  • Today we take a dive into the sourcebooks to learn a little more about one of the more influential Periphery states. They're plucky, they're feisty, they're the Magistracy of Canopus.
    Thanks to @MagestrixRiley on Twitter for the shared images and permission to use the cover from the very cool fan-made Magesitracy of Canopus Technical Readout.

    A major pillar of the Canopian economy, besides “entertainment” and the growing industrial sector, is medicine. During the Succession Wars they offered the best medical care in known space and even now theirs is roughly on the same level as the Clans. It’s available for everyone but not free though, especially for those from the Inner Sphere.

      Well for citizenry it's socialized healthcare which is nice (similar to the Taurian Concordat but with far more resources/knowledge compared to them). Seems that similarly to other countries in our own time there is likely medical tourism especially considering one could get medical treatments and then enjoy the variety of entertainment present within the Magistracy for very good prices (real world example: lots of people travel to South Korea for a variety of both medical and aesthetic procedures and then spend time in literal medical hotels with spa and other services).

    • @jiriz0r
      @jiriz0r ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Sablus Medical tourism would certainly be supported by the regular Canopian tourism sector but that’s more of an added bonus. Before the technological renaissance of the 3040’s the Magistracy was the only place in the Inner Sphere where Star League level healthcare was preserved. For example they maintained the only functioning stasis tubes outside Clan space so patient in life threatening conditions could be kept safe and stable until treatment was available.
      Canopus was the only place in known space where certain medical conditions and illnesses were not an immediate death sentence and the rest of the Sphere knew it. Sure it may not be available to anyone but the elite due to prohibitive costs but that’s what three centuries of infrastructure collapse by galactic total war gets you.

    It’s ironic that some of the periphery powers are arguably higher on the “good” scale than the usual protagonist factions in the setting. Sounds like living in the Concordat or the Magistracy is a pretty sweet deal compared to their Successor State neighbor nations, excluding the periodic invasions by Marian or Davion forces.

    • @robrib2682
      @robrib2682 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly living in the Magistery is pretty good if you're a woman because until I think the most recent era they have the equivalence of 1950s suffrage movements going on just to try and get equal rights (except the genders are switched, welcome to canopus xD)
      Edit: although the concordat isn't much better in some respects as well because if you aren't competent in the military you should expect to be shot for dereliction of duty or some other infraction.
      Edit 2: although all that is to say that it isn't necessarily better to live in the periphery Nations then the great houses it's just different by-and-large for most of them

      @melvinlemay7366 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pffft, yea no. The Concordat's history is riddled with massacres slaughter antagonism and even the proliferation of cancer gun of all things. And Canopus is one of the pre-eminent causes and participants in human trafficking throughout the sphere, are despite their rhetoric one of the few major states to allow for outright slavery within their borders, and have some of the greatest problems with corporate corruption and overreach in the sphere.

    • @Bluehairedgirl89
      @Bluehairedgirl89 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Overall I agree, although I’ll qualify that by saying that life in the periphery states are hard because the worlds are tougher, resources are more scare, the economy is weaker, tech is more primitive, and their are bandits and pirates. But while it is harder the governments like the Magistracy, the Concordat, and the Outworlds Alliance are better and seem to genuinely treat their people better.

    • @MechanicalFrog

      @@Bluehairedgirl89 To some extent. @@MechanicalFrog there is, look up Hardcore. It’s a planet in Canopus I can only describe as Solaris Periphery Edition. Mech Gladiator fights, Battle Armor Arenas, even a MMA group called the Hardcore Ultimate Fighters League which recently has had a scandal where several contestants were accused of genetic tampering, cybernetic augmentation, and performance enhancing drugs. The HUFL apparently tries to maintain a reputation as a clean league to separate itself from the “freak leagues” as they call them. That’s actually another thing. Due to the Department of Mega Engineering having multiple sites that did gene editing like Frobisher and McEvedy’s Folly they have genetic engineering on top of the Cybernetics. Periphery First edition had a segment on verbatim genetically engineered mermaids and given that was the purpose for project Pisces Umbrella on Frobsher well you can draw your own conclusions lol. Seriously everyone goes for Catgirls but we’ve explicitly had mermaids and centaurs since Periphery First Edition in 1988 lol

    The video is very good. I think two things could have been mentioned to improve it
    1: the Trinity Alliance. You mention at the very end that Canopus has a alliance with Cappela, but the dept and extend of this alliance, first as the Trinity Alliance (Founded 3058) including the Taurians and then as just a alliance between Canopus and Cappela is practically why Canopus is as strong as it is right now, thanks to Trinity Battle Armor program and the ressource funding the Cappelans provide the canopians. Most importantly however this alliance provides Canopus with a military Ally that is more then capable of defending it, and well likely see a joint operation to take Terra during the ILClan era.
    2: Canopus has the most extensive list of Homegrown and Homeproduced mech designs out of any Periphery Nation! While mentioning the Caliope was great , the Eyleuka and Ebony are far more well known Canopian Mech designs and the other 3 they produce (Argoterra, Anubis and Penthesilea) are all mechs that are formidable, especially considering they are designed by and produced only in Canopus!
    Lastly a mention of the Ebon Magistrate, canopuses own Intelligence Agency would have been cool cause they are my favorite :p
    Its a great video still, and i love your work!

    An excellent primer on the Magistracy. It's also good to note the Magistracy has had some difficulties with its relationship with Liao as of late. The Marians have been pushed out of Marik and Canopian space, and there is a four regiment force on its way to the capital of the Marian Hegemony, Alphard to stop the attacks. Who knows if they'll be successful?

    I see some intriguing parallels between the Magistracy and the American 'wild west'. My understanding is that many of the mining towns were built by women operating houses of pleasure and many of them became mayors or political leaders as these areas grew. Many of these mining towns were no more than small tent camps and only grew into towns once these 'houses' were built. Also I believe it was Wyoming that wrote a special clause in its constitution when becoming an official state that allowed women to hold office and vote, which was quite progressive at the time.

    Their representative legislature was created only due to House Marik influence. Also each planet gets two Electors to serve for life and nominate the next Magistrix(works the same as it was in the old Holy Roman Empire). While officially Electora are nominated, House Centrella long ago won the right to appoint some Hereditary Electors. Because an Elector literally does nothing else, this position is used as and for political favors.I always felt in my headcanon that one elector was the democratically elected and the other one was an appointee/hereditary.
    They organized a joint colonzation project with Taurians during the 3060s and were part of a alliance with House Liao that led to House Liao and House Centrella being linked by marriage.

    A storyline that I think would be an obvious thing for the Canopians to try goes back to when the Wolf's Dragoons briefed the Innersphere and Periphery on who and what the Clans were at the beginning of the Clan invasion.
    I think some "nobles" with ties to what was left of the Magistracies biotechnology industries might have thought it was worth MIMs time and effort to learn as much as possible about Clan biotechnology and genetic engineering. To me this might result in MIM hiring or creating a mercenary unit to actively attempt to capture trueborn clanners to either take them or their genetics back to Magistracy space. Other goals would include the capture of clan science caste medical professionals and equipment or anything to do with the genecaste. How successful there were dosen't mater as much as the fact they have had more than a century to try. Even if it took the decades to succeed even a little, by the time of the Ilclan Era, the results of such labor might become a thing. Add to this that for a brief period of the last century it was possible to travel to and from the Sol System, and an information exchange could occur with the genetic engineers of Luna and the belt. Their are no "aliens" in Battletech, but really weird humans has been part of the history since the 1980s.
    That and I thought the merging of the Clan Elemental and Canopian Centaur would make for some interesting Quadruped Battlearmor, and a Centaur built like a Clydesdale. "Mermaids" that have a higher tolerance to pressure being aerospace pilots, able to better handle higher g-force than normal humans, with an innate sense of 3 dimensional space and thinking. "Harpies" or "Angels" able to move like but much quieter that VTOL or Jump Infantry and able to safely land in buildings or trees acting as forward observers. It would only require small tweaks to the rules for animal mounted infantry, in the Tactical Operations books, and be advanced rules.
    Or maybe I just enjoy mixing Fantasy and Sci-fi more than most I did enjoy the Shadowrun setting alot. This is the premise behind a mercenary unit, and traveling circus, I've created.

    Ah yes the weird place.. I actively avoid them in HBS Battletech, not only are they so far away from the sphere it literally takes a month to jump there even by the quickest route (longer in MechWarrior 5 and MechWarrior 2 Mercenaries... 2 to 4 months), their payouts are also lousy, jobs offerings mediocre low rating and salvage so common, their problem is mostly pirates with banged up rusty half rotted mechs you can find anywhere in the periphery such as a grab bag of Vindicators, Javelins and Quickdraws - not worth your time.
    The only reason you'd ever go there is if you *royally* screwed up in hardcore mode in Battletech or Mercenaries and are forced to hang around there doing 1 to 2 star jobs for half a year while you lick your wounds feeling sorry for yourself.
    Unfortunately the soul reason to go there, which is to purchase their famously good 40 ton mech isn't available in the video games, there is no point going there.

    At this point I honestly believe that the writers for Battletech's background universe just were/are lazy. Even rigid aristocracies tend to have new families and dynasties come in every few centuries, yet this is a universe where every single major power block ends up having a single family ruling it for a thousand years.
    It kinda bums me out that they did this to Canopis too - it would be interesting to have even one state where the leaders actually change every so often, and sometimes change the balance of power or external alliances as they do so.
