Constitutionally mandated where trains and public transportation are not. Still, Post Offices usually go where private mail carriers do not because they are a government service that is allowed to waste money and time.

The only reason things are probably cheap is because of the amount of different ships and manufacturers in Star Wars. There's also probably additional costs that come with Imperial ships. Plus, they always seem to have quirks. Numbers over quality.

According to Star Wars Wikia, the Super Star Destroyer, the Executor, "... project had taken years to complete,] and the incredible cost to fund the construction of such a large warship-an estimated 1,143,350,000 credits, had *practically bankrupted several star systems*. In fact, years later in 12 ABY, Imperial Admiral Gilad Pellaeon once remarked that the Executor alone had *practically bankrupted the entire Empire*.
The Executor is about 12x the length of and Imperial Class SD, (we'll ignore the ship is larger in all three dimensions ) even so, if one *very* large ship can bring about near financial ruin, imagine what thousands of smaller, albeit still large, ships would cost.

it's probably PARTLY due to them being MUCH more advanced, and more proficient at making stuff like that, AND that the buyer was a evil guy, with magic powers, that had MANY thousand COMPLETELY loyal elite soldiers.

This whole thing is speculation, much of the technology in the Star Wars universe lacks grounding in real science. It is science fantasy, making assumptions based on bits and pieces of movie lore is tenuous at best.

Advanced robotics (cheap labour), asteroid mining (cheap resources in vast quantities), mass production. Model T (after inflation) cost $825 ($22 000 today) 1909, $260 ($3,550 today) in 1925.

Couple of things to keep in mind: with Star Wars advanced technology even today's technology would be much, much cheaper to construct. Additionally, if anything could bring you economies of scale, the resources of thousands, even millions of inhabited worlds could.

    Just for a reference.
It takes 40 million man hours to build a Nimitz class aircraft carrier.
A Imperial class Star Destroyer is about 120 times the volume of a Nimitz class.
Just using the 40 million man hours and no material, to build an aircraft carrier
and the 150 million credit price tag of a Star Destroyer,
that would mean each man is getting paid 3.75 credits per hour,
without the cost of any material.

excellent video the only thing I would add is to take in to consideration inflation. Those ships were built a long long time ago. and with the price of everything doubling approx 10 years that def raises the cost of the items in this video. Have a good one.

So, I'm just going off Star wars the old republic, but the cost of a flagship such as a destroyer goes for 50 mil not including additional room unlocks, and a basic stronghold/apartment costs 5,000 credits to acquire within view of the Senate tower. So I would say a flagship of a destroyer size might be anywhere from 50 mil to 100 mil with expansions. =]
