The indie Dreamcast scene is definitely something you should look at. The fact that this console still gets new pressed games that you can pick up at retail or online 20 plus years later is insane. We got Interpid Izzy, Textorcist, Xenocider just to name a few
I just got a DC for the first time as a birthday present this year and I’m loving it. My daughter and I play together and it’s fun to share things like that with her. Also enjoying watching you rediscover your system. I got a Marseille upscaler and it makes a huge difference on this system. I don’t do a lot of upscalers in general but I highly recommend this one.
I used to have the 'Packapunch' SCART cable for Dreamcast. It has a switch for switching between VGA and non -VGA games. Used it with my OSSC. I preferred the sharpness of using a VGA cable to OSSC though. Ultimately, I ended up getting a DCHDMI modded Dreamcast and installed the Terraonion MODE with a 1tb hard drive. Super happy with the result. Wireless controller solutions using the Wingman SD adapter. The Dreamcast is my favorite console of all time.
Love to see people putting respect on the Dreamcast. I’ve owned mine since 2005, bought from a college friend for $60 along with Sonic Adventure. Have built up a modest library of some of the more sought after titles and power it on a handful of times a year. Great system.
The DC is the best. It was the crossroads between retro and modern gaming and as a result scratches every itch. Even if it was before it's time. Cool content!
Console5 kit for a power supply recap is all but mandatory, GDEMU is totally worth it for preserving your game library, the noctua fan upgrade is a definite must, amazon has a controller port upgrade kit to change to a replaceable battery, a resettable fuse and an RGB LED if you want, (the cap and resistor included arent great), DC Digital output looks amazing if you so choose.
If your Dreamcast it's a VA1 (check for the number 1 rounded by a circle under the sticker on bottom of console) just get a GDEMU. It replaces te optical drive with a SD Card slot where you can put your games on. It's plug and play, no solder required, can boot games from any region, force VGA mode on ALL games, and you can play the Atomiswave arcade games thats recently converted to Dreamcast, and play some emulators as well
I actually own 7 dreamcasts currently and have spent years refurbishing systems. Things I'd recommend: -Change the internal battery. Its actually a rechargeable button cell, but you can do a simple mod to replace it. -The Akura is a major upgrade from the pound cable and is probably the best option without modding the system -New Power Supply/Fan. There are newer power supply options that will keep your system cooler and also help with other add ons. -GDEmu. If you can get a spare dreamcast, you can remove the gdrom drive and swap it with a gdemu. This is a board that lets you run games off an SD Card. Not only do they load a bit faster, its more convenient. I have a massive dreamcast collection, but only use the gd emu to play them. Dreamcast gdrom discs are super susceptible to scratches, and this can save you from buying used games and not being able to play them.
I still play my DC regularly, it still is a fantastic console. There are a heap of mods and upgrades to bring the DC into the modern era, namely: - DCEMU (allows to play Atomiswave ports too) - Noctua fan upgrade - Battery & resettable fuse upgrade I also highly recommend the DC Digital upgrade, pure digital HDMI is glorious. The Brook Wingman SD is also recommended as it allows you to use Xbox/PS controllers wirelessly. There are other not so important upgrades like installing a custom BIOS.
I bought my Dreamcast in 2022 and this is how i started my collection where Dreamcast is the jewel in the crown. I play it on CRT which allows using lightguns for HOD2, replace GD-ROM with GDemu and you get yourself a lifetime of gaming experience.
Hi Kevin, the Dreamcast was fav console ever. Just too many good memories, even more than the PS2 dare I say. There was a game that was t really great, sub-par graphics but beautiful in that it allowed you to free roam called ‘Toy Commander’. You essentially different toy vehicles (car, plane etc) in a kitchen setting environment and you can waltz around. Just saw some clips and it brought back a wave of nostalgia. Again not a phenomenal game in any way, but a nice play about game if you’re interested 😄
Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2, Rez, San Francisco Rush 2049, Space Channel 5, Star Wars Pod Racer, Super Magnetic Neo, and Trickstyle were the ones I played back in the day
If your looking for hdmi options. The Gekko or the Akura is the best option for plug and play, DCHD is the best overall internal mod but requires soldering. I would also recommend modding your Dreamcast with the GDEMU and you can play all the games off an sd card. And a power supply mod as well. This will give you the ultimate experience out of the hardware.
Playing the Dreamcast was literally my first memory and i want to get one again, such a unique system and i can only imagine how well it would have done if it had a second analogue stick and DVD capabilities.
The Dreamcast actually did fairly well in the US. Unfortunately, Sega was in such a mess financially from the previous generation that almost nothing could have saved the company. It was a miracle they were even able to go 3rd party.
I have to thank you for this video because this is still my fav console I've ever owned. Mine was unfortunately stolen in my college days, and I never got around to getting another. It was the first one I bought with my own money and on launch. Be sure to check out Outrigger, Dynamite Cop, and Skies of Arcadia (1st rpg I ever finished). Lots of memories.
I always wanted this system. I read all the review magazines and coming from a megadrive it looked like the future. The VMU thing blew my mind and the fact it connected to the internet was unbelievable. Sadly my dad knew a ‘computer’ guy at work who said nah, there’s loads more cool games on the PlayStation, and so we went PlayStation.
One thing to definitely look out for is whether HDRetroVision actually provides an update on the Dreamcast cable they have been supposedly working on for years. I honestly don't expect an announcement anytime soon, but I'm sure the Internet will break when they do.
My preferred method would be to play my Dreamcast using a high quality component cable like I do with my PS2 fat, OG Xbox and Sega Saturn. I route these component outputs into a gcomp 8x2 switch. One of the 2 component outputs goes to a 27” Samsung EDTV and the other to Retrotink 5 x pro. I love this setup BUT I’ve been unable to find a component cable for the Dreamcast. In the interim I use a Keico Dreamcast vga cable to an old crt computer monitor. It looks awesome! Great video as always. Have been subscribed for a couple of years but never chimed in before!
Noticed a typo at 2:32: “Retrovision 5X Pro” Great video overall. Definitely check out the Retro-Access SCART cable for use with your 5X. It’s the best SCART cable available for the Dreamcast and has a built-in switch for 480i and 480p (VGA mode). The second best solution would probably be the Behar Bros Toro, which also allows you to use VGA mode via SCART, but there are reports that the 480p video output has a pink hue (something I have not personally noticed with mine - YMMV).
I hope Brett crushes it. It's a German folk tale I believe. There weren't Hispanics or blacks in Germany back then. All they had to do was follow the story. A beautiful woman, a hero, some sidekicks and a evil witch. It's not that difficult
Retro-Bit is working on a Dreamcast controller, continuing their line of licensed-but-modified Sega controllers, like the Genesis 8-button. Their mockup shows it bringing in the most hyped elements of the older Sega pads, with a Genesis/Saturn-style disc-type d-pad, and shoulder buttons mirrored to additional face buttons to bring back the six-button style. Available wired & wireless like their other controllers. tho it was announced in Apr. 2020 to be released late in that year. Chip shortage etc. has delayed it. Maybe it'll be released someday!
I wish man because one of my mistakes of the past was when I let mine go, I should’ve kept my Dreamcast I wasn’t aware of such a large homebrew community until too late 💫 I took it personal when they canceled half-life for the Dreamcast already had a pre-order. Also it didn’t help that the original Dreamcast controller was one of the most uncomfortable controllers ever made.
The original power stone was amazing I wish Capcom would remake that game also the guts rage game was really good as well there was so many good games on dreamcast
It’s dead the only ones who can bring it back to life are the publishers who are making new releases I see so many games that goes on Xbox series X PS5 that can go on Dreamcast but just aren’t
A Dreamcast Mini could be potentially difficult as the three regions (JP,US,EU) all got different game libraries. To me Shenmue 2 would need to be on it but the game did not release in the US.
Enjoyed this video Kevin…ask Jon (SpawnWave) to do the DCHDMI mod for you! I missed this gen growing up and picked up a Dreamcast cheap a few years ago wanting to explore the library. Capcom showed out for the console but of course those are some of the priciest games. If you do mod it and go region unlocked Capcom vs SNK 2 is pure gold.
Definitely invest in a bitfun x HDMI adapter, besides the akura, they make the best HDMI adapters on the market. Well, either them, kaico, both are excellent. Though mine is modified with a self repairing controller port fuse, and a noctua fan upgrade. Never been a big fan of pound, though the pound Saturn adapter has gotten good reviews on Amazon.
I just downloaded the whole DC library and bought my GDEMU so I can I play them all from one SD card. The DC Digital is next and a Noctua fan upgrade. I have a Dream PSU as well. Just some ideas for you to play around with. I'm doing the same to my GameCube as well.
There is ONE major flaw with the Akura and all Behar Bro Dreamcast devices: They do not upscale. If your tv (which nearly ALL modern tv's these days, espeically anything that is 4K) does not have the ability to recognize a 480p signal it will not work at all. If all they did was not bother with scanline functionality and instead put in an upscaler option it would be the perfect Dreamcast device for it's price point. You would not need a framemeister, or OSSC or Retrotink. That would literally be all you needed. It's heartbreaking that they made the perfect solution but rendered it useless with one decision.
Not sure if you’ve played Project Justice before, but it’s the sequel to Rival Schools for PlayStation. It’s on the pricier side, but is a lot of fun and exclusive to the Dreamcast ☕️ 🎮
at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of the buffet.
I'm pretty sure theres a trick for VGA on those games it doesn't work with where you plug the video cord in right as its booting. Or you could just use a cheat disc
I actually still have my physical copy of Power Stone 2, I would still have a physical copy of Power Stone 1 as well but that got stolen😑 I also saw my physical copy of Blue Stinger, I just don't have a working Sega Dreamcast anymore😭 four Sega Dreamcast and the controller slots are all fried ( one of them I had to take apart to fix another one's disk drive).
I do have the entire Dreamacast Collection, but I have them burned buying those games now are way too expensive as much as l would love originals It's just way too expensive especially some games are more expensive than the console one you should try is Project Justice one of the better fighting games on the system.
I have off-white one. But someone lost my cords years ago when unhooking it to make room for a new console one system. I was a kid so I wasnt involved. And didnt realize until years later.
The indie Dreamcast scene is definitely something you should look at. The fact that this console still gets new pressed games that you can pick up at retail or online 20 plus years later is insane.

My favorite memories of the Dreamcast are standard versions of Sonic Adventure one and two.

Sadly even when forcing VGA not every game will work. WWE Attitude comes to mind.
Love that you featured Evolution in this video! It’s a game I cherish as I played it a ton with my Mom!
