Even when we do watch it legally much of the profit goes to the studio and everyone else but the animators. I don't get why if its not for the animators thered be no anime...

Easier said than done, I believe it took KyoAni a decade from their foundation to get to the point where they could afford to have full-time employed animators with hourly pays (as opposed to per-cut or per-frame pay). Although some animators don’t mind being underpaid since they’re doing what they love, I think animators should still get higher pay regardless, depending on the work they do. The fact that animation takes so much time and effort, as well as trying to satisfy fans of that anime/animation, and then seeing animators being underpaid is just not right in my eyes.

Yeah I totally agree with the strangeness of Japanese society, and why they like to put down those who are working hard with their talent, multitude of reasons and the cost of living might be the biggest burden, sadly, especially for younger people
Japanese animators need to come together and form a union. They need to realise that there's no anime industry without them. As long as they keep continuing with the way things are, they'll continue to be taken advantage of.
As an American illustrator, that salary, OMG... I thought I was being taken to the cleaners here in the US. I couldn't imagine living on so little and working so constantly. My background was mostly in comics and storyboarding for games and commercials but I have also done background design for animation. I eventually stopped drawing and went to other creative outlets because I felt the stress, lack of exercise, lack of social stimulation and overall lack of interaction with the world was unhealthy. Much kudos to this young woman. But I'm wondering, with the passage of time and experience, if her opinion of her working situation will change. It's one thing when you're young, hungry and getting started but it's another when you've been in the game for a while. Especially having to deal with constant change and technological advancements that changes your job over time.
She would probably get married to some guy and then eventually quit or would do digital artwork as a part time job. Many housewives end up doing that especially with work from home as it gives them flexibility to manage home as well as kids.

The whole point here is that Japanese Anime companies have banded together rather than competing with eachother. They are artificially stagnating wages.

It might sound hard, but actually thouse 'admirable' people are the reason the workconditions will never become better. If employers always find people to exploid and who wont complain, they have no reason to change. As long as people with the mindset 'money is not important' exist, they will ruin the workconditions for everyone in the industry. Woman especially are good to exploit, as they are wired by biology to care for children and suck up any inconvinience (=> they are higher in big5 agreeableness), employers exploit that fact relentless.
In japan that is heavily emphasised upon, workers who are new in the workforce are allowed to tell their boss about change of job and unsatisfaction and bosses will relocate them to a more preferable position to work from making most people working in japan happier regardless of the pay the get
General_Alexus So basically you’re blaming the victim. The people with dreams aren’t the problem,it’s the people in power and the system they’ve created. To say that people fervently chasing their dreams is the source of the issue is a rude and lazy excuse. Also women aren’t “wired” with the mentality to suck up to others and “take care of their children”,that’s a stereotype we’ve been given by men to excuse their exploitation of us and you’re just perpetuating it. Well you shouldn’t really blame it on the government as the government don’t pay animators. This is an issue for studios, anime communities and animators to sort out because if a studio only had a certain amount of money from the community buying stuff then they can only pay animators a certain amount to survive as a company

Exactly, the entire Japanese economy has been stagnant for the past 20 years. European and American bankers withdrew their investment in the 90's when Japan was going to become a global economic superpower. The struggles of the anime artists is just the result of economic warfare.
@@MiguelDLewis That's an excuse. The Japanese exploit their own and fellow Asian immigrants without mercy, and that has existed long before Western meddling; it's a malaise in the entirety of Asia. Japan perverts the ideals of honor, diligence, and individual sacrifice for the group. What actually happens is that those on the top extract from these virtues at the expense of those on the bottom, and since their culture heavily penalizes people who shake the boat, change is much slower to come. This is not just the Japanese. I work in biomedical sciences, and I avoid Asian bosses like the plague. That's when the US and Europe pulled investment out of Japan, fearing their economic rise would lead to them possibly even resurrecting the Japanese Empire. Nothing occurs in a vacuum. We have to look at Japanese culture as well as the culture that rules over and dominates Japanese culture. PS: I'm not saying this to vilify Europeans.
One Chinese PI would pass by 6:45 am by each cubicle of his lab to check his post docs were early and didn't leave before 6pm, as well as demanding they work on Fridays. Indian clinicians were no different in their expectations of work hours.
It's a cultural issue that values productivity and monetary gain above all else, and Europeans have gotten it right in growing out of this mindset.
@@Necrostrike I think we're both correct. There are both cultural and geopolitical conditions contributing to this issue. I think you're right that some higher ranking Japanese elites exploit the virtues of their subordinates, but that's been true for all cultures since antiquity. But I disagree that economic warfare from Western powers didn't play apart. The young lady being interviewed said that this current system was put in place 20 years ago.
Indeed, the Roman Empire abused Europeans in the same way for thousands of years. It's all just a big cycle of trauma and abuse it seems. The cultural cannot be separated from the economic

That is probably the solution. SHe is already a freelancer, so there are many anime fans that might pay for physical goods shipped from Japan, by animators with certain individual artistic skills and styles. Also a crack load of companies want logos and other stuff, and they don't want to pay for a permanent art department. But the thing is people like her can't quit.
Companies know that and so they exploit animators dreams. A sound engineer in the same animes these animators work on, a s-engineer usually makes $15,000 per episode.
While animators are slaves.
The problem with this is time. When you are commissioning an artist part of what you are paying is the time they are using to draw your commission instead of working on something else. The rest is materials, experience and uniqueness

Also Japan: why is our population decreasing? Smh.
I guess Japan treats it's citizens as if their peasants in the Shogunate.
You do realise that this video is about anime industry in japan. there are other things that are good in japan in their own ways. Japan doesn’t revolve around anime industry alone.
@@xPhilosophyy You must have a very narrow lens. The practice mentioned is not exclusive to animation studios.
I can hear the collective “uhg” from artist when people ask them to draw pictures of them on the spot 🙄😂
I literally stopped the video to read the comments because I couldn't believe she had just asked her to draw her for free when the video's about artists being underpaid 😭
@Nikillan Karthikeyan I hope so!
@@jessicatriana YES, she should pay her!!!
Yea give them money for a commission

It breaks my heart that so many talented artists: Poets, writers, musicians, animators, mangaka all across the world are struggling. We all love art but must always remember that some of the art we love were made by someone that suffers for the love of art. Appreciate artists even if you don't like a certain artist style, appreciate them because they give us pieces of their souls.
As an artist myself who’s trying to get better, I appreciate your words :)
@@aus-li I am an artist myself, it comes from the heart. ;)
It's really funny how more simple art styles get more attention and money than hard working ones.
I love art. Art is a religion. We all should worship artists for all the love they put in their art
I spent 200grand on my art education and can't even make above minimum wage, so yupe would be nice if the world would cut us a break and stop being aholes like the comment or above.
