X100V rings seem to leave a gap as the X100VI has a step. Anyone find one that fits flush? Does the Fuji one?

I have the Haoge hood. It's one of many perfectly acceptable x100 hood solutions. Some comments on your review:
1. I understand to some extent criticism of the lens cap, although it does work as advertised. But in any event what's the use case which needs the lens cap and hood? Hood + filter and throw in a bag/pocket etc. It's never a problem because the hood itself provides more protection than eg the Nisi. Even if the worst happens, replace the filter which is cheap. Whereas the Nisi goes in the bin if glass scratched etc.
2. The comments on the transparency of filters equally apply to the Nisi hood. It's not a better solution optically. I'm highly sceptical of this being a real world problem either way.
3. Dust/water getting inside the hood - if you're worried about this use a filter to weather seal the camera. Lens wipe when you're getting ready for a shooting session as with any camera. Seems a bizarre criticism.
4. Light bouncing around inside the hood - never been a problem in practice & I would expect to outperform the Nisi hood given respective designs. I'm sure the Nisi is just fine but it's a much more open design & more directional light in to the front of the lens.
5. Yes it's an 'inspired by' copy of the Squarehood design - who themselves stole the design from Leica (and other companies including Fujifilm who've previously used square hoods). It's a 49mm lens hood, there are only so many design options and basically all have been done before by someone. It's really not a Squarehood original design is it?
6. The reason people buy it is they like the look of the Squarehood/Leica design and it's half the price of the Squarehood. If you don't want that style, or prefer a slimmer profile there are loads of other good, cheaper options and I'd recommend buying something else. If you like this design, it's a great option and I have had zero real world problems with it.
Yep, you've read way too far into a lens hood review - and it sounds like you're terrified of feeling buyer's remorse... But I'll entertain it:
1 - No, it clearly doesn't work as advertised. A hood is to negate any stray light from entering the lens, a lens cap is for covering the lens - pretty self-explanatory I think. If I were to drop/knock my camera, especially where I can't change the lens out, I'd much rather have a solid piece of metal covering the lens than a thin piece of glass. If "the worst happens" there's every chance a filter will smash and scratch the lens itself.
2 - Flaring happens with or without a filter, but adding an extra layer of glass is always going to worsen the issue. You'd probably notice a bigger difference in lowered contrast/saturation before visible flaring in images (true of the NiSi and any other filter I've used), which is why I say in the video I try not to use filters whenever possible.
3 - That's what the NiSi does, and with the lens cap I don't need to waste time cleaning it every time I start shooting. Honestly I've considered popping the NiSi's filter out a few times to leave me with just the hood, so I can still pop the cap on 💁♂️
4 - If anything the NiSi is a much more enclosed design. Compared side-by-side with the Haoge, the NiSi's filter sits much flusher to the front lens element, reducing area for refraction. Plus when looking through the filter at an angle, all you can see is the black absorptive material - no shiny surfaces in sight.
5 - It's not exactly a one-of-a-kind design with the actual hood, but this particular product is a direct rip-off. Squarehood had the foresight to design an adapter ring to accommodate the X100V's extra lens protrusion, and were the only company doing so - so yes, a Squarehood original design. Granted, they certainly took some Q's from the Leica Q & Summarit 35mm etc for their original efforts with the Mk1, but they still produced the only one like it to fit the X100 series.
6 - I agree. I, like many, wish I had more money.

there is one BIG difference between the Haoge and the Squarehood... The Squarehood, which I own... is very limited on what filter you use. When I first received the Squarehood, the filter that I was already using did NOT fit, you have to find a thinner filter (at Squarehood's site, they actually list 2-3 models that are supported). I, then, had to hunt down a Hoya 49mm protector filter in order to make my X100V "weather sealed", I live in Vancouver and I do a lot of street photography in the rain, so for me, it's absolutely a must. My friend also has an X100V with the Haoge and uses Moment's Cinebloom filter, which I also started using, and I love it... but unfortunately, it does NOT fit the Squarehood... He has no issue with the Cinebloom filter + Haoge LH-X54B. So, I'm placing my order for it as soon as I'm done typing this... I reached out to Squarehood via Facebook messaging, asking them if the new MkIII has addressed the issue (I have the MkII), and perhaps if it's redesigned so that it can work with more options... I saw that they read my message, but they didn't reply, so I'm guessing they didn't address the issue 😒
I see the filter + lens hood as a replacement for a lens cap when I'm on the street.
When I get home I'll put a lens cap on.
I agree, I don't like taking a lens cap on and off (possibly dropping/having to find a place to put it/ losing it). When stored in a camera bag you can use the lenscap then - and the Haoge lenshood is very easy to remove, rather than the Squarehood which requires a tiny screwdriver.
You could also just get the original Fuji Weather Resistant Kit (Adapter ring AR-X100 and 49mm Protector filter PRF-49), if you don't have a filter already. Works fine, no flare, so you don't need an extra lens hood. And somehow, the filter does not attract dust as much as all the B+W filters I have. Great combo, that also looks good. But - the original lens cap will not fit. But any 49mm lens cap fits fine.

You can say whatever you want but the simple point is the original lens cap does NOT fit properly on the Haoge lens cap.

I think the NISI is a poor design if it is trying to be a hood, it is just a filter, not a hood, and there’s no option to add a true hood (to provide shade for the first optical element - the filter). It is convenient though because it is a single item solution compared to other true hood solutions that involve 3 items (screw + filter + hood).

It (lens cap) fits the haoge completely. You just have to shimmy it around it.
The Nisi one is great, I love mine, but the problem I have with it is I cannot put anything else in front of my lens. No diffusion, no polarisation etc. It really limits my experimentation with the camera so I've been using it less and less. I do love it for the size and the ability to be covered by the original cap though.
Yup, I was going to buy the Nisi but then figured, just get teh ar-x100 and keep that on all the time and swap in/out a B+W mrc clear for protection/sealing and a Hoya circular polarizer.
The square hood comes with its own hood cap that fits nice and tight. The original hood cap will not fit as you stated.
Mine did not come with a lens cap.
Mine came with a lens cap as well -- I think the earlier versions didn't ship with one. I guess they heard the negative feedback and decided to include a slightly bigger cap that fits better.
You seem to be compairing apples to oranges here, Haoge produce something similar to the Nisi - the Haoge LUV-X54W. Firstly the squarehood version requires a tiny screwdriver and 2 tiny screws to be tightened (that put me right off). It sounds very fiddly and you can't easily remove the lenshood. I've also heard it's fussy regards the filters you may or may not be able to use. But really the Nisi is just an adaptor and UV Filter, as there is no shade beyond the glass. The Haoge functions as a lenshood to so will cut down flare, protect from light knocks, rain droplets on the lens and fingerprints on the UV Filter (which is positioned within the unit). The lenscap fitting was stretching the truth a bit though - just unscrew the lenshood and use the lenscap if you're putting it back in the bag.

I bought the NiSi on your recommendation and like it very much. I also bought the Haoge, the later version that comes with its own lens cap, also good. I use the NiSi most of the time, it’s a simple and elegant solution. For street stuff at night here in SE Asia I use the Haoge without any filters - mostly as lens protection rather than as a lens hood. Prefer to shoot with no filters whenever I can.

Doode, do you know that Haoge has at least 4, 5 Lens Hoods for the Fujifilm X100V? I use Haoge Lens Hoods basically since they've becoming avialable into China, for many years, and some of my Lenses. Haoge does have excellent quality Lens Hoods.

This is very informative. Thank you so much for sharing this. I like the NiSi filter you showed. I was leaning towards the Haoge one as I can mount the Cine Bloom filter from Moment or Tiffen but I like the simple elegant look of NiSi. For night photography, I am thinking about still buying the Cine Bloom 10% from Moment or Tiffen but not sure if I need to get a separate adapter ring.
Does anyone else have trouble lining up the hoage hood evenly to their camera. Mine just won’t line up no matter what way I start.
Just wish the haoge didn't block flash, otherwise would be perfect for rainy night times which I love to do. Otherwise I'm using it with the Fujifilm protector filter and it's great

I recently bought a circular lens hood from JJC (LH-JX100VII), which is an upgrade of the original JJC “cone shaped” hood for x100. The original one was not fitting the cap, the new one it is (stably) and it also holds 49mm filters.

Haoge didn’t copy Squarehood, square hoods have been around forever, it’s a classic design… Leica have them, so do Fuji, and others... I actually prefer Hoage’s… I see a huge potential of loosing the side screws and the screw driver itself with Squarehood’s design… Removing the hood to properly clean the filter seems complicated… I have the round Hoage hood though, more stealthy than the square one IMO…

Dodgy marketing aside, I think the LH-X54 is one of the best lens hoods you can get for an X100 series camera, and I have owned quite a few of them. I don't agree that it's a blatant rip off of Squarehood. Sure, Haoge saw the popularity of Squarehood, and wanted to capitalize on it, but in my opinion they designed a better product. I also own a Squarehood mkII, and the mounting/alignment system with the little set screws is not a very reliable solution. It's OK if you mount a filter once and leave it on forever, or if you don't use a filter at all, but if you have any plans on switching between different filters, it's only a matter of time before you lose or strip one of the tiny screws. Plus the overall construction of the hood feels kinda thin and flimsy, at least compared to the Haoge.
Anyway, thanks for a good and informative video!

Honestly I'd assumed the build etc would've been superior compared to the Haoge - I guess that's the cheap, Chinese, mass-made stereotype talking 🤷♂️ I'll be honest, I think I was so peeved at the lens cap not fitting that it set the tone for the rest of the video 🤣

I know this is old but I can confirm -- I had the first version of the squarehood for the x100 series and the tiny screw stripped the first time I even attached it to the camera. Furthermore, I've owned the squarehoods for the Fuji 23 and 35 f2 lenses and the paint finish on them is so bad that they scratched the first time I put my camera in a soft lined camera bag. Overall square hood is a huge ripoff and marketing gimmick IMO. They focus on how good the product looks on social media but the build is below sub-par for the price you pay. I'm glad somebody is taking their design and actually putting a better build quality behind it -- even if it isn't quite as slick looking.
Squarehood would be more justifiable if they were the one company who made this style of hood with a flipping bayonet. Why hasn’t anyone made a bayonet adapter and square hood. Screw on hoods suck.

Hi there, do you happen to know the outside diameter of the threads on the adapter ring? Ie the bit that threads into the inside of the hood itself?
Great review, could you tell me what size filter you used (is it 49mm or 52mm)? I have a good spare 52mm so would rather not have to buy a 49mm haveing just bought the camera.
Long story short, Amazon screwed up an order and now I own two Haoge lens hoods for my x100v so I got some time to test them out.
If anyone wonder how to thread the hood so it sits horizontally but not being too loose or two tight, I tested both and I think I found a recipe to get it perfectly aligned and snug. Try to start threading the hood in 11 to 12 o'clock position with the longer side of the hood rectangle perpendicular to the ground (in vertical position). For me, it always gets in the right position without puttig excessive force to thread it.

Unfortunately not working for me. I have tried so many start positions. The hood will not align with the camera and sits slightly off vertical. Otherwise, it will be too loose if I adjust it.
Something wrong here, you have compared the Haoge square hood with the NISI, but you should have compared the Haoge LUV-X54W Metal Lens Hood with MC UV Protection Multicoated Ultraviolet Lens Filter for Fujifilm Fuji X100V Camera Silver. This Hoague is almost identical but has the filter deeper recessed providing more "lens-shade".
Nothing wrong at all, it's exactly the video I set out to make. There's plenty of videos out there on the other options 🤷♂️

I wish I had done the same. Mine won’t even line up level. It did at the beginning but I’m afraid to force it. I love NiSi products but the polariser in their set is rendered useless if you try to use a graduated Nd.. Pity
New X100V user here. I actually bought this hood and the Nisi. Plan on using Haoge alone most of the time, but Nisi if shooting in weather, dust, etc. anyone find a cover to fit this Haoge hood as of today? I like this Haoge better then other larger version that comes with a hood. Or should I return this one and go with the other Haoge?
If I only use the Adaptor ring + UV filter without putting on the actual hood, is still weather resistant? 🤔🤔🤔

The description in the Amazon product page is actually correct. It LITERALLY says “Original Fujifilm lens cap can be mount on top of the LENS”
It doesn’t say “on top of the lens HOOD”
If you only use the Haoge adapter ring plus the Fujifilm clear lens filter it will actually allow to have the originals lens cap on top of it. They could have definitely elaborated more in the description but if you read it literally it doesn’t say LENS HOOD.
Literally, I agree. But they're selling a hood, I'm not sure they were aiming to show off a feature of the camera itself - and nobody's buying this purely for the adapter ring.
Update - I just tried sticking the lens cap over the adapter ring with a clear filter... It doesn't fit. It'll fit on with just the adapter ring, but what's the point in that?
@@FamauMedia They definitely should update the product description to not contain misinformation. I actually just want the ring adapter so I can add filter and weather-seal. Not interested in the hood as it adds width to the camera.
@@FamauMedia Now you’re making wonder if the single Haoge ring adapter it’s the same that comes with the Haoge hood. I just ordered mine cause I saw a TH-cam video where the Haoge ring and Fujifilm clear filter accommodate the Fuji lens cap.
Update: I just noticed the single Haoge Adapter ring is not the same as the one that comes with the (Haoge) lens hood. Maybe an an idea for a future video? For people like me that just want to weather-seal/protect lens and still be able to put the original Fuji lens cap on top.
I didn't like the Nisi filter. It had a bluish cast and quite bad flaring compared to Hoya hd-protector. Now I'm using Squarehood and that same Haoge with Hoya HD and Tiffen black pro-mist. Much better end result.
You're using two hoods?
Not at the same time...lol 😆 Squarehood mk II has maybe a better finish than Haoge but it's not perfect either. Tiffen pro-mist doesn't fit properly like it does with Haoge. It's doable but scratches the inside of the hood.
I know, I have too many hoods for my X100V (model V, mk II, Haoge and Fuji original). 😄
But to wrap this up, I think that the model V and Haoge are the best solutions.

Hi Ben. Thanks for this helpful review. I’ve just bought an X100V and have been looking for something to weatherproof and protect the lens and the NiSi looks good. In your video it looks almost the same size when fitted as the ‘naked’ plus lens cap. Is that right? I’m thinking of buying the Fuji LC-X100V leather case but I’ve read that it’s too tight to fit with any aftermarket filter and hood. I’m wondering if the case would fit with the NiSi and no lens cap - given that i would have the case covering the lens when not in use. I’d appreciate your advice. Thanks. Jon
Hi Jon, thanks for watching! I've never used/held this case, so I've no idea to be honest. I've since sold my X100V but I think the filter added roughly 3-4mm to the lens (guesstimating). I'd assume if you can fit the lens cap on with the case, the filter would fit in place of it - but don't hold me to that 💁♂️

I've got the nisi filter and use the lens cap. The fuji case fits over both the filter and the lens cap together. It comes off easily enough too
