Just absolutely wonderful. So true that we must show up every day if we are to become what we desire to become. The best statement I've ever heard, "if I'm green, I'm growing, if I'm ripe, I'm rotting."

I enjoyed both what you said and the focus of your sketches today. Action “shots” like these are hard. One thing I would add to what you said about a daily sketch practice is for people with limited time to not try to do completed drawings like you are doing but to do multiple timed sketches. I start with 4-5 two minute sketches as a warm up…no time for details! Then I’ll do a couple of 5 minute sketches and then 10 minutes sketches. If I have time, I’ll do one complete 20-30 minute sketch based on one of the earlier sketches.

Making the decision to show up, we're going to try, and we're going to do it consistently. This builds momentum. Love your work, love your videos. And I love to paint too and you're so right about the drawing bit. I'm in the same boat about skirting the drawing exercise. You've inspired me to get on this sketching business again. It helped me a lot when I was in High School, and I know I need to do it now. Thank you and God bless.

I find a lot of artists say that. My thought is that we need to make sure that when we miss a day that it doesn’t turn into a week which then turns into a month. So how do we keep that from happening. How do we allow ourselves grace to miss one day but then the next day may it priority for ten minutes. Seems simple enough yet so many can not keep that going. It’s not just with sketching either. Its with every maintenance goal we have from a diet or exercise program, may be a spiritual practice-whatever. Maintenance goals have a set time to perform, easy to start, harder to maintain, but discouraging as we trudge along with no end in sight. So is it in defining a goal so that we can feel a sense of accomplishment or able to celebrate a milestone that keeps us going??
Sorry lots of thoughts and questions that I have thrown around for a long time. Can’t wait to see what others have been doing or thinking on this matter as well

Inspiring technique. Perseverance and taking the time to draw every day, the brain accumulates problem solving techniques as they appear and the familiar brain eye battle leads to better observation of the subject matter before applying what we have before us. Your cowboys are wonderful. The marvelous hatching, smudging & erasing of highlights. Your sketch books remind me of the Buffalo Bill Comics from my childhood. We used our large wardrobe as a stagecoach. I was Kit Carson & my little sister Annie Oakley. Your tutorials are better at teaching techniques to develop confidence, Thank You!

I have never been a sporty person, but for a few weeks now I'm exercising almost every day, and as my new (nearly) daily habit progresses and solidifies, I notice how it's getting harder to skip a session for whatever reason. I hope I can adapt this to drawing and painting too :)

The more times amd time you get past the it's getting boring stage, the more your brain becomes addicted to doing it and after a time it becomes a need, and you actually derive pleasure in the activity.
So, when drawing, draw until you become bored or tired, then push through 5 minutes more. Then next time, do more, and more.
Building the addiction takes time amd frequency and actually pain. Getting past the im tired/bored feels painful in the beginning since the reward mechanism of the brain has not been established.
Consistency is also important since this reward addiction system fades away.
    How to start?
Make a ritual. Say prepare by taking a shower, making milk, sit down, do breathing, etc. Note that this is also uncomfortable in the beginning. Just like going to school.
The decision to be in this situation is important, and realizing the pleasure you gain once you get things rolling is worth it makes a huge difference.
Dont expect pleasure in the beginning. This is similar to working out, or creating a vice.
