      Excellent choice! I've been using the Haoge LH-X49B on my X100T and love it, it even allows the use of the OEM lens cap! I recently bought the NiSi UHD filter as well, I love them both :)

    For those considering buying the Squarehood and using it with filters, I recommend also checking out the Haoge LH-X54. I own both, and I actually prefer the Haoge. It's a simpler design (although not quite as nice looking) with only two parts, which makes it easier to switch filters, or go between filter/no filter.
    But if you don't plan on using a filter, the Squarehood is the better choice, it looks nicer and keeps the camera slightly more compact.

      That one cast a shadow with the flash and doesn’t lock in place !!! Terrible

    • @mynameisjonas80
      @mynameisjonas80 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it does cast a shadow, but so does the Squarehood, at least when using the filter adapter ring (I haven't used mine in over 2 years so I can't remember if there's a shadow without the adapter).
      My LH-X54 locks in place just fine, are you sure you haven't lost the little red rubber gasket? You do have to turn the hood quite hard to lock it in place and align it properly, almost to the point where it feels like you're tightening it too hard.

    • @SneakyCaleb
      @SneakyCaleb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mynameisjonas80 squarehood has a new mk iii model that doesn’t cast a shadow even with a filter. The red rubber gasket holds it well enough most of the time but I’ve still had it bumped and loosened off.

    The different in shade definitely messes up my OCD… lol… That’s why I ordered my x100v in black… Also because it is more stealthy… I think I’ll stick with the Fuji hood though… I can see myself loosing that screw driver and having the square hood stuck to my lens forever…

    I also got the same silver SquareHood and I love their updated adapter ring. I agree with you about the silver colour doesn't match. So black X100V would be better match with black SquareHood. Maybe in the future Fujifilm can put black lens on silver body. Many old film rangefinder did it this way. Some old rangefinder lens even have both black and silver colour like the Olympus 35SP.

      @@MattBrandon When you screw the hood, does the screw touch the filter or the adapter ring?

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlexChanHomeMeals Sorry for the delay, if you are using the filter adapter then it screws onto the filter. (if you look closely on the video you will see the mark it made on the filter due to me screwing it too tight. However, if you are using just the lens hood then it screws and tightens onto part of the hood that is threaded. The screws never touch the camera body.

  • @LetMeFixThis
    @LetMeFixThis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Matt, thank you so much for the review, which is giving a lot of consideration to the various options. There´s however one reason I would not go for a square hood, whether from Squarehood or else - it´s impossible to use a polarizing filter with a square hood, as the filter needs to be rotated to work properly. Polarizing filters are impossible to "fake" by digital means, so you either have one on your lens or you don´t get the beautiful effects. Using the Squarehood hood one will always have to loosen the screws, detach the hood, mountand use the P filter, then reverse the whole process. With a circular hood, which (by form, not by size) typically do the trick even on fullsize DSLR´s, it´s much easier as the circular hoods do not need to be secured in place with tiny screws. Cheers; Chris

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a very good point. That and it’s just bulky to pack with the hood on.

  • @vu1cana
    @vu1cana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I disagree that the problem of color matching only is a small issue for some people. If you're getting this camera that's ABSOLUTELY gorgeous, plus the price of the squarehood, you better expect it's exactly the same and matches perfectly.
    Thankfully I own a black x100v and this isn't a huge issue for me, I preferred the incognito look. I feel bad for those who got the silver one, which aesthetically is more eyecatching therefore deserves more attention to detail for accesories.

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I don't see that it is that much of a colour difference. I admit there is some. But you'd have to be looking for it to see it. No one I have shown the lens hood to has ever mentioned it.

    Got the version for the 23mm f2 on my XE3. Although I also lost the square cover that comes with it, I have a thin B+W UV filter on it and it works great. No clearance issues and the Squarehood also acts like another form of physical protection. 10/10 would recommend.

    However, swapping between cirPol and black mist filters take priority over the lens hood. I use the circular vented lens hood, if even that. Gotta be able to swap filters fast without a screw driver!

  • @billjohnstonjr.1037
    @billjohnstonjr.1037 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for this installation walk-through. I'd not been able to figure out how to use the UV filter with the hood assembly. As you point out, you have to remove the inner sleeve to the square hood by loosening those tiny little pressure screws just enough to pry out the sleeve. If you remove them too far, as I did, such that they come out entirely, it's a pain to get them back in place. The inner sleeve of the hood needs to come out in order to fit the hood back on the filter. Otherwise, sleeve in place, it's too small to refit the hood over the filter. Needless to say, the instructions from Squarehood are inadequate.

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Johnston, Jr. The other small thing to be aware of is that when you do get it on the filter, be careful not to tighten down those screws too much. They will leave a mark on the outside of the filter. Most people won’t care, but if you ever want to use the filter again, especially if it’s a black filter, you will have noticeable marks on it. As I said, it’s a minor thing and most folks won’t care.

      All the info is at the end of the video in the credits. But I short: I used a Fujifilm X-T3 with the Fuji XF 23 1.4 lens as my main camera, I was not using any film simulations. But I did color balance it with a grey card. I used a Onsmo GoLive 360 LED light in a 24" softbox to my left - camera right, and a 5" LED Lumi Pocket RGB set to (3100K) on the background. The XF 23mm doesn't have any vignetting, I think you feel like it because of the light drop off in the room. I had no other lights on but these.

      @MattBrandon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. The Square Lens cap is, well, square and protrudes further out than the OEM round lens cap.

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am pretty sure there is no difference in how it is installed. The only difference between the two cameras in the depth in which the lens moves when focusing. This newest version gives room for that movement. So it would work fine.

      @@MattBrandon I ended up ordering via square hood. It's 18.20 Eu shipping fee to Canada for a 2.5Eu item. So i ordered a few. Wish they just used regular size small screws i could pickup at any hardware store.
      Side note. The hood for Fujifilm X70 works perfectly with the 100V. It's small and looks very smart. Added bonus, the original metal lens cap for 100V will fit over the lens hood.

    Does the hood effect the shape of the bokeh?

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The bokeh is affected by the blades of the aperture or some other device like a filter that covers the lens. If a lens hood effects anything it would be vignetting the field of view, but it doesn't do that either.

    • @JesseDanaJD
      @JesseDanaJD 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Brandon ok cool. I’ve used hoods before that cut the tops and bottoms off the oval bokeh in extreme cases and I wanted to be sure before buying. Thanks!

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jesse Dana that’s really interesting. I’ve never had that happen. I’ve only had it cause vignetting. Nevertheless this hood doesn’t do either so you’re good to go!

    What a complicated silly hood and they couldn't match the color for that money? Set screws can damage threads! No thanks!

    • @MattBrandon
      @MattBrandon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your feedback. The set screws don’t touch the threads. There is an inner sleeve that screws on the lens thread and the set screws screw on to the sleeve and allow adjustment of the hood.

      @@MattBrandon I looked at other options and ordered a few different hoods. This is my review of the Squarehood: I ordered the sensible round hood and adapter for 15 bucks off Amazon, but of course I had to have that slick look like the cool kids have. So I spent 80 bucks on the metal Squarehood, which I liked because it was square and even has a square lens cap!
      The tiny set screws that hold this thing in place are so small...god help you if you drop one! Try not to screw them back too far. They are smaller than an ant's right testicle, which is notably smaller than the left.
      The good news is that it fits well and I really dig the retro look. The little square lens cap is a nice touch. It fit well with the B+W XS-Pro UV Haze MRC-Nano 010m filter and seems reasonably secure.
      Now...It it worth the cost? Does Yoda have good diction? It's not just overpriced; it's hilariously overpriced and really a total indulgence, just like the articulated thumb grip and brass shutter I added. But HEY, life is short and I like it.
