    The more videos I watch, the more confident I become communicating with my deaf coworkers. Thank you!

    This was better than the last one I saw. You went slow enough over each sign so I could repeat the sign. I could see which sign, which direction to move it. So much better.

    This made me think of a question I'd never thought to ask before. How hard is it for children who have been raised speaking ASL exclusively to learn to read? I thought of this because I never realized exactly how different grammatically and linguistically ASL is from spoken or written English.

      Jan, In my first ASL class, I learned that deaf people read. I wondered how they could read because if they couldn't hear the sounds of the letters, then how did they know the words. My prof said they have speech therapy or they recognize the words for their signs. I never knew that deaf people could read until she said that.

      I'd imagine it'd be about as easy as Chinese kids learning Hanji. So, by the end of elementary school possible, but a reallly sucky process.

    I love your videos and find them to be very helpful! Im currently taking ASL 1 and would like to one day become an interpreter. In class we are learning about giving directions to someone else and I am having a hard time with it. The part that I am struggling with is flipping your signs so other people understand it for some reason it is not clicking in my brain for me. Do you happen to have a video discussing that in more detail that maybe i've missed or any tips on how to get better at understanding it? Thank you for being so informational and making learning this beautiful language a little easier!

      Put it into action. A friend suggested going to the library and signing along with a child's book. When you get comfortable doing that, contact your local center for the deaf and see if they ever have reading times for kids (or the library, asking if they have any deaf families who bring kids for reading time). Include the info that you're learning ASL still when you introduce yourself, but that you hope they enjoy and will sign slowly to help you after.

    Not saying she's a bad signer but you can tell the difference between a deaf signer and a hearing signer. And you can tell even if she doesn't speak in the videos.

    Is "I have to drive my car to the mechanic's" the same same as "I have the drive to complete this momentous task" or "Put the car in the Drive position to move forward"? Verb vs Noun

    • @galetagudar2964
      @galetagudar2964 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ASL is always contextual, so that means signs are not about words, but they are about the meanings of the words. Drive has different meanings. To drive the car to the mechanic's means that you will move it from one place to the mechanic's shop. If you have "drive" to complete a project, then you have motivation to do it. The sign for drive (a car) is different than the sign for drive (to be motivated). Don't think about the words, but think about the meaning s of words. I'm cheering for you! 🤸🏽‍♀️
