It's nice to hear that even the artists you look up to struggle sometimes. I've been out of school for approaching 2 years now and still haven't found myself a job in the animation industry. I've been very slowly reworking my portfolio towards story (I focused on viz work in college but always preferred the storytelling aspect). Whenever I watch your videos it gets me inspired to get to work! :D Just gotta keep trying (and maybe move out of the east coast lol)!

LOL I am glad to hear this can be helpful in some way! Hoping the best for you soon, it's tough sometimes..

“Everyone is on a different timeline.”
Thanks Michelle. I really did need this. I never got an internship at an animation studio nor did I major in animation. I’ve been job searching since graduating last spring, and have been rejected more times than I would like to count. I’ve reached a point of getting fatigued over finding a way to the point where I questioned whether it would be worth it.
But after about hearing about your tough times, I see that it is. Even skilled people struggle alongside everyone else, we just gotta move forward. I’m gonna be real here; I actually broke down crying towards the end of this video, since I’m not exactly happy of where I am right now. I don’t exactly know what I’ll be doing next, but I know that I just gotta keep working on my portfolio and be patient with myself, which is definitely gonna be difficult since I’m always in a hurry but it’ll all be fine in the end.
Thanks again Michelle. Sorry for writing an essay here.

It’s so reassuring to hear that others also have been left hanging when it comes to applying to internships, this was me also applying for the Disney story internship. I wish more companies were transparent during the application process. Netflix has been the most transparent with me during this process when I applied for their animation trainee program earlier this year, and they still keep me updated on where I stand within the application process which has been the most positive experience so far when applying.

Thank you for talking about this, I remember the feeling and how I felt so awful about getting rejected left and right even though I was top in my class. Went to so many portfolio reviews an all "you're so good! We'll contact you" empty promises.
I eventually got a job a year later in comics, and still am working there for another year. But after that year is over, I'm absolutely terrified of going back into the job market. I'm redoing my story/animation portfolio, (interesting you mention the too clean bit, I have the same issue) so the only thing over my head is the job market in Austin. We have some studios but of course nothing like LA.

I love how open you are and how you talked about developing yourself outside art as a person. Its so easy to be trapped in a downward spiral of art and nothing but art that you don't realize how important YOU are in improving your art. Thank you for the content!!

Random thoughts I had while watching this video: Love how you randomly met your SO in third year and got a cool 2D art Disney internship last minute and a character art Dreamworks internship. Yeah ppl matter so much. Whoa I can’t believe many studios said it would work out and it didn’t. You’re so hardworking and strong. Job hunting and rejection is so rough!

This video came just in time! Recently graduated and currently working on my portfolio as well. Taking a bit of a break from applying to jobs because it's been mentally draining just hearing rejections or nothing at all. Going to put all of my energy into my projects and networking/learning more about the industry (tech/design) so I'll be prepared to go job hunting again. Thank you for sharing your experiences and it's comforting to know that a lot of people are in/were in the same boat when it comes to post graduation

thank you so much for this video! I just graduated college in April and I've only had one freelance job so far and I'm at the point where I'm just applying to random kind of sketch places lol, its definitely comforting to hear it took you a while to find a place too!!

Super interesting that you’d get rejected from story jobs for being too polished?
Keeping that in mind going forward…

Thanks for sharing Michelle: though can't help but think that maybe about time you intellectually mature and move on from silly school memories or personal issues and say something more meaningful to our current concerns (your fans' world) as an artist or just not say anything and simply peddle your Patreon wares (trust me: everyone of us has a lot to deal with right now, keep it mostly private, and don't really give a shit about your personal baggage: we love your art though and just want to see you succeed: no need worry about riling anybody. Thanks). A faithful fan.

I completely disagree with everything you just said and you’re actually coming across quite cold and rude lmao. I’d re word your comment, as it’s degrading and if she wants to tell us about her issues she certainly can. I for one can relate to a lot of what she’s going through, I actually want her to keep telling us about it.
