  • Lifespan: Why We Age-and Why We Don’t Have To
    Featuring Dr. David Sinclair, professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School and author of “Lifespan: Why We Age-and Why We Don’t Have To.” Dr. Sinclair explores the research that is pushing the boundaries of our perceived scientific limitations, revealing incredible breakthroughs that demonstrate how we can slow down, or even reverse, aging. He also delves into emerging technologies and simple lifestyle changes that have been shown to help us live younger and healthier for longer. Presented as part of the Murdock Mind, Body, Spirit Series.

      And yet.... he keeps hedging and downplaying the arrival of an actual age reversal treatment? Is this all just flim-flammery? I agree that the treatments for specific ailments are great, but let's face it. An extra five years? I'm not here for that. I'm waiting for full body regeneration. Otherwise, even with treatments for the ailments of aging, it's still suffering. I hope the governments/corporations aren't slowing this down. Hope I'm wrong here. Fingers crossed. If David is looking for volunteers for total body regeneration, I'm here dude!

    I think David could reframe his aging car analogy to say "aging is similar to the wear and tear on cars, except the mechanic tasked with repairing it gets progressively worse at keeping it running."
    Another way you might frame it is "aging is like having a car where wear and tear outpaces the ability of the mechanic to repair all the problems."

    At last the update on modern longevity research we have been waiting for. David proves time and again that he is at the cutting edge of a dynamic area of science and technology.
    I’ve had some of my best years since starting nmn and Resveratrol but still cannot say whether they had any effect at all. Maybe it was my will to live and enjoy life that made the difference. I do notice how many commentators are citing religious ideas which is quite interesting to me as a clinician. Placebo is a powerful medicine and even to ranking medical advances struggle to compete against the placebo effect.

    If I'm taking some supplements recommended to work by one study, is there any point in adding others recommended by other studies or would there be diminishing returns to adding things which probably act on the same pathways?

    • @clearpupil
      @clearpupil หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. And I think you’re correct. Some of these supplements rapidly reverse biological age by 5-10 years. But there are factors like illness, stress and prolonged bed rest for any reason that will increase biological age by up to 30 years. So it is an equilibrium not a one way arrow backwards and as you say, diminishing returns.

    We all want to live long, healthy lives, and most of us can. But some of us have genetic hurdles to overcome. I found out through GBinsight’s Longevity100 test that I have high Lp(a), which significantly increases my risk for heart disease. Knowing this, along with a family history of heart attacks, means I need to do everything I can to stay healthy, like not smoking, staying active, and eating well. I've talked to my doctor, and now we have a better understanding of my risk so we can take extra steps to keep my heart healthy.

      I had this test done too and my doctor found a genetic mutation causing me to hyper-absorb cholesterol. It means my body isn't clearing the cholesterol I ingest from my diet, so it was accumulating in my blood. I found out I could easily change a few things in my diet and reduce my cholesterol levels significantly. Didn't have to be on meds. This probably added years to my life since I am in my 20s and making big changes.

    By definition, if cells can regenerate, life should be able to live forever. So it is reasonable to assume that the aging process is not primordial rather it is added later to deliberately sabotage the life during early years of evolution. In other words, it is more likely than not that the initial life forms were long lived because in a self-regenerated life form, the aging process is not trivial and intrinsically unnecessary for the life form. The reason that all living beings have aging process is because the "natural selection" prefers short lived generational life forms over the long lived life forms for obvious reason: better adaptation for environmental changes and faster evolution due to exponential genetic mutations from generational offsprings.
    Today, human have evolved into a highly advanced creature, we no longer depend on biological evolution, we evolve ourselves through sciences and lab experiments. Without natural evolution, the aging process has no more biological usefulness, it is time to stop it !
    Or is it ? in fact, we are not really sure if there are other critical roles played by the aging process. Living forever may create many issues to a society, which cannot be overcome. It also may create issues for the individuals who seemingly benefit from it, living the same life again and again and you know there is no ending, all hell may break loose.

      People who say he is a scammer clearly are not Biologists, let alone geneticists. I don’t take medical advice from my plumber either.
